Dancing For A Cure By Allyson Gray
On March 22, Manheim Central Middle School (MCMS) held its annual MiniTHON fundraiser. After weeks and weeks of tireless work and effort from Manheim’s seventh- and eighth-grade Student Council, everything came together for a night to fight against childhood cancer. The Student Council members decided to select a theme for Mini-THON that would reflect what the students wanted. After asking around, they concluded that the students wanted a neon, glow-in-thedark theme for 2019 Mini-THON. The Mini-THON fundraiser helped collect donations for Four Diamonds, an organization started in 1972 to help families and their children fight childhood cancer. Charles and Irma Millard lost their son Christopher to cancer, and since See MCMS Mini-THON pg 3

the Friends of Manheim Community Library present their Character Breakfast at Pleasant View Retirement Community, 544 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. Curious George will swing by this year’s event, accompanied by the Man With the Yellow Hat. “Our children’s librarian bases the choice (of special guests) on characters that she feels will appeal to the children,” said event chair Kathy Bower. Curious George is certainly such a character, known and loved for his humorous antics. Whether any of those antics will be on display during the breakfast, however, remains to be seen. “No one See Character Breakfast pg 5

MCMS Mini-THON from pg 1 then they have made it their legacy to share their son’s story. Before he passed away, Christopher created a tale about a knight who went on to discover four diamonds, which he used to fight an evil sorceress. The four diamonds symbolized four key attributes that Christopher and his family believed were necessary to overcoming cancer. Unfortunately, Christopher lost his battle shortly after creating this story. The night of Mini-THON started off with pizza and beverages, and the event quickly shifted into an all-around dance party. As the sun went down and the neon strobe lights came shining down, the party picked up. Students also had a blast in the gymnasium, where nine-square and an inflatable bouncy obstacle course put some athletes to the test. The halls were filled with activities, too. Cornhole, Spikeball, and foosball were some fun ways for students to calm down after an intense game of nine-square. For some of the more crafty partygoers, the fifth- and sixth-grade hub area was turned into a crafters’ corner where students could make origami or cards for children having a rough time with their treatments. This year’s Mini-THON guest speakers were the Linder family and Jake Kauffman, all of whom were supported by Four Diamonds throughout their experiences with cancer. Matt Linder and his family were hit with the tragic news of their daughter’s tumor just two years ago. In less than 24 hours, she was rushed into surgery to get the tumor removed from her liver. The Linders truly didn’t know what to do. That’s when they got help from Four Diamonds. They never received a bill while their daughter was recovering. Jake had been fighting a brain tumor since his late teenage years. He believes that everything Four Diamonds has done for him and other people has been a tremendous help.
Thirteen-year-old Kathryn Holsinger, a member of the seventh- and eighth-grade Student Council, helped organize the 2019 Mini-THON. “I think Mini-THON is a great cause and every school should do this,” she said. According to organizers, Mini-THON alone in the past year has raised more than $7 million for Four Diamonds. Mr. Peters, a seventh-grade history teacher, said that Mini-THON is “an awesome event that helped bring our seventh and eighth grades together.” “Dancing brought people together,” said eighth-grader Lexy Compton. The purpose of the event is to raise awareness and donations for cancer, and the students were sure to keep that in mind the entire night. Mini-THON also brought out a lot of energy from the students and staff, with people jumping and laughing and smiling all for a cause. “This event has brought out a lot of positive energy,” said James Simpkins, a seventh-grader attending Mini-THON. Mini-THON shows that little things that the students do can go a long way toward helping someone. When two grade levels work as one to achieve one goal, it makes attending the resulting event that much more worth it. The goal this year was to raise $12,000 for Four Diamonds. Not only did MCMS crush that goal, but it exceeded it by $1,000. All of that money will go toward Four Diamonds and toward finding a cure. The Mini-THON quote that was printed on the back of the bright-orange T-shirts created by Nichole Peffly and Megan Garber and worn by students the night of the event stands true: “One day we will dance in celebration. … Until then, we will dance for a cure.”
Allyson Gray is a seventh-grader at Manheim Central Middle School. She enjoys Chinese food and Fall Out Boy, and she aspires to be a dentist.

