SSC To Present “The Last Five Years”
By Ann Mead Ash
For at least five years, pastor Rodney Martin of Lititz Mennonite Church, church member Bev Knight, and several volunteers from the area have been opening Peter’s Porch to Lititz residents. Peter’s Porch offers breakfast, a children’s clothing bank, and a food pantry to those in need. “Anyone is welcome,” said Martin, who noted that everything at Peter’s Porch is free. Peter’s Porch, which is open every second Saturday of the month from 8 to 10 a.m., is a ministry of the church, which is located at the corner of Water and Front streets in Lititz. Peter’s Porch is not held in August because the second Saturday coincides with the Lititz Rotary Club Craft Show, and the church youth group uses the parking lot as a fundraiser. According to Knight, the breakfasts See Peter’s Porch pg 3

Center, which both offer dental hygiene programs. General practitioner dentists and dental hygienists are needed to volunteer their time and services at the clinic. Nissly said that Hope Within Dental is also in need of specialists, such as oral surgeons, endodontists, and periodontists, who are willing to have patients referred to their offices for treatment as needed. Dental professionals who are willing to volunteer in any capacity are encouraged to call Hope Within Ministries at 717-367-9797, email tina.nissly@hopewithin.org, or visit www.hopewithin.org. Thanks to the generosity of numerous businesses and individuals who have donated finances, equipment, supplies, and time, McAlester and Nissly said the dental wing is ready to go. However, additional donations will be accepted as there are still a few “wish list” items, such as an autoclave, that the organization would like to purchase. “Dentistry is expensive to run. It’s not inexpensive in any way, shape, or form,” noted Nissly. Monetary donations are being sought to purchase the consumables needed to provide dental services. Individuals and businesses interested in contributing toward the mission of Hope Within Dental may do so by visiting www.hopewithin.org. People may also support the work of Hope Within Ministries at the organization’s Ethiopian dinner and silent auction fundraiser, set to take place on Saturday, April 25, at Hershey Free Church, 330 Hilltop Road, Hummelstown. Tickets and event details will be available closer to the date. To stay informed about the latest happenings at Hope Within Ministries, readers may go to www.facebook.com/ hopewithinministries.

Bank. Recipients must register annually by providing an estimated household income and a signature. A paper must be signed each month to signify that food was received. “In the foyer, there are volunteers who will have (the recipient’s name) in the computer, and they sign a paper saying they picked up (a bag of food). It’s a very easy process,” said Martin. The church orders food from the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank website, and the food items are delivered to Lancaster on Thursdays. “We bag (food) on Thursday night,” said Martin, who explained that each family that signs up receives one bag of food. If the family has five members or more, they may receive a second bag. “If we order fresh produce, the truck comes Saturday morning,” said Martin, who added that fresh produce is also received from the Community Action Program in Lancaster. Weis Markets also provides frozen meat through the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. “We could have an assortment of everything from ground beef to turkey,” he said, adding that on any given Saturday up to 70 bags of food may be handed out. Both Knight and Martin noted that Peter’s Porch has always had plenty of volunteers. “We have close to 25 volunteers,” said Knight, who remarked that the kitchen volunteers work together smoothly and easily fill in for each other when one is late or cannot be present. “Our volunteers are not just from See Peter’s Porch pg 10

