VFW honors two history teachers
BY CATHY MOLITORIS“Every year, through the Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award, the VFW recognizes America’s best educators who instill a sense of national pride in students,” said Craig Fisher, commander of the Manheim Veterans of Foreign Wars Cyrus R. Peters Memorial Post 5956. “VFW Post 5956 wants to recognize those teachers who stimulate interest in America’s history, civic responsibility and patriotism.”
The post honored two Manheim Central School District teachers
with certificates of achievement and monetary awards at its March 18 meeting.
Dillan J. Enck, an eighth-grade history teacher at Manheim
“I am intentional about teaching the fundamental characteristics of civic virtue.”
Central Middle School, was selected for first place at the middle school level by Post 5956
and the regional district. Enck’s history curriculum spans the formative years of American history, from the colonial era through the country’s founding, up to the American Civil War. The year’s instruction culminates in a field trip to Gettysburg, which Enck plans and directs. Regarding his approach to history, he stated, “I am intentional about teaching the fundamental characteristics of civic virtue, both what it is and why it is essential in a free society.”
Tyler Shull, a social sciences teacher at Manheim Central High School, was the first-place candidate at that level for Post 5956.

Raiders of the Golden Osprey Adventure is waiting to be discovered
BY JEFF FALKIt’s good, clean family fun. It’s problem solving. It’s a local expedition.
It’s one of the most creative fundraisers you’ll ever run across.
Adam Zurn calls it Raiders of the Golden Osprey Adventure. It’s his vision, his brainchild.
“It’s a little bit like ‘National Treasure’ meets Lancaster and Lebanon counties,” said Zurn.
“I’m a child of the ‘80s and I grew up on films. I thought it would be cool to go on an adventure. As I got older, I realized I couldn’t go on adventures anymore. But I get just as much enjoyment from people going on my adventure, from playing my game.”
In association with the local history organization Uncharted Lancaster, Raiders of the Golden Osprey Adventure is a real-life treasure hunt.

Shull has developed and instructed various courses on America’s history and conflicts, including a “History of America at War” course that focuses on the causes, battles and effects of U.S. conflicts from the Civil War through the War on Terror.
Both teachers were nominated by VFW members, Fisher said, noting that post members had children who had taken classes with both of the instructors. Supporting education for America’s youths is a major tenet of the national VFW organization. The VFW and its auxiliary have developed a slate of programs dedicated to helping America’s educators. A nonprofit veterans service organization, the VFW is made up of veterans and military service members from active, guard and reserved forces.
The Manheim post, located at 149 S. Charlotte St., is open to the community for breakfast every Sunday from 8 a.m. to noon until Memorial Day weekend. VFW Post 5956 also organizes Memorial Day observances annually, with a parade beginning at 10 a.m., followed by a service, featuring a guest speaker, music by the Manheim Central High School band and honors to America’s fallen. Athletes to join state Sports Hall of Fame
The Susquehanna Valley Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame will induct six athletes during a banquet on Saturday, May 4. The event will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the Bachman Center on the campus of Homestead Village, 633 Community Way, Lancaster. This year’s inductees are Jerry Afari, William Bowers, Jeanne Ryan, Frederick Sample, Nancy Stevens, and Steve Ward.
Afari attended Columbia High School, where he earned nine varsity letters. As a football standout, he was First Team All-Section
in 2001 and 2002, and Section 3 Linebacker of the Year in 2003. He earned Third Team All-State in 2003 and finished his football career with 169 tackles, two interceptions, and three sacks.
On the wrestling mat, Afari competed for three years, compiling a record of 105-16 with 66 pins. He set a school record for takedowns in 2002 with 117. He was named Second Team All-American at NHSCA Duals, First Team All-League at 215 pounds, and Lancaster-Lebanon League and sectional champion in 2002 and
2003. Afari was the 215-lb. District 3 and regional champion and 215lb. state runner-up in 2003.
Afari was awarded a wrestling scholarship to the University of Maryland, where he was a fouryear starter and two-time team captain. He finished his collegiate career with 52 wins and a thirdplace finish at the ACC Conference Championship.
Afari was inducted into the Columbia High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.
Bowers started his running career at McCaskey High School and matriculated at Millersville State College, where he earned four letters in track and three in cross-country. He earned school records in the 440-yard dash and 440-yard hurdles. Bowers had a distinguished career in both, where he won many dual meets and won a medal at the Penn Relays for the first time in Millersville school history. In his senior year, Bowers set a school record for the 440 dash and was the PSAC champion in the 440 hurdles, also setting a school record. His Millersville team won the PSAC Championships for the first time in school history and also went 9-0 during the dual meet season.
Bowers then proceeded to coach cross-country at Hempfield High School from 1972 to 2003 and girls’ track from 1976 to 1988 and 1998 to 2004. He also coached at Millersville State College from 1972 to 1975. In boys’ cross-country, he coached three District 3 Championship teams and had two teams that finished as PIAA state runners-up.
He coached two girls’ cross-country teams to District 3 Championships. Bowers also started the girls’ cross-country program at Hempfield. He coached eight boys’ cross-country state champions and five girls’ state champions. He won the Lancaster-Lebanon League Cross-Country Coach of the Year award five times. His total dual meet record - including both track and cross-country - was 1115-1872, for an 85.7% winning percentage. He also ran in AAU meets from 1970 to 1987.
He was inducted into the Hempfield High School Sports Hall of Fame as a coach, the Millersville University Athletic Hall of Fame as an athlete, and the Lancaster County Sports Hall of Fame. He received the George W. Kirchner Award for his contributions to sports in Lancaster County.
Ryan started swimming competitively at the age of 10 and dominated Lancaster’s summer swim leagues from 1965 through 1972. She set many records as a young swimmer. In 1967, 1968, 1969, and 1970, she qualified for the National AAU Championships. In 1968, she placed second in the nation in 100-meter breaststroke and second in the 400-meter medley relay. At nationals in 1969, she placed second in the 100-meter breaststroke and third in the 400-meter medley relay. In 1970, her 400-meter freestyle relay team was ranked first in the country. Ryan won the 1970 Lancaster Aquatic Club Outstanding Swimmer award. She won the 200-meter breaststroke and
placed second in the 100-meter breaststroke at the Eastern Swim Championships in 1970. In 1971, Ryan was nationally ranked in her age group: first for 400-yard freestyle relay, 200-yard medley relay, and 200-yard freestyle relay, and second for 50-yard freestyle. In the summer of 1972, she qualified for her 10th national championship and Olympic trials.
Ryan furthered her education at West Chester State College, where in 1973, her swim team won the national championship.
Sample graduated from Columbia
High School in 1948 after earning 16 total letters in four sports. He participated in football, basketball, baseball, and track, serving as co-captain of the football team.
In 1952, Sample graduated from Lebanon Valley College, where he played football. He served as co-captain in his senior season, and his team played in the final Bully Bowl in Tennessee.
Sample then pursued a career in education, starting as a teacher and advancing to administration. He served as a high school principal

