Hunt for treasures at an indoor yard sale

Walk through the doors of the fellowship hall in Ruhl’s Church on Saturday, March 1, and you never know what you might find.

The church’s annual indoor yard sale will be held that day from 7 to 11 a.m., featuring antiques, collectibles, household items, toys, books, tools and a food stand. The church is located at 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim.

More than 30 stand holders will participate in the event, said Kris Gray, a church member who coordinates the yard sale.

“There is always a wide variety of items for sale at good prices and a chance to chat with friends and neighbors,” she shared. “We normally have a great turnout because folks are eager to get out and enjoy one of the first yard sales of the spring.”

A wide variety of food will also be for sale, including egg sandwiches, homemade chicken corn noodle soup, hot dogs, barbecue sandwiches, baked goods and assorted beverages.

Again this year, a table will be set up offering new and used Bibles and devotional books for people of all ages, offered free of charge. One of the yard-sale tables will feature items donated by church members. All proceeds from the sale of those items will directly benefit the church and its missions.

There’s also a chance to win a door prize, Gray said.

“When attendees sign up to be added to our email list to receive notifications about upcoming events, they are registered for the door prize,” she explained.

Proceeds from stand holder donations and the food stand, as well as the donation table, help to fund the missions and ministry activities of the Sunshine adult Sunday School class. This class organizes and distributes food boxes for local families in need at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter; supports the church’s participation in Operation Christmas Child through Samaritan’s Purse; and hosts a special banquet for senior citizens. The class also sends cards to homebound individuals and supports

four local ministries as well as an overseas missionary.

Gray noted that the yard sale, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, would not be possible without the support of a team.

“We have an amazing team of volunteers who advertise the event; set up all the tables; help the vendors find their stands; make the soup, egg sandwiches and other food items; run the food stand; and clean up after the event,” she said.

Ruhl’s Church holds community events throughout the year, and the indoor yard sale plays an important part in the church’s mission.

“We like to reach out to the community to provide fellowship opportunities that also support the Lord’s work,” Gray said.

Free parking is available for the indoor yard sale in a large lot on the church property, and the church is handicapped-accessible. Pets are prohibited in the building as is smoking.

For more information on the event, call the church office at 717-665-3400.

For just over two years, community organization Advoz worked with middle and high school students in the Elizabethtown Area School District to reduce conflicts and promote restorative practices.

Although the Lancaster-based organization’s participation in the district ended after grant funding ran out, Advoz saw positive results from collaborating with the students, and it’s now looking to expand Advoz partnerships with other districts in the county.

From Elizabethtown, Advoz staff members worked with ninth-grade students in the School District of Lancaster to highlight mitigation of classroom conflict and improve communication skills.

“We focused on an introduction of conflict skills, ‘I’ messages, and the various conflict styles of different people,” shared Krista Rittenhouse, interim executive director and director of restorative practices

The Lancaster County Wood Carvers group will hold its 50th annual Woodcarving Festival on Saturday, March 15, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, March 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Millersville Universi ty’s Student Memorial Center, 108 Shenks Lane, Millersville. “It’s going to be the largest show we’ve had,” said Jeffrey Pretz, who is a member of the Lancaster County WoodCarvers.

“We’re having commemorative carving knives created that will be for sale. We’re having the Caricature Carvers of America. There will be a lot of bird carvers and spoon carvers and other

“People can come to purchase supplies for carving as well as carvings that are handmade by individuals who are there,” Pretz said. “They can also come for inspiration of a great hobby.”

Among the 60 exhibitors will be members of the Lancaster County WoodCarvers’ sister clubs, including the American National Cane Club (ANCC), a club that focuses on canes and walking sticks and meets monthly in Lancaster County; the Manheim Township WoodCarvers, a club that focuses on carving together and crafting Christmas ornaments for hospice and meets monthly in Lancaster County; the Conewago Carvers, a club that meets in East Berlin; the West Shore Woodcarvers, a club that is active in Mechanicsburg; the Yorkarvers, a club from York; the PA Delaware Valley Woodcarvers, a club from Bucks County; and the Wil-

The Lancaster County

WoodCarvers group, made up of 75 members, meets the third Tuesday evening of each month at Community United Methodist Church, 130 Tennyson Drive, Lancaster. Carving starts at 6 p.m. with a meeting and show and tell at 7.

The group holds an “open carve” at Community United Methodist Church on the first Thursday of every month at 9 a.m.and 6 p.m.

