She’s The Fairest Of Them All BY CATHY MOLITORIS

n almost 70 years, the Manheim Farm Show has not had a fair queen win the state crown - until now. In January, Anna Haldeman of Manheim was named the 2022 Pennsylvania fair queen at the Hershey Lodge. She competed in a field of 55 queens, who represented fairs across Pennsylvania. “I was in complete awe and shock,” Anna said of her win. “I still have not fully wrapped my mind around it all. Talking with my family in the hours following, it was so

sweet to hear all their reactions and even the reactions of extended family and friends that were able to watch it live on Facebook. I am incredibly proud to have the opportunity to represent all the fairs across Pennsylvania, and I cannot wait for all the fun to begin!” Anna is the daughter of Kyle and Kristen Haldeman of Manheim. She’s a senior at Manheim Central High School, where she is president of the FFA chapter, co-captain of the rifle team and a member of both the National Math and National Art honor societies.

To compete for the state title, Anna had to win her local fair and complete an application and essay before the state competition. In Hershey, she had to complete an interview with a panel of judges and give a prepared speech. Five finalists were chosen, including Emma Musser of Mount Joy, who represented the Elizabethtown Fair. Each finalist also gave an impromptu answer on how the pandemic has changed her fair. Contestants were evaluated on their written and speaking skills and their knowledge of the fair and agriculture industries, as well as on their poise and personal presentation. The morning after the competition, Anna presented a speech titled “Why You Should Visit My Fair” to the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs Board of Directors. It wasn’t hard for her to come up with material, she said, because she firmly believes in the value of smalltown fairs. “I know that small fairs we are actually a farm show - like Manheim matter because we keep traditions alive, and we are built on the foundation of agriculture, which is everlasting,” she stated. “Our farm show is something that our entire town loves. People not only can become involved by visiting and participating but also through volunteering, which is crucial for making most fairs happen. It brings the community together at a level that no other event can do because of the family orientation it is structured around.” In the coming year, Anna will travel throughout the state to promote all of the fairs of Pennsylvania and participate in other agricultural events. “The support of the Manheim Community Farm Show and my hometown has been an overwhelming blessing to my family and me,” she stated. “I would not have accomplished receiving the title of state fair queen without their support. … I’m so glad to be able to share my love of fairs with everyone I encounter this year.”

Hunt For Bargains At An Indoor Yard Sale BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Winter might not seem like yard sale season, but if you can’t get outside for a bargain, you can still find deals inside at the Ruhl’s Church 22nd annual indoor yard sale. The event will be held in the church fellowship hall, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, from 7 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 5. “We have 32 stands selling all

varieties of items,” said Kris Gray, one of the event organizers. “Friends and family of church members and people from the community have stands. Some people have had a stand for years.” Along with yard sale stands, the event will feature a food stand serving egg sandwiches, homemade chicken corn noodle soup, hot dogs, beef barbecue sandwiches, baked goods and drinks. Born and raised in the Manheim Central area, Niki Lannigan is a daughter, a wife, a mother, and a breast cancer survivor. In 2019, Lannigan kept having a reoccurring dream in which she had cancer. This dream served as a catalyst for Lannigan to make an appointment to have tests and exams done. When she arrived at her home after having a mammogram at UPMC, Lannigan received a phone call from UPMC, notifying her that she had to return the next day for a biopsy. See Warrior pg 2

It was then that Lannigan was diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer. Over the past two and a half years, Lannigan has endured eight rounds of chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, three surgeries, 20 more rounds of chemotherapy and immunology treatments, and 28 radiation sessions. She went into “warrior mode” during her cancer treatments by shaving some of her hair and tattooing the breast cancer awareness symbol on the left side of her head. As of May 17, 2021, Lannigan is cancer-free. “God has provided many miracles for me,” noted Lannigan. “I would like to thank my husband, Rob; my parents, Nancy and Dan; my children, Mattie and Nick; Father Hector from Greek Annunciation Orthodox Church; my friend and oncologist Dr. Latif; and all that have prayed for me.” At the time of her diagnosis, Lannigan was running an aesthetics center in Linglestown. While there, she removed branding tattoos from victims of trafficking. She was then recruited by a medicine spa in Lititz, where she was receiving her treatments. Soon after Lannigan decided to join the team in Lititz, the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the spa. She kept asking herself, “How can I continue to help people?” The answer came to Lannigan on LinkedIn, where a woman from Penn Medicine recruited her to work in plastic surgery. Lannigan spent about eight months working there until September 2021, when she tested positive for COVID-19 and was forced to resign due to her health. From her radiation treatments, her