Girls on the Run (GOTR) of Lancaster and Lebanon is living up to its name with a busy spring schedule, which is keeping organizers on the run. GOTR will launch its spring season on Monday, March 16; the organization will hold a scholarship fundraising banquet on Friday, April 17; and the first GOTR summer camp program will be held from Monday, June 22, to Friday, June 26. This year’s season will include 100 teams in school districts in Lancaster and Lebanon counties using two different curriculums. The program, designed for girls ages 8 to 14, will teach about self-esteem, positive body image, and setting and achieving goals. The organization offers two curricula: GOTR, for girls in grades three through five, and Heart and Sole, designed for girls in sixth through eighth grades. Heart and Sole is facilitated by coaches, but led by the team members. The curriculum includes both discussion and journaling with a goal of giving girls the tools they need to navigate middle school and be successful in high school. “We are excited that in our 11th year in Lancaster and Lebanon, we have our biggest Heart and Sole season to date coming up, said Jennifer West, who serves as program director for the organization. Girls who wish to take part in GOTR or Heart and Sole may visit www.gotrlancaster.org for more information. Readers who have questions about the program may contact West at jennifer.west@ girlsontherun.org. GOTR’s Kickin’ Up Kindness banquet will be held on Friday, April 17, at Brick Gables, 800 E. Newport Road, Lititz, beginning at 6:30 p.m. According to Sarah Yohe, development director for GOTR, the theme will be “An Evening of Empowerment, and the goal will be to raise funds for the GOTR financial assistance program. Yohe said GOTR expects 200 guests, including community leaders, GOTR sponsors, and community members. Betancourt Grabs PIAA Gold
R056710
Walking between cars on the way to Billy Chamberlain’s truck in the parking lot at the Giant Center in Hershey Saturday night, Will Betancourt turned to his coach and shared what he was feeling. “Coach, Betancourt said, “I feel so free. I feel a weight lifted off me and I feel such relief. Just hours removed from winning the PIAA Class 3A State Championship at 120 pounds and his high school wrestling career at Manheim Central complete, Betancourt couldn’t help feeling a huge millstone lifted off his neck. Chamberlain, his wrestling coach, could relate for two reasons. First, Chamberlain was also a state champion, winning the same weight class (previously 119 pounds) 14 years ago for Cumberland Valley. He knew the sense of relief that came when reality met high expectations.
Secondly, Chamberlain felt the pressure of coaching a wrestler with such talent. He knew Betancourt, who finished fifth in the state last year, was capable of winning gold, and it was his job as coach to make sure he put together the correct plan and guided his star pupil properly. It is safe to say both coach and wrestler were feeling relief in that parking lot in Hershey. “Kids always ask me what it’s like to win a state title, Chamberlain said. “It is a freeing feeling. Fulfillment. A relief. “Honestly, he said, “it was more awesome to coach a state champion than to be a state champion. Just to be able to see all the hard work put in and be a part of that, it’s unbelievable. Chamberlain knows about being successful on the mat. Besides winning a state title, the Manheim coach won 110 matches during his high school career. That’s a great accomplishment, but falls dramatically short of Betancourt’s career mark of 147-13, a school record
Fire & Ice Bingo
for victories. Besides becoming the ninth Manheim Central wrestler to win a state championship, Betancourt won four straight District Three titles and four consecutive Lancaster-Lebanon League crowns. Yet, ending his high school career without a gold medal at states would have felt unfulfilling, Chamberlain said. Betancourt qualified for states as a freshman, placed seventh as a sophomore and fifth as a junior. His wrestling resume shows consistency to better himself, but would be incomplete without taking one more important step - the gold medal. “Without a doubt. Not winning a state title would have felt unsatisfying,â€? Chamberlain said. “All that training. You start to question things, and the last thing I wanted was him to question his training. He trained hard and left no doubts. “It solidifies how good he is,â€? Chamberlain said about Betancourt. “There will be no discussion of well, he had a good career, but ‌ No, he’s the best. He earned the right to say he’s a state champion.â€? In the finals, Betancourt defeated Seneca Valley’s Dylan Chappell 4-2. Chappell was a former state runner-up, but Betancourt was in control, riding him out for two minutes in the second period, mentally and physically breaking down his opponent, Chamberlain said. Up 4-0, Chamberlain said Betancourt had the wits to give up a reverse, knowing Chappell could not turn him. In the semifinals, Betancourt trailed 4-3 after a takedown put him behind with about a minute remaining in the third period against Nazareth’s Andrew
Smith. Chamberlain said he never doubted that his wrestler would find a way to win. He thought Betancourt would earn an escape and get the bout to overtime, but Betancourt had other plans, working into position for a reverse with 12 seconds left and earning the two points with four seconds remaining in the match. Betancourt cruised to a 7-0 triumph in his opening match. It was his quarterfinal bout against West Chester Henderson’s Killian Delaney that had Chamberlain nervous. Besides Delaney being a state runner-up as sophomore and placing seventh last year, he and Betancourt are best friends. They vacation together. They both chose Lock Haven University so they can room together. The two talk together every day. Chamberlain worried the most about this match because beating a friend physically, someone who knows you and your moves, is a completely different ball game. Betancourt held on for a 4-3 victory. Despite losing, Delaney showed support and stayed with Betancourt and encouraged him in the rest of his matches. Betancourt remained laser-focused. Occasionally, Chamberlain reminded him to stay cool, calm and collected. “The idea is that it is your time, if you don’t try to force it, Chamberlain said. “I truly believed, no matter what, he was going to win. It was his destiny. BASKETBALL A total of six boys and girls basketball players earned Lancaster-Lebanon League All-Star honors, as voted on by league coaches. Making First Team in Section Three were junior Cam Eberly, who averaged

