Have Dinner With Dungy BY CATHY MOLITORIS
s it marks its 15th anniversary, Manheim-based Men of Iron will host a fundraising event featuring keynote speaker Tony Dungy. The Iron Sharpens Iron Dinner will be held on Tuesday, April 19, at the Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square, 25 S. Queen St., beginning at 5:30 p.m. Men of Iron was formed with the goal of encouraging men to grow in the “five F’s,” said Justin Watkins, vice president of fundraising development for the organization. Those are faith, family, friends, fitness and finances. “Our vision is to change a culture, one man at a time,” Watkins explained. “ We believe in providing resources to equip men and grow godly leaders.” The organization’s connection
“Our vision is to change a culture, one man at a time ... We believe in providing resources to equip men and grow godly leaders.” ‘Iron Sharpens Iron,’” recalled Watkins, who noted that the shirt went viral, prompting Dungy to call the organization. “He said, ‘This is Tony Dungy. I’ve got a group of men who meet, and we call our group Iron Sharpens Iron,’” Watkins stated. “He saw our fundraiser on Instagram and wanted to connect

with us.” Fast forward a few years, and Dungy will come to Lancaster to speak about his thoughts on mentorship, a key component of Men of Iron’s mission. “He’s used mentorship throughout his entire career, from coaching to writing and ministry,” said Watkins of Dungy, who has written multiple New York Times bestsellers and is a national spokesman for All Pro Dad, a fatherhoodfocused program. “It’s going to be really exciting to hear what he has to say.” Along with Dungy’s speech, Iron Sharpens Iron will feature food, live music, a silent auction and more. “The focus of the night is to tell some stories of the impact the ministry has had on the past 15 years and paint a picture of ... what happens when men pursue things that really matter,” Watkins noted. Proceeds from the event will be used to fund projects of Men of Iron, including oneon-one mentorship programs, small group opportunities and men’s retreats. Watkins said the Iron Sharpens Iron event will be an opportunity for people to not only learn about the mission of Men of Iron, but to also potentially take the next steps to transform their lives. “It’s going to be a great date night,” he said. “It’s not just for men to attend. It’s going to be a fun night to go out with your partner or with a group of friends and have fun. You’re going to get to hear stories of the people who have been impacted by Men of Iron and how it’s changed their lives. We’re really looking forward to sharing everything about Men of Iron, and Coach Dungy is the icing on the cake for us.” For more information or to purchase tickets to Iron Sharpens Iron, visit https://menofiron.org. The registration deadline is Tuesday, April 12.

Women’s Club Will Host Bingo BY CATHY MOLITORIS
For a chance to pick up a cute new accessory, make plans to attend the Women’s Club of Manheim’s designer purse bingo on Saturday, April 2. The event will be held at the Manheim Farm Show Exhibition Center, 502 Adele Ave., beginning at 1 p.m. “We’ll be doing both an in-person
bingo and a virtual bingo,” said organizer Shayna Sharp. “We’re limiting tickets inside to 250 people, so we can have some social distancing, and then we’ll also have the option for people to purchase tickets and play virtually through a Zoom link. … We wanted to give options for people, whether they are comfortable getting together in person or if they feel more comfortable participating from home.” See Bingo pg 3
Inviting the public to a designer purse bingo are Women’s Club of Manheim members (from left) Karen Lewis, Shayna Sharp and Robin Buchmoyer.
Servant Stage Will Present “Songs For A New World” BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When audiences come to a performance of “Songs for a New World,” they can expect something a little different than a traditional musical. “It’s like paying for one show, but you’re actually seeing 15,” said Wally Calderon, who will direct the show for Servant Stage. As Calderon explained, “Songs For A New World” is a collection of songs that are intertwined. See Songs pg 5

Songs from pg 1 “It’s a very interesting piece of theater,” he stated. “People are used to going to see a show where they are following one story in the same setting, but in this show, these are 15 different stories. Every song is its own story, its own character. They are all tied together through a couple of themes.” Those themes include the moment of decision, when people must choose to back away from something, move forward or shift gears entirely, he said. “The decision might be about love, or it might be a decision about family or about life in general or about a career,” he remarked. “When I’m watching it, I find myself getting caught up and wanting to hear more from each song, but we have to go on to the next one.” Written by Tony Awardwinning composer Jason Robert Brown, the show was
created in 1995, but it isn’t dated, Calderon said. “There are so many themes in this show that are still relevant, especially in today’s world,” he noted. Some songs feature heavier themes and others are more comedic. “All of the songs have aspects that are applicable to the lives of our audience,” Calderon explained. “The songs are a direct commentary to our audience, telling us that we all face these tough decisions and these moments when we make them, and we may think we’re the only ones going through that, but we’re not. We’re not alone.” “Songs for a New World” features four roles, but the Servant Stage production is double cast. The performers are Brittany Adair Beitzel, Cassandra Cummings, Joshua William Green, Paul Michael Hughes, Asia Littlejohn,

