East Fairview Church Welcomes New Pastor BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When East Fairview Church of the Brethren members began looking for a new pastor in 2020 after their pastor of 23 years announced his retirement, they didn’t have to look far. Ryan Clift, who became the new senior pastor earlier this year, spent most of his childhood in Manheim. That was part of the appeal of the position, he said.
Manheim Central High School’s Baron Stage will present “Mary Poppins,” viewable online from Saturday, April 17, through Sunday, May 2.
Baron Stage Will Present “Mary Poppins” BY CATHY MOLITORIS
he’s practically perfect in every way, and she’s coming to the stage at Manheim Central High School. Baron Stage will present “Mary Poppins,” available for online viewing from Saturday, April 17, through Sunday, May 2. Based on the book by P.L. Travers and the Walt Disney film, “Mary Poppins” follows the story of the Banks children and their unique nanny. “It’s a really fun show, and there’s a lot of magic in it,” said Maddie Kreider, a junior who portrays the title character. “We’re experimenting with a lot of onstage magic, and that’s really helping to bring the story to life.” Kreider described the show as full of love. “It’s really a story about the love between the members of a family,” she said. “That love just needs some rekindling with the help of a nanny.” The show features a cast and crew of about 50 students, along with 18 students in the pit
“It’s a really fun show, and there’s a lot of magic in it. We’re experimenting with a lot of onstage magic, and that’s really helping to bring the story to life.” “It requires a different type of planning. There’s a lot more we can do to make it look really cool, but you can also see any flaws in our design or decorating. … I’m spending more time thinking about how the students are using their faces and how they are looking during closeups.”
Kreider added that being a performer in a recorded show requires a shift in onstage mindset. “One of the biggest differences as an actor is, we don’t have a live audience,” she said. “ We get a lot of our onstage energy from the audience, so we have to find ways to stay engaged with our audience even though they aren’t really here.” She noted that there are positives to be found with having to present a recorded show. “It’s nice because people who are not local, who are out of state even, can watch us perform and see the show, and they wouldn’t normally be able to do that,” she said. Along with Kreider, featured performers in the show are Zeke Ruffner as Bert, Eve Sheaffer as Winifred Banks, Maddie LaFrance as Jane Banks, Zoe Faulkner as Michael Banks and Paul Hurst as George Banks. Ticket cost for “Mary Poppins” is being covered by the Manheim Central School District. To order tickets, visit https://manheim centralhighschool.anywhereseat.com.

orchestra, said director Amber Friel. It is being filmed by students in the video production class, who also filmed the school’s fall production, “Robin Hood.” Performing a recorded show offers its own unique challenges, Friel noted. “It’s really a totally new ballgame from how I’d approach a traditional live performance,” she said.
“I was excited to come back to Manheim, having been raised in the community,” explained Clift, who was installed in January at the church, located at 1187 Fairview Road in Manheim. “So many people in Manheim had a hand in playing an influential role in my life, from my family to parents of friends to teachers and coaches. Being able to come back and carry on that tradition of building up the lives of the young people in our community was very appealing to me.” After graduating from Millersville University with a degree in business management, Clift worked for Signature Staffing in the Harrisburg area but also volunteered at Ephrata Church of the Brethren. While volunteering, he felt called to attend seminary, so he earned a Master of Divinity and became pastor of the Conewago Church of the Brethren in Hershey in 2019.

After competing at a slider search in Utica, N.Y., in September of 2019, Kendall was selected to attend a screening camp in Lake Placid, N.Y., in January of 2020. “We didn’t give it much thought after she did the screening camp. If nothing came of it, we thought, ‘Well, it was a great opportunity,’” Stacy recalled. Then on May 1, 2020, they found out Kendall had made the team. The “development” team is the lowest rung on the ladder of teams to progress to the USA Luge Olympic team, so it provides plenty of room for Kendall to grow. She travels about once a month to Lake Placid to train and said she never gets tired of sliding. “I love all of it,” Kendall noted. “I like flying down the track. I like how fast you go.” She’s working on improving her turns and avoiding crashes, which happen frequently in the sport. In fact, she had her first crash earlier this year. Luckily, it was minor. Despite the risks of the sport, Stacy encourages her daughter to pursue her passion. “I want her to find her niche, and this is something she really loves,” she stated. Like many sports, luge is expensive, and USA Luge has set up a fundraising page, http://bit.ly/KendallAchen, to help the family cover the cost of Kendall’s participation. “She has to purchase the team jacket, the podium hat, the helmet, the face shield, the gloves,” Stacy said, adding that travel to and from Lake Placid also adds to the cost. When she’s not on the track, Kendall stays busy with soccer, cheerleading and gymnastics. “I try to make sure I go to all of my gymnastic activities and keep up with my fitness so I can stay healthy,” she said. And stay focused on 2030, when Kendall just may find herself on the medal podium.

