They’re Off To See The Wizard BY CATHY MOLITORIS

“True friends bring out the best in us,” said Ben Ginder, describing one of the lessons audiences can take away from “The Wizard of Oz.” Manheim Central High School will perform the musical at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 10; at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, March 11 and 12; and at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 13. Due to ongoing construction at the high school, the show will be performed at Manheim Central Middle School, 261 White Oak Road. Ben, a junior, plays the Tin Man in the production. He said getting into character has been both fun and challenging. “My character rusts up a lot, so I’ve had to learn how to walk differently and move differently from the way I would normally be on stage,” he explained. He’s joined on stage by a cast of characters who tell the story of a young girl and her experiences in the land of Oz. “The musical is very similar to the movie,” said Ezekiel Ruffner, a senior who portrays the

Scarecrow. “The girl is joined by three friends - a scarecrow, a tin man and a lion - who help her along the way. They are all in search of something for themselves.” The Cowardly Lion is played by junior Jonathan Wenger, who said the show will appeal to people of all ages. “Audiences can expect a great familyfriendly show full of laughter and drama and everything in between,” he stated. “It’s a feel-good story.” Ezekiel noted that the show features a variety of special effects on stage, including the use of fog machines and sparking technology to simulate fire. “The witch tries to light the scarecrow on fire, but I hope she doesn’t succeed,” he said with a smile. Senior Madison Kreider portrays Dorothy in the production and said the show is full of life lessons. “It’s a fun story to watch, but you’ll also learn from it,” she remarked. “You’ll learn that you don’t always appreciate the things you have until they are gone. It’s also about the idea of home, what home is and why it matters.”

Caring About The Community

As director of Manheim Community Cares (MCC), Culeen Shaffer has been getting to know the people who call Manheim home. “I’ve met so many people who care about this community,” said Shaffer, who came on board as director of the nonprofit in December. “People are really invested in Manheim.” See Caring pg 7

Give Back On The Green

Lions Club members Dave Husser (left) and Randy Rannels invite the public to a golf tournament.

Dave Husser believes in helping others. “I have a motto: Life’s about giving, not getting,” said the president of Manheim Lions Club. He supports the Lions Club’s mission of serving the community, and he invites the public to help give back by participating in a golf tournament to benefit both the Manheim and Palmyra Area Lions clubs. The event will be held on Saturday, June 4, at Iron Valley Golf Club, 201 Iron Valley Dr., Lebanon. Registration will begin at 7 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The entry fee will include green fees, the use of a cart, prizes, a pig roast lunch and drinks.

INSIDE THIS ISSUE

Husser got the idea to organize the event as a joint project of the two clubs after having a conversation with Traci Petrino, president of the Palmyra Lions. “We realized that both of our clubs were small, so we thought, ‘Let’s get together and do something,’” he recalled. A golf tournament seemed like a natural fit, since Husser works at Iron Valley Golf Club. Proceeds from the event will benefit local projects in both Manheim and Palmyra as well as Beacon Lodge, located in Mount Union. The lodge provides allexpenses-paid camps for special needs children and adults and their families. See Give Back pg 4

Caring from pg 1 That’s a good thing for Shaffer and MCC, an organization established in 2018 with the goal of building a thriving community where residents feel empowered to support each other. “Manheim Community Cares uses data to find issues in the community and to work to solve those issues,” Shaffer explained. The most recent data, which comes from various sources, including police department reports and school district reports, indicated that some of the top concerns for Manheim residents are low neighborhood attachment, perceived drug usage and food insecurity. Although addressing these topics may seem daunting, Shaffer is confident MCC can make a difference in the community. The organization was recently awarded a grant from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency to collect data and develop collaborative

relationships with schools to address the disconnectedness of community members and increase awareness of emerging drug trends in the community. Shaffer noted that the success of MCC relies on involvement from the community. “We are looking to recruit members to help us with our mission,” she said. “We have so many opportunities for people to help. Maybe you want to focus on funding. Maybe you’d like to be more behind-the-scenes, and you want to study the data. There is a way for everyone to get involved.” MCC will be working with

other organizations and groups in the Manheim community, Shaffer stated, including Teen Central, Hope Served, Supply and the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce. She noted that because MCC’s focus is datadriven, it should be easy to evaluate results and see what’s working and what isn’t. As she adjusts to her new role, Shaffer has several goals for MCC. She’d like to eventually list resources in the community as well as volunteer opportunities on the organization’s website. She’d also like to create a community garden to help

tackle food insecurity, create youth service projects in the community and develop MCC-specific community surveys to determine local needs. Shaffer encourages anyone in Manheim to get involved in MCC. “This is your community,” she noted. “You have the ability to change it for the better. Peo-

ple can say, ‘This is wrong’ or ‘That is wrong’ in the community, but the only way for difference to happen is for the community to get involved and make that difference.” She hopes people will reach out to MCC about specific needs in the community. “Come to a meeting and share your voice with our

organization,” she stated. “MCC is for everyone in Manheim.” MCC will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, March 8, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at The Sink, 31 S. Main St. For more information on MCC, visit https://manheimcom munitycares.org or email Shaffer at director@man heimcommunitycares.org.

