Growing up, Randy Caldwell watched his father, Lloyd, go out of his way to help others. Inspired by his dad, Caldwell started an organization to give back to the community. Now, the Penryn man is the one who needs help. Caldwell created Lloyd’s Rides in 2016. The nonprofit organization gives rides on motorcycles, or in hot rods or other specialty vehicles to mentally challenged people and wounded warriors. Although the organization has been his focus for the past five years, Caldwell is facing

Church Will Hold Free Easter Dinner And “Drive To Calvary” elebrate Easter with a meal and drive-through event at Ruhl’s Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim. The church will offer a free takeout ham dinner and Easter celebration on Saturday, March 27, from 2 to 4 p.m. The dinner will include a ham slice, a baked potato, green beans and a dessert. Reservations are required for the meal and can be made by calling 717-665-4499 by Wednesday, March 24. “Reserved meals may be picked up outside the church, and they will be brought to your vehicle,” said Kris Gray, one of the organizers of the event. Over the past few months, the church has held several free meal distributions, including soup giveaways and a Christmas dinner.

“During these difficult times of the pandemic, we want to reach out into the community and share the love of Jesus.” “When you call to make your reservation for the ham dinner, please mention if you have children 12

After receiving the dinner, participants will exit down the church’s driveway, where various scenes depicting the final week of Jesus’ life will be displayed. “This ‘Drive to Calvary’ is an adaptation of the ‘Walk to Calvary’ we held in the church in years past,” Gray explained. Holding the event is a way for the church to give back to the community and to promote the message of Easter, she said. “During these difficult times of the pandemic, we want to reach out into the community and share the love of Jesus,” she remarked. “Easter is the most important holiday for Christians, so it is a great time to hold an event like this to feed both the body and soul.”

I want to find somebody who will take care of this organization because it’s becoming too much for me.” Caldwell, 72, said Lloyd’s Rides offers a sense of freedom and joy to participants and also lets them know they are not alone. “Lloyd’s Rides helps to build camaraderie and lets people know we care for them,” he explained. “I want to help.” Caldwell knows firsthand how it feels to ride, and he wants to pass that feeling on to others. “My dad used to take me for rides on his Harley when I was very little,” he recalled. “I’ve been riding motorcycles since I was 2 years old.”

the Lexington apartments and Lexington dining room to the current activity room just behind the reception area. “The change here is that the chapel will now be right in the heart of the home and right as you come in the main entrance,” Weiss explained. The construction will also include a porte cochere outside the reception area to provide shelter for those entering the building. “(The chapel) really gives residents and their families a space to gather as a community; to explore and feel comforted by their faith; to enjoy music, performances, and education talks,” said Weiss. The new chapel, which will seat about 125, will be used regularly for daily devotions, Sunday worship services, Bible study, and choir. Weiss credited current UZRC CEO Sue Verdegem with the vision for the project. “The fact that we had outgrown the chapel space has been discussed for at least the last couple years,” said Weiss, who referenced the need to complete

a recent renovation to the health care area of the community before beginning this project. “Leadership and the board began discussing how we could best use the space this freed up as well as address the space concerns with the chapel,” she said, noting that the chapel is phase two of a two-year project that previously enlarged dining space for personal care and residential living. The current chapel was built 50 years ago, when the organization served only about half the 170 residents it does today. The renovations will offer a larger worship space and lobby improvements to cut down on drafts and discomfort when entering and exiting, but it will not change the footprint of the building. To accumulate the $1 million necessary to complete the project, UZRC has begun a fundraising campaign called Heart of the Home. UZRC is a Life Plan Community located at 722 Furnace Hills Pike, Lititz. The home’s history dates back more than 100

years to a time when a local family began taking in area residents in need in accordance with the family’s Christian faith. That faith is still in evidence today, according to UZRC resident Betty Pesce, who said, “The chapel is a place we can connect more intimately with our God, and at this time in our lives that

connection and closeness with Christ becomes even more important.” Paul Risk Construction has been contracted to complete the project. Readers who would like to know more about the Heart of the Home campaign may visit www.uzrc .org/giving/heart or email marketing@uzrc.org.

Virtual School Programs Offered Historic Ephrata Cloister announced the release of a new series of virtual school programs designed to bring the museum into the classrooms and homes of students. These programs provide a substitute for in-person field trips to this National Historic Landmark while the site remains closed during the pandemic. The series, titled “Obed’s Classroom,” draws its name from Brother Obed, Ephrata’s first schoolteacher who offered lessons to children starting in the mid1700s. The four virtual lessons, designed for children in grades three to five, each last about 30 minutes and

explore different aspects of the community’s history. Teachers have the flexibility to schedule the lessons as a full unit in one day or as four separate virtual visits at different times. Each lesson can accommodate up to 30 students. A packet of essential questions, background information, and follow-up materials accompanies each lesson. Teachers are required to attend a brief preconference visit with the museum educator prior to the first live classroom visit to review the technology and the classroom procedures. Each of the lessons

combines live narration, photographs, object show and tell, and activities for students to do on their side of the computer screen as history comes right to their desk. One lesson looks at the place where the town of Ephrata began, examining the disciplined daily life of Ephrata’s first residents. Another lesson explores the printing of books in early Ephrata. The examination of Colonial medical practices challenges students to compare modern health care with the past, making some connections to current medical concerns. Finally, a look at the ways young people received an

education at home, as apprentices, and in more formal schools provides a brief lesson in a foreign language, math, and reading, all drawn from original sources. The four separate lessons can be viewed in any order with some elements interlaced between the different classes. The full series of lessons is available for a set fee, with a discount available for two or more classrooms in the same school. Readers may contact Michael Showalter at mishowalte@pa.gov to schedule this new virtual experience for a classroom. To learn more, readers may visit www.ephratacloister.org.