HARTZ Physical Therapy (PT), which has four locations in Lancaster County, has opened a fifth office. The new clinic, located at 755 E. Main St., Mount Joy, was slated to open on April 1, and new patients are being accepted. The Mount Joy location is currently open on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays while it builds a full caseload. It expects to increase to being open five days per week - Mondays through Fridays - starting in July. Brian Hartz, founder of HARTZ PT, was born and raised in Lancaster County. Following graduation from PT school and a few years working in the outpatient field of PT, he desired to start a physical therapy clinic that focused on providing the highest quality of patient care while giving patients excellent customer service. Still independently owned, HARTZ continues to grow through its excellent reputation in the community and vast wordof-mouth referral system. HARTZ recognizes the many options for physical therapy in Lancaster County, including large hospital- and physicianowned PT clinics as well as clinics owned by large national PT chains and investment groups. Still, HARTZ, a locally owned, independent physical therapy clinic, has continued a steady growth pattern through internal development of staff, starting from one location in Lititz and expanding to five locations. Noting that HARTZ PT has never lost a physical therapist to a competitor, Brian said, “We are very fortunate to have an outstanding staff. It’s my goal to create an environment in which my staff members enjoy coming to work each day, so they can in turn ensure our patients receive the best possible care.”
According to HARTZ representatives, independent clinics can feature lower reimbursement rates from insurance companies, which can result in savings for patients. Customer service is also a focus at HARTZ. HARTZ PT Mount Joy features a full range of physical therapy equipment as well as a warm pool for aquatic therapy. In addition, a running clinic is offered, focusing on correction and improvement of form and function. The clinic director of HARTZ PT Mount Joy is Bobby Longenecker, DPT, who has been recognized for outstanding patient satisfaction. He has been clinic director of HARTZ’s Ephrata office and is looking forward to building the business’s newest office. “Movement is such a big part of our everyday lives,” he noted. “I enjoy helping my patients improve function so they can get back to what they enjoy doing.” Longenecker enjoys treating a wide variety of diagnosed conditions. Also trained to lead the running clinic, he is currently a competitive long-distance runner and has a goal to run a marathon in each of the 50 states. Pennsylvania law requires that patients have a choice where they would like to go to physical therapy, even if their physician refers them to an in-house clinic. Additionally, through Direct Access, patients do not need a physician’s referral to come to physical therapy. Brian noted, “At HARTZ PT, we schedule new patients within 24 to 48 hours because we know there is a direct correlation
between instant access to care and a quicker, more complete recovery.” HARTZ PT has been recognized as Lancaster County’s top choice for Physical Rehabilitation for 17 years in a row in a local Reader’s Choice Awards and has also been recognized through the Reader’s Choice Awards as a leader in the treatment of sports injuries. Brian built his company on the principle that it is important to serve the community; this commitment has been carried out throughout the 19 years HARTZ PT has been in business. In fact, through the annual Fall Blast 5K fundraiser organized by the staff of HARTZ PT, more than $200,000 has been raised over the past 15 years, with 100 percent of proceeds being given to local charities. HARTZ PT Mount Joy may be reached at 717-492-8708. For more information, readers may visit www.hartzpt.com or www.facebook.com/hartzpt or find the business on Twitter using the handle @hartzpt.
Community members are invited to kick off the spring season with the Donegal High School (DHS) Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) at its fourth annual craft show. The free event will take place at DHS, 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy, on Saturday, April 6, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The show will feature more than 100 crafters selling homemade artisan products such as wooden crafts, soaps, chocolates, candles, decorations, and more. In addition, the event will offer pictures with the Easter Bunny from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., a concession stand, and giveaway drawings. Everyone who attends the event will be provided with a complimentary ticket to enter the drawings. Proceeds will go toward covering the cost of sending 17 FBLA members to the annual state competition in Hershey in April. The students studied and worked their way past the regional competition in order to compete at the state conference. FBLA is a national organization that aims to promote and develop leadership skills, prepare students for future careers, and emphasize community service projects. The Donegal FBLA Club is active during the school year, planning and carrying out community projects such as food drives and a Santa breakfast, making donations to various charities, serving breakfast to honor DHS administrative assistants, and running the annual craft show. In addition, student members compete in businessrelated events at the regional and state levels. For more information, readers may search for “@donegalfuturebusinessleaders” on Facebook or “@DonegalFBLA” on Instagram.

