The Phillips Museum of Art at Franklin & Marshall College will present “Green Practices in Historical Clothing” on Thursday, Feb. 22, at 4:30 p.m. The museum is located in Steinman College Center, 628 College Ave., Lancaster. Karin J. Bohleke, director of the Fashion Archives and Museum of Shippensburg University, will speak about fashion’s environmental and social impact, which ranks it as one of the planet’s biggest polluters and contributors to poverty through sweatshop labor. Awareness of these issues has made some consumers begin to rethink their wardrobe choices and consider how they can make positive changes on a personal level. To find inspiration, people can look to the home seamstresses, pro-
fessional dressmakers, and tailors of the 19th and early 20th centuries, who were masters of “green” wardrobe management. They have left behind a wealth of information in publications and surviving garments that demonstrate both their creativity and their frugality. The Fashion Archives and Museum at Shippensburg University features garments from ballrooms to discos and has loaned costumes for the Phillips Museum spring exhibition, “Ingrained: Celebrating Pennsylvania’s Cultural Heritage.” The lecture is open to the public at no charge, and preregistration is not required. Loans available to students Lancaster Dollars for Higher Learning (LDHL) will again offer interest-free loans to Lancaster County residents who wish to pursue postsecondary education on a full-time basis. For the 2024-25 academic year, LDHL will award loans valued from $1,800 to $2,000. The loan amount decision will be made at the board of directors’ meeting in May. To qualify, students need to be residents of Lancaster County and must attend accredited postsecondary institutions - such as a college or university, graduate school or trade school - full-time in the 2024-25 academic year. Additionally, students need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students can apply for a maximum of four loans - one for each academic year - and the checks will be sent directly
to the students’ schools to be applied to their tuition expenses. Loan recipients have a six-month grace period after graduation or withdrawal from school. They must then beg in their loan repayment at $110 per month. Students may also choose to pay off their loans early. A p p l i c at i o n s w i l l b e accepted through Tuesday, April 30. Contest from pg 9
.com/TickborneDiseaseArt Contest24. Finalists will be notified by mail and will be invited to an award ceremony at the state Capitol in May. In 2023, nine winners were recognized at a ceremony with representatives from DOH, PDE, and DCNR. Pennsylvania has one of the highest annual counts of Lyme disease cases in the nation. Ticks are usually found in shrubs, weeds, leaf litter, and tall grasses, but can be found anywhere there is grass. When exploring outside, it is important to take the proper steps to lower one’s risk of getting bitten; these steps include covering exposed skin, wearing light colors to help detect ticks, and using an EPA-approved insect repellent. Use permethrin spray on shoes, clothes, and gear as an added protection before spending time outdoors. A fter being outside, people should check themselves and their children and pets thoroughly for ticks and remove any that they find. Then, people should shower to help remove any ticks they may have missed. Clothes may be put in the dryer on high heat to help kill any ticks that might still be stuck to the clothes.
