Evoni (center) attended Kenbrook Bible Camp in Lebanon thanks to the camp scholarships that Jubilee Ministries provides for local children and youths who have a parent who is incarcerated or in another challenging situation. “Camp has been one of the biggest impacts in my life,” shared Evoni. Jubilee also offers a prison chaplaincy ministry and after-care program.
Moravian Manor Schedules Fourth Annual Book Sale
Jubilee Ministries might be most familiar to people who have driven by or shopped at its stores in Annville, Lebanon, Manheim, Myerstown, and Palmyra, but there is a lot more going on behind the scenes of the bustling thrift stores as the organization aims to fulfill its mission to rebuild, restore, and renew lives. Income from the stores, which sell a wide variety of quality used clothing, furniture, electronics, and housewares, support what chief executive officer Ryan Newswanger listed as Jubilee’s three core avenues of outreach: a prison chaplaincy ministry, a prison after-care program, and summer camp scholarships provided to local children and youths affected by incarceration. “Most people know us from the stores, and they don’t necessarily know there’s a significant ministry going on,”
Moravian Manor residents Marsha Campbell and Susan Newell love the retirement community’s library. “This is our little shared fireplace,” said Newell, pointing to the fireplace that opens to both the library and the cafeteria directly inside the main building’s front door. “This is just such a cozy space.” “Doesn’t this ... make you want to pick up a magazine or a book and sit and read?” added Campbell. “It’s unusual not to find someone here on the computer or reading the paper.” Both ladies have signed on to the committee, co-chaired by Linda Sloan See Moravian Manor pg 2
remarked Newswanger. “Most of what we do happens behind bars and barbed wire, so no one sees it.” Seventeen chaplains are currently on staff with Jubilee and spend time with inmates at 10 prison facilities in Pennsylvania. That time is split between leading worship services and Bible studies and recovery groups, teaching life skills classes, and offering one-on-one counseling to men and women. “I often tell people our chaplains are very much like missionaries,” Newswanger said. “Prison is certainly a place where the Gospel is needed.” Taking the message of salvation and freedom available through Jesus Christ into prisons was how Jubilee got its start in 1972. “There was a revival, and a group of young people felt called to go into the Lebanon County Prison,” relayed Newswanger. What began at the prison with prayer and young adults boldly sharing testimonies of See Jubilee pg 6
Emme Dance Collective To Present “Veer” By Ann Mead Ash
By Ann Mead Ash
Susan Newell (left) and Marsha Campbell enjoy visiting the library at Moravian Manor so much that both are taking part in organizing the library’s fourth annual used book sale, to be held at the retirement community on Feb. 28 and 29.
In 2019, Emily Kline and Melissa Faller, the founders of Emme Dance Collective, created a dance concert called “Bring Into Being” to introduce their company to the Lancaster area. This year, the pair has created “Veer” with a goal of distinguishing their dance company from other established organizations. “We want to be known for our thing, which is contemporary-style movement,” explained Faller. “We are veering off into our own direction.” “ Veer,” which will include 10 dance pieces
and last about an hour, will be presented on Saturday, Feb. 29, at 7:30 p.m. at the Leffler Chapel and Performance Center at Elizabethtown College, 1 Alpha Drive, Elizabethtown. The See “Veer” pg 5

The committee of nearly 10 members has gathered more than 1,000 titles for the sale. “Most of what we have is fiction,” said Newell, who noted that a fair number of science and history books and a handful of children’s books will also be available for purchase, along with a few cookbooks. She noted that some CDS and DVDs will be sold, and Campbell added that a collection of religious books will be in the mix. Biographies and philosophy books will also be offered for sale. “We have more paperbacks, but a nice selection of hardbacks,” said Campbell. Newell noted that the committee expected a few more books to come in prior to the sale because new senior residents of Warwick Woodlands have been given an opportunity to donate. “ We