DFCA Plans Fishing Derby, Breakfast
Character Breakfast from pg 1 people of all ages. Bower noted that at last year’s breakfast, which featured the Berenstain Bears, children and adults alike were thrilled to pose with the special guests. “The photos with the characters were very popular,” she recalled. An assortment of craft and game stations are being planned, some of which will relate to the “Curious George” theme. Children will have the opportunity to make kites and decorate bags at the craft areas, and games will include Pin the Hat on the Man With the Yellow Hat; Fishing for Bananas, with candy also in the mix; and Catch a Balloon in a Funnel. STEM stations will offer an opportunity to do a rainbow experiment, free play with Legos, and work with “flying letters,” or paper airplanes. When it is time to enjoy a “Curious
George” story, attendees will gather by the fireplace to hear a tale read by children’s librarian Miss Colleen. The original “Curious George” stories were written by Hans Augusto Rey and Margret Rey and illustrated by Alan J. Shalleck, with the earliest one published in 1941. Since then, the curious little monkey has been getting into plenty of mischief, with his experiences chronicled in a wide variety of media. A total of 50 tickets will be sold for each breakfast seating, with separate costs set for children and for adults. Each child must be accompanied by an adult, and one adult may bring several children. Tickets must be purchased in advance by stopping by the library at 15 E. High St., Manheim, or visiting www.manheim library.org/character-breakfast. Tickets
will be available until they are sold out. Proceeds from the breakfast will benefit the library. The event will also feature an opportunity to support the library through a fundraiser featuring gift cards donated by area businesses. The breakfast is a revival of an event the Friends group had held in the past. “Last year the Friends of the Manheim Community Library decided to start up the event again,” Bower recalled. “We sold out, and the breakfast was very successful.” Bower, who served as a volunteer last year, enjoyed watching everyone take part in the various components of the event and anticipates a similar experience this year. “I loved seeing the smiles on the faces of all the children,” she said. “Everyone in attendance was having a good time celebrating reading and books.”

History. Mystery. Whimsy. Suspense. Science. Romance. Inspiration. Crafting. Cooking. The Mount Joy Church of God (MJCOG) Used Book Sale and Bake Sale will have all of this and more. Thousands of tomes will be available for perusal and purchase on Friday, April 5, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturday, April 6, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the foyer of the church, located at 30 E. Main St., Mount Joy. Book sale coordinator Joyce Hershey explained that the book sale used to be part of the church’s rummage sale, but now the event is all about books. “We want to recycle these books and get them in the hands of people,” she enthused, “and we have a wide selection of books.” Aware that book sale enthusiasts can also become hungry, volunteer Sirenda McNece will assist with the food table, where coffee and baked goods will be available for takeout. “We call it Food To Go,” she said, “and we’ll also have American, Italian, and turkey subs, while supplies last.” McNece got involved with the sale because she wanted to be more
involved with the church and she loves books. “I read so much as a girl that my parents used to ground me from reading,” she said with a laugh. Proceeds from the sale will go to Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services (ECHOS), a not-for-profit agency that provides apartment or financial services to people in the Elizabethtown, Rheems, Bainbridge, Mount Joy, Marietta, and Maytown areas who are experiencing homelessness, are at risk of homelessness, or are otherwise in need, according to the agency’s website, www.echoslancaster.org/. ECHOS was recommended to Hershey by the MJCOG church council as a worthwhile recipient of funds. Hershey, who used to sort books for the sale in her home, now sorts and prices books in the church’s basement. Dozens of boxes have already been prepared. “I check the condition of each book and put the price inside the cover. I like sorting: It’s sort of like opening up a present,” Hershey said with a smile. When considering what her favorite part of the church’s book sales has been, Hershey paused, then shared, “It’s very rewarding when someone asks for a
specific author and I can help by finding the right book.” Categories of books will include history, science, romance, inspirational, children’s, and special interest books such as cookbooks, craft books, how-to manuals, and more. In addition, there will be a special section of books such as classic Little Golden Books, volumes in Braille, vintage hymnals, and complete sets of Bible commentaries. Record albums - both 33 1/3s and 45s will also be available, as will DVDs, CDs, audio books, and VHS. When asked why people should attend the sale, Hershey replied, “The books will be very inexpensive.” McNece chimed in, “And the proceeds go to a good cause. This is a family-friendly event. Bring your kids!” Event attendees should use the Main Street entrance of the church. Parking is available in the rear of the building for those in need of handicapped-accessibility. Special discounts on books, including a price per bag, will begin on the final day of the sale at 11 a.m. For more information about the book sale, readers may contact Hershey at 717-653-8357 or the church office at 717-653-4695.