Kendall, 11, is a sixth-grade student at Manheim Central Middle School. She was recently named to the USA Luge Jr. National Development Team and has big plans for her future in the sport of luge. “I want to compete in the 2030 Olympics,” said Kendall, the daughter of Stacy and Mike Achen of Manheim. Kendall became interested in the sport after watching her cousin Erin Hamlin compete. “She won the singles bronze medal at the Olympics in Sochi in 2014,” Kendall noted. Hamlin, a four-time Olympian, became the first female American luger to medal at any winter Olympics and the first American of either gender to medal in luge singles competition. USA Luge finds its team through “slider searches” throughout the United States and then brings the top contenders to screening camp. Kendall’s brothers, Alec and Gavin, had participated in USA Luge slider searches and screening camp, but neither progressed as far as Kendall.

said Clift was the perfect choice for senior pastor. “Pastor Ryan has strong Christian convictions and biblical knowledge,” she stated. “He is approachable and always available to dialogue about what the Bible tells us. He is very grounded and has the initiative to work towards fulfilling the vision of the church to reach those who need Jesus.” Clift said his main goal for the church - and for himself as pastor - is to help others to know and live for Jesus. “We are trying to be a light in the community and help others,” he said. “We are just everyday people, men and women doing our best to try and live for Jesus, and we understand that we might not always get it right, but that we’re trying to do our best. We want to share the good news of Jesus with the community.” Moyer said Clift has fit right in at the church. “Even though he’s been with us for a short time, our experience so far has confirmed that he was

located at 686 Lebanon Road, Manheim. The dinner will include Peters’ Barbecue pulled pork, a baked potato, applesauce, a pickle, a homemade roll, a dessert and a beverage. Bake sale items will also be available in the school’s gym. Advance tickets for the barbecue must be reserved by Friday, April 16, said Jen Kosydar, events coordinator and auction committee member. A limited number of walk-in tickets will be available for the barbecue. A silent auction will begin at 4 p.m. on Friday and will run through noon on Saturday, Kosydar said. Students from Lead Now, a seventh- and eighth-grade student leadership group, will lead a welcome at 6 p.m. on Friday, followed by a live auction as well as presentations of class projects. “This includes the ‘Seed to Sow’ project, where each fourth-grade student is given $10 to use toward creating and selling a product to sell in the month leading up to the auction,” Kosydar explained. “Each of their products is then auctioned off that evening. (Other) items for the auction will include a children’s wooden picnic table, a handmade quilt, yard games and dessert trays, all personalized by individual classes.” On Saturday, the live auction will begin at 9 a.m. Specific items will be highlighted throughout the day, such as tools, hunting, camping and fishing items, lawn and garden equipment, general merchandise and gift certificates. Saturday will also feature children’s activities, including inflatables, a petting zoo, barrel train rides, face painting and games. Among the additional activities on Saturday will be a candy scramble and a presentation by Jesse Rothacker of Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary. Additional auction items will include outdoor furniture, John Deere equipment, Hersheypark tickets, plants and a chicken coop, Kosydar said. She emphasized that this year’s event is especially important for the school, which serves students in prekindergarten through eighth grade. “We were not able to have our auction last year, but we raised over $162,000 in 2019,” she noted. “All
proceeds go toward helping to make Christian education affordable for more families, purchasing new technology and funding essential building projects.” For more information on the event, as well as a full schedule of activities, visit www.manheimchrist ian.org or call the school office at 717-665-4300.

