Celebrating People With Special Needs at the LCBC Manheim Campus, 2392 Mount Joy Road. The following evening, a virtual Night to Shine was held to allow guests to celebrate in the comfort of their homes. “We had 195 guests registered for the event,” Ketcham remarked. “Each guest received a name tag that was taped to their vehicle, so we knew who was in there, as well as a swag bag that was filled with snacks and treats as they drove the designated route.”

Partnership Brings Generations Together BY CATHY MOLITORIS
partnership between high school students and senior citizens has brought joy to both groups as students in Manheim Central High School’s Interact Club have made a connection with residents of Pleasant View Retirement Community in Manheim. “It’s really nice to connect with the community and bridge the gap between teenagers and the older generation,” said Emma Levitan, a 12th-grade student. “I love being able to bring joy to the residents, especially during a time like this past year.” The partnership began after former Interact adviser Lu Ann Wise approached the retirement community about bringing club members in for Christmas caroling a few years ago. “That was so well received, we started thinking, ‘What else could we do?’” recalled Wise, who is retired but volunteers as a club adviser. Soon, the club members were holding technology help nights twice a year. “Teens are really tech savvy, and a lot of our residents are new to technology,” said Aubrey Smith, community engagement coordinator for Pleasant View. “It was great to have the students help our residents with everything from their digital cameras to iPads to printing.”
“I love being able to bring joy to the residents, especially during a time like this past year.” A lot of it was really simple to help with, but some of it was challenging, too. I learned a little bit about flip phones because I didn’t know much about them before I went.” Interact Club has a mission of helping others, said Emmy Varner, club president. “We engage in community service projects,” she explained, adding that the group might clean up a roadside or babysit children during parent-teacher conferences. “This year has looked a little different for us, but we’re still finding ways to connect with other people.” This year, the club is focusing on a pen pal program with the Pleasant View residents, with a modern twist.
“(Club adviser) Lyndsey Rote suggested an idea to make connections with residents who are in quarantine and feeling isolated,” said adviser Amy Burdyn. “This prompted this idea of doing video pals, where club members get to visit with their new friend from Pleasant View by video chat.” In December, club members sent Christmas cards to residents, and at Easter each year, they typically have organized egg hunts for residents and their families. Larissa Stern, a senior at Manheim Central, said the partnership between Interact and Pleasant View has offered her a chance to connect with other people and spread happiness. “I have gotten to meet so many amazing people at Pleasant View, and you get to hear such incredible life stories,” she stated, noting that Christmas caroling is one of her favorite activities to do with the residents. “You can just see the joy on their faces, and it’s wonderful.” Smith said the club has been a welcome addition for the residents at Pleasant View, especially in a particularly difficult year. “The relationships between the senior citizens and the high school students is amazing,” she stated. “It’s meant so much to our residents, because they have been without interaction with other people for far too long.”

Students were paired one-toone with residents, and participants soon realized both parties were benefiting from the technology nights. “I went to my first tech night two years ago,” said Emma Moyer, a junior at Manheim Central. “It was so much fun working with the residents.
For the past five years, the coordinators of Night to Shine, Lancaster Collaboration have had to change the location of the event to accommodate an ever-growing number of guests. This year, they had to completely revamp the celebration, but it still offered a fun night out - and in. The Night to Shine is an annual event sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation to give people with special needs a prom experience. Typically, it’s an inperson event that pairs guests with a volunteer buddy for the evening, but this year looked a little different, said Joell Ketcham, event organizer. This year involved a twonight celebration, starting with a “Shine-Thru” drivethrough event on Feb. 11

Inspired by a desire to give back, two local moms have created a group to help others. Mitzvah Moms was created by Gina Krouse of Lampeter and Gena Harting of Strasburg in the fall of 2020. Initially, the pair focused on collecting items for the homeless, but they then shifted their mission to helping people affected by COVID-19. “COVID started hitting close to home,” Harting said. “ We knew someone at our synagogue who got sick, so we put together a basket for them. Then, someone in my moms’ group was affected. We started tossing around the idea of creating a group called Mitzvah Moms because it

