Enjoy A Free Dinner And A Movie BY CATHY MOLITORIS
You’re invited to Narnia when Ruhl’s Church hosts a free dinner and family movie night. The church, located at 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, will show “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” preceded by a pizza dinner, on Saturday, March 26. Dinner will be served from 4 to 5 p.m., and the movie will start at 5 p.m. The movie is rated PG and is recommended for people age 8 and up.
Videos for younger children will be shown in an adjacent room during the film. Make-your-own ice cream sundaes will be available, along with popcorn, and there will be a drawing for a door prize. Ruhl’s Church held its first mealand-movie night in January, said pastor Blaine Wenger. “We also did one in February, and it was very well attended,” he stated. “That got us thinking, ‘Here is a need we can try to fill. This is something we can do for the community.’” See Movie pg 3

Preserving Manheim’s Past throughout the year, such as hearth cooking demonstrations and for school or group tours. Additionally, the historical society maintains the early 20th-century town clock that stands in the mini park on the square in Manheim and hosts the Stiegel Glassworks adjacent to the railroad station property. Susan noted that the society relies on memberships and fundraisers to continue its programming and operations. “We are always looking for volunteers,” she stated. “We need to get more people involved, especially young people.” The society participates in Manheim’s First Thursdays and hosts a variety of community events throughout the year. Everything the society does is meant to further its mission of saving the past for the present. “We need to remember where we came from,” Susan said, “so that we can understand where we are today and where we are going.” For more information on the Manheim Historical Society, visit https://manheimhistoricalsociety.org or call 717-665-7989.

“Manheim is full of history. We need to remember, honor and preserve that history,” said Susan Williams. She knows what she’s talking about. As president of the Manheim Historical Society, she oversees the programming and activities that happen at the organization’s locations throughout town. Formed in 1964, the historical society maintains a facility in the 19th-century railroad station located at 210 S. Charlotte St. The building’s original freight room now serves as a meeting room for community groups and events, while the station’s ticket office and waiting rooms have been restored to their original décor. “They had separate waiting rooms for men and women,” Susan noted, pointing out the period-authentic checkers set and spittoon on the men’s side. A collection of stove plates, handcrafted by town founder Henry William Stiegel, are displayed on site, along with some of his glassworks. The station also features a model train room, complete with a layout of handmade scenes from Lancaster
to Manheim, as well as an early 20th-century trolley car. “We can operate the trolley on a track that runs for 60 yards,” Susan noted, adding that her husband, Jim, is the facilities manager for the society and is in the process of learning to drive the trolley. “We bring it out for special events and school tours.” At 88 S. Grant St., the society operates the Harry Shearer Heritage Center, featuring a museum and research library. “Anyone can come and do research,” Susan noted. “We have information on everything and anything related to Manheim.” On East High Street, the society maintains two historic properties the Fasig House and the Keath House, both constructed in the late 1700s. Both were moved to High Street from their original locations, and while the Keath House came in one move, the Fasig House relocation was a bit more complicated, Susan said. “It was taken apart, the pieces were numbered, and it was moved piece by piece,” she explained. “Then it was put together at its new location.” Both buildings are open for special events

The idea for the movie night came about after volunteer Kris Gray spoke with church members. “I had a couple of meetings with young families at church and I asked them, ‘What would you find fun? What would you like to do?’ They wanted to do a movie night,” she said. The committee added the meal to make it a complete night out for families. “All of the food we serve is kidfriendly,” Gray noted. People are invited to bring chairs or blankets and settle in for a fun night, said event volunteer Barb Dunmire. “Last time, a lot of kids brought sleeping bags and pillows and beanbag chairs,” she said. “A lot of kids showed up in pajamas, too.” Wenger emphasized that the church hopes to make the meal-and-movie night a regular event. “We’re planning on doing it on the fourth Satur-

day of the month,” he stated. “It’s something families can count on for fun and a budget-friendly option for entertainment. We’re taking care of the cost, because we want families to be able to come out and enjoy an evening together. It’s a casual, lowpressure night out.” Dunmire noted that last month’s movie night drew people from as far away as Hershey, further underscoring the need for something like this in the community. “We believe part of our mandate as a church is to serve,” she said. “We do that throughout the year, serving families with food and clothing, but it’s not just about the basics like that. Those are very important, of course, but this is a way we can connect with families emotionally and build relationships with them.” Upcoming meal-and-movie nights will be held on Saturday, April 23, and Saturday, May 28. More details on the events will be released closer to the dates. For weather-related cancellations or more information on the meal-and-movie night, visit https://ruhlschurch.org.