Children’s Grief Camp Announced
Cavod To Present “Anne Of Green Gables “The cool thing about live theater and ‘Anne of Green Gables’ specifically (is that) Anne comes to life again for each generation, said Cordell Huyard, creative director of Cavod Theatre. “A grandparent, a parent, a grandchild, and even a great-grandchild can come together and enjoy the show. (They can) have some laughs, shed some tears, and go home realizing how blessed they are to have their family. Huyard looks forward to seeing audiences introduced to the red-haired orphan from Prince Edward Island when “Anne of Green Gables, adapted from the 1908 book by Lucy Maud Montgomery, will be presented at the theater, 685 W. Main St., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Fridays, April 5 and 12; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, April 6 and 13; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, April 7 and 14. Ashley Gage plays Anne Shirley, an 11-year-old orphan who is accidentally sent to live with an elderly sister and brother - Marilla, played by Melissa Ticen, and Matthew Cuthbert, played by Caleb Zimmerman - at their Green Gables farm
on Prince Edward Island. Because the Cuthberts originally wanted a boy to help out around the farm, Marilla, encouraged by her friend Rachel Lynde, played by Sue Heil, at first intends to send Anne back. But she and Matthew are charmed by the talkative girl, and Anne becomes a part of their family. The foundling also carves out a niche for herself in the village, finding a best friend in Diana Barry, played by Soren Lefever, and establishing a rivalry with classmate Gilbert Blythe, played by Derrick Lambert. The play is co-directed by Monica DePaul and Alex Weaver. Huyard said that the tale of Anne coming to Green Gables resonates with the heart of Cavod, which was founded with the goal of associating the arts with the Creator, God. “We love the story of this orphan girl who is so lonely and who learns to love and be loved, said Huyard. “That’s what we’re all about (at Cavod). We are all orphans until we are accepted into the biblical family. There is that beautiful undertone of going from a broken family to becoming a whole family unit (in this story). To do justice to the production’s large
number of scenes, Cavod is installing a turntable in the theater. “The turntable will fill the entire stage, and it will have a wall in the middle, explained Huyard, who added that one side of the wall will be the Cuthberts’ kitchen, while the other side might be the small school Anne attends. “The scene changes will happen in front of the audience, said Huyard, who has engaged set designer Dave Dorman to research the regional and historical elements necessary to tell the story with accuracy. To add musical accompaniment to the show, a flautist has been retained to play during transitions and key moments. “This is one way we are making it a little different, and I think that will be a lot of fun, said Huyard. Members of the cast and crew are looking forward to presenting the children’s classic that Huyard believes will resonate with area families. “There are times when Anne or Marilla become frustrated, and we

played a solid game yet came up short in our bid for our first win,” Lefever said about the 6-2 loss. Highlighting Manheim’s offense was senior catcher Jade Trovinger with a triple down the left field line, eventually scoring. Freshman first baseman Gabby Wettig led off the fourth inning and also scored. Central bounced back to run off three straight wins to improve their record to 3-1 overall. Due to recent wet conditions, Manheim was forced to play four straight days. On Wednesday, March 27 the Barons traveled to New Holland to tangle with Garden Spot, a new Section Three contender. Lefever said it was a pitchers duel, but in the third inning junior pitcher Jordan Walter hit a solo home run to open the scoring. This score held until the end of the fifth when GS managed to plate one to tie things up. A key moment in the game was when senior centerfielder Mackenzie Martzall made a spectacular diving catch in right-center to save the tie. In the top of the eighth inning
Manheim went on the offensive. With one out, Central managed to put together four hits and plate four runs and the Barons gained a 5-1 victory. Thursday, March 28, the Barons returned home for a meeting with section-foe Elco. Two Manheim pitchers combined for a three-inning perfect game in a 15-0 triumph. Walter faced six batters in two innings and managed to pitch a perfect game fanning all six that she faced. The Barons opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first and plated 10 runs, highlighted by Trovinger, gaining her second triple on the season and a three-run home run by senior third baseman Codi Bollinger. The entire lineup produced effectively for Manheim, Lefever said. Freshman first baseman and pitcher, Wettig entered the game in the circle in the third and faced three batters and maintained the two-pitcher perfect game for Manheim. six in the fourth inning to put the game away early. Sophomore Colton Book pitched four innings, striking out six and walking one while giving up just two hits. Senior Curt Kroesen was 3-for-4 with 4 RBI’s and Senior Hunter Hess was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Mummau was 2-for-3 also at the plate. The hot bats continued Friday, March 29 when the Barons notched 12 runs on 12 hits in a 12-2 blasting of Cocalico. Hess got the win on the mound, striking out five batters and walking none. Mummau came in for relief in the sixth and closed out the game, striking out three batters. The Barons scored once in the bottom of the first, four times in the second and held a 5-2 lead after six innings before blowing things wide open with seven runs in the bottom of the seventh. Mummau led the offense with two hits and four RBIs and Garrett Bruckhart had two hits and three RBIs. TENNIS The Barons started off hot, winning its first match of the week against Garden Spot in convincing fashion, a 7-0 triumph Monday, March 25. Silas Eldeen won 6-3, 6-3 at the No.1 singles spot, but that win came after he and Andrew Rajaratnam made quick work of their doubles opponents, 8-2. Rajaratnam also won in No.2 singles, 6-1, 6-1. Hunter Winters and Jacob Bidelman got Central a second win to start the day, beating their doubles opponents in a hard-fought 8-7 (7-4) victory. Anthony Stoltzfus and Darren Bertin won in No.3 doubles, 8-3. The success in doubles carried over to singles as Winters and Bertin made quick work of their opponents, winning 6-1, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-3, respectively. Sophomore Wyatt Becker went six innings to earn his first varsity win on the mound, striking out four and walking four while scattering four hits. Drew Mummau got the save in the seventh inning, striking out two batters. Cole Lastinger led the offense with two hits on three at-bats. Manheim scored its runs on two passed balls and an RBI groundout by Mummau. Earlier in the week, Central’s bats came alive in 15-0 rout of Elco Tuesday, March 26, in a game shortened to four innings. The Barons managed 10 hits, while Manheim pitchers only yielded two hits. Central scored three runs in the top of the first, a run in the second and erupted for five runs in the third and

