“Abstract Spectrum” Will Focus On Student’s Art BY CATHY MOLITORIS

“There are a lot of children who we call ‘special needs,’ and I believe if we turn that around and begin to call that ‘special abilities,’ we can change the way we view people,” said Carol Roach. “I feel like we’re missing so many opportunities to tap into a special ability rather than a special need.” Carol knows what she’s talking about. Her son, Joseph, has autism. He also has a talent for art, and that talent will be on display throughout the month of April at Mulberry Art Studios, See Abstract pg 7

Middle School Student Is Sliding Her Way Toward The Olympics BY CATHY MOLITORIS

endall Achen has found her happy place, and it’s flying down an icy track, flat on her back on a sled. Kendall, 11, is a sixth-grade student at Manheim Central Middle School. She was recently named to the USA Luge Jr. National Develop-

K

ment Team and has big plans for her future in the sport of luge. “I want to compete in the 2030 Olympics,” said Kendall, the daughter of Stacy and Mike Achen of Manheim. Kendall became interested in the sport after watching her cousin Erin Hamlin compete. “She won the singles bronze medal at the Olympics in Sochi in 2014,” Kendall

noted. Hamlin, a four-time Olympian, became the first female American luger to medal at any winter Olympics and the first American of either gender to medal in luge singles competition. USA Luge finds its team through “slider searches” throughout the United States and then brings the top contenders to

screening camp. Kendall’s brothers, Alec and Gavin, had participated in USA Luge slider searches and screening camp, but neither progressed as far as Kendall. After competing at a slider search in Utica, N.Y., in September of 2019, Kendall was selected to attend a screening camp in Lake Placid, N.Y., in January of 2020.

The borough of Lititz, located directly north of Lancaster city, is a town still heavily influenced by the Moravian colony that once stood in its center. The community was founded in 1753 on nearly 500 acres that John George Klein, one of the area’s first residents, donated to Count Nicholas Ludwig Von Zinzendorf, a Moravian preacher. The town has carefully worked the architecture of the Moravian Church, located at 8 Church Square, into newer buildings and successfully combined the past with quaint shops and attractive dining venues. The efforts helped earn Lititz the title of “America’s Coolest Small Town” back in 2013. But “cool” is perhaps too ephemeral a term to describe Lititz. With traditional enterprises such as Wilbur Chocolate, which still operates a retail store on Broad Street; the Lititz Springs Inn and Spa, built in 1764 as the Zum

Anker; and the Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery, which is believed to be the oldest in the country, Lititz has much to offer visitors. Outdoor pursuits include a visit to Lititz Springs Park, a seven-acre plot featuring a band shell and recreation areas surrounding a picturesque stream. The park is also the location of the town welcome center, an 1884 Victorian Gothic building designed by Frank Furness, where volunteers provide information about activities and restaurants in Lititz. The Warwick-toEphrata Rail Trail offers 8 miles to walk, run, or bike from its start at Oak Street to Ephrata. Bicycle rental is available at the Warwick Township Building. At the Wolf Sanctuary of PA, located in the Speedwell Forge area of Lititz, visitors may enjoy a unique chance to see wolf pack dynamics. The restored Johannes Mueller House and the Lititz Historical Foundation Museum are generally open from the end of May through December, offering guided tours that tell the story of the Moravians and how the town was founded. The wooden portion of the Mueller house was built by Klein in 1740, making it the oldest standing private home in Lititz. It was also the location of the Lititz post office from 1830 to 1849. The historical foundation hands out free historic walking tour maps of Main Street, which take visitors to about 18 buildings. Located directly behind the foundation are the Mary Oehme Gardens. The gardens, which are free to visit and open to the public as long as no events are happening there, are a tranquil area full of bright colors against a green backdrop. Enjoying the scenery during a stroll through Lititz might cause one to work up an appetite. A few dozen restaurants, ranging from ethnic eateries to brew pubs and cafés, are sandwiched between shops. One local resident recommends Chilangos for authentic Mexican. Rooster Street Butcher features meats and pastas hosting a variety of tasty flavors, and Piccolo Eatery is known for the size of its Mediterraneanand Italian-inspired sandwiches. Tomato Pie Café is a family-owned restaurant offering an eclectic take on meals and desserts. See Lititz pg 5

