Look Inside
The Ride Of A Lifetime BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Even as a baby, Hunter Bristow loved trains. “We call him the train master,” said his grandma Donna Frias. In early March, Hunter got to experience the ride of a lifetime when Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley arranged for the 10-year-old from Lititz to spend the day as a train engineer with Amtrak. Hunter was born with osteochondrodysplasia, a rare hereditary bone and cartilage condition. After a surgical mistake three years ago, he was paralyzed and now uses a wheelchair to get around. Although he was eligible for his wish in 2019, he had to wait a few years due to the pandemic. When the big day finally arrived, Hunter was all smiles as he got ready to board the train at the Lancaster Amtrak station. “Ever since he’s been a little kid, we’ve been buying him toy trains and taking him on train rides,” noted Hunter’s father, Daniel Bristow. “He probably has thousands and thousands of trains at home. He’s always looking for new ones and different ones.” See Ride pg 4

hen Teen Central holds its annual banquet, people will get to see firsthand how the organization is impacting the community, said executive director Janelle Heying. The banquet will be held on Tuesday, April 26, at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and the event will run until 8:30 p.m.
W
Tickets are free for the event, which will feature a catered meal by Country Home Catering, along with donated desserts and an ice cream bar. A silent auction will also be held, offering a variety of items. “We have a lot of local things that have been donated,” Heying stated. “We have baskets, including a chocolate lovers’ basket from a local church. We have homemade cornhole boards that our students at Teen Central have been helping to decorate. We have Sight &
Sound (Theatre) tickets. Horst Arts here in Manheim donated a craft basket. … It’s a nice variety of baskets and tickets to events and activities.” After dinner, the banquet will feature an update on the Teen Central ministry. The guest speaker for the evening will be Bill Johnson, owner of Iron Nature. “He takes scrap metal and things that have been discarded and turns them into these beautiful creations,” Heying said of the Annville-based artist. “He creates
metalwork for God’s glory.” Johnson’s mission, she noted, is to teach others about Jesus through art. “He repurposes things that others have seen as trash and transforms them into a vessel for sharing God’s love,” she explained. “We are very excited that he’s going to be speaking at our banquet and sharing his testimony. What he does with his artwork very closely mirrors our mission at Teen Central of how God works and transforms to create beautiful things in all of us.” See Banquet pg 6

Hunter’s love of trains might come from his grandfather Herland Frias, who is a retired Amtrak worker. “From day one, Hunter got into trains,” Herland noted. “He’s taken train rides all over the place to Chicago, to Boston.” Cara Feldman, vice president of development for Make-A-Wish, explained that Hunter’s wish included the opportunity to punch tickets on the train and blow the train whistle as the train traveled from Lancaster to Philadelphia, where Hunter and his family, including his father; his mother, Shannon; and his 5-year-old brother, Brooks, took a train to Newark, Del. In Delaware, the family enjoyed a private tour of the Amtrak training center, including the opportunity to experience a ride simulator. For a mix of inspiration and entertainment, head to Elizabethtown College on Saturday, April 9. The CECEA benefit concert will feature performances from The Hoppers and Randy Miller. CECEA is a fundraising organization Miller created and named using the initials of his five grandchildren. The concert will be performed in Leffler Chapel at Elizabethtown College, 1 Alpha Drive, Elizabethtown. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and the concert will begin at 6:30 p.m. Proceeds from the event will benefit Pennsylvania Adult and Teen Challenge, an addiction rehabilitation treatment center. “This will be a Southern gospel concert,” said Miller, an Elizabethtown-based attorney who is also a gospel singer. “The main group, The Hoppers, are well-known in the Southern gospel field. They are often referred to as ‘America’s favorite family’ in Southern gospel music. They’ve won various awards, and they are very talented. I’ve found them to be sincere, dedicated singers.” Miller will also perform at the concert. “I’ve been singing since I was a boy, and I have recorded a number of albums and CDs,” he said. In addition to his involvement with music, Miller uses his organization, CECEA, to focus on a cause near and dear to his heart. “Some years ago, I made a commitment that I would get involved and participate in a concert that would join the fight against the opioid crisis,” Miller stated. “It’s in our communities, and it affects people in almost any community. Rather than just say, ‘Oh my. What can we do?’ I decided this would be a good way to help. I could share my music.” The concert will include a presentation from Teen Challenge, which Miller has supported for years. “I was hearing about so many families

Get Hooked On Fishing To hear Brian Cunningham tell it, there is nothing better than fishing. As the president of the Donegal Fish and Conservation Association (DFCA), he not only gets to participate in the activity he loves, but he also gets to encourage the next generation to embrace the sport. The DFCA will host its annual Kids Fishing Derby on Saturday, April 9, from
8 to 11 a.m. The event will be held at the reflecting pool on the grounds of Donegal Presbyterian Church, 1891 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy, and is open to children age 11 and under. Also welcome will be all handicapped anglers who possess a current Pennsylvania fishing license. The church will host a pancake breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. in the fellowship hall, and it will be open to derby participants and the public.
“The derby is an opportunity to get kids and families outside and interested in fishing,” Cunningham stated, adding that the event also serves to teach participants about trout management and introduce families to the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. Derby participants should bring their own equipment and clean their own fish. “We encourage the families to take what they catch up to a five-fish limit,”
The Donegal Fish and Conservation Association will host a Kids Fishing Derby.

Cunningham said. The DFCA will stock hundreds of brook, rainbow, golden and brown trout for participants to catch and take home, including three large golden trout for prizes, Cunningham stated. Winners will receive a new fishing pole and accessories, donated by Precision Fly and Tackle in Lancaster. Cunningham noted that the DFCA has been holding the derby in this location for about 20 years. “This is a great opportunity to teach young children about fishing, teach them how to catch the fish, hold the fish and respect the sport,” he remarked. “Parents and guardians can take the fish home and show the children how to clean, prepare and make a meal out of the fish. Fishing is a lifelong sport where you can go anywhere in the world and share this experience and joy with fellow fishermen.” The DFCA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring the Donegal watershed to its original state. In cooperation with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, the DFCA has raised more than 4,000 trout annually since 1964 for stocking in the Donegal Creek. Cunningham hopes people will come out to the derby to participate in a sport that’s among his favorites. “For me and a large amount of our members, getting outside along a stream and the challenge of catching some of the most beautiful species of fish in PA (is what I love),” he said. “The thrill of the hook set and landing a streambred brook trout is the top of the list.” For more information on the fishing derby, contact Cunningham at 717-413-7454. For more information on the DFCA, visit https://donegal creek.org or search for “Donegal Fish & Conservation Association” on Facebook. All participants must register with the DFCA on the day of the event. Parking will be permitted only in the Donegal Presbyterian Church parking area. No street parking will be allowed. There will be no rain date for the event.

the spring to separate it from its other big fundraiser, participation in the Extraordinary Give each November. “All of the money we raise goes directly back into our ministry,” Heying noted. “We are averaging 50 students at our programs, and we provide a full meal for them every day we are open. The proceeds go into maintaining our space, providing food, and we also offer a lot of special events. Everything we do at Teen Central is free of charge to our students. They never have to pay for anything.” Although the banquet is a fundraising opportunity, Heying said it’s about much more than that. “It’s not just about bringing in money,” she said. “It’s about bringing people together and sharing all that God is doing in our community.” For more information or to reserve tickets, email info@teencentral manheim.org, call 717-664-2990 or visit https://teencentralmanheim.org.