“It’s an outlet for my creativity,” Pretz said. “But also there are a lot of books and patterns that you can copy. It’s something you can do that’s not noisy, you’re using your hands, and you can do it almost any place.”

Snow Angels wield shovels of mercy

It has absolutely nothing to do with people lying on their backs in the snow and moving their arms and legs to create impromptu winter weather art. It’s more closely related to kindred spirits performing heavenly work here on Earth. These are different kinds of Snow Angels.

“Before we had a formal name, the people who we were helping named us,” said Jennifer Jarvis, one of the founding members of the Lancaster Snow Angels. “They said to us, ‘You’re angels. We’re so thankful.’”

The Snow Angels are an independent, community-oriented group of concerned citizens who travel around the Lancaster countryside shoveling and removing snow from the sidewalks, walkways and driveways of the elderly, the disabled and veteransneighbors who can’t remove

snow on their own. It began as a grassroots movement in local neighborhoods, but the altruistic concept has gained traction and has now spread to nearly every corner of the county.

“Our veterans and elderly shouldn’t have to deal with stress,” said Jarvis. “They have doctor’s appointments, and they have direct-care nurses coming to their homes. If they don’t have families, or don’t have families who live nearby, who’s going to help them?”

That’s where Lancaster Snow Angels come in. Persons in need of snow removal reach out to the Angels through phone calls, email and social media. The response may not be immediate, but no call for help ever goes unanswered.

“It’s mostly individuals who can’t afford private snow removal,” said Jarvis, a resident of Terre Hill.

“We’re a faith-based organization. We take everyone at their word. We haven’t really been taken advantage of at this point.”

Depending upon the severity of the storm and the amount of snow that has fallen, the Lancaster Snow Angels respond to 130 to 200 requests for help. The Snow Angels’ coverage area currently encompasses the communities of Lititz, Ephrata, New Holland, Columbia, Denver, Strasburg, Paradise, Willow Street, Elizabethtown and portions of the city.

“It is a big county,” said Jarvis. “That’s why it gets so hard sometimes. We’re talking about 10 to 30 addresses per town, or on one Angel’s list. We’re pretty much covering every town in the county. Wherever there’s a need, we fill it. Sometimes it takes three or four days to clear a substantial snow.

In January of 2020, Jarvis; her husband, Fernando Rosado Jr.; and co-founder Mike Schmelder identified a need for helping their neighbors with snow removal. Through social media, word of mouth and some other very organic sources, the movement has grown steadily.

“Volunteers have come to us through multiple channels, and I’m grateful for that,” said Jarvis. “They are strangers who have become family. We’ve experienced a lot of growth client-wise and volunteer-wise. There’s a great need. It brings the communities together.”

The Military Oral History Club of Lancaster County will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m. at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2435, 401 Manor St., Columbia. The speaker will be Edward Czechowski.

At the age of 17, Czechowski enlisted in the U.S. Navy after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He was assigned to the Fletcher-class destroyer USS Saufley, which saw a

lot of action in the Pacific, including at Guadalcanal, Guam, Saipan, and Tinian. Czechowski and his fellow sailors had many close calls on the destroyer. Czechowski is now 100 years old.

The Military Oral History Club meets on the last Tuesday of each month. The meetings are open to the public. For more information, call 717-319-3430.

The show will be on exhibit throughout National Pet Month, May, and proceeds will benefit the Sebastian Foundation for Animal Rescue. We Love Our Pets is held in memory of April Koppenhaver’s late husband, Charles E. Gaul II,

and Mulberry Art Studios’ beagle mix mascot, Milo. Artworks can be in any medium, but must be on the subject of pets. The open submission period will run through Friday, April 18. Best in Show and People’s Choice awards will be presented in both the adult and youth categories. For submission guidelines, email gallery curator Stephanie Kulfan at Stephanie.Mulberry Art@gmail.com.

training

Penn State Extension has released an updated version of the Walk by Faith trainthe-trainer educational program, offered in partnership with the Penn State Cancer Institute. A training for organizations will be offered on Thursday, March 13, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the basement training room at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.

Walk by Faith is a community-based program designed to encourage a healthy lifestyle that includes walking, with the goal of helping participants become more physically active and reduce their cancer risk. The program can be tailored to fit the needs and wants of the community where it is being presented.

During the program, participants set and track personal health goals, supplemented by educational sessions intended to provide additional motivation and support. The toolkit offers resources for educational and motivational presentations, guidance for setting healthy lifestyle and activity goals, and group activities to

encourage physical activity and healthy eating.