along on his grandfather’s trap line and the elder hunter continued to inspire Molls. His grandfather’s stories of the vastness of Alaska and the unique animals found there prompted Molls to pursue his passion for hunting. By age 12, he knew he wanted to be a hunting guide in Alaska, and as a teen, he served as a guide assistant.
For the past 24 years, Molls has led sportsmen from around the world to some of the most remote regions in Alaska in pursuit of Dall sheep, moose, caribou, wolves, brown bears and grizzly bears. He’s regarded as one of the most successful big-game hunting guides, and he’s spent much of his career in the remote Brooks Range in Alaska. As he honed his hunting skills, Molls also fine-tuned his faith, sharing his Christian beliefs with others.
Surprisingly, in all the hunting trips he’s led, there’s one thing he’s never done. “I’ve never shot a big game animal for myself in Alaska,” he stated, “and I really don’t have a burning desire to do it.”
Instead, Molls enjoys introducing others to the Alaskan wilderness, encouraging people to push out of their comfort zones as he has done throughout his career.
“Hunters and even non-hunters are sure to enjoy Billy’s riveting tales of airplane wrecks, grizzly
encounters and be inspired by his life-changing experiences in the Last Frontier,” said Ashley Kopp, one of the event coordinators. “At East Fairview, Molls will speak about Alaskan hunting adventures as well as his Christian testimony.
These days, Molls is a renowned public speaker and master storyteller. His presentation, including close brushes with death in Alaska, keep attendees on the edge of their seats.”
Throughout his career, Molls has written about his adventures and has produced “The Modern Day Mountain Man” DVD series. He noted that success as a hunter in Alaska requires a wide range of skills, including strength, stamina and patience. “But the most important is mental fortitude,” he said. “Enduring those cold, wet, windy days - Alaska isn’t for the faint of heart.”
Along with Molls’ presentation, the evening will include door prizes and a live auction as well as a grand-prize drawing for a $500 gift certificate to Kinsey’s Outdoors. Refreshments and a meet-and-greet with Molls will be featured after his talk.
There is no charge for the program, but space is limited, and registration is required. To register, visit https:// eastfairview.com/events.

After each group purchases a treasure diary, registered teams of three to six players decipher five weekly challenges and riddles that provide clues for unlocking segments of the treasure’s GPS coordinates. It’s a contest that challenges participants’ knowledge of local history, their physical abilities to navigate different terrain and their problem-solving skills.
Each week the clues will
be hidden in different parts of Lancaster and Lebanon counties. Prizes will be awarded to the top four teams.
“It’s the only one I know of in Lancaster County,” said Zurn. “I’ve seen little afternoon treasure hunts here and there. But no one is doing a cash prize of this size. All expenses are being paid by generous sponsors, and all sales of the treasure diaries go to nonprofits.”

Zurn is hoping that 300 teams will accept the challenge presented by Raiders of the Golden Osprey Adventure, a total that would raise almost $6,000 for the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County and LancasterHistory.
“The team that won last year was a three-generation family,” said Zurn. “Others are just friends, sometimes they’re groups from work, some are families. It’s a smattering of people. We’ve even had some people from out of state playing.
Typically, the teams that do the best are made up of three to six people who are good at brainstorming and spitballing ideas.”
Raiders of the Golden Osprey Adventure marks Zurn’s fourth treasure hunt. It was preceded by last year’s Jewel of the Susquehanna and Find My Easter Egg in 2022.
“Each year has a theme,” said Zurn. “I like to highlight
fascinating local history. It started during COVID when there was nothing to do, and it kind of just keeps growing, becoming a little better, a little more complex.”