Barons Win First-Ever State Playoff Game
BY ERIC G. STARK
The Lady Barons earned their 20th win on the season, as Manheim Central defeated Roxborough, 64-22 on March 9 at Cardinal O’Hara High School in Springfield. This was Manheim ‘s firstever state playoff win in
school history. Central (207) last played at the state tourney in 2010. Barons’ coach Tyson Hayes said execution was the key against Roxborough, the District 12 runner-up. “We got to the rim and finished,” he said. “(We) just played a really solid team
game and now we move on the Sweet 16. ...All the credit goes to the kids. They bought into the vision and the process. So proud to see them reap the awards.” Junior Maddie Knier had a game-high 31 points, including 15 in the first quarter and 21 in the first half. Abbie
Reed added 10 points and Stella Higgins netted nine. The Barons scored 28 points in the first quarter. In the District Three Class 5A third place game, the Barons led 28-24 going into the fourth quarter against Lower Dauphin, but could not hold the team, losing 39-34 on March 4 at Doe Run Elementary. Manheim, which led by 10
points in the third quarter was paced by Knier’s gamehigh 15 points. Reed added eight points. Central led 9-8 after the first period and 1714 at halftime. The Falcons increased their defensive pressure in the fourth and got hot from the free throw line, outscoring Manheim 15-6 in the final stanza. Lower Dauphin finished 18-for-23 from the free throw line.
SWIMMING The Manheim Central boys medley and 200 free relay teams each finished 11th in the District Three Championships at Cumberland Valley High School, March 4-5. The team consisted of Bryce Garber, Anderson Pilsner, Colton Faulhaber and Ryan Moreno. They raced a 2:02.90 in the medley and 1:47.74 in the 200 free. See Sports pg 5

Sophomore Holly Hunt (134-116-143-175-162) posted a 730 and junior Hailey Kowalski (104-137-150-164114) scored a 669. Hunt finished 76th and Kowalski 97th out of 112 bowlers. “They both started slow,” Barons’ coach Alan Sides said. “Hailey had 150 third game and a 164 fourth game. But for both, it was not enough to overcome their other three games. Overall, I was pleased with their performance and resolve after the slow start.”

“Things are a little bit scaled back this year, because in the two years since we’ve had a sale, we’ve lost a lot of key help,” said Tom Walsh, chair of the mud sale committee. “It takes a lot of people to pull off an event like this.” The fire station has been holding a mud sale since 2006 and had to cancel its 2020 sale just a week and a half before the event. “2020 would have been our 15th year doing this, and we really
wanted to bring it back even if it’s on a smaller scale,” Walsh noted. Friday evening will feature two auctions, one for grocery items and one for tools. On Saturday, there will be four auctions happening at any one time, featuring crafts, quilts, trees and shrubs, antiques and collectibles, produce and tools. Everything will be sold under tents this year, Walsh said, noting that in the past the event included
items for sale in the field around the station. Auction items come from consignors who have sold at the event before, he explained. Food for sale will include a little bit of everything, Walsh said. “It’s good Amish-made food - subs, burgers, baked goods,” he stated. “You can eat here or take it to go.” Proceeds from the mud sale benefit both the fire station and the Limerock Parochial School, a local network of

Amish schools. Planning for the first mud sale began in 2005. “One of the local members of the Amish community approached us about doing a benefit sale,” Walsh said of the mud sale’s origins. “We happened to be talking about having some sort of fundraising event at the fire station at the same time, so it all worked out to do this together.” He noted that cash, checks and credit cards are accepted at the mud sale, and he encouraged everyone to come to the event. “You never know what you might find at an auction,” he stated. “You’ll see all kinds of deals and bargains. And, if you can’t find a bargain you like, there’s always a lot of good, delicious Amish-made food. There is really something here to please everyone.” Parking will be available onsite on Friday. On Saturday, no parking will be available at the fire station, but parking will be offered at several local churches, with a shuttle bus to the sale. For more information on parking and on the mud sale, visit www.penrynfire.com or search for “Penryn Fire Company, No. 1 & Limerock Parochial School Mud Sale” on Facebook.

