meals will include green beans, coleslaw, applesauce, and a choice from a variety of homemade desserts. Assorted beverages will be available, as well. Attendees may eat on-site or take a meal to go. Quarts of potpie will also be available for purchase to take home. According to organizer Gail Ruhl, mission team members get together in the morning before the event to cook up the potpie, which includes 150 pounds of roaster chicken, potatoes, and homemade noodles as part of the famous church recipe. The team knows that “many hands make light work,” and organizers help the process move along. “Curt Diffenderfer is our go-to guy,” Ruhl mentioned. “He is the one who leads the kitchen and makes sure everything is running smoothly.” Funds raised from the event will help the mission work of the church in myriad ways. Ruhl noted that some monies are earmarked for local organizations such as food banks, while additional funds are sent to worldwide missions. A focus for this year’s fundraiser is the Mission Outreach Team’s upcoming trip to

Clendenin, W.Va., from June 15 to 22. The team plans to travel to the town in the Appalachia area along the Elk River, where participants will help rebuild several homes and buildings affected by catastrophic flooding in 2016. “This is a more impoverished area that is still recovering and in need of help,” Ruhl shared. The team, consisting of teenagers and adults, plans to help with construction and other odd jobs as needed. Fundraisers like the potpie dinner are a key part of the Mission Outreach Team’s ability to serve locally, nationally, and internationally. While the events serve to offset the costs of travel and material assistance, the fundraiser gatherings are also a way for the local community to gather in fellowship and fun. “(The potpie dinner) really is a nice event where people can come and relax and just enjoy a good homemade meal and some fellowship with friends and family,” Ruhl said. “Folks can also get to know Ruhl’s Church and see what we’re about.” For additional details on the chicken potpie dinner, readers may visit www.ruhlschurch.org or call 717-665-3400.

WHS To Stage “Hello, Dolly!” By Ann Mead Ash

As directors do with all spring musicals featuring high school casts, Deb Kline-Smith, director of Warwick High School’s upcoming musical production, looked for a show that would fit the talents of the student actors, but she was also looking for a show that would be lively. “I was looking for a fun and uplifting show,” said Kline-Smith. “It was time to do something happy and fun, and this show is a lot of fun.”

Warwick High School (WHS) will present “Hello, Dolly!” at the school, 301 W. Orange St., Lititz, on Friday and Saturday, March 15 and 16, at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, March 17, at 2 p.m. “Hello, Dolly!” centers around lovable matchmaker Dolly Levi, played by Amelia Fair. The musical follows her return to New York to practice her matchmaking and heal her own heart. Along the way, Dolly matches up Irene Molloy, played by Lauren Epps, with Cornelius Hackl, played by Caleb Goss, and Barnaby

Tucker, played by Noah Johnson, with Minnie Fay, played by Elise White. Dolly also solves the romantic problems plaguing Ermengarde, played by Maddie Grisbacher, and Ambrose Kemper, played by Taylon Madison. In the end, Dolly provides Horace Vandergelder, played by Liam Blevins, with a suitable wife as well. The cast of 45 will also feature Stella Newman as Ernestina, Katie Bender as Mrs. Rose, Andrew McCracken as Rudolph, and Matt Soslow as Stanley. “This show has no controversial

issues except love, which has been controversial since the beginning of time,” said Kline-Smith, with a chuckle, lauding her cast members as amazing. “They are excited about doing the show,” she added. “They’re very dedicated, and they will make it happen. They’re used to working hard.” Known for its big musical numbers, “Hello, Dolly!” includes “Put on Your Sunday Clothes,” “Before the Parade Passes By,” and the title song. Kline-Smith noted that “Hello Dolly!” will feature 16 young men, who will also perform barbershop music. She added that “Ribbons Down My Back” is less wellknown than the other songs, but a wonderful number just the same. Kline-Smith is assisted on the production by a number of staff members, including drama director Jill Gagliano and her assistant, Kathy Felpel. Felpel also serves as house manager with assistance from Selena Caplinger. The choreographer for the show is Travis Love, the pit orchestra co-directors are Sherry Kline and Ann Ahlers, and the costumer is Diane Fund, assisted by Beth Sahd. Set construction and design have been handled by Jeff Oberholtzer and Donald Zahn, the set painter is Michael Smith, and the scenic painter is Tony Luciano. Hair and makeup will be overseen by Sharon Walker. “Hello, Dolly!” was produced previously at WHS in the former auditorium. “We did the show 20 years ago,” recalled Kline-Smith, who added that the present theater will make a significant difference in the presentation. “The sets and drops we have our so majestic for this show,” she noted. “We couldn’t have done that in the (previous) auditorium. We are able to do more because of the space that we’re in.” Readers who wish to purchase tickets may visit www.warwicksd.org and look for the “Hello Dolly!” icon. Tickets may also be purchased by calling 717-925-0030 or emailing tickets@warwicksd.org. Any remaining tickets will be available at the door beginning one hour prior to showtime. Betancourt Earns PIAA 5th Place Medal