According to Newell, funds raised by the sale will be donated to Moravian Manor Community Life, which oversees the distribution of funds to individual groups in the community. “(The money we raise) stays in-house,” explained Campbell, who noted that the sale has raised up to $400 in the past. “I am hoping to raise $500 this year,” she said. Newell noted that the sale will be held rain or shine or snow. Moravian Manor has been a fixture in Lititz for more than 40 years. Moravian Manor began holding the annual sale after finding the library overwhelmed with donations. “The shelves were more than full,” explained Campbell. “ We thought we should update, and as we started culling, we thought, ‘We just don’t want to throw these away.” The committee chose to hold the sale in February before other organizations hold larger spring sales. “One of the first years, we had a large storage area, and we sorted a month before,” recalled Campbell. “Lately, we are sorting as we go, which makes it easier.” She said the committee will begin to set up the sale about five days prior to the event. A for-profit and not-for-profit collaboration has been formed in an effort to ensure that the community work being done at Columbia Creative Factory (CCF), 247 Locust St., Columbia, will be able to continue. An offshoot of the Lancaster Creative Factory, the CCF has
been offering low-cost and free art classes and programming for children, youths, and adults since 2016. The building that housed the organization for four years on a donated basis was listed for sale in January 2019, explained CCF volunteer Andrea Campbell. At that time, Campbell and others at CCF organized a capital campaign with hopes of purchasing the building. Approximately $185,000 has been raised of the $425,000 needed to buy the building and make necessary upgrades, including ADA accessibility. The final deadline for the campaign is Saturday, Feb. 29. Individuals interested in making a taxdeductible donation to support the Columbia Creative Factory may visit www.columbiacreativefactory.org. One supporter has offered to match the next $25,000 raised so that contributions will be doubled. If CCF purchases the building, The Pottery

Columbia Borough School District students submitted designs that were then displayed at CCF for the community to vote on. Works, a paint-your-own-pottery studio located at 16 W. Orange St., Lancaster, plans to launch a new location at the site of the current CCF in the spring. “We see so much potential in Columbia as we did in (downtown) Lancaster in the early 2000s: great people, great history and architecture, and great budding arts community,” shared Marcie Natale, owner of The Pottery Works. Campbell explained that with The Pottery Works as an anchor tenant in the building, the nonprofit-owned space will remain on the Columbia Borough tax rolls. Plus, the addition of The Pottery Works to the facility will guarantee the building is open to the public seven days a week. “The concentration of artists in this space, in a secure position to remain here for years to come, could be a huge economic driver,” noted Campbell. The CCF building was once home to Heineman’s Department Store. “People walk in and they love the space. They love remembering what happened here when they were kids and shopping here,” Campbell shared. “You’ve got the older generation coming in and having those memories that were here, and by reopening this iconic building on the main street to the public for creative processes, what we expect is that once we own the building it will be a secure space so that 20 years from now they can come back in with their kids and they’ll have those memories just

the costuming will be brighter as well. “This year, we branched out, with some of our costuming being more vibrant in color,” said Kline. “ We have some that is more eccentric, and (we used) more abstract shapes.” Faller and Kline attended school together in Manheim Township School District from a young age. Both took lessons at a local dance studio and, following graduation, majored in dance at DeSales University in Center Valley. At DeSales, Kline focused on choreography, while Faller was more interested in performance. The pair launched Emme Dance Collective in Lancaster at the end of June 2018. Emme Dance Collective is sponsored fiscally through Fractured Atlas in New York. In the past, Kline and Faller have used their talents to give back to the community by contributing to other local organizations, an effort they plan to repeat. The yearly dance concert helps raise funds to make that possible. “(The annual performance) keeps us going and allows us to give back and hold fundraiser shows,” explained Faller. Tickets are necessary to attend the show. A discount will be offered for tickets purchased by Wednesday, Feb. 26. Tickets may be purchased at www.emmedancecollective.com. Tickets may also be available at the door.

