Expanding the vision of Mt. Hope
BY CATHY MOLITORISFor more than 55 years, Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community in Manheim, has been providing skilled nursing and rehabilitation to residents regardless of their ability to pay. Now the nonprofit will serve even more people with its “Hope Expanded … Continuing Our Vision: New Cottage Build” project.
“Our ministry and work at Mt. Hope is to serve our community by offering housing options and quality care in a wholesome Christian environment.”
The project includes the construction of two duplexes of single-floor independent living cottages, featuring four suitestyle apartments.
To highlight the new project, Mt. Hope will host two kickoff celebrations, where information will be presented about the cottages, their amenities, floor plans, estimated timelines for construction, and ways for the public to support the cause. Each event will feature a light-fare meal as well as the opportunity to learn more about partnering with Mt. Hope for the future.
People may attend a session on Sunday, April 14, at 11:30 a.m. at Grace Point Church of the Nazarene, 110 Durlach Road, Ephrata, or on Saturday, April 20, at 5 p.m. at Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim.
“One of the most exciting highlights during these two sessions and the week in between is anonymous donors pledged $20,000
as a matching gift, and donations are doubled up to $20,000,” said Kris Wilson, Mt. Hope director of advancement.
The facility began as Mt. Hope Dunkard Brethren Church Home in 1969 after the Dunkard Brethren Church purchased the Mt. Hope meetinghouse from Chiques Church in 1965 to establish a home for seniors and people
with disabilities in need of care. Mt. Hope’s original structure on Mt. Hope Home Road, the Mt. Hope Meetinghouse, was built in 1910 by the Chiques congregation as a place of worship and still stands today.
Ephrata Grace Point purchased the home from the Dunkard Brethren in 2007. Mt. Hope has 50 beds, a full-service
BY CATHY MOLITORISDo you have pride in your community? Consider making time to help with a Manheim community cleanup. People are invited to pitch in on Saturday, April 13, from 10 a.m. to noon.
“We’ll meet at the gazebo in Market Square, and we’ll work with Manheim Borough to cover as many projects as we can in the time allotted,” said Kristie Schmid, executive director for the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce. “We’ll focus on Market Square first and work out from there.”
The cleanup has been held for several years, organized by the Manheim Young Professionals. “It is now being organized by the Chamber’s Community Team, under the direction of Theresa Albright and Khalee Kreider,” Schmid shared. “We take great pride in our community and keeping it clean, and freshening it up for upcoming events is a top priority.”
She noted that there are several community events planned in and around the square in the coming months. “The largest event will be the Baron Brew Fest on Saturday, May 18, from 3 to 6 p.m.,” she said. “It’s held right in Market Square and brings a huge out-of-town crowd. This is a great opportunity for us
rehabilitation and therapy department on-site, and independent living cottages on its campus. “It has been a long-term vision for Mt. Hope to be able to build additional independent living cottages,” Wilson said. “The health care facility completed renovations and
upgrades through its 2020 capital campaign, and now is the right time to expand with new cottages.”
Mt. Hope’s mission is to welcome those with limited resources or changing financial circumstances, Wilson said, adding, “Our ministry and work at Mt.
Hope is to serve our community by offering housing options and quality care in a wholesome Christian environment.” Mt. Hope’s mission statement is from Matthew 25:40, where the importance of caring for “the least of these” teaches that everyone deserves compassion, she shared.
Jeff Sterner, Mt. Hope board member, noted that the cottage project is a costly one. “We need your help to complete this project that is estimated to cost $1.2 million,” he said. “Mt.
Hope has been good stewards of its resources and has
over $200,000 in reserve to get this project started. The project is now fully designed, with land development approvals granted by Rapho Township and completed design drawings ready for permit application. What we need now is the community’s support to raise the remaining funds to get these cottages constructed.”
Space is limited for the kickoff events, and Wilson suggests reserving seats by emailing advancement@ mthopenazarene.org or calling 717-682-8026 by Saturday, April 6.

She hopes to get a good turnout for the cleanup, noting that many hands make light work. “The more people that come out, the further reach we’ll have,” she said. “This is a great activity for families to give back together.”

Packing shifts vary on each day, and student-to-adult ratios have been assigned to groups of volunteers to ensure the safety and efficiency of the event. Tasks that may be completed sitting down will be available as needed.
Individuals who register for a shift are encouraged to make a minimum financial donation to FMSC. Each minimum donation will cover the cost of more than 200 meals, which is the average amount of food one volunteer packs during a shift. In addition to the financial donation, FMSC invites participants to bring a nonperishable food item on the day of their chosen shift.
Requested food donations include peanut butter, rice, pasta and low-sugar breakfast cereal, and FMSC will distribute all donations to the Lancaster County Food Hub in Lancaster city.
Lancaster County FMSC MobilePack chairperson
Lora Magnus Wenger first learned about the organization during a mission trip she took to Haiti in 2013. Wenger was volunteering with nonprofit organization Mission of Hope, which partnered with Haitian orphanages, schools and nonprofits to distribute FMSC meals to roughly 50,000 children per day. Upon returning to the United States, Wenger said she was inspired to research the organization, and she signed up for an

FMSC MobilePack event in New Jersey. “I was very impressed by the organization and its goals and methods,” Wenger added. “I decided that our community could do this too; I came back and talked to my church about it, and we hosted our first event the following year.”
Since the first MobilePack event at Willow Street Mennonite Church, volunteers have packed and paid for more than 2 million meals for communities around the globe. Although the goal of the event has remained the same more than a decade later, certain changes have been made over the years. Due to inflation, the cost of each meal has slightly increased, and hand-washing stations have been made available during shifts in recent years to meet government safety regulations. A few years ago, FMSC began accepting donations for the Lancaster County Food Hub to battle food insecurity in the local community in addition to efforts in other countries.
“Living in the United States, we are incredibly blessed,” Wenger said. “I think it is important for us to not only recognize how blessed we are but to be willing to share our blessings with others. It is also a good opportunity for young people down to age 5 to be involved in sharing and caring for others.”
