Homes Of Hope Opens House In Manheim By Ann Mead Ash

About three years ago, Homes of Hope, a program of Love INC, had a presence in Manheim, but a lack of partnering churches caused the committee to dissolve. About 18 months ago, Bill Melone, community care minister with Manheim Brethren in Christ, and Karl McKinney, pastor with Erisman Mennonite Church, connected to form a new committee. Fast forward to March of 2019, and Manheim now has a steering committee of four headed by Melone, as well as a home in the downtown

area occupied by a family that has been approved for the Homes of Hope program. According to Melone, the committee came together with a focus on the need for affordable housing in the area and connected with Love INC, which currently oversees 10 Homes of Hope in eight Lancaster County communities. During the summer of 2018, a house became available in Manheim, and the committee signed a lease and enlisted volunteer help in preparing the home for a family. “People in the community joined together to help with decorating, and all the furniture has been donated,” said Melone, who noted

that members of the sewing circle at Erisman Mennonite have donated comforters. The comforters, coupled with furniture donated by other volunteers, create a decor that is both contemporary and comfortable. “It has really come together,” said Melone. To qualify, families must complete an intake assessment with a Homes of Hope coordinator. “(Candidates) must be families with children and typically (live) in the school district or an adjoining school district,” explained Melone, who added that referrals often come from the school district’s social worker. The family must have experienced homelessness, See Homes Of Hope pg 5

Rick Thompson (left), a member of the Warwick Homes of Hope committee; Bill Melone (seated in center), the head of the Manheim Homes of Hope committee; and Karl McKinney (right), a member of the Manheim committee, are happy to have a family living in the house that has been prepared in Manheim to aid families in overcoming homelessness.

Masons Plan Spring Pie Fundraiser Local Masons will once again volunteer to bake 4,000 pies this year in support of the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster. The spring and fall fruit pie sales generate approximately 40 percent of the center’s annual operating budget. Spring pie orders will be accepted through Wednesday, March 13, and will be available for pickup just in time for Easter on Wednesday, April 17, between 2 and 6 p.m. at various distribution points throughout Lancaster County, including Ephrata, Mount Joy, Elizabethtown, Quarryville, and Lancaster. Pies will be available fresh or frozen in peach crumb, apple crumb, and cherry crumb varieties; pumpkin and sugar-free apple pies will also be available. The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster currently serves 30 children See Pie Sale pg 6

The Lancaster County Conservation District (LCCD) is holding its 45th annual tree seedling sale. Orders for conifers, hardwoods, wildlife food sources, groundcover, and pollinator-friendly perennials will be accepted through Monday, March 11. The preordered and prepaid plants will be ready for pickup on Thursday, April 11, in the auditorium at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. “That’s the weekend before Easter,” remarked education coordinator Sallie Gregory. “Hopefully folks will consider purchasing (plants) to celebrate Easter and Earth Day, which is on April 22.” Gregory explained that conservation districts were created in response to the Dust Bowl, in which windstorms caused massive soil erosion in the Midwest in the early 1930s. Men and boys employed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) planted trees around the nation, including Pennsylvania, to reduce erosion, especially along streambanks. The first Earth Day was observed in 1970, and the LCCD launched its first tree seedling sale in 1974 to celebrate Earth Day and honor the CCC. “It combined the effort to make trees available to everybody and conserve soil and waterways,” Gregory shared. The tree sale has continued for nearly a half-century. It is