original pieces choreographed by Kline and Faller will be performed by more than 20 dancers, including 12 apprentices. Dances for the family-friendly show have been kept intentionally short so that the performance moves quickly. As with “Bring Into Being,” “Veer” will be performed in the style of contemporary dance, which includes techniques pulled from modern dance, but the program will depart from the themes of “Bring Into Being.” “This year, we are incorporating some different themes,” Kline pointed out. “There will be similarities, but we both tried to branch out.” Faller agreed. “I think with the title ‘Veer,’ we both felt (the work) was jarring,” she said, adding that the movement and music will be edgier compared to the calmer “Bring Into Being.” “This time we are trying to pack a punch with our movement and everything we are showing,” noted Faller. “Some movement is more animalistic,” said Kline, who pointed out that a piece called “Birds of Paradise” was influenced by tropical birds. “Some (numbers) are influenced by real-life events even tragedies - and real-life relationships,” she explained. As with the debut of the company in 2019, Kline and Faller noted that dances will be quick moving and engaging, and the choreography will be colorful and upbeat. For “Veer,”

of $400 - are available to any young person ages 8 to 17 whose parents are currently in a prison served by one of Jubilee’s chaplains or are being served through Jubilee’s after-care program. The idea is that each individual will be able to relax and have fun at camp and be exposed to the Gospel. “The tragedy for the kids (who have an incarcerated parent) is that either mom or dad isn’t there. That means they are forced to grow up fast and have to become a parent to themselves or their siblings at a young age,” said Newswanger. “Camp is great because it gives kids a chance to be a kid.” To donate to support Jubilee’s summer camp scholarship program, readers may visit www.jub.org/summercamp. WINTER OPEN HOUSE
On Saturday, Feb. 29, Global Outreach for Addiction Leadership and Learning (GOAL) Project will present a Face Addiction with Intervention & Training for Healing (FAITH) Initiatives training program at Florin Church of the Brethren, 815 Bruce Ave., Mount Joy. Individuals from all faith organizations are welcome to take part in the program, which will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will include lunch. Keynote speakers will be Steve Brubaker, chief program officer of LifePath Christian Ministries, and Steve Schedler, executive director of Naaman Center. According to www.goal project.org, the workshop is designed to equip religious leaders, both clergy and laity, with information to develop a congregational prevention and recovery support team ministry operated by lay leaders. The goal is to have attendees grow in their understanding of the role that a congregation can play in addressing opiate and other substance use disorders, as well as to learn how to identify barriers and take steps to begin an effective team ministry. There is a set registration fee per congregation. A clergy
member and one or two staff members or volunteers are encouraged to attend together. To register, interested individuals may visit https://bit.ly/31QJrMs. The deadline to register is Monday, Feb. 24. Anyone with questions may call GOAL Project at 717-824-3310 or email mail@goalproject.org. “As a pastor for over 20 years, I have seen how addictions in various forms destroy lives, relationships and families. Though we will battle against addiction forever as we walk on this Earth, I feel churches have a calling to help those who are searching for freedom from their struggles,” shared Florin Church of the Brethren pastor Thomas Weber. “Whether it is churches working together in a concerted effort or an individual church seeking to serve in an area of addiction prevention (and) recovery support or just pointing people to resources they need, I feel we have a calling to help with the healing process,” Weber continued. The workshop is supported by the Lancaster County Drug and Alcohol Commission, Compass Mark, and Legacy Mennonite Foundation. For more information, readers may visit https://goalproject.org.

“The change can happen, and we see it all the time,” stated Newswanger. “The most fascinating thing about this ministry is how someone can go from committing whatever crime they did and being at a very low point and then seeing the transformation that can happen if they choose to follow Christ.” Newswanger considers it an honor to watch men who have completed the after-care program then go on to become a successful part of the workforce, own businesses, pastor churches, and raise healthy families. For children and youths who are or have been impacted by incarceration, Jubilee offers one-week summer camp scholarships to local faith-based camps every year. The scholarships which are in the average amount
what God had done in their lives grew to include a thrift store in Lebanon to generate funds to support chaplains to go into area prisons. Several other store locations were launched as the entire ministry multiplied. The after-care program began in 1993 as a way to purposefully support people coming out of prison and transitioning back into society. “We’ve been doing re-entry since before it was called re-entry,” Newswanger said with a smile. Men may apply to be part of the program, which offers group housing with faith-based and life skills classes to attend, as well as job training and work at the Lebanon thrift store. Newswanger described the program as very structured and designed to help each individual meet specific goals.