might be other people who would like to do this with us.” The pair created a Facebook group and soon had almost 100 members. “Mitzvah” is a Hebrew word that means “good deed.” The friends use their Facebook group to create gift baskets to give to people affected by COVID-19. “The baskets include a new, soft blanket and self-care products to help with decongestion,” Krouse noted. “They also have snacks because everybody loves food. It’s a basket of comfort items. We wanted to focus on the comfort, warmth and support.” Baskets are catered to the individual, and all recipients are kept as confidential as possible, she stated, adding, “We ask for some basic information about the person receiving the basket ... so they get a basket that really fits their needs and wants.” Mitzvah Moms took off quickly as word spread through the friends’ network as well as their synagogue, Shaarai Shomayim in Lancaster. “Our rabbi is involved with the Interfaith Coalition in Lancaster, and we asked him if he would consider spreading the word among other congregation leaders and passing names our way,” Krouse explained. The women said donations of items for baskets and monetary gifts have been overwhelming, and in fact, they currently have more donations than people to receive them. “It’s a good problem to have,” Harting stated. “We’re facing the challenge of trying to reach out and identify more people who would like a basket.” Harting and Krouse, who have four children among them and homeschool their kids, said Mitzvah Moms has offered a way to set an example for their families while also making a difference in their community. They have been pleasantly surprised by the number of people who have offered to help with their project. “The purpose for this goes way beyond our children and giving from ourselves,” Krouse said. “There are so many people out there who want to help and want to show their love for their community.” Although they are currently focused on the pandemic, the

The Siloam Ethiopia clinic in Harar, Ethiopia, is in need of a blood chemistry machine. “The blood chemistry machine will check hemoglobin count, cholesterol, blood sugar, and liver function,” explained Wegayhu Ketema, one of the founders of the clinic. Ketema went on to explain that the in-depth blood analysis provided by the machine can help detect deficiencies and hidden diseases among the poor and homeless the free clinic serves. To start raising the $25,000 that is needed to purchase the machine, Ketema’s church, Ethiopian Evangelical Church in Lancaster, 175 Church St., Landisville, will offer a curbside Ethiopian meal by donation from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 6. The menu will include doro wat, which is a spicy chicken stew; misir wat, which is a spicy pink lentil; atikilt wat, which includes spicy cabbage, carrot; and potato; and kik alicha, a dish with spicy yellow split peas. Those purchasing meals will have a choice of three dishes served with injera, which is a thin Ethiopian bread. Asked how much she hopes the meal will raise, Ketema refused to speculate. “I don’t want to underestimate the Lord,” she said. Ketema’s faith has already brought her far. A decade ago, the clinic she helped found in Harar was still a dream she had held since the age of 8. Raised in Harar, Ketema would see a nurse driving herself to work each morning and dream of one day becoming a nurse and helping her people. Ironically, Ketema had to leave her homeland to make that happen. “My mother sent us to England to learn English and then to India,” explained Ketema, who was licensed as a nurse in India in 1985. She moved to Djibouti in East Africa, where she worked in a private clinic and became a Christian in 1988. Politics in the Muslim country caused her to flee to Nairobi, Kenya, along with her fiancé, Demeke Getahun, who is now her husband. In 1989, the door opened for them to travel to the U.S. as refugees, relocating first to Sioux Falls, S.D., and then to York, where a Living Word Church was supportive of their church
back in Djibouti. Because she was not licensed in the U.S., Ketema worked as a nurse’s aide in several nursing homes, eventually moving from York to Lancaster and beginning to attend Ethiopian Evangelical. After six years, Ketema obtained her LPN license. She received her RN in 2013. “I love what I do,” said Ketema. “The Lord has been so gracious to me.” In 1999, Ketema felt the Lord leading her to pray about the clinic she hoped to open in Harar. “In 2015, we organized a few friends and started a board,” shared Ketema, who traveled to Ethiopia to assess the feasibility of a clinic in 2015. The clinic began serving patients in 2018. The organization is in the process of digging a fifth well to serve the clinic because water is so scarce in See Siloam pg 7
A patient is treated at Siloam Ethiopia, a free clinic in Harar, Ethiopia. An Ethiopian meal fundraiser will be held on March 6 at Ethiopian Evangelical Church, Landisville, to help purchase a blood chemistry machine for the clinic.

