Kim’s parents, Harry MacAfee, portrayed by Isaac Harnish, and Doris MacAfee, played by Mikayla Beers, are not exactly thrilled at the prospect of their daughter kissing a rock ‘n’ roll star. “Birdie,” which is based loosely on Elvis Presley’s induction into the Army, is set in the late 1950s. While the story of Conrad and Kim plays out, Rosie is struggling to move forward in her relationship with Albert. The pair is impeded by Albert’s mother, Mae, played by Merry Yirga, who

Director Dean Sauder considered a number of plays before settling on “Bye Bye Birdie” for the Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) spring musical. Sauder noted that one reason for selecting the show was to contrast 2018’s “ Wizard of Oz” production. “We are intentional about choosing shows from different eras to help give our students a rounded theater experience,” said Sauder. LMHS will present “Bye Bye Birdie” in the LMHS Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28; Friday, March 1; and Saturday, March 2. A matinee performance will be held at 2 p.m. on March 2. “Birdie” is the story of Conrad Birdie, played by Noah Schnabel. dislikes Rosie and continually takes steps to thwart the relationship. “It’s a challenge as Rosie to stay strong,” said Calix-Alvarado of her role. “She does show her sensitive spots.” Sauder noted that the role of Rosie stands out in the show for a number of reasons. “Even as Albert keeps folding … and she’s being picked on by her future mother-inlaw, she rises above it, and in the end she triumphs,” said Sauder. “There are not many shows from this era that have a woman (character) with that strength.” Beidler pointed out that performing from a script written for a different era can be a challenge. “We’re doing a show set in the 1950s in 2019,” she said. “There are a lot of things said in the show that you cannot say now.” Sauder agreed, noting that gender roles that were assumed during that time period have changed drastically. The show is known for catchy tunes, and the cast members are looking forward to presenting the songs with dances choreographed by Katie Sina-Kindig. Students mention “Put on a

Sometimes genealogist Darvin Martin finds himself in the role of scientist. More specifically, Martin has found himself becoming well-versed in genetic science. He has developed an understanding of DNA and how it is passed from generation to generation. With the advent of basic genetic testing available through companies like Ancestry.com and 23andMe.com, a whole new aspect of genealogy has opened up. “There are huge benefits of DNA testing, but they lie in the deeper testing - not the basic ethnicity testing - which can reveal relatives,” Martin said. “You can share family trees and see how you connect.” There are some myths about genetic testing, however, and Martin hopes to dispel them during his presentation “The New DNA Reality: Forging the Path Between Discovery and Privacy,” which he will give on Friday, March 29, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS), 2215

Millstream Road, Lancaster, as part of the 40th Lancaster Family History Conference. “Everyone assumes their DNA is private, but that’s not the case,” remarked Martin, conference committee chair. He explained that while a particular combination of DNA might be unique to a specific person, the components of those genes may be accessed through other avenues, as they come from their parents, who got their DNA from their respective parents, and so forth. “The way that we think about DNA is an illusion because nature does not work that way,” Martin said. During his presentation, Martin will discuss two recent cases in which DNA from genealogical sites helped law enforcement officers trace and confirm the identity of perpetrators of crimes committed long ago. Additionally, Martin will address the concept of ethnicity and the uncertainty of genetic testing for ethnicity. “It’s a false assumption that you can quantify ethnicity. Ethnicity is

not just genetics; it’s also history and culture,” Martin asserted. Martin explained that because of the way genes are randomly distributed, a pair of biological siblings might test as having genetic markers similar to people in completely different parts of the world. One way in which testing is helpful, however, is in men from Western European backgrounds. By tracing Y chromosomes, it is possible to see how surnames have changed over time. Martin related a story about two family groups in different states that discovered they share a Y chromosome and thus a common ancestor. It turned out that the last name of Carpenter was the English translation of the original German surname of Zimmerman. Martin’s presentation may be attended in person, or folks may watch it online live or at a later date. There will be an array of other presentations, seminars, discussions, and field trips offered before and during the Lancaster Family History Conference. The conference will examine how legal