Jenna Leigh Miller, Geoffery Morgan, and Ian SanchezHerasme. With a mix of solo numbers and ensemble pieces, the show is almost entirely sung through, with only small bits of transition between songs. “The music is beautiful and powerful, but the show is not done too often partly because it’s so vocally demanding,” Calderon said. “We have the singers to do it well.” “Songs for a New World” will be performed at The Junction Center, 1875 Junc-
tion Road, Manheim, on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from Friday, March 11 through Sunday, March 27. Performances will be at 7 p.m. on Fridays, at 3 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays and at 3 p.m. on Sundays. Barbush Finishes Fourth, Qualifies for States
BY ERIC G. STARK
Brett Barbush qualified for the state tournament, thanks to his fourth-place finish in districts. He was pinned in the third-place bout against Northern York’s Cole Bartram, but the talented 172-pound junior had a heck of a tourney. Barbush earned his spot in the PIAA State Tournament at Hershey’s Giant Center on March 10-12 after beating Governor Mifflin’s Cole Long, 10-3 in the consolation semifinals at Spring Grove High School. Barbush earned a decision against his Big Spring opponent in the round of 16. He earned a pin at 2:16 in the quarterfinals against a foe from Dallastown. As great as those wins were, Barons’ coach Quint Eno said Barbush’s best match might have been his first one against Big Spring’s Clayton Hetrick. “Brett wrestled well,” Eno said. “He experienced some new situations and competition this weekend that only made him stronger. I think his most impressive performance was his round one bout. He was doing everything right, but his opponent somehow came out on top on a few of our attacks. Brett had to fight his way back from a six-point deficit to force sudden victory where he scored the winning takedown (9-7 win). His composure and faith in his training
set him up for that win.” Eno said this this was a great win heading into postseason, as it showed that things aren’t always going to go your way, even when we’re doing the right things. Barbush learned he can stay calm and stay focused when his back is against the wall, Eno said. From a confidence standpoint, Barbush also faced two of the top guys in the state at 172. He knows where he wants to be and those matches only added to that desire, Eno noted. “And if there’s anything I’ve learned about Brett,” Eno said, “it’s that he will bring a relentless effort to achieve something. We’re looking forward to seeing more growth from him at the state tournament.” Uriah Warner put together a strong weekend at 132 pounds and was close to joining Barbush, falling two wins shy of a trip to Chocolatetown. The senior lost a 2-1 heartbreaker to Jared Fulton in the thirdround consolations. Warner suffered a 7-2 loss in the quarterfinals to Spring Grove’s Ian Vega, who earned a silver medal in the tourney. Warner battled his way through the consolation bracket. “ W hat stood out was his focus, his commitment to game plans, and the joy he had competing,” Eno said. “He was present and competed in every
position, every situation. And that’s exactly what we talked about the week leading up to districts. Unfortunately, we came up short in the consolations. We’re happy with how Uriah competed. There will always be things we wish were different but, in the end, he did everything he had to do to put him in a position to qualify. Sometimes, it just doesn’t work out. And when it doesn’t, how we respond matters. We’re proud of how Uriah responded.” Freshman Brodie Daugherty lost his first-round bout at 145 by a fall to Northern York’s Timothy Johnson and lost 9-2 in the consolations to Spring Grove’s Jarod Baker. “Brodie had a tough go this weekend,” Eno said. “but we love how competitive he is, especially for only being a freshman. We’ll continue to work on harnessing that competitiveness and clean up some technique. And when we do, watch out. He will do great things.” The Lady Barons battled and even held leads against the topseeded Mechanicsburg (21-1), but eventually came up five points short, 45-40 in the District Three Class 5A semifinals on March 1 at Mechanicsburg. The Wildcats held a 9-1 before Central rallied to make it close, trailing 13-11 after the first quarter. The Barons were aided by an 8-2 run, cutting the
Staff photo
lead to 11-9. Maddie Knier (19 points) drained a 3-pointer to cut the Wildcats lead to 15-14. Manheim came all the way back midway through the second after Rachel Nolt (15 points) nailed a 3-pointer to put the Barons ahead 17-15. The Wildcats led 25-20 at halftime. Central scored the first four points to start the third quarter and cut Mechanicsburg’s lead to 25-24. Late in the third, the Wildcats went up 30-24. They led 30-29 after three quarters. The Barons took a 36-35 lead with 5:08 to play and led 38-37 with 2:51 to go but could not hold the lead. The Barons converted only 10 of 20 foul shots. The Wildcats, on the other hand, were 11-for-13 from the charity stripe and won the game at the foul line. Manheim got to the semis by beating West York 50-41on Feb. 25 at Doe Run. The Bulldogs jumped out to 2-0 advantage, but that was their only lead of the night. Manheim led by six at intermission, but the Bulldogs evened the score at the end of three. Manheim pulled away in the fourth. Knier, who had 19 points, Kaylie Kroll (11 points) and Abbie Reed (nine) all hit key buckets, as the Barons pulled away. Barons’ coach Tyson Hays said the Barons were focused and ready to play. “(The) kids being locked in and wanting to win together,” Hayes said about the keys to the win. “We were balanced in scoring, rebounding and you’re hard to beat when you have that. The kids have shown tremendous growth from the
start of the season until now and I just couldn’t be prouder and happier watching them compete.” BOYS’ BASKETBALL The Barons kept the game close for three quarters, but Palmyra (19-6) got hot, going on a 21-9 run in the final stanza to pull away for a 64-50 victory in the District Three Class 4A consolations Feb. 28. The loss ends Manheim’s season with an 18-10 record. Central kept things close thanks to Trey Grube, who finished with a team-high 31 points, nailing seven 3-pointers. The Barons were still alive in the consolation bracket after they beat Mechanicsburg 59-49 on Feb. 24. Central never trailed in the game. Grube, who finished with 21 points, scored
Manheim’s first eight points. He was 10-for-10 from the charity stripe. Judd Novak added 14 points and Collin Thompson added 12. BOWLING Holly Hunt was a late addition to the district bowling tourney at the ABC North Lanes. She started off strong with her first two games in the 180s, but she struggled in the final three games and did not make it out of the first round. Adjusting to the oil patterns on the lanes played a factor, Barons’ coach Alan Sides said. “They bowled five games across five pairs of lanes,” Sides said. “So, each pair definitely needed to adjust on. Nerves could have been a small problem. Or possibly frustration after the good start. We still were very proud of her.”