For 35 years, Align Life Ministries has been holding an annual Walk Run for Life fundraiser. This year, the organization formerly known as Susquehanna Valley Pregnancy Services will hold an expanded event called Move for Life: Walk Run Plus. An in-person event will be held on Saturday, May 8, at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. The fundraiser also features a virtual option for participation. “The in-person event will offer a 5K run and 1-mile walk simultaneously, starting at 9 a.m.,” said Heather Muncy, events director for Align Life Ministries. “If an individual or team prefers to participate virtually, they can choose their own safe, healthy, fun activity anytime between now and May 8.” For example, participants may choose to walk, run or even jump rope. The virtual component began last year, Muncy said, when the organization had to shift away from an in-person fundraiser due to the pandemic.
“Participants decided to jump rope, dunk basketballs, take family hikes, bicycle rides, Frisbee, golf, run, walk … the possibilities were endless,” she recalled. “We then realized the opportunity to expand our event in general to include a virtual - or ‘plus’ - option.” Participants can decide the length and time of their activity, she explained, and then submit a photo or short video to show what they did. They can also plan to attend the in-person event. “Those who are participating virtually can join us on May 8 for a grand celebration and pick up their prizes at the same time,” Muncy stated. The inperson event will feature a family-friendly walk and chip-timed 5K run as well as free Kids’ Zones with live entertainment, interactive inflatables, face painting, snow cones and more. Move for Life is an important event for the organization, Muncy noted, adding that it not only helps further the mission of promoting the sacredness of life, but it also helps raise funds to serve more people in need. “It is our biggest fundraising event, providing 15% of our annual

Overall, Chamberlain was pleased with his team’s performance. “We had some guys who performed better than in the regular season,” he said. “I was pleased to see the fight and pleased to see the effort. I like our future and where we are going with it.” BOWLING Jesse Hurst bowled well in the Lancaster-Lebanon League tournament Feb. 24 at Leisure Lanes, but not well enough to advance in the post season. The sophomore missed advancing by 41 pins, finishing with total score of 826 and needing an 867 to move on. The top 20 advanced to the next round in leagues. He finished No. 25 overall in the league tourney. This is a stark improvement from last year when in placed in the top 40 bowlers. Hurst had to make adjustments to the oil on the lanes. In the first two games he rolled a 136 and a 144. After moving over in lanes, he adjusted to the oil to post 187 and 211 in the next two games. After four games he ranked No. 21 overall. Back to his original lanes, he struggled in his fifth game, rolling a 148 and dropping to No. 25. “He did about what I expected,” Barons’ coach Alan Sides said. “He made the adjustment in the middle rounds and was really clicking and then moved back to the original lanes and struggled again. Overall, he did very well.” This ends Manheim’s season. Sides said he will hand out individual awards. Hurst will get the Most Valuable Player award, averaging a 179 score. Aaron Vogel gained Most Improved honors and Landon Statts earned Rookie of the Year. BOYS’ BASKETBALL The Barons are entering the post season playing their best basketball. MC defeated Donegal 70-49 on Feb. 24. Winners of five in a row and beating teams by least a 20-point margin in four of the five victories, the Barons (11-5) are playing strong defense and hitting the open shots on offense. Ahead 41-22 at halftime, the Indians cut the lead to 12 early in the third quarter, but Manheim responded with a 7-0 run and never looked back. Barons’ coach Charlie Fisher said Trey Grube, who finished with 19 points, carried the offense early and Cam Eberly played a strong overall game, posting a teamhigh 24 points and collecting 15 rebounds. “Eberly was awesome the whole game,” Fisher said. “His
energy is amazing. All the role players stepped up.” Judd Novak and Wyatt Becker had great games and Logan Shull, who has started recently as Fisher changed up the lineup, has played well in his new role. With only one game in a week, Fisher said he used the extra time to focus on improving parts of the Barons’ game and preparing for District Three
Class 5A tournament, which will be a new experience for all his players, playing in the postseason for the first time. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The Lady Barons did not play a game this week but used the idle time to prepare for the District Three tournament. This is the second straight season MC, which has a 10-6 record, has made districts.

Blessings Of Hope Seeks Support Blessings of Hope invites community members to help support the organization’s efforts to aid Texas communities as they recover from a recent storm. A semi-truck loaded with water and milk left the Blessings of Hope warehouse in Leola early on Feb. 21 and was scheduled to arrive in the Dallas-Fort Worth area the next morning. Blessings of Hope also planned to send additional truckloads of the prepacked Hands of Hope family boxes, each of which contains approximately 40 pounds of assorted food items. To donate online or to obtain information about sending a donation by mail, readers may visit www.blessingsofhope.com and click on “Give Now.” Additionally, Blessings of Hope is seeking Class A CDL truck drivers who want to join one of the organization’s driver teams. More information is available by calling Durrell at 717-466-1551.
