with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in April 2019. The day after his diagnosis he had surgery, followed by two rounds of inpatient chemotherapy at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. His parents, Brian and Shelby Stiegauf of Lititz, said that the amount of gratitude they feel for Blake’s doctors and care team and his recovery cannot be understated. “We’re celebrating six months cancer-free,” said Shelby. Blake is a lifelong Flyers fan and his bedroom is “everything Flyers,” Shelby said. Blake has been a member of the Manheim Central Ice Hockey Club since fourth grade, and Brian has been assistant coaching since Blake was in sixth grade. Shelby said that Blake’s oncologist made it clear that he would do everything in his power to make sure that Blake recovered and was ready to play in time for hockey season in the fall. When it came time to brainstorm ideas for a Make-A-Wish request, Blake’s parents encouraged him to choose wisely. “We told him to really think about it. Make-A-Wish makes an effort to

say to kids, ‘This is the one time it’s OK to be selfish,’” Shelby shared. “I said that I kind of just want to sit down and have lunch with the Flyers and have pizza,” recalled Blake. Make-A-Wish and the Flyers took that request and ran with it. Blake, his parents, and younger brother Brent headed to Philadelphia for two full days of star treatment. “All we knew was that we were going to the practice arena, but we didn’t know any of the details,” Shelby said. After watching the Flyers practice on Feb. 27, Blake suited up in his own practice uniform in the team locker room and took to the ice for a skills practice with Giroux. “After (Blake’s) practice, he came back in the locker room, got changed, and they took him up to the press room where the general manager signed him for a 24-hour contract with the Philadelphia Flyers,” shared Shelby. Then it was time for a one-onone lunch with Giroux. “I kind of forgot the questions I had in my mind to ask him,” said Blake with a laugh. “He was asking me about

my cancer experience, and he brought up how he was talking with Oskar (Lindblom) about his cancer experience.” Lindblom, a Flyers forward, was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma in December 2019 and was out for the season for treatment. Make-A-Wish sent the Stiegaufs to Dave & Buster’s that evening and to the Franklin Institute for the day on Feb. 28 before the evening game. “We knew that Blake needed to wear a suit to the game Friday night, but that was it,” Shelby said. “We had limo transportation to the rink, where he went into the player entrance and was escorted back to a guest locker room and had a full

Flyers uniform with his name and number on a jersey.” Blake suited up, announced the starting lineup in the locker room and led the team out of the tunnel onto the ice. He then took his official solo “rookie lap” before taking a shot on goalie Carter Hart and warming up with the team. To top off the whole experience, Blake got to do a press interview with Giroux, who scored two goals in the Flyers’ win over the New York Rangers that night. “Make-A-Wish and the Flyers went so far above and beyond what we ever anticipated,” remarked Shelby. “How do you ever say thank you for something like this?”

The DeMolay members and advisers provided a coat check service, assisted the vendors, and provided trash removal. As a part of the coat check, the helpers collected donations, raising $517 for the Elizabethtown Public Library. One of the principles of the Order of DeMolay is teaching young men to be responsible and community-involved citizens, and the organization does this through a number of community service projects throughout the year. DeMolay partners with the Elizabethtown Rotary Club for its annual Christmas tree sales and the Taste of Western Lancaster County event. DeMolay has been involved with Taste of Western Lancaster County for the 12 years that the event has been held, and the total donations to the library from the coat check amounts to $4,492. Elizabethtown Chapter, Order of DeMolay, is a fraternal

organization for young men between the ages of 12 and 21. Through its varied activities, the Order of DeMolay seeks to teach the principles of good citizenship, fraternalism, and leadership. Sixteen girls from American Heritage Girls Troop PA-0412 recently participated in a weekend campout at Woodcrest Retreat in Ephrata. This was the third campout for the troop, which was founded in 2017 and meets on Monday nights at Lake View Bible Church in Manheim. At the campout, the girls hiked, made crafts, learned outdoor cooking skills, and enjoyed recreational activities at Woodcrest. The event was organized by troop leaders and girls in the Pioneer and Patriot levels. Outdoor gear used at the campout event was provided by a grant that was awarded to the troop through Cabela’s Outdoor Fund. The gear included tents, a canopy, pie irons and roasting sticks, and a variety of camp stove cooking accessories. American Heritage Girls is a Christ-centered scouting program for girls ages 5 to 18 that seeks to develop the whole child - physically, mentally, and spiritually.

