Make An Impact … Be A Clown! Volunteers Sought For Convoy BY ANN MEAD ASH

“Being a clown is about building relationships,” said Andrew Imhoff, whose clown name is Roland. Imhoff has been a volunteer clown with the Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy for a number of years. “I love building relationships with kids and being able to see children happy no matter what they’re going through.” See Clown pg 2

The Manheim Rock-N-Glow 5K will be preceded by a Kids’ Color Fun Run.

Rock-N-Glow Will Return To Manheim n Saturday, May 21, the streets of Manheim will be aglow when the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce hosts the eighth annual Rock-N-Glow 5K, along with a Kids’ Color Fun Run. The event will begin and end in Market Square. Registration will open at 6 p.m. The kids’ race will start at 8 p.m., and the 5K will kick off at 9 p.m. Festivities during the event will include a dance party with a DJ, food trucks, kids’ activities and a variety of glow-in-the-dark items for participants. Awards will be presented after the race. Pre-pandemic, the Rock-N-Glow drew thousands of people to the Manheim community, said Kristie Schmid, executive director of the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce. The organization was able to host a scaled-down Kids’ Color Fun Run last year, but this will be the first time the event will be held full force since 2019. “This is the Chamber’s main fundraiser each year,” Schmid explained. “While membership dues revenue certainly helps, we are a non-

“It will truly take a village to pull this off ... We cannot do it without the support of the community. Run, volunteer or sponsor if you are able.” The Rock-N-Glow gives participants the opportunity to support the Chamber while having fun outside, Schmid said. “The benefits to running either race are threefold: exercise in a fun way, support the

Manheim community and enjoy getting outside after a long two years,” she remarked. She emphasized that the event still needs community support to be successful. “It will truly take a village to pull this off,” she stated. “ We cannot do it without the support of the community. Run, volunteer or sponsor if you are able.” Sponsors of the Rock-N-Glow include PennStro Leasing, SUPPLY, Utility Keystone Trailer Sales and Blue Ridge Communications. To register for the Rock-NGlow, visit https://runsignup .com/Race/PA/Manheim/Rock NGlow5K. Participants who register by Sunday, May 1, will receive a complimentary race T-shirt. Online registrations will be accepted until the start of the race. To sign up as a volunteer for the event, visit https:// runsignup.com/Race/Volunteer/ PA/Manheim/RockNGlow5K. When people attend the annual Author Event organized by the Council of Friends of Lancaster County’s Public Libraries, they almost always have the same reaction, said Mary Ann HeltsheSteinhauer, committee member on the Council of Friends. “People leave with a smile,” she remarked. “There is so much excitement that goes on with an appearance of an author.” See Authors pg 3

clowns) when they hear ‘clowns needed,’” said Imhoff. But he said no experience is necessary to volunteer. Imhoff likes to keep his clown costume simple, choosing a hobo outfit because of the minimal makeup and uncomplicated clothing. He also feels the simplicity of his look makes him more approachable. Both Mark and Imhoff noted that they enjoy the clowning experience. “Every year, I have more fun than the year before,” said Mark. “It’s a whole new story every year,” added Imhoff. Amy emphasized that people of any age can be volunteer clowns. Whole families are welcome to clown together, and children may clown as long as a parent or other adult is with them. Amy will hold classes on Saturdays, April 9 and 23, to teach volunteers about makeup and costumes along with a little clown etiquette. Readers who are interested in volunteering to clown for Make-A-Wish may email nolt138@gmail.com for more information.

can put a smile on a kid’s face for 30 seconds, that may be the smile he needs for his whole life,” said Imhoff. About $10,000 of the funds raised by the Convoy is collected by the clowns, who grab buckets and follow the trucks in cars driven by volunteers. Amy noted that she will need one car and driver for about every four clowns who are sent out to collect. “Anybody can be a clown,” said Amy, who first began clowning as part of a college ministry. She connected with Make-A-Wish nearly 30 years ago when her husband, Mark, met up with Dennis Ober of Manheim, perhaps better known as Obie the clown. Amy soon convinced Mark to join her at the Convoy, and he chose a golfing theme for his clown outfit to go with the name Teed Off. Their first daughter clowned with them at the tender age of 9 months. Imhoff performed magic tricks and twisted balloon animals for a few years before meeting Ober at a church event. “A lot of people think about (professional

Clown organizer Amy Nolt, who goes by Harmony when she is wearing her black vest adorned with musical notes, would love to see at least 25 volunteer clowns join her when the Make-A-Wish Convoy returns to its typical format after a two-year absence. For 2022, the Convoy will be held once again at the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction, 1190 Lancaster Road, Manheim, where it will be held on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 8. The carnival will begin at 8 a.m., and the trucks will leave at 1:30 p.m. Event activities for the public will include a chicken dinner and live auction. Make-A-Wish grants the wishes of children facing lifethreatening illnesses, and the Truck Convoy provides funding for more than 75% of the wishes granted by the Philadelphia/Delaware /Susquehanna Valley Chapter every year. Make-A-Wish clowns may begin as early as 8 a.m. by taking part in the carnival. Some clowns do tricks, but others simply brighten the faces of the Make-A-Wish kids. “If you