Lions Club Will Host Easter Egg Hunt BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Easter is right around the corner, and that means the hunt for eggs is on in Manheim. The Manheim Lions Club will hold its annual Easter egg hunt on Saturday, April 3, beginning at 1 p.m. The event will take place at the Manheim Central football stadium. The school is located at 400 Adele Ave. Children ages 1 to 12 are invited to participate. The rain date for the event will be Saturday, April 10. The Easter egg hunt has been held by the club for more than 60 years, said club member Nancy Husser. “ We had to cancel it last year,” she said, adding that the club received approval from the Manheim Central

Your One Stop For Great Easter Flowers

School District to hold the event this year. No registration is required for the event. “People and children can just show up,” Husser noted. “We have four different areas where the eggs will be. These areas will be divided by age group. … All age group hunts begin at 1 p.m.” She is hoping the Easter Bunny will be able to attend this year’s event and said the club members are looking forward to providing families with a fun tradition. “ We are trying to bring some normalcy back into the kids’ lives,” she stated, noting that the event will still adhere to COVID guidelines. “We are encouraging everyone to wear a mask and social distance and enjoy a Manheim tradition.”

Abstract from pg 1 21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster. His show, “Abstract Spectrum,” will kick off with a reception on Friday, April 2, from 5 to 9 p.m. Joe, a student in the Manheim Central School District, will be selling his artwork at the studio to raise funds for Aaron’s Acres, a nonprofit organization that provides year-round recreational programs to children and young adults with disabilities in central Pennsylvania. Joe’s art is focused on intricate, detailed pen drawings and paintings. Now 17, he began creating art in middle school. “Joe is on the spectrum and he has ADHD, and he didn’t show much interest really in anything,” Carol recalled. Then his middle school art teacher, Julie Hibshman, encouraged him to express himself on paper. Soon Joe was bringing home his art, and his parents were impressed. “I called different art studios, and I connected with Mulberry Art Studios,” Carol remarked. “I asked, ‘Could I set a time to come in and let you look at his work and tell me if we’re just being doting parents or if you see something?’ April (Koppenhaver), who owns the studio, told me, ‘This is really beautiful. This is eye popping.’” Joe’s dad, Jack, frames Joe’s art, and both parents have helped Joe get his art to more people. He has branded his work as JJ Roach Art and has booked another show in Harrisburg.

Although Joe has never participated with Aaron’s Acres, Carol thought of the organization as a beneficiary of Joe’s show because it’s local and because she wanted to give back. Risa C. Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres, said the fundraiser will help support the nonprofit, which accepts all participants regardless of their financial ability. “We provide ... scholarships to families who face financial challenges,” Paskoff stated. “For the summer of 2019, we provided over $40,000 in scholarships. Our philosophy is that every child can participate in all of our activities horseback riding, swimming, group games, sports and crafts.”

When it comes to his artwork, Joe has found something that helps quiet his soul, Carol said. “Joe was very hyper, and now he sits down, and he looks at a piece of paper, and that hyperactivity spills out on the paper into these beautiful designs,” she noted. “How many more beautiful minds are out there that aren’t being encouraged?” She hopes Joe’s story will inspire other parents of people with special abilities to look for what makes their child unique. “It’s really about taking a holistic approach to a child with special needs,” she said. “It’s finding that one thing that ignites that spark in them, and when that happens, it’s spectacular.”

“We didn’t give it much thought after she did the screening camp. If nothing came of it, we thought, ‘Well, it was a great opportunity,’” Stacy recalled. Then on May 1, 2020, they found out Kendall had made the team. The “development” team is the lowest rung on the ladder of teams to progress to the USA Luge Olympic team, so it provides plenty of room for Kendall to grow. She travels about once a month to Lake Placid to train and said she never gets tired of sliding. “I love all of it,” Kendall noted. “I like flying down the track. I like how fast you go.” She’s working on improving her turns and avoiding crashes, which happen frequently in the sport. In fact, she had her first crash earlier this year. Luckily, it was minor. Despite the risks of the

sport, Stacy encourages her daughter to pursue her passion. “I want her to find her niche, and this is something she really loves,” she stated. Like many sports, luge is expensive, and USA Luge has set up a fundraising page, http://bit.ly/Kendall Achen, to help the family cover the cost of Kendall’s participation. “She has to purchase the team jacket, the podium hat, the helmet, the face shield, the gloves,” Stacy said, adding that travel to and from Lake Placid also adds to the cost. W hen she’s not on the track, Kendall stays busy with soccer, cheerleading and gymnastics. “I try to make sure I go to all of my gymnastic activities and keep up with my fitness so I can stay healthy,” she said. And stay focused on 2030, when Kendall just may find herself on the medal podium.