Photo by Bob Diller Photo by Vaughn Brown Manheim’s Will Betancourt works towards a 4-2 win over Father Judge’s Eamonn Logue during a 120-pound, opening-round bout in last week’s PIAA Class AAA Championships in Hershey’s Giant The Barons’ Cade Zeamer stacks up Bethlehem Liberty’s Travis Brown during a 132-pound, preliminary-round contest at the PIAA Class AAA Championships in Hershey last week. Center.

By Eric G. Stark

Sometimes, Manheim Central coach Billy Chamberlain said, wrestlers complete not with the hunger to win, but with the fear of losing. When the latter creeps in their minds, even for a moment, it can mean disaster for a grappler competing at the highest level. This was the case for two Manheim wrestlers March 7-9 in the Class 3A state wrestling championship at Hershey’s Giant Center. Senior Cade Zeamer and junior Will Betancourt each allowed the moment to overwhelm them, Chamberlain said. The difference, though, Betancourt, recovered and fought through the consolation bracket to earn a fifth place finish at 120 pounds. Zeamer suffered an 8-1 loss in the preliminary round to Travis Brown of Liberty at 132 pounds and lost in the consolation match 20-8 to Red Land’s Bryce Brennan. “Cade came out tight and a little nervous, Chamberlain said. “It was his first time at states and he’s a senior. That second match he wrestled against the district runner up. Zeamer has a special place in Chamberlain’s heart. Zeamer is the

first wrestler he’s coached for four straight years at Manheim Central. “He’s come a long way, Chamberlain said. “To see how he’s grown on and off the mat is impressive. He’s become tougher on and off the mat. He knows what he needs to do and what it takes to accomplish it. This was Betancourt’s third straight year in the state championships and second consecutive year earning a medal, capturing 7th place last year. Betancourt, who finished the season with a 40-5 record, earned fifth place by defeating Stroudsburg’s Cameron Enriquez 2-1 in an ultimate tie-breaker. The two were tied 1-1 after three periods. Betancourt chose the top and rode out for 30 seconds to gain a point for the match. “Will ended the year with his best match of the season, Chamberlain said. “Both guys wrestled scrappy. Neither backed down. It was good wrestling. I couldn’t be more pleased with the way his season ended. Chamberlain said he thought Betancourt was a little tight at the beginning of the tournament, not being as aggressive with his offense. But he was doing enough to win. He notched a 4-2 triumph in his opener against Eamonn Logue of Father

2019/20

Judge. Logue, who had a five-inch height advantage, forced Betancourt to wrestle smart, staying small in close, neutral situations. Betancourt scored a takedown with 27 seconds remaining in the first period and added two escapes for his final points, but he and his coach knew he’d have to wrestle better. In the quarterfinals, Betancourt suffered a 4-1 loss to Luke Lucerne of Council Rock North. Betancourt led 1-0 late in the third period when Lucerne secured a reverse and bonus points to gain the

win. Chamberlain said the quarterfinal loss woke Betancourt up. Instead of sulking, the talented junior came out more aggressive. He beat William Tennent’s TJ England 3-1 in the third round consolations. “Will’s such a competitor, but sometimes a negative thought creeps in, ‘I want to win, but I don’t want to lose.’ It creeps in and it is not a mindset you want. “When he focuses on not wanting to lose he focuses too much on his top game and relies on a few things in his

arsenal. But when he wants to win he throws everything at you. Chamberlain said Betancourt threw everything at his opponent in the fifth place match, and that has his coach looking forward to next season already. “I am extremely excited with what I saw in that fifth place match, he said. “We can work with it. Interesting enough, all of Betancourt’s five losses this year came against Pennsylvania state medalists. All five losses were to opponents who placed in the top five in the state. Betancourt has had a steady rise through the state tourney. Besides winning districts three times, he made states as a freshman, placed seventh as a sophomore and now fifth as a junior.