the only fundraising event for the LCCD, which, as an annex to county government, receives some public funding as well as grants and private contributions. The funds are used to provide education and watershed programs, which are held in classrooms or on individual waterways where volunteers are working on stream cleanups, Gregory said. The education programs are available for teachers in kindergarten through grade 12, as well as college classes, and all lessons meet state standards for environment and ecology. LCCD also works with classes to perform stream studies, which assess the health of a waterway by cataloging and counting plant, insect, and fish life. There is a second, equally important reason for the seedling sale. “ We’re making trees and other plants accessible for county residents to put in the soil to keep it in place so it doesn’t erode due to wind or rain,” Gregory said. Many of the plants also serve dual purposes, whether it is providing food for people or wildlife or acting as windbreaks or Christmas trees. The sale organizers make sure they are offering as many native species as possible, and they work with area nurseries to get appropriate stock for the sale. New offerings this year include coralberry, which holds its bright berries through the start of winter, and three selfpollinating fruit trees: Montmorency sour cherry, Klondike white peach, and Coralstar peach. The majority of trees on the sale list are bare root stock that will be dipped in a root preservative gel so that buyers will not have to plant their purchases immediately. As the trees are seedlings, the sale is also offering tubes with stakes designed to protect young plants from stressors and potential damage from deer, moles, voles, and other creatures that would eat their roots or stems. To see a pictorial description list of all species and access an order form, readers may visit www.lancasterconservation.org. For more information or to request that an order form be mailed to them, folks may call the LCCD at 717-299-5361, ext. 5. Payment is due when orders are placed and must be sent to the LCCD. The office is located at the Farm and Home Center and is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays.

backpack project. According to group president Nadine Mazingo, 798 hats were made in 2018; about 175 of them went to the backpack project, and the rest were distributed among six other Manheim-area projects, including the Manheim Central Food Pantry and Barons’ Closet. Group members also collect food donations for the Manheim Central Food Pantry. Other efforts have included purchasing coats to be included in the Blankets for Barons community project. The ladies were also involved in providing personal care kits for Lutheran World Relief. As part of this effort, they donated the needed items and then assembled the kits at a meeting. Meetings often feature speakers as well, with topics varying from being a dementia caregiver to the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to a presentation on flowers, birds and butterflies.

The speaker at the February meeting, pastor Bill Malone, community care pastor for Manheim, spoke about the Manheim Project. The speaker for the next meeting, set for Monday, March 18, at 1:30 p.m., will be Manheim Police Chief Joseph Stauffer. He will share about safety in the home and around town. The ladies also have “just for fun” meetings such as their “I know a story” meeting, which helps them to get to know each other better. The meetings always begin with devotions and conclude with refreshments, which can be home-baked items or even a sundae bar. The Daughters of Zion group meets the third Monday of every month at 1:30 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church. Area ladies are invited to join the group, and there are no dues or criteria. For more information, women may call the church office at 717-665-5880.

Five families have lived in the current house, which was acquired for use in 2016. “We have had varied experiences (with families),” explained Thompson. “Sometimes people have run the course and may or may not be equipped to make the jump to independence, but we have had some who made it.” He noted that homelessness is not usually the only issue facing families who take part in the program. He named health issues, transportation issues, and employment issues among the problems that the families must overcome. “The jobs of the mentors and budget coaches are admirable,” he said, adding that families that take part should always benefit from receiving education that they can transfer to future situations. The Warwick Homes of Hope committee currently has about a dozen participants representing nine churches. “Most are smaller churches, and this is their way of contributing to the housing needs of local people,” explained Thompson. although qualifying families may be staying with family members. A typical stay in a Homes of Hope home lasts four to five months, although a family may stay six months under certain circumstances. Just as important as the physical home is the support that the occupying family will receive from trained mentors and budget coaches. Rick Thompson, who is a member of the Warwick Homes of Hope committee as a representative of St. James Catholic Church in Lititz, said that regular contact with mentors and budget coaches is essential. “The financial circumstances of these families (call for) weekly guidance with the budget coach mentors,” said Thompson, who added that goals and expectations for the families are set by the coordinator as well as the budget coaches and mentors. Financial goals involve finding ways to save for the security deposit and first month’s rent on the family’s next apartment, but other types of goals are set as well. “(Goals may include) getting on track regarding doctors’ appointments or making sure transportation for everyone in the household is taken care of,” said Thompson. Thompson noted that the Warwick program has been in place for more than five years.

from Lancaster, York, and Chester counties, offering free OrtonGillingham remediation for dyslexia. The center is a nonprofit organization supported through various fundraising events, including Easter and Thanksgiving pie sales, a walk in October, the Extraordinary Give, apple dumpling and chicken corn soup sales, and the sale of car wash coupons. The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster is located in the Masonic Center of Lancaster County, 213 W. Chestnut St., Lancaster, whose members run many of the dyslexia program’s fundraisers. For more than two decades, the Scottish Rite Masons, Northern Jurisdiction, have helped to lead the national effort to

support children and their families as they overcome the obstacles of dyslexia through their financial support of 45 active centers in 13 states. Dyslexia is a neurologically based condition that affects language acquisition, processing, and decoding. Recent research suggests dyslexia affects up to 20 percent of the population, reported Children’s Dyslexia Center director Heather Hinkel. People with dyslexia typically have above-average intelligence, but they can struggle in a traditional academic setting. Those who do not receive help can suffer devastating personal consequences; Hinkel noted that dyslexia tops the list of reasons teenagers drop out of school. Dyslexia is treatable with remediation.