who averaged 16.8 points and hit 22 treys, also made the First Team in the section. She was joined on this squad by senior Kassidy Michael, who posted 9.3 points a game and connected on 9 3pointers. Making the Second Team was senior Laura Good, who averaged 11 points a game.

to double-cast the musical, which takes an intimate look at the story of the seemingly doomed marriage of 20-something New Yorkers Cathy, a struggling actress, and Jamie, an aspiring writer. Alyssa Dienner and Adam Dienner will be performing the weekend of March 13 to 15. Larissa Melbert and Sean Meara will star in performances on March 20 to 22. “Both casts are very good at storytelling. From auditions through callbacks and rehearsals, they have done an outstanding job of telling the story,” emphasized Schoening. “The Last Five Years” will mark Schoening’s directing debut at SSC; however, he has directed several performances at Oyster Mill Playhouse in Camp Hill. He will not only be directing but playing in the pit orchestra for the performances at SSC. “It is easily one of the toughest scores I’ve ever played,” Schoening noted. “As a composer, Jason Robert Brown is one of my biggest inspirations,” said Schoening. “Every time you hear his music, you can feel it and you can visualize everything that’s happening in the show without actually seeing it.” “He’s just a genius writer. His style is unmatched,” continued Schoening. Alyssa and Adam, who are married in

The performances also happen to fall on the couple’s actual five-year anniversary adding an extra air of excitement to the experience. Both actors have appeared in numerous shows at SSC and Ephrata Performing Arts Center, as well as other theaters throughout the central Pennsylvania region. Melbert and Meara, who will play Cathy and Jamie, respectively, on the weekend of March 20 to 22, said that audiences are in for a treat with the show’s incredible music as well as the unusual timeline in which the couple’s story unfolds onstage. “What makes (‘The Last Five Years’) unique is that is it told from two different perspectives but set in two different time periods,” explained Meara. Schoening said that audiences will leave with plenty to think about when it comes to relationships. “I want everyone to know that they’re watching a very universal, human moment onstage,” Schoening stated. Interested individuals may purchase tickets at www.susquehannastageco.com or at the box office prior to each performance. Martin said that he appreciates the sense of community that has developed during Peter’s Porch, noting that senior citizens, young couples, and people with children often attend. “Some people come to pick up food and don’t stay for breakfast, but some come for breakfast who don’t qualify for food, he said. “You see all kinds of fellowship and interaction. Readers who want to learn more about the church may visit www.lititzmc.org.

The Early Childhood Education program at the Mount Joy campus of the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC) was recently designated as a CDA Gold Standard program following a quality review of its training and student services by the Council for Professional Recognition. The CDA Gold Standard award validates and acknowledges that an institution provides high-quality programming, training, and student support in early childhood education (ECE). The award demonstrates that an education program has in place the high-quality training and student services that ECE students need in order to prepare to earn the Child Development Associate