Judy Russell records are a helpful resource for understanding the details of one’s ancestors’ lives. Pennsylvania has a collection of legal records starting as early as 300 years ago. Genealogist Judy G. Russell will present the keynote address, “No Person Shall Gallop Horses in the Streets: Using Court Records to Tell the Stories of Our Ancestors’ Lives,” on Saturday, March 30. Russell has worked as a reporter, writer, legal investigator, defense attorney, federal prosecutor, and law editor, along with as an adjunct faculty member at Rutgers Law School. During the week of the conference, from Tuesday, March 26, to March 30, registrants may use the LMHS library and archives free of charge. The March 30 sessions will take place at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Early registration will end on Wednesday, Feb. 27. General registration will end on Wednesday, March 20. To register, readers may visit www.lmhs.org or call the LMHS at 717-393-9745. At the same time, it changes our hearts. We see in bigger ways what God is doing in various places around the world.” As part of this focus, Messiah’s engineering students have teamed up with FIA, which has a headquarters located between Elizabethtown and Middletown, to provide more than 1,400 Rama Cay people with a block press to produce structural building blocks for residential housing off the east coast of Nicaragua, as storms and the elements rot wooden huts. The initial efforts on this project are slated to eventually relieve the overcrowding and unsanitary conditions of more than 200 families on the tiny island. In June 2018, Dr. Brian Swartz’s engineering students worked with FIA to construct a pedestrian bridge above a 20foot ravine in Rama Cay that prevented access to a proposed medical center and baseball field from the villagers’ new hurricane-resistant homes. Messiah’s Dr. Phillip Tan also visited the Rama in December 2018 to conduct microbiological and chemical analyses of water sources. “We are pleased to host

Messiah’s students with engineering projects that apply their learning to solving real-world problems and meeting tangible needs that demonstrate God’s love,” noted Tim Johnston, FIA’s executive director. The latest partnership of FIA and Messiah’s Collaboratory will provide clean water through 16 miles of gravity-fed piping to more than 3,500 NiVan people in Vanuatu - covering 30 villages, two clinics, and three schools. Messiah’s Dr. Thomas Soerens visited the region with FIA after learning about the need of the villagers. “I hear your organization is a friend to the people of my village,” wrote Alani, a NiVan villager. “I write to you in need. The dry season is come, and I cannot catch enough rain water to care for my family. I ask you for water. Please come soon to help my family and my people. We will not make it through the dry season without help.” The NiVan tribal leaders are already familiar with and grateful for FIA’s efforts to combine construction projects with the spread of the Gospel. The completion of a 6-kilometer road connecting 19 NiVan villages with schools and a medical clinic in 2011 resulted in faster medical transport and supply delivery, as well as more than 240 villagers coming to know Christ.

Messiah College engineering students worked with Friends in Action Intl. to build a pedestrian bridge above a 20-foot ravine in Rama Cay, Nicaragua. The project was part of a partnership between FIA and The Collaboratory at Messiah College, which seeks to complete community transformation projects around the globe. Since 2017, The Collaboratory at contact FIA at 717-546-0208 Messiah College has partnered with or fia-usa@fiaintl.org or visit FIA to secure a source of water in a www.fiaintl.org. high mountain spring that produces 48 gallons per minute, enough to meet the needs of thousands of villagers nearby. The scope of the project will require approximately $435,000 and five phases to complete. Teams of short-term volunteers are already slated for 2019 and beyond. The community is invited to join the efforts of FIA and Messiah College by providing financial support, donating construction materials, or taking part in a short-term work trip. hours per day, clocking in and out and working alongside other Kinsey’s employees. Ken Mueller, public relations and development manager for ODC, said that the skill set of participants has been a good fit with Kinsey’s, which makes archery supplies and outdoor gear. Mueller added that many businesses have a variety of tasks that might also be a good fit for ODC individuals, including light assembly, collating mailings, and putting kits together. Strine noted that the ODC participants in the small group program have also folded and packed items such as T-shirts, archery equipment, traps, and gloves. Emerson, one of the small group participants, said that his favorite job is making boxes, especially the large boxes. “We try our best (to make as many boxes as we can),” said Emerson, who also folds T-shirts. Emerson appreciates the excitement of meeting new people, but he said he does get nervous sometimes when talking to people he does not know. That is where Deb Russell, who serves as a liaison between Kinsey’s and ODC comes in. “Our crews interact throughout the day and during lunch breaks,” said Russell, who first suggested ODC participants help with box production in early 2016 based on her sister’s 40 years of experience at ODC. “The crew from