right lung was damaged, and there was too much risk working in a building where there were many ill patients. After posting on Facebook about her resignation, Lannigan received numerous job offers, but only one offer caught her attention. A couple of women Lannigan used to work with proposed that Lannigan open her own practice in a private room located in their massage therapy office, Tensegrity Treatment. And that was how Genesis Aesthetics was born. Located at 1890 State St., East Petersburg, Genesis Aesthetics and Tensegrity Treatment provide massages, nutritional classes, yoga, and medical aesthetics. Lannigan is a licensed medical aesthetician and a certified oncology skin specialist with over 30 certifications, most of which she received during her journey with breast cancer. At Genesis Aesthetics, Lannigan offers free facials for life to anyone who has cancer, has had cancer, or is taking care of someone with cancer. All of the products used and sold at Genesis Aesthetics are 100% natural. Lannigan also hosts conferences at Genesis Aesthetics where she informs attendees about which toxins to avoid in skin and body products as well as food. “Two of my friends, after being told they were cancer-free, ended up with reoccurrences four months later and passed away,” said Lannigan. “You need to fight for yourself. I want to help people as much as I can.” To learn more about Genesis Aesthetics, search for “Genesis Aesthetics” on Facebook or call 717-390-5553.

When the park closed, the carousel was operated at Lake Lansing Park in Michigan and later at Dollywood in Tennessee. In 1999, the carousel was returned to Lancaster and purchased for $1.3 million, all private donations raised by the Rocky Springs Carousel Association. When the association’s plan to locate it in a public square in Lancaster’s downtown did not materialize, the carousel was placed in storage, where it remains today. The book’s 234 pages include photos of 14 animals on the Rocky Springs Carousel that were professionally restored between 2005 and 2008. Other than a dog and a rooster, which were put on display for a short time, the animals have not been seen by the public since their restoration. Of Heaven BANKRUPTCY A Little BiteWednesdays through March 23. BY CATHY MOLITORIS

For almost 100 years, Holy Trinity Catholic Church members have been serving up “a little bite of heaven.” That’s how they describe their homemade fastnachts, which will be sold at the church beginning on Monday, Feb. 28. Volunteers are invited to help with the fastnacht bake and they’ll be offered hands-on training, Mahan said, noting that no one is striving for perfection. “Our fastnachts are like snowflakes. No one is like the other,” she stated. “They are all handmade. No machines are used.” And on the rare occasion a fastnacht turns out that can’t be sold, it won’t go to waste. Explained Lutz, “There’s nothing better than getting to eat a reject.” Orders will be taken online only for fastnachts until sold out. To place an order, visit www.holytrinitycolumbia pa.com. Doors will open at 10 a.m. each day for pickup at the side entrance of the school, 404 Cherry St., Columbia. Orders not picked up by 1 p.m. will be resold on a first-come, first-served basis. To volunteer with the fastnacht bake, call the parish office at 717-684-2711.

Salem United Methodist Church (UMC), 140 N. Penn St., Manheim, will host a presentation by its pastor, John Laughlin, and Mark Heller of Manheim on Sunday, Feb. 27, at 3 p.m. Laughlin and Heller will speak

about their kayaking trip down the 444-mile-long Susquehanna River, including packing and planning for the trip, how they persevered to complete the mission and people they met along the way. The presentation will include photos. Also, the church will resume its weekly Wednesday community suppers on March 2 at 5:30 p.m. Baked goods will be available after the meal. nut, although both have a hole in the middle. “A doughnut is cake-based, and these use yeast dough,” he said. “Ours have a unique taste you won’t find anywhere else.” Fastnachts were traditionally made on Shrove Tuesday to use up lard before Lent, which runs from Ash Wednesday to Easter. “We don’t use lard in ours, and we don’t stop making them the day before Lent,” Sahd said. “We actually go three weeks into Lent.” As Knapp joked, “We’re slow eaters.” In all seriousness, the sale is held annually as a fundraiser for Our Lady of the Angels School, which provides instruction to children through grade eight. Volunteer Kathleen Lutz said the fastnachts are so popular, they often sell out. “We have people who ship them out of state,” she said. “People also freeze them because they freeze well.”