Wiederseim To Sell Collection Of Ed And Carol Stoudt Of Stoudts’ Black Angus Brewery and Pub Sale To Take Place In Phoenixville On July 24
This is a vintage Wurlitzer juke box. Wiederseim Associates is pleased to offer the private collection of Carol and Ed Stoudt for auction on Saturday, July 24, at 9 a.m. The sale includes the contents of the legendary Stoudt’s Black Angus Restaurant and Brewery in Adamstown, Pa., as well as Ed and Carol’s private collection from their home. After over 30 years in business, Ed and Carol have sold the business and are seeking their next adventure.
The couple opened the Black Angus Antique Mall along with the restaurant and beer garden in the 1980s. Business was good. Why not open a brewery? Based on German beers brewed in the Reinheitsgebot tradition, the couple opened the brewery in 1987, with Carol becoming the first female brewmaster in the U.S. since Prohibition. Through the years, the couple traveled and collected extensively
for their business and home. They assembled items such as Black Forest carved furniture (including two tall case clocks), whimsical circus novelties, Art Nouveau brass chandeliers for the beer hall, carousel horses and an unusual carousel
running rooster, vintage posters, a large collection of German steins, a restored 1932 Auburn Convertible and a 1937 Ford Woody, partially restored, all of which will be in the July 24 sale. “If you’ve ever been to Stoudt’s, you’ll be very familiar with the items in this sale and won’t want to miss it. Their Oktoberfests were the best! Ed in his lederhosen leading the procession, the beer hall with great German food and the German band,” said Ted Wiederseim, auctioneer and owner of Wiederseim Associates Inc. “The Stoudt sale will be our first live sale in over a year, and we’re very excited about getting back to business as usual.” Bidding will be live/in-person as well as live online through Bidsquare, Invaluable and Liveauctioneers. A preview starts Monday, July 19, and runs through Friday, July 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale will be held at Wiederseim’s facility, located at 1041 W. Bridge St., Phoenixville, Pa.
