Brewing inclusion at Hope Served Café

Stop by a new refreshment bar at Pleasant View Communities, and you’ll get much more than a cup of coffee. You’ll be supporting the mission of Hope Served, a nonprofit organization formed to create mainstream jobs in the community for people with disabilities.

Hope Served opened the refreshment bar in January. It is the perfect vehicle to highlight the organization’s specialty coffee roasting business, Hope Served Coffee. The organization also makes and sells greeting cards, and the new café is another step in Hope Served’s path toward opening a restaurant in Manheim.

“In the summer of 2024, a coffee vendor running a kiosk on the campus of Pleasant View Communities in Manheim vacated the space,” said Steve

Schwartz, executive director of Hope Served. “Knowing our coffee business and our goals to open a restaurant, Pleasant View approached us about bringing our coffee to their campus. After some discussions and business planning, we jumped at the opportunity. It is such a perfect opportunity to showcase our coffee and gain experience in running a disability employment enterprise.”

Hope Served Café offers Hope Served Coffee and specialty drinks, including lattes and cappuccinos; hot tea; and light breakfast offerings, such as pastries and yogurt parfaits.

“As we get our feet under us, we will expand the drink and food menus,” Schwartz said. “We plan to add protein fruit smoothies, Lotus energy drinks and seasonal specialty drinks. And we plan to add breakfast sandwiches and

The café is located on the campus of Pleasant View, outside the Hearth and Harrow Restaurant, 2100 Town Square, Manheim.

“The café has lots of comfortable seating and free Wi-Fi, ideal for a coffee meeting or a place to hang out with your laptop or a good book,” Schwartz noted. “The Pleasant View campus is very welcoming.”

Hope Served Café opened with a temporary manager, Logan Miles, who is a disabled veteran.

“Logan has another work commitment he must depart us for this spring, so we are in the hiring process for our permanent manager,” said Schwartz. “Sierra Martin is assisting as a part-time operations manager, as she has experience running cafés that employ people with disabilities. Sierra will be designing our training programs and food and drink production procedures with a

Wife-and-husband duo Dorothy and Phil Smith of Salunga will have the first show they’ve written performed by an official theater organization for the first time when the Promise Players perform its spring musical in March.

The Smiths and their son, C.J., teamed to pen “Muddled Memories: A Bible Journey,” a family-friendly, staged musical with a lighthearted look at Bible memories with something seriously muddled in the middle, including a monkey, an emu, and a super man.

Dorothy, the show’s director, wrote the dialogue and contributed some of the lyrics. Phil, the musical director, and C.J., a professional musician who now lives in Allentown, wrote the music and the majority of

“Probably my favorite thing musically is directing and/or hearing something I’ve composed being performed. That is a big joy,” said Phil, who is also the director of the Bainbridge Band and writes some arrangements for that group.

VITA announces free tax preparation

“Most people don’t understand taxes,” said Cliff Mast, site coordinator for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Paradise location at The Factory Ministries, 3293 Lincoln Highway East. “We as a group (of volunteers) work on de-mystifying them or just being a calming presence.”

Mast explained that many clients who come to VITA for free tax preparation services feel a lot of anxiety about completing

their taxes. “Our goal is to say, ‘It’s alright. We will take care of this. We will help walk you through it.’”

Mast, who has been a volunteer with VITA for nearly a decade, said that the Paradise site, which opened at the end of January, is one of 15 sites located throughout the county that are staffed with volunteer tax preparers. Locally, free tax preparation through VITA is available at Salem United Methodist Church, 140 N. Penn St., Manheim.

wide variety of abilities in mind.”

Working at the café is a paid position, but the organization is also looking for people to volunteer alongside the staff to help increase profitability and allow the organization to employ more individuals.

”At Hope Served, we celebrate the gifts of people of all abilities,” Schwartz remarked. “We believe the community is stronger through diversity when people are blessed by interacting with people of differing life experiences. Our goal will be to hire several part-time baristas to help in customer service and drink and food preparation.”

In its first few weeks, the café has been well-received, and Schwartz is optimistic about its future.

“We dream of a world where people of all abilities find hope, meaning and genuine belonging with one another,” he said. “Too often folks with disabilities are marginalized from the workplace and social activities. We want to come alongside individuals with disabilities to provide hope and support through mainstream employment and participation in

the local community.”