Preparing the fastnachts - which volunteer Jim Knapp said number 620 dozen each day - requires a full battalion of workers. “We make the dough at night, and it rises overnight,” explained volunteer Karen Sahd, noting that the dough rises in special cupboards set up in Our Lady of the Angels School across the street from the church. “The next day, it gets rolled out and rises more, and then it’s fried.” The rolling process is an all-day job that begins at 4 a.m., and it includes exact steps, said volunteer Betty Mahan. “There is a specific way you have to roll them, and you never turn the dough,” she remarked. “You release the dough up from the table before you cut them. It’s a specific process.” Knapp, who has been volunteering with the fastnacht bake for about 15 years, is in the charge of the frying room and the glazing room. The fastnachts are available by the dozen either plain or glazed, and Knapp said the latter is the most popular choice. “Sixty-seven percent of what we sell are the glazed ones,” he noted, adding that the fastnachts are dunked fully in the glaze. Knapp explained that Holy Trinity’s fastnachts are nothing like a dough-

During the spring of 2020, Karen Davis, Kiwanis Club of the Lititz Area publicity representative, saw a video of an event held by a Kiwanis Club in California. She thought the event might work well in Lititz, so she shared it with another member, and the first Wine, Cheese, and Chocolate Tasting Party was held in 2021. “We have had requests from people who were involved in the first virtual party in January of 2021 to please do it again,” said Davis. The club has responded by organizing the second Wine, Cheese, and Chocolate Tasting Party to be held via Zoom on Friday, March 11, beginning at 7 p.m. Each Zoom engagement will include commentary about pairings. Those who take part will pick up their party bags on Thursday, March 10, at a specified location in Lititz. The Zoom portion of the event is sponsored by Moravian Manor Communities. “Each party bag will contain three bottles of wine from Portugal. Along

Wiederseim To Sell Collection Of Ed And Carol Stoudt Of Stoudts’ Black Angus Brewery and Pub Sale To Take Place In Phoenixville On July 24

This is a vintage Wurlitzer juke box. Wiederseim Associates is pleased to offer the private collection of Carol and Ed Stoudt for auction on Saturday, July 24, at 9 a.m. The sale includes the contents of the legendary Stoudt’s Black Angus Restaurant and Brewery in Adamstown, Pa., as well as Ed and Carol’s private collection from their home. After over 30 years in business, Ed and Carol have sold the business and are seeking their next adventure.

The couple opened the Black Angus Antique Mall along with the restaurant and beer garden in the 1980s. Business was good. Why not open a brewery? Based on German beers brewed in the Reinheitsgebot tradition, the couple opened the brewery in 1987, with Carol becoming the first female brewmaster in the U.S. since Prohibition. Through the years, the couple traveled and collected extensively

for their business and home. They assembled items such as Black Forest carved furniture (including two tall case clocks), whimsical circus novelties, Art Nouveau brass chandeliers for the beer hall, carousel horses and an unusual carousel

running rooster, vintage posters, a large collection of German steins, a restored 1932 Auburn Convertible and a 1937 Ford Woody, partially restored, all of which will be in the July 24 sale. “If you’ve ever been to Stoudt’s, you’ll be very familiar with the items in this sale and won’t want to miss it. Also, each month during the summer, the front sales display case will highlight dealer’s best or unusual items from their booth or case. The Emporium will be divided into three sections, starting with its dealers located on Route 130 and ending with the dealers on River Continued on page 5

Bargains from pg 1

New this year, there will be a table of new and used Bibles and devotional books for people of all ages offered free of charge. “We have done a table like that at our God’s Clothing Closet event in August in the past, but we thought this might be a nice way to get devotional material into people’s hands if we added it to our yard sale,” Gray explained. The yard sale is a fundraiser for the missions and activities of the Sunshine Sunday school class. The class organizes and distributes food boxes for local families in need at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter and supports the church’s participation in filling shoeboxes for Samaritan’s Purse at Christmas. The class also hosts a banquet for senior citizens and plans to donate some of the proceeds to local ministries. In addition to supporting the church, the yard sale serves another purpose, said Barb Dunmire, one of the event organizers. “It’s a chance to reach out to the community,” she stated. “I personally really like to talk to the people who come out year after year. I like the relationships you build with people you don’t see from one yard sale to the next. It’s nice to chat and catch up.” She emphasized that the event is handicapped-accessible and open no matter how chilly the weather is outside. “It’s a really convenient way to go to a bunch of yard sales all in one place, rather than having to go to individual houses,” she said. “People are itching to get out and get their yard sale fix, and they can do that here.” Neither pets nor smoking is permitted inside the building. Masks are optional. For more information, visit https://ruhlschurch.org or call 717-665-3400.