ODC arrives with a positive attitude that’s contagious throughout the building,” Russell continued. “The way they support one another to accomplish the goals we’ve laid out for them is inspiring. We should all learn a lesson from them.” Strine complimented Kinsey’s employees, saying, “Interaction between Kinsey’s employees and participants has been excellent.” According to Mueller, integrating participants into community businesses is an ultimate goal for ODC. Strine agreed, saying, “All (participants) have designated disabilities, but I like to look at what they can do.” Russell added that ODC crew members have been willing to try new tasks, following instructions compiled in a binder. “The binder was made up so that each crew could work independently, making the final projects consistent for Kinsey’s and giving (the participants) a feeling of success and independence,” said Russell. “We’re so proud to be working with such a wonderful organization.” Emerson said he likes the work, but he also enjoys receiving a paycheck. His favorite thing to spend his money on is pizza. ODC is actively seeking more employers who could benefit from the talents and abilities offered by participants. ODC Small Group from pg 1 ODC’s small group employment program. He cannot say enough about the ODC participants’ skills and work ethic. At the warehouse, part of Strine’s job is to move the boxes groups of up to four participants make as one of a variety of duties they complete, from the area where they are constructed to another location in the warehouse. The more boxes the participants complete, the more trips Strine makes. “They keep me moving,” he said. “On a busy day, I do 20,000 steps in four hours.” According to ODC executive director Gregg Richards, the program is designed to give participants a chance to work in an integrated environment. “Small group employment is a crew of program participants who go to a workplace with a program supervisor and work side by side with employees of the local business, (where they) are paid at minimum wage or above,” explained Richards, who added that businesses may utilize a crew for seasonal work or on a regular basis. Strine said that ODC participants were carefully selected for the program based on skills. Over the course of a year, Strine worked to cull a list of 40 possible participants down to eight workers and four alternates. “They were competing for positions,” noted Strine, who added that the participants work four

Even though he is only 14 years old, Logan Conrad, a freshman at Elizabethtown Area High School, has already learned important leadership skills such as event planning, public speaking and multitasking as a candidate for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) 2019 Students of the Year program. As part of the seven-week initiative, which began on Jan. 13, select high school students from around the country participate in a fundraising competition to benefit LLS. So far, Logan has planned and held a cornhole tournament in which 20 teams took part. Proceeds from select food and beverages sales during the event were also donated to LLS. He also held three additional fundraisers at local restaurants during which a portion of the proceeds from food and beverage sales was donated to LLS and credited to Logan’s campaign. Logan was nominated to be part of the Students of the Year program by his neighbor Shaun McCoach, who was a candidate in LLS’ Man of the Year Campaign last year. Similar to Students of the Year, Man or Woman of the Year recognition is given to the person who raises the most money for LLS in a 10-week period.

Sierra Club Holds Race Matt Lipsey of Harrisburg was the overall winner of the Sierra Club Lancaster Group’s ninth annual Polar Bear 5K Trail Run/Hike, held recently in Lancaster County Central Park. His time was 17 minutes, 32 seconds. Second- and third-place winners, respectively, were Paul Davey of Lancaster (20:23) and Daniel McMichael of Lancaster (20:53). Finishing first among women racing was Laura Brenner of Lancaster (22:43); she also finished first among women in last year’s race. The second-place winner was Bonnie Stoeckl of Pequea (24:44), and taking third place was Katie Eckman (25:03). Also running or hiking with their owners were 47 dogs of all sizes and breeds. The dog placements were first place, Cooper, owned by Tim Groth of New Freedom; second slace, Sadie, owned by Mike Helbein of Glenmoore; and third place, Cattie-Brie, owned by Gary Purfield of West Chester. A total of 234 people registered for the race, including runners and hikers, which was more than last year despite the threat of stormy weather. Approximately 90 volunteers were on hand to handle raceday activities, as well as many spectators who cheered as the participants crossed the finish line. Money raised in the event will help fund the club’s “green project” grant program, which has awarded grants of up to $500 to 29 Lancaster County organizations over the past three years, and support its outdoor activities and educational programs designed to help people better appreciate, protect and preserve the environment. Book Discussion Group To Meet

Get Ready For

Exploring, Growing Together, a book discussion group at Lititz United Methodist Church (UMC), 201 E. Market St., Lititz, will continue its 2018-19 series, which aims to help people explore beliefs in a safe discussion environment. The group meets on Thursdays on the lower level from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Attendees should use the lower-level parking lot entrance to the building. On March 7, 14, and 21, Gerry Gwinn will lead the discussion on “The Sun Does Shine: How I Found Life and Freedom on Death Row by Anthony Ray Hinton with Lara Love Hardin. The story of hope, love, justice, and the power of reading tells of Hinton, who spent 30 years on death row for a crime he did not commit. Arrested and charged in 1985, Hinton won his release in 2015. In the case of inclement weather, the group will follow the Warwick School District schedule; if there is a delay or school is closed, the group will not meet that day.