Barons Compete in Sectionals, Betancourt Wins The news hit some coaches and wrestlers like a ton of bricks. It was like in the movie “Top Gun” when the fighter pilots learn that Viper - the veteran pilot - is in the sky with them. That’s what it must have felt like when grapplers and coaches learned that Manheim Central’s Will Betancourt dropped weight and moved down a weight class to 120 pounds, after wrestling all season at 126. He’ll compete in sectionals, districts and states in the lower weight class. Like the movie, they likely said, “Oh, great, Betancourt’s here.” “I had coaches reach out to me and say they wish they knew he was dropping down because they would have
moved up (a weight class),” Barons’ coach Billy Chamberlain said. “Will and I talked about it and he felt it was his strongest shot to win a state title. I said, ‘let’s go do it.’” So far, the move paid off, as Betancourt won his fourth straight sectional title Saturday, Feb. 15 at Hempfield High School. In dominating fashion, the senior spent less than five minutes on the mat Friday and Saturday, Feb. 14-15, collecting three falls and a technical fall on the weekend. He pinned Jared Fulton, of Solanco, at 1:04 in the finals. Betancourt now seeks his fourth straight District Three Title Feb. 21-22 at Spring Grove High School, making him only the 13th wrestler to achieve this mark. “He looked really good,”
Chamberlain said about Betancourt. “Sometimes when you first drop in weight there is a bit of adjustment, but he didn’t look sluggish and he tried to push the pace.” Senior Connor Zeamer placed second at 145 pounds. In the finals, Zeamer was in a crazy match, Chamberlain said. Zeamer put his opponent on his back and almost got a pin, but, in a stroke of bad luck, his opponent scrambled and got him in a headlock and eventually secured a fall. Zeamer finished second in sectionals last year. He advances to districts, where he placed fifth last year, just missing a berth in the state tournament (the top four wrestlers make states). Making his first appearance in sectionals, freshman Brett Barbush took fourth place at 195 pounds. “There is no pressure on him,” Chamberlain said. “He needs to just go out and have fun.” In the quarterfinals he beat his opponent 3-1, avenging an earlier loss this season. He lost 12-0 in the semifinals to a wrestler that is ranked second in districts. Barbush fought back in the consolation bracket, gaining a pin in the consolation semis, before losing 7-0 in the consolation finals to a senior grappler who is ranked fifth in districts.

Kheuangthirath wrestled all season at 120 pounds, but moved up when Betancourt dropped weight. Chamberlain said Kheuangthirath wrestled well in the tournament. Overall, the coach was also pleased with how his team performed. “We’re young, but I saw some good things,” he said. “We were scrappy and I thought

The Center for Traffic Safety, Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, Safe Kids Lancaster County, and the Manheim Township Police Department will distribute car seats to Lancaster County police departments. Funded by Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, 39 car seats were slated to be provided to 21 municipal police departments by the end of January. Law enforcement agencies often have child passengers during calls, and they need to have resources available to safely transport children. Every child must be properly restrained when riding in a
motor vehicle. In order to uphold this Pennsylvania law, police officers need to have the means to transport children safely before leaving a scene. According to Safe Kids, a correctly installed child restraint can greatly reduce the risk of injury or death in an automobile accident. Safe Kids Lancaster County offers car seat checks at locations through Lancaster County. To learn more, readers may contact Natalie Oster, Lancaster County coalition coordinator, at 717-544-3807 or natalie.oster@pennmedicine.upenn.edu.

The students are also considering the effect the show will have on audiences. “A lot of the principals have come up with unique ways to add to their character, said Murray. “I hope the people who see it appreciate the new takes we brought to our (roles). Tickets for the play may be purchased at www.lancaster mennonite.org under the Fine Arts tab, by calling 717-7402456, or by emailing boxoffice@lancastermennonite.org. “They have added a number of beautiful ballads that enhance the story, said Dean, who noted that many of the songs are sung by the Beast and that Belle and Maurice sing a duet. “There’s a big production number called ‘Human Again,’ where all the objects dream of what it would be like to be human again, said Dean. To enhance sound, the pit orchestra will be located on stage behind the action. “Beauty and the Beast brings many inanimate objects to life, and the LMHS production will take that a step further by giving additional inanimate life forms a chance to move. “In the forest, there will be actors that portray trees, and the enchanted rose will also be portrayed by a live actress, said Dean. Cast members reported that they are enjoying the challenges of the show, with Becca commenting that the music is vocally interesting. Harnish is having fun developing the character of the uptight Cogsworth, as is Martin with the over-thetop villain Gaston. Murray is relishing perfecting her British accent. As the Beast, Schnabel is working to portray a frightening creature that sings. “We have the idea that the beast is dark and
A total of 285 teams from 235 high schools across Pennsylvania are competing in district and regional levels of the Statewide High School Mock Trial Competition sponsored by the Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA) Young Lawyers Division. Pennsylvania’s mock trial program is now in its 37th year. During the competition, eight-member student teams are given the opportunity to argue both sides of a case in an actual courtroom before a judge. The students, who play the roles of lawyers, witnesses, plaintiffs, and defendants, are assisted by teacher coaches and lawyer advisers in preparing for the competition. Lawyers and community leaders serve as jurors for the mock trials. The juries determine the winners in each trial based on the teams’ abilities to prepare their cases, present arguments, and follow court rules. The district and regional levels of the competition will continue throughout February and March.

When Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) musical director Dean Sauder chose the musical “Beauty and the Beast for the school’s spring offering, he was not thinking about how aspects of the play would echo the school’s theme for the year of “Transformation, but he was amazed to recognize how the two went hand-in-hand. “When we come to Christ, we are transformed, noted Dean. “Belle sees the possibilities in (the Beast), and she doesn’t write him off, said Dean, adding that with the Beast’s rival, Gaston, the outside masks a less-attractive interior. “Are there possible Christian undertones? he wondered. “It’s not a Christian story, but I don’t think it’s a far leap. “Beauty and the Beast will be produced at LMHS in the Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27; Friday, Feb. 28; and Saturday, Feb. 29. A matinee performance will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 1. In addition, a breakfast meetand-greet with the principal cast members will be held on Saturday, Feb. 22, in the school dining hall, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
“(Attendees) can dance with Belle and the Beast, said Dean, who added that activities with other characters will be available to those who attend the ticketed event. Individuals who attend in costume will be able to purchase a discounted ticket to see the play. “Beauty and the Beast is the tale of Belle, played by Becca Sauder, and the Beast, played by Noah Schnabel, who is really a prince trapped under a spell. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the spell will be broken, and he will become human again. Other principal characters include Isaac Kraenbring as Belle’s father, Maurice; Chadman Martin as Gaston; Isaac Harnish as Cogsworth, with Brendan Johnson as his sidekick, Lumiere; and Ella Murray as Mrs. Potts. About a year ago, Dean saw a production of the show that put some unique twists on the story. The changes motivated him to take on the show, which he said can be an overwhelming task. “It’s a huge show in every aspect, said Dean of helming the cast of 53. In addition to the challenges of vocals, sets, and costumes, the stage show includes several musical numbers not found in the movie.

Square Halo Books To Present Conference Square Halo Books recently announced its newest conference, “The Inklings: Creativity, Collaboration and Community,” will be held on Friday and Saturday, May 1 and 2, at the Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster. Inspired by the fellowship of C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien and their friends who gathered together to discuss their writings, the conference will reflect on their works, while also providing creative and collaborative experiences for attendees throughout the weekend. The weekend will include a variety of presenters, including writers, poets, actors and artists. The keynote speaker will be Donald T. Williams, author of “Deeper Magic: The Theology Behind the Writings of C.S. Lewis,” a Square Halo book. Other presenters will include writers Matthew Dickerson, Shawn Smucker and Christy Purifoy, poet Christine Perrin and director Bonnie Bosso. The conference will conclude with a concert by singer-songwriter Andrew Peterson. The event is being held in collaboration with The Trust Performing Arts Center, The Row House, The Reverie Actors’ Company and Hearts & Minds Bookstore. In partnership with the conference, the Square Halo Gallery, located in the Trust, is holding an Inklings-inspired art exhibition. Information about how to submit works for the show can be found at www.facebook.com/events/28468 67502205459. Square Halo Books is devoted to publishing works that provide materials useful for encouraging and equipping people in the Christian faith. To learn more about “The Inklings: Creativity, Collaboration and Community,” readers may visit the conference’s page at www.squarehalobooks.com or contact Leslie Bustard at conf@square halobooks.com.