Barons Battle LD in District Quarterfinals

BY ERIC G. STARK

With Manheim Central’s size or lack of height - and playing a team like Lower Dauphin (with plenty of talent, and tall guys), Barons’ coach Charlie Fisher knew his team did not have to be perfect, but they had to be better than good.

Unfortunately, the Barons’ shots did not fall, and Manheim dropped a 59-42 decision to the Falcons in a District Three Class 5A quarterfinal game on March 4 at Lower Dauphin. The loss snapped the Barons seven game winning streak and ended their season with a 13-6 record. Four of the six losses were

by six points or less. By reaching the quarterfinals, Fisher earned his first career playoff win (he won a league game while head coach at Ephrata). The Barons started off slow against the Falcons, missing a lot of open shots, including five layups. MC trailed 16-8 after the first quarter. The second quarter was back and forth with LD getting a lot of buckets in the transition game and Manheim still missing a lot of shots. The Barons trailed 30-17 at halftime. “Believe it or not, we played well, but couldn’t hit anything, couldn’t make a shot,” Fisher said. “Part of it was nervousness, part was their (Lower Dauphin) length. They have some tall guys.” Fisher said the Falcons starting front line was 6-foot-7, 6-foot-5 and 6-foot-5. Lower Dauphin was very aggressive and took advantage of the Barons’ mistakes. The Falcons caused turnovers that led to fast break points. Sophomore Trey Grube led the Barons with 17 points, nine coming in the second half and six in the third quarter. Grube, who averaged 17 points this season, nailed three 3-pointers in the game. Junior point guard Judd Novak, who averaged seven points, seven assists and six rebounds a game, added eight points, four coming in the fourth quarter. Senior big man Wyatt Becker netted eight points, six coming in the first half. Though they could not find

any kind of rhythm, the Barons chipped away at an 18-point deficit halfway through the third quarter and cut the Falcons’ lead to 10 with four minutes remaining in the game. Looking to cut further into the lead and swing momentum, the Barons had the ball and were looking to run a set play. LD’s point guard stole the ball and went in for a layup, essentially taking the air out the Barons’ balloon. “We had the momentum shifting and then that steal came and that was that,” Fisher said. “Our guys were good. I have nothing bad to say. The game played out how we wanted. We just couldn’t make shots.” The team missed a lot of free throws as well, and many of the misses came at the worst times, Fisher said. The Barons were 2for-13 from the foul line. They missed four free throws early in the game and missed seven late during a time when they tried to sneak back into the contest. Manheim, normally shooting about 50% from the field, shot about 30% against the Falcons and about 30% from 3-point range. Despite the poor shooting, Fisher said Grube, Novak and Cam Eberly played extremely well. Fisher, who played seven players late in the season, will return three finesse guys in Grube, a do everything player and scorer; Novak, a strong point guard; and Collin Thompson, a junior shooter. Bringing

back his point guard and leading scorer and having and the junior varsity finish with a 13-4 record this year gives him good tools to work with for next season. He said he will miss Becker, Cam Eberly and Logan Shull’s strong defense. Eberly’s ability to get in the lane will be difficult to replace on offense, Fisher said. Matt Siegrist, a knock down shooter, will also be missed. MC will need to replace rebounds and defense, Fisher added. The hardest part about seeing the season end, Fisher said, was

no more time playing and practicing together. He will remember this group for the pure enjoyment they displayed on the hardwood. “I remember how awesome it was being with everyone and how good we got along,” Fisher said “ We looked forward to every practice and game and event. I am not sure if that had to do with playing during COVID-19 or just our team having awesome people. These guys truly loved hoops. It was an awesome experience.”

Charity from pg 1 He emphasized that he will assist whoever takes over for him and will offer not only his knowledge of the organization, but also his connections to the community. “I have equipment. I have a banner and a tent to put up at motorcycle rallies,” he said, noting that he recruits for his organization at events. “I have been going to local motorcycle breakfasts, and I’ll help the person who takes over to keep everything going.” Along with helping mentally challenged people and veterans, Caldwell’s organization is also focused on first responders. “A lot of first responders are veterans,” he stated. “I want to help the ones who are suffering and who are at risk for suicide.” Caldwell has a mission to combat post-traumatic stress disorder, he noted, and Lloyd’s Rides has expanded its services to offer computers for veterans who have this condition. Mary Caldwell, Randy’s wife of almost 50 years, noted that her husband has had a passion to give back since his youth, when medical problems prevented him from serving his country. “He didn’t qualify for military service, and because of that, he’s always had a desire to help people who have served and who are suffering because of their service,” she explained. “Charity has always been important to him.” For more information on Lloyd’s Rides, readers may visit www.lloydsrides.org or email Randy Caldwell at lloydsrides@gmail.com.