organization provides everything they need except for food, which the women can usually get for themselves with SNAP or TANF benefits. If they do not have benefits, the case manager helps them to apply, and the Clare House community rallies around the client. “That’s what’s great about the Lancaster community, case manager Michelle Rybner remarked. “If we need something, we reach out to our partners. While parents are focusing on workplace development and saving for living in their own homes, Clare House staff members strive to keep life typical for the children. Birthday celebrations are routinely held for the youngsters. “We aim to be family-friendly, O’Neill said. Sometimes the parents are little more than children themselves. Clare House has been increasingly serving young people transitioning out of foster care as well as high school students. “It takes time to build rapport, said program director Dawn Allen, adding that she is thrilled when a client moves from reticence to openness. Clare House Lancaster is entirely donor-funded, making fundraisers like “The House Always Wins an important part of its budget. Volunteers are also crucial to operations, as they help with maintenance, child care, homework, and encouragement for clients. O’Neill would like to develop a mentorship program and welcomes inquiries from interested volunteers. Sponsorships and tickets are available for “The House Always Wins. Tickets must be purchased in advance. Admission will be restricted to adults age 21 and older. the hotel. The Keating Jazz Orchestra will provide music for dancing, heavy hors d’oeuvres will be served, and a cash bar will be open. Professionals will host a variety of games. “The House Always Wins is designed to be an enjoyable way for individuals and businesses to support Clare House Lancaster, whose mission is to help homeless women and children become stabilized and build healthy, empowered lives. The organization was founded by a group of Catholic nuns 40 years ago, said Maryanne O’Neill, who became the executive director on June 12, 2019, after previously heading up Mom’s House of Lancaster. Clare House no longer identifies as faith-based, but a number of religious organizations in Lancaster County provide support. Clare House provides housing for single women and their children for up to a year and offers an additional six months of after care. The two houses at 342-344 E. Chestnut St., Lancaster, can accommodate seven families with up to 20 children. “We are one of the few shelters that allow children - especially boys - under age 18 to stay with their moms, O’Neill said, adding that keeping families together reduces stress on both mothers and children. Every woman is paired with a case manager, who helps her find employment and, if needed, child care. Clients are also connected with mental health services. A weekly group therapy session was recently launched at Clare House, and the feedback from the clients was overwhelmingly positive. “About 75% of people coming into our program have experienced trauma, O’Neill reported. While women and families live at Clare House, the

Barnstormers Announce 2020 Promotional Schedule Year 16 of Lancaster Barnstormers baseball will get underway on Friday, May 8, and fans in the community can look forward to another action-packed season on the field and fun-filled season in the stands. The Barnstormers will honor the upcoming 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo on Friday, July 17. One of the team’s own - left-hander Jared Lakind - will head to the Summer Games as a member of Team Israel. The Barnstormers will wear custom Olympic-style jerseys presented by PSECU that will be auctioned off to benefit the Children’s Miracle Network. Also commemorated during the summer will be the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote, on the exact date of the anniversary, Tuesday, Aug. 18. To honor the passage of the amendment, fans will be given the chance to vote on different promotions over the course of the game. Lancaster’s professional team also wants to bring some humor into the picture, with a theme of meme, celebrating the best of internet chuckles on Friday, May 15. Then, the Labor Day weekend will kick off with Salute to Stand-up Comedy Night on Friday, Sept. 4. Plus, the Barnstormers will host Parrothead Night on Friday, July 3. The Barnstormers will play host to a number of special guests for children of all ages. There will be a Princess Day featuring Elsa and Cinderella on Sunday, June 28, and a Superhero Day on Sunday, Aug. 2. Baby Yoda will make an appearance in the form of a Baby Yoda Cylo bobblehead giveaway on Saturday, Aug. 8, presented by Penn State Health. Each of the 11 Saturdays this season, including July 4, will feature a post-game fireworks show from Bixler Pyrotechnics. Also slated on Saturdays will be Manufacturing Night on May 9; the annual Salute to Veterans on May 30; Hershey’s Chocolate World Night on June 13, with special appearances by characters and a 4D show pass giveaway to children; the Farm Show on June 27; Pink Patch Night, when local police departments join the fight against breast cancer, on July 18; Halloween in the Ballpark on Aug. 22; and a Salute to Philadelphia on Sept. 5. Irish heritage will be celebrated twice. Celtic Night will take place on Saturday, Aug. 1, and the season will end on Thursday, Sept. 17, with a Halfway to St. Patrick’s Day bash at the stadium. Other annual favorites returning to the promo schedule will include the following: a Dutch Wonderland pass giveaway for children on Saturday May 9; two Baseball in Education Days on consecutive Wednesdays, May 20 and 27; Senior Day presented by Capital Blue Cross on Wednesday, June 10; and Cylo’s Birthday celebration with Lancaster’s biggest pajama party on Sunday, June 14. The Barnstormers will have another Helicopter Candy Drop for children age 12 and under on Friday, June 26. Scout Night sleepovers will be held for the Girl Scouts on Saturday, June 13, and for the Boy Scouts on Friday, Aug. 7. Christmas in July is slated for Sunday, July 19, with Harry Potter Night on Friday, July 31. Weekly promotions will also be offered, including Military Mondays when the Barnstormers and Station House Tavern will honor the military with free tickets to all active members and veterans. The team will also wear military-style jerseys in honor of those who have and continue to serve. Other features will include Senior Discount Thursday, Fireworks Saturdays and Sunday Family Fun Day. For a complete list of promotions, readers may visit www.lancasterbarn stormers.com. Tickets for all 72 home games and weekly food promotions are currently on sale at the website.