“He’s getting bigger and bigger wins every year, Chamberlain said about Betancourt. “He’s a competitor and he can compete with anybody. Chamberlain said states capped a great year for his squad, which will graduate a lot of wrestlers, but will bring back quality wrestlers and will benefit from a great middle school program. But the cherry on the top is having Betancourt in the wrestling room to set the tone and show all the younger wrestlers how to conduct themselves. BOWLING Brandon Henry made the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Three All-Star Team. The junior had a 194.75 average. He also had the high series in Section Three with a 736.

buddy. This year’s run will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, at Sponaugle-Williamson Field, Franklin & Marshall College, 415 Harrisburg Ave., Lancaster. “We encourage the community to join us,” said Johnson of the run, which is open to the public and offers a fairly flat course in Lancaster city. The run will start on College Avenue and turn left on West James Street and then right on North Water Street. Runners will then turn right on West Lemon Street, which becomes Buchanan Avenue. Participants will proceed right onto State Street and go right again on West James Street. The course will turn left on Race Avenue before taking a left on West Clay Street. Runners will then turn left on State Street and left again on West Frederick Street before returning to the Franklin & Marshall campus and ending on the school track. Funds raised by the event support scholarships for girls who need financial assistance to participate in the GOTR program. More than 6,000 girls have received this assistance from the Lancaster-Lebanon program. The atmosphere prior to a GOTR 5K is always unique because it includes pre-race primping for the girls, but this year, Johnson said that runners will see evidence of the 10-year celebration on T-shirts and through activities. The organization will also hold an Evening of Gratitude event on Friday, March 22, to celebrate those individuals who have contributed to the program’s success. “We just want to say thank you for making this possible,” said Johnson. Community members who wish to take part in the run may register at www.gotrlancaster.org. T-shirts will be available to those who register by Tuesday, April 23. Online registration will close on Thursday, May 16. On-site registration will be available on Friday, May 17, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Franklin & Marshall College and on the day of the event from 7 to 8:30 a.m.

90 teams will take part in the current session. But for Johnson, the impact goes beyond mere numbers. As the local organization celebrates its milestone anniversary, the staff is focused on a growth mindset that is about forging stronger bonds, not only with the girls who take part in the program, but also with their families, coaches, volunteers, donors, sponsors, and anyone involved with GOTR. “We want to deepen those relationships so that (all participants) are asking, ‘How can I be more involved? How can I be part of this mission?’” explained Johnson. GOTR of Lancaster-Lebanon has already reaped fruit from employing this mindset. In early 2019, the council was informed that the group had been chosen from more than 200 other GOTR locations as the recipient of the GOTR PaceSetters Award. The award was given in the GameChanging Relationships category based on a number of examples of ways GOTR of LancasterLebanon has built partnerships with community members and organizations. Among these are a two-year program involving nine Elizabethtown College students who have completed a service project with the program, and the production of the GOTR documentary “Run With Your Heart,” which was created in 2018. The program also worked with a local author on a book that is used to supplement the organization’s curriculum and has partnered with Penn Medicine/LG Health to showcase the GOTR participants in various presentations. The curriculum and training session culminates in the GOTR

Even though Jean’s right knee was diagnosed with bone on bone arthritis, and her left knee still had some cushion, she was not ready to have surgery. “I was looking for an alternative, Jean recalled. “I had three series of injections, but they were becoming less and less effective. Then her back went out. “I needed a cane to walk, I was in so much pain, said Jean. She soon called Dr. Tim Brennan of Brennan Chiropractic and Laser Pain Solutions in Annville. Dr. Brennan treated her back, and then began to work on her knee pain. He recommended MLS Laser Therapy to reduce

in her knees. Though lasers been in use for over 35 years, MLS Laser Therapy is a noninvasive, state-of-the-art breakthrough in restoring patient mobility, with no known side effects. In 15 minute comfortable sessions, patients suffering from a variety of musculoskeletal disorders, including degenerative joint conditions and sports injuries, are on their way to relief. Jean decided to give it a try. “I had four weeks of treatments, three times a week on both knees. I was skepti she reported. “MLS Laser Therapy is unique because it treats both

Brennan. “The MLS Laser works by sending photons of light deep into damaged tissue, which recharge and stimulate the cells. The cells of tendons, ligaments and muscles repair themselves faster and ‘kick-start’ the healing process. “I felt better and better after each treatment, remarked plan and now I can walk without a cane. I still have good days and bad days depending on the weather. But the pain is nothing like I had before the MLS Laser Therapy. I am really amazed.