Barons Fall to Northeastern, 53-39

The Manheim Central boys’ basketball team lost 53-39 to Northeastern in the first round of the District Three Class 5A tournament on Feb. 21 at Doe Run Elementary. Shooting guard Trey Grube paced Manheim with 16 points, including two 3-pointers and point guard Judd Novak added 10. Zac Hahn and Collin Neiles each knocked down treys. Northeastern led 13-7 after the first quarter and 24-14 at halftime. The lead was extended to 40-26 after three quarters. Barons coach Charlie Fisher said Northeastern jumped on the Barons early and Manheim never got into a rhythm. “They were up 10-2 and we had a bit of a hangover (from league playoffs),” Fisher said. “They (MC) played hard. Offensively, we never really got a good bucket. We shot 24 percent. We could not make a shot and then we lost patience.” Fisher said the Barons did a good job defensively, holding Northeastern to 53 points, but they were unable to capitalize on the offensive end. The Barons season continues, as they moved into the consolation bracket. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The Lady Barons earned a 49-38 victory over New Oxford at Doe Run Elementary on Feb. 23 in the first round of the District Three 5A tournament. With the win, Manheim clinches a spot in the state playoffs. In the meantime, they will face West York in the district

quarterfinals. Junior Maddie Knier paced Manheim with 24 points, Rachel Nolt added 10 and Abbie Reed seven. After three quarters, Central led 40-25 and looked like it would cruise into the quarterfinals, but New Oxford climbed back to make things interesting, going on a 14-2 run. Knier’s layup with 4:02 remaining made it 44-33 and stopped the run. Early on, it was all Manheim. After a slow start and a 10-6 lead after the first quarter, Central started to pull away. Reed’s layup off a steal put the Barons ahead 1811 with 5:49 left in the second quarter. Central outscored New Oxford 20-7 in second quarter, taking 30-13 lead at intermission. Knier had 13 points at the break and Nolt had 8. “Ball movement was so good tonight and when the ball is moving shooters are able to get in rhythm and knock down shots,” Barons’ coach Tyson Hayes said. “It was a total team effort. The kids were locked in and wanted this one bad.” WRESTLING The Barons finished tied with Elizabethtown for sixth place in the team standings with 86.5 points at the PIAA District Three Class 3A Sectionals Feb. 18-19 at Hempfield High School. The top four finishers in each weight class advanced to districts. Brett Barbush (172 pounds), Brodie Daugherty (145) and Uriah Warner (132) will compete at districts.

Barons’ coach Quint Eno said he was pleased that is squad had some time off between competitions and it showed with a strong showing. “Brett Barbush has been consistent all season long,” Eno said. “He is continuing to wrestle harder and more focused each time out. We’re really pleased with his performance this season. Uriah Warner has been dialed in too. He’s looking crisp and wrestling intelligently.” Looking at surprises, Eno pointed out Daugherty. He’s only a freshman and made the finals. “On paper yes, that would be a surprise,” Eno said, “but Brodie is hard-nosed, and he continues to develop in key positions. We know

what we have with Brodie. He’s finding his go-to attacks and wrestling a little tighter and more intelligent every time he toes the line. We’re really pleased with his progress. The future certainly is bright for this kid.” Eno said his staff was pleased to see guys like Logan Forrest and Rocco Daugherty place. Both finished fifth. They continue to get better and have really made a lot of technical improvements this season, he said. “Logan is enjoying competing and Rocco is starting to believe that he is a force at 189,” Eno said. “Those are the intangibles that can be difference makers in close

How you finish and how you compete in that final bout when the perception is that it doesn’t matter will set you up and motivate for the off season and the next season. We’re looking forward to seeing how this fuels him going into 2023. “The team competed well (Feb. 18-19). We as a staff and community are proud of their heart, hustle, and humility all season. We’re all looking forward to districts, to the impact our seniors will make after graduation, and next year’s team.” BOWLING Hailey Kowalski and Holly Hunt will compete in the Regional tournament on March 4.

matches and these guys are just starting to figure it out,” he said. “We can’t wait for next season with these two.” Barbush and Brodie Daugherty both lost in the finals and Warner earned a major decision win in his third-place bout. Braxton Bloom dropped a tough match in the consolation semifinals, where if he won, he would have qualified for districts. He responded with a win in the fifthplace bout. “We’re proud of his perseverance and follow through,” Eno said. “It is very important to finish well. Most, after that loss, decide it doesn’t matter what happens. Well, it does.

Wizard from pg 1 Ezekiel added that he also sees a variety of lessons to be learned from “The Wizard of Oz,” including the importance of believing in yourself. “The scarecrow wants a brain, the lion wants courage, and the tin man wants a heart, but the characters learn they don’t really need to be given those things to be happy,” he stated. “They learn that they already had those things inside them.” To promote the show, the cast will host a meet-andgreet at the middle school on Saturday, March 5, from 10 a.m. to noon. MERCHANDISER - Manheim Central Edition - March 2, 2022 - 11

The American Red Cross invites community members to become volunteers. Local volunteers enable the Red Cross to support its community and neighbors in need every day. In the last year, Greater Pennsylvania Red Cross volunteers provided aid, including food and shelter, to over 6,300 people affected by home fires and other disasters in Pennsylvania. Among the available volunteer positions are a transportation specialist and Disaster Action Team members. Transportation specialists are the link between blood donors and blood recipients. They deliver blood, platelets, and other blood products to processing centers and to

hospitals for patient use. Each day, people are forced from their homes due to fires, storms, and other disasters. Disaster Action Teams meet the disaster-caused needs of individuals and households, such as lodging and clothing, and connect people with longterm recovery services. Training is free. To learn more, visit www.redcross.org /volunteertoday. COVID-19 vaccination is required for inperson volunteer roles. When considering volunteer opportunities, individuals should review the CDC guidance for people who are at higher risk for severe illness, consult their health care provider, and follow local guidance.