Hope Served Café is open Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to noon. The organization hopes to expand to Saturday hours in the near future and is exploring opening earlier in the morning to cater to clients of the on-site fitness center located beneath the café.

To learn more about paid or volunteer opportunities at Hope Served Café, contact cafe@hope served.org or 717-347-9785.

“Our goal is to make the best coffee in Lancaster County, to demonstrate all that folks with disabilities have to offer,” Schwartz said. “Come see for yourself and give us your feedback. Also, our cinnamon rolls are amazing.”

More information about hours or making an appointment, which is recommended, is available at www.uwlanc.org/vita. Individuals may also schedule by dialing 211. Pop-up sites may be available as well. In Lancaster County, VITA services are provided through a partnership between the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the United Way.

“(VITA services) are available to anyone with a household income under $70,000,” said Mast, who explained that further parameters exclude taxes

for rental properties and S corporations. “We don’t do business returns,” he said, but then added that Schedule C taxes for a side business would fall within VITA’s wheelhouse. VITA will complete federal, state, and local tax forms as well as the PA-1000 form for those who qualify. “That is an extra rebate up to $1,000,” he said.

According to Mast, the service starts with an intake form, which can be filled out online or may be sent ahead of the appointment by email. “We have everyone fill out an intake name, address, who is in the house, W-2, 1099, retirement income, etc.,” he explained. “That helps us to interview and be sure we have all the correct information.” Mast explained that taxes are done in person during a session that generally lasts less than an hour. “We enter information into software, and (documentation) goes back to (the client),” he said.

All VITA tax preparers are volunteers who are trained by the IRS to complete basic returns and are tested yearly. Mast recently received his enrolled agent certification, which he noted is

the highest certification that the IRS bestows on a tax preparer. “It means I have learned about personal tax and business tax returns and representing people in front of the IRS,” he stated. “I got a lot of training this last year to earn that.” Mast recently opened Masterpiece Tax in Leola.

Mast said that in 2024, volunteers at the Paradise site completed 400 returns. “That’s a huge amount of volunteer time,” said Ellie Green, communications director with The Factory. “That’s at least 400 hours, not to mention the time spent to get the certifications,” she said. “It’s an incredible gift to the community.”

Readers who would like to volunteer with VITA may visit the aforementioned website and click on the “Volunteer” tab.

Christian theater group and a ministry of Lampeter Church of the Brethren, where its shows are held. The members of the cast are from all over Lancaster County. The cast is made up of Melissa Blasick, Kiara Hess, Linda Ross, Michelle Coblentz, Emily Bauman, Debbie Houck, Pat Gruber, Jean Ross, Emma Stahl, Marty Raine, Bella Sedano-Perez, Sofie Sedano-Perez, Elyse Hershey, Lena Good, Steve Quigg, Chris Gruber, Wayne Rhinier, Ken Hess, Jim Mahoney, Lanny Millette, Micah Raine, and Levi Livengood. Anna Breneman is the stage manager.

“Muddled Memories: A Bible Journey” is a comedy featuring puns and plays on words, Dorothy said. “We take a series of Bible stories, and we muddle something in the middle,” she said. “We try to follow true to the message behind the Bible story, and we do emphasize that. It’s just in the acting out of it we twist some things.”

For example, the musical features Garden of Sweden instead of the Garden of Eden. “Rather than having people naked on stage and realize they’re naked, we pretend they’re in Sweden, and not realizing it’s cold until the apple is eaten. Then they’re freezing,” Phil explained.

The group puts on two shows a year, a play in the fall and a musical in the spring. The productions traditionally raise money for a Christian nonprofit. This spring, the beneficiary is the Manheim Community Life Group’s Home on Ferdinand, a transitional living program designed to provide support for women and children currently facing homelessness.

“It always feels good,” Dorothy said. “We have benefited

a number of nonprofits. They always are appreciative, and it’s always nice to give back to the community.”

The Promise Players group has been doing just that since Doreen Creighton founded it 25 years ago. Ken Hess was a member of the original troupe and is still active.

“I never thought I could act,” Hess said. “Never, ever, ever. That wasn’t on my radar. One time they needed a Lazarus and asked if I would do it. The choir director at the church I was attending asked me to do it. I said I had never done anything like this before. He said, ‘Well, we’ll teach you.’ That was the beginning, and I fell in love with it. And I’m doing my 40th show this spring.”

Hess has seen the Promise Players come a long way. “I