The curriculum writers noted that local community organizations implementing the program can reach individuals of various education levels, employment types, and incomes. These community organizations also can provide social support and reinforcement to members, especially if they share a common goal of wanting to change health behaviors.

To register for the training, visit https://extension .psu.edu/walk-by-faith -instructor-training-for -organizations. For more information about the Walk by Faith program, visit https://extension.psu .edu/walk-by-faith-program -information.

for the organization. “We worked on community building. We believe if we don’t trust each other and we don’t care about each other, we’re not going to engage well with each other.”

Advoz also supports the peer mediation program in the School District of Lancaster, providing a facilitator in the school to oversee student mediators who have been trained by Advoz.

“Students are really seeing the value of this program,” Rittenhouse said. “It’s mitigating violence in the hallways, streets and after school, even on social media. Students are learning that if they handle conflict in the supportive environment of mediation, that spills out into how they handle conflict when they aren’t being supervised.”

Advoz also works with Sacred Heart School in Lancaster, providing services one day a week for the small private school.

The goal of Advoz’s collaboration with school districts is to reduce the need for low-level offenders to be referred out to authorities such as district judges.

“They can report to our embedded school resource officers, and they still have consequences for their actions, but we are focused on repairing and maintaining relationships,” Rittenhouse explained. “Our students are going to absorb their education, and engagement is best when they feel supportive, they feel safe, and their brain is not in an activated state.”

In other words, she noted, restorative practices help students stay in their “learning brain,” not in their “survival brain.”

“We are all about turning conflict into conver -

sation,” she said. “All of the programs we have are intended to create structures to remove barriers to having hard conversations, to empower collaboration and inclusive conversation so everyone has a voice in determining a solution that works for everyone.”

Formed in 2017, Advoz was created from a merger of Lancaster Mediation Center and the Center for Community Peacemaking. Those organizations have roots that go back 40 years, so the depth of knowledge and resources is strong, Rittenhouse said.

Advoz concentrates on restorative practices, an umbrella term for the values and guiding principles that include collaborating, inclusive learning, community building and response to harm. Restorative justice comes into play when harm has been caused.

“Now we’re in a subset of restorative practices that requires accountability, making things right,” she said.

According to statistics provided by Advoz, schools that employ restorative practices see positive results. Graduation rates increase, truancy decreases and suspensions also decline. Teachers report that restorative justice practices help them build caring relationships with their students and make a

positive impact on school climate, ultimately leading to an increase in safety.

“Change comes when students have a sense of feeling connected and invested in their community,” she said, adding that it’s not a quick fix.

“Restorative practices often get misrepresented because it takes three to five years of intentionality to see a culture shift and to see skills change.”

Schools that choose to work with Advoz should be prepared to put in work up front to see big results.

“It takes more time on the front end to get a program going,” she said. “You have to give up instruction time in the beginning, but you gain it back when students are engaged, inclusive and collaborative. When students are actively being invited to engage in their learning, they are less likely to be disruptive in the classroom.”

If a school is interested in working with Advoz, Rittenhouse suggests reaching out for an initial consultation.

1148 Old Line Road, Manheim www.haldemanmechanical.com

“We offer multiple ways to support schools,” she said. “We have training for individual staff, for teams, for direct facilitation.”

The organization also works with businesses on conflict resolution and team building.

“We want our organization to be connected to the community and community owned,” Rittenhouse said. “We believe if people are using these strategies in their own lives, in their work and their homes, that has a trickle effect into the community.”

Global headwear exhibition posted

The Phillips Museum of Art at Franklin & Marshall College will present the exhibit “The Global Language of Headwear: Cultural Identity, Rites of Passage, and Spirituality” through Thursday, April 24. The exhibit presents 89 hats and headdresses selected from a private collection of more than 1,300 pieces of international headwear.

The exhibition features hats from 42 countries across Asia, Africa, Europe, the Middle East, North America, and South America, and it is a tribute to the diversity of the world’s cultures. With a few exceptions, the pieces are from the mid- to late 20th century, and many are still worn today in parts of the world for revelry, ritual, and the rhythms of everyday life. They exhibit a profusion of shapes,

styles, and materials, as well as the ingenious use of embellishments. The exhibit is organized into five thematic sections: Cultural Identity; Power, Prestige and Status; Ceremonies and Celebrations; Spiritual Beliefs; and Protection.

The exhibit was curated by Stacey Miller, an independent curator of ethnographic headwear. She has spent more than