Lancaster-Lebanon League and District Three and state runner up. Even though they are replacing four starters, Dietrich said the expectations don’t change, especially after seeing how well his squad competed in the North Allegheny Invitational March 22 and 23. The team performed well against some tough competition, finishing with a 10-3 record; the three losses coming against two state champions - Northeastern (twice) and North Allegheny. “It builds our confidence that we can accomplish many of the same goals as last year,” Dietrich said. “We don’t have a lot of depth as we’ve enjoyed the last couple of years, so we will need to avoid injuries if we want to have a long post-season run.” Dietrich is breaking in a new setter in Jeremiah Zimmerman, who replaces Ben Burkhart, a two-time All-State selection. “He (Zimmerman) is doing a nice job of running the offense so far,” Dietrich said. “We got the setter; he just needs to progress. He watched how Ben Burkhart did things last year and we watch our post-season run. He’s put in a lot of work and his brother, Josiah, was on the team last year, so he (Jeremiah) saw first-hand the investment needed for a long post-season run.” Of course, the Barons are anchored by one of the best players not just in the league, but the state in outside hitter Mason Nissley, a Section Two First-Team MVP, District Three First-Team and two-time All-State selection. “This year we are going to talk about Mason a lot,” Dietrich said. “He is an extension of me on the court. He shares with the team his thoughts, teaches. He was a monster against Cocalico. He can do everything on the court and he knows what he needs to do for us.” Against Cocalico, a 3-0 victory on game scores of 25-19, 25-14 and 25-16, Nissley had 19 kills and five blocks at the net. Blake Wagner served two aces, Brandyn Musser collected seven kills and three digs and Jeremiah Zimmerman had 37 assists. The Barons also defeated Lebanon 3-0 (25-6, 25-8, 25-15). Wagner had three assists and 3 digs, Zimmerman notched 25 assists.

feature selections from classical ballet and from Eastern European, Indian, Middle Eastern, Filipino, and West African dance. Coordinated by Valerie Henry and committee members Marylin Beittel, Lynn Brooks, and Cynthia Burkhart, this community dance event aims to foster goodwill among diverse dancers, groups, and schools. Henry, who has performed and choreographed around the world, started dancing and teaching in the area in 2005. Looking for a way to connect with the larger dance community, she started “Celebrate Ballet and World Dance” at the behest of Harvey Owens. This year’s concert is dedicated to the memory of Pat Kautter, who passed away in August 2018. Kautter founded Hempfield’s Dance Theatre program, directing and choreographing for it for 25 years and sending her dancers on in the arts world. In addition, she served in several executive positions for the
Hempfield Education Association and helped to write national dance education standards. Groups performing in this year’s “Celebrate Ballet and World Dance” program are two groups from Encore Dance Studio, led by Melanie Burkhart and Dana Shelley; Khalesse Middle Eastern Dance, led by Cindy Burkhart; soloist Mia Vera, a Filipino dancer from Full Circle Dance Studio; students from Premiere Danse Academy, led by Amy Meehan; N’Bonye Dance and Drum ensemble, led by Janet Peck; Lancaster World Dance, led by Zita Angelo; Mahisha and Manushi Tanna, performing a fusion of Bharatanatyam and Bollywood; and Movement Laboratory’s Youth Ensemble from Lebanon. To purchase tickets, readers may visit www.artsmu.com, call 717-871-7600, or visit the box offices at the Ware Center and the Student Memorial Center, Room 103, on the Millersville University campus.