Adriana Trigiani

Chris Bohjalian

This year, there will be double the excitement. For the first time, the Council of Friends will bring two New York Times bestselling authors to Lancaster. Adriana Trigiani and Chris Bohjalian will share the stage at the event on Tuesday, May 24, beginning at 11 a.m. The event will be held at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, and is a fundraiser to benefit public libraries in Lancaster County. “This extraordinary event is an opportunity for us to showcase two compelling storytellers,” Heltshe-Steinhauer shared. “They both have a large fan base, so we look forward to seeing the wonderful chemistry between them emerge as they share the stage while being interviewed.” Trigiani is the author of 20 books, including “The Shoemaker’s Wife.” She is also an award-winning playwright, television writer/producer and filmmaker. Among her screen credits, Trigiani wrote and directed the film adaptation of her debut novel, “Big Stone Gap.” Her latest novel, “The Good Left Undone,” tells the story of a family of Tuscan artists with long-held secrets. Bohjalian is the author of 23 books, including “Hour of the Witch,” “Midwives” and “The Flight Attendant,” which was made into an HBO Max limited series. In his newest work, “The Lioness,” a luxurious African safari turns deadly when a

group of friends journey to the Serengeti. The author event will be moderated by Scott LaMar, host of WITF’s “Smart Talk.” “We are so excited to have Scott participate,” HeltsheSteinhauer said. “He’ll have a conversation with both authors at the same time. He’s done events with us before, and he’s always a good interviewer.” Established in 2000, the Council of Friends of Lancaster County’s Public Libraries is made up of volunteers who are avid readers and are committed to promoting reading countywide. For 21 years, the group has organized and hosted author events. In 2010, the group formed a partnership with Aaron’s Books in Lititz to bring authors to Lancaster County while they travel on their national book tours. Tickets to the author event will include a copy of “The Good Left Undone” and “The Lioness.” A ticket order form may be found at https:// lancasterlibraries.org/author -events, and ticketholders must bring their ticket to the event to receive copies of the books. Tickets may be purchased by contacting Sue Newswanger at news1165@ gmail.com or visiting Aaron’s Books, 35 E. Main St., Lititz. Although the author event has included a luncheon in the past, there will not be a luncheon this year.

NEDA Walk Lancaster Scheduled NEDA Walk Lancaster will take place on Saturday, April 9, at Long’s Park, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, from 10 a.m. to noon. Registration will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. NEDA Walks are communitybuilding events where walkers raise money to fund eating disorders education, prevention, and support, as well as advocacy

and research initiatives. NEDA Walks are filled with body-positive activities, motivational guest speakers, and a short walk to symbolize unity in the fight against eating disorders. Sunny Day Camp To Shine Light On Law Enforcement BY COURTNEY MENGEL

Cadet ended, Gabriel couldn’t stop asking his sister about the program and noting how he wanted to enroll in the camp one day. However, Samantha knew that wouldn’t be possible because Gabriel has special needs and is over the age limit. As a result, she

decided to create a program so that her brother could learn about the law enforcement agencies that serve the local community. “Gabriel has an amazing personality and lights up any room when he walks into it,” said Samantha. “He has the

biggest heart and has always been my No. 1 fan in my career choice.” Founded in 2016, Sunny Day Camp is a one-day event where individuals of all ages with special needs and/or disabilities can develop friendships with first responders. Sunny Day formed on the foundation of Camp Cadet of Chester County and has since then been adopted by several Camp Cadet programs across the state, including Camp Cadet of Lancaster County. “This program also gives our troopers the opportunity to learn more about the special needs communities we serve,” commented Pennsylvania State Trooper Kelly Osborne. Lancaster Mennonite School (LM) announced that the former Mennonite Sports Organization (MSO) will get a facelift and restructure its offerings. The youth sports program operated by the school changed its name to Lancaster Mennonite Youth Athletics (LMYA). The name change is a signal to parents, students, and the community of how the program is expanding and realigning focus. While the mission remains to offer Christ-centered youth sports programs that transform student-athletes to grow in character and skill during their pre-middle school and high school years, there is now an increased emphasis on adding competitive offerings for older youths to prepare them for participating in LM’s competitive middle school and high school sports teams. Currently, LMYA has several youth sports offerings. They include soccer, field hockey, and basketball for kindergarten to sixth grade and softball and baseball for kindergarten through eighth grade. LMYA is not exclusive to Lancaster Mennonite School students. Students who attend LM and those who are part of the local community and do not attend LM are welcome to participate in the teams and can register for a sports league at www.lancaster mennonite.org/athletics/mso. Starting as early as this spring, in advance of LM’s system-wide unification, LMYA will offer travel teams for the oldest divisions of the LMYA sports available. The younger divisions will be known as the recreation league and will match their current format. Sports for older students will be in competitive travel

leagues. Details are available on the website noted in the last paragraph. This new structure’s design will match what many school districts are doing during the intermediate and middle school years for their internal studentathletes. This structure is designed to help grow LM’s student-athletes to compete at the varsity level in the future. Additional changes include having all LMYA games and practices at the LM Lancaster campus, using LM’s facilities, outdoor fields, and indoor courts. LM has two indoor gyms, multiple grass fields, and a new turf surface at its stadium that will be completed this summer.

Iron-Leg Corp Raises Funds For Children

PUBLIC REAL ESTATE AUCTION

THURSDAY, APRIL 28 6 P.M.

Lancaster County-based nonprofit Iron-Leg Corp announced that it raised $9,609 for children with disabilities at a “‘70s and ‘80s” themed dance party held on Feb 11 at The Village nightclub in Lancaster. An estimated 200 attendees gathered to raise funds through ticket sales, a silent auction and general donations. The music, costumes and decorations reflected the “‘70s and ‘80s” theme. Prizes were awarded for best male and female costume and best couple’s costumes. Funds raised through this event will go toward paying for prosthetics for local children

in need. Iron-Leg Corp was founded in 2020 and has the mission to provide funds to help cover gaps in insurance for medical bills or the costs of prosthetic limbs for children. The organization has already provided a prosthetic hand for a York County child. Co-founder and board president Matthew Millhouse cofounded the organization with his lifelong friend Sean Laukhuff, board vice president, after Millhouse’s son Parker was born missing his right leg. The group was named Iron-Leg in honor of Parker. For more information, visit www.ironleg.org.