with three 200 games to end above his 195 league average. “He bowled the way I felt he could, Sides said. “I am extremely proud of them both. “They bowled well and positioned themselves to be able to participate in the postseason. Henry also finished third in Pennsylvania Junior Bowlers Tournament at Clearview Lanes on March 3, earning a $50 scholarship. Sides, in his first season as head coach, expressed his thanks to all his bowlers, who overcame a huge rebuilding year to finish third in Section Three of the Lancaster-Lebanon League. The entire team is slated to return next year, plus Sides said he knows of two eighth-grade boys who may be joining the team who have junior league experience. “It was a job well done, Sides said about his team’s effort this season. “I look forward to seeing what next year brings for our team.

The future looks great for Manheim Central bowling. The team should return six juniors and three sophomores, and two juniors ended the season on a high note last week. On March 1, Brandon Henry finished 35th out of 191 male bowlers and Lauren Michael finished 92nd out of 145 female bowlers in the Regional Tournament. The girls’ tourney was at Clearview Lanes, and the boys’ tourney was at Leisure Lanes. Henry, the Barons’ anchor for much

of the season, rolled scores of 206, 169, 203, 257, and 225 for 1060 and a 212 average while Michael, who finished 15th in league play, bowled regional scores of 166, 137, 187, 151, and 130 for a 771 total, averaging a 154. Barons’ coach Alan Sides liked the way both bowlers finished their seasons. “I was pleased overall with both Lauren and Brandon’s season, Sides said. “Lauren started the year strong and got her average up to 166. Later in the season she was releasing her ball wrong. Our assistant coach Marcus Michael (also her dad) worked hard with her, and she seems to have corrected it. Still, she finished well enough to make 15th in the league. In regionals, she started well, Sides said, but had a slight hiccup with the 137 then came on strong with the 187. Her last two games were a struggle, he said. For Henry, he started well, had a bad game, and then finished great

An image shows what Lancaster Evangelical Free Church is expected to look like after a significant expansion. Lancaster Evangelical Free Church (LEFC) held a groundbreaking celebration on Feb. 10. The congregation cheered as temporary modular buildings were demolished to prepare the way for a significant expansion. The modular buildings housed the church office and other ministries for more than two decades. The vision behind the expansion is called Creating Space/Expecting Harvest. In addition to new office space, LEFC will add a 1,100-seat worship space, a large lobby, secure classrooms and large gathering spaces for children, a youth ministry space, additional classrooms for adults and community

groups, and a permanent baptistry. LEFC was started in the late 1970s by a group of Lancaster Bible College professors. The first official meeting was held in the Neffsville Fire Hall in 1980. The congregation later moved to the Lititz Rec Center and then purchased the Rome Mill Restaurant, now known as The Mill, in 1985. Ten years later, LEFC dedicated a new building at the current site on Pierson Road, across the street from The Mill. Since then, several expansions have been completed. According to senior pastor Tony Hunt, the new expansion is scheduled to be finished and in use by Easter of 2020.

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg announced that it has reached the $250,000 goal for the Ready for the Roundhouse fundraising campaign for the preservation of five historic steam locomotives. The nonprofit Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania took the lead in the Ready for the Roundhouse campaign, which kicked off with a $50,000 matching fund challenge from the Pennsylvania Railroad Technical and Historical Society. The campaign began in November 2016, and the $250,000 goal was met in December 2018. The five steam locomotives that are part of the Ready for the Roundhouse campaign are keystone pieces that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and are part of the Pennsylvania Railroad Historic Collection. They include Pennsylvania Railroad M1b No. 6755, K4s No. 3750, L1s No. 520, H10s No. 7688, and B6sb No. 1670.