With the average farm in Lancaster County being 77 acres, Glory Be Farm in Manheim is considered small. Duane and Tina Sauder purchased the farm, where they raise Berkshire pigs, 23 years ago. Still, it wasn’t until January 2020 that they took the crucial first steps to make their small business dreams a

reality. Just before the pandemic hit, the Sauders launched their pork snack line. Fast forward two years, and the business continues to grow. In addition to online sales, several Glory Be Farm products bearing the PA Preferred label can be purchased at locations in Manheim, Mount Joy, Lititz, Ephrata, and Elizabethtown. While selling their products is vital to the farm’s success, it’s the lifestyle that makes it meaningful for the Sauders. Like many local farmers, Duane and Tina come from multigenerational farms. The ninth generation of Tina’s family is currently working the Elizabethtown farm where she grew up. For the Sauders’ two daughters, helping out on the farm is part of their normal day. From assisting with the births of piglets to muck-
ing out the stalls, 16-year-old Riley and 13-year-old Morgan share the responsibilities of the family farm. Both girls are involved in 4-H and show pigs, beef, and goats. Passing a farm on to the next generation is often a challenge as children grow up and have interests apart from farming. “We’re blessed to be able to raise them in this lifestyle and culture. … It’s a passion and a lifestyle that you don’t clock out from,” explained Tina. A florist by trade, Tina had to cut back her hours to focus more time on the farm. When talking about launching the pork snack line just before the pandemic hit, Tina said, “People were (focusing on) getting back to their roots, shopping local. So, while the world was turning upside down, it was a good time to start the business, but we didn’t know that.” See Farming pg 11

One time my husband and I were talking about it, and my husband said, ‘Well, if that ever happens, glory be to God,’ and that’s where the name (of the farm) came from,” Tina said. When asked if she had an advice for those considering farming or achieving any goal, Tina responded, “You have to take that first step of faith, because you can’t steer a parked car very well.”

The Sauders share their farm life with followers on social media. With the popularity of farmhouse style, Tina says, many people think farming is a peaceful way of life, and they romanticize it. Using social media allows her to connect with people to share the culture and dispel myths associated with farming. “We love our livestock, and we always say that they have one bad day. …We give them the best life we can (before that day),” she noted. The Sauders’ other goal is to raise awareness. “We’re looking to bridge the gap. … Americans are at least three generations removed from the farm. … It’s our job not only to provide but to educate,” said Tina. Though Glory Be Farm may be small, Duane and Tina’s passion for farming is vast. “It’s so important for us to inspire others to go after their dreams because there were

SPECIALS FOR MARCH 16TH-22ND
H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) viruses have recently been detected in wild waterfowl in multiple states along the East Coast. These viruses are genetically similar to the H5N1 HPAI viruses that have been widely circulating throughout Asia, Europe, and Africa in recent years, causing devastating losses for poultry producers. Wild birds, especially waterfowl species, are the natural reservoir hosts for avian influenza viruses and can be infected without showing any outward signs of disease. People, clothes, footwear, vehicles, tools, and equipment can all become contaminated after exposure to wild birds or their feces and can potentially introduce avian influenza into a flock. All poultry owners, whether they have one bird or 1 million birds, should be on high alert. Poultry owners are encouraged to review their biosecurity plans. If possible, birds should be kept indoors to prevent contact with wild birds. Owners should have dedicated clothes and footwear that are only used when interacting with their flock. All tools and equipment used in and around a flock should be cleaned and disinfected. Visitors should be kept to a minimum and should be asked about their exposure to wild and domestic birds before allowing them to interact with a flock. Note that wild bird surveillance programs are only able to sample a very small subset of the total migratory waterfowl population. So, even if there has not been a detection

challenge and pain and joy that they experienced can be leveraged as a catalyst for change in others’ lives and the lives of communities. Sandoe noted that weathering more than two years of COVID-19 restrictions led organizers to conceive of the event. “We have heard that people are really tired … that their souls are exhausted,” said Sandoe. “We asked, ‘How do we get through this year feeling more connected to ourselves … to one another, and to our community?’” Sandoe said that the GOTR team believes that people are craving the opportunity to learn something new and to come away informed, inspired, and hopeful. In addition to hearing the speakers, attendees will be asked to complete an immersive exercise “where
they can share their own stories, hear from one another, and encourage one another,” Sandoe noted. “(They) can walk away with some actionable steps they can use to make a positive change in their life and for others,” Sandoe stated. “It’s a time to hear powerful stories, share their own powerful stories, and walk away with hope and inspiration to make beautiful things happen this year.” Sponsorship opportunities are available for the breakfast, but Sandoe noted that many businesses are purchasing tables so that they might bring employees as a personal development or wellness ini-
tiative. “Employees are reaching burnout, and this is a way to help,” she noted. The breakfast is a fundraiser, and there will be opportunities to give to GOTR. GOTR is a youth development program that encourages confidence, character, care, connection, competence, and contributing to community. About 50% of girls who participate are in need of scholarship funds to do so. Space is limited, and tickets are necessary to attend.