Located just north of town is Rock Lititz, a campus resulting from a partnership between Tait Towers and Clair Brothers Audio Enterprises. A quintessential example of a Lancaster County town, Lititz is surrounded by rolling hills and verdant farmland. While it is possible to enjoy a day visit to Lititz, the town offers a rich heritage and interesting activities that may compel visitors back to see and do more. Discovering Lititz can mean exploring and experiencing new sights, sounds, and tastes without traveling very far from your own backyard.

The borough of Lititz, located directly north of Lancaster city, is a town still heavily influenced by the Moravian colony that once stood in its center. The community was founded in 1753 on nearly 500 acres that John George Klein, one of the area’s first residents, donated to Count Nicholas Ludwig Von Zinzendorf, a Moravian preacher. The town has carefully worked the architecture of the Moravian Church, located at 8 Church Square, into newer buildings and successfully combined the past with quaint shops and attractive dining venues. The efforts helped earn Lititz the title of “America’s Coolest Small Town” back in 2013. But “cool” is perhaps too ephemeral a term to describe Lititz. With traditional enterprises such as Wilbur Chocolate, which still operates a retail store on Broad Street; the Lititz Springs Inn and Spa, built in 1764 as the Zum Anker; and the Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery, which is believed to be the oldest in the country, Lititz has much to offer visitors. Outdoor pursuits include a visit to Lititz Springs Park, a seven-acre plot featuring a band shell and recreation areas surrounding a picturesque stream. The park is also the
location of the town welcome center, an 1884 Victorian Gothic building designed by Frank Furness, where volunteers provide information about activities and restaurants in Lititz. The Warwick-to-Ephrata Rail Trail offers 8 miles to walk, run, or bike from its start at Oak Street to Ephrata. Bicycle rental is available at the Warwick Township Building. At the Wolf Sanctuary of PA, located in the Speedwell Forge area of Lititz, visitors may enjoy a unique chance to see wolf pack dynamics. The restored Johannes Mueller House and the Lititz Historical Foundation Museum are generally open from the end of May through December, offering guided tours that tell the story of the Moravians and how the town was founded. The wooden portion of the Mueller house was built by Klein in 1740, making it the oldest standing private home in Lititz. It was also the location of the Lititz post office from 1830 to 1849. The historical foundation hands out free historic walking tour maps of Main Street, which take visitors to about 18 buildings. Located directly behind the foundation are the Mary Oehme Gardens. The gardens, which are free to visit and open to the public as long as no events are happening there, are a

KIDNEY DONOR NEEDED
BY ANN MEAD ASH

The Donegal Fish and Conservation Association (DFCA) needs you. The organization is holding its membership drive to grow its base and raise funds for its projects. “If you’re enthusiastic for clean, cold-water fishing, and you want to have access to it, we’d love to have you,” said Brandon Crouser, DFCA secretary. “If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, you should consider joining us.” In a typical year, DFCA would hold two major fundraising events - its outdoor show and kids’ fishing derby. With COVID restrictions, the group could not hold either event this past year. Instead, the organization had to think up new ways to raise funds. “We set up a new website, www.donegalcreek.org, for people to make a minimum donation of $10,” Crouser noted. “Upon receiving their donation, we send out a membership pin and card as well as add them to the email list for future events like work parties, meetings and trout stocking the Donegal and Little Chiques creeks.” DFCA meetings are held the third Monday of every month, either at Amato’s Woodfire Pizza and Italian Restaurant in Mount Joy or, in warmer weather, at the East Donegal Township Chickies Creek Day Use Area.
programs due to the pandemic. Members and friends are invited to join in. Masks must be worn in the clubhouse. The organization will hold its first membership meeting of 2021 on Thursday, April 8, at 7 p.m. For further information, call 717-587-6957 or 717-951-6103. The trap shooting program will start on Wednesday, April 14. It will operate each Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. throughout April, as well as on Saturdays, April 17 and 24, from 10 a.m. to noon. This program is open to the public. For further information, call Steve at 717-917-3174. A work day will occur on Saturday, April 10, from 8 a.m. to noon. Participants are asked to bring their own rakes and shovels to the cleanup. For more details or to sign up, call 717587-6957.

Barons’ Track Teams Sweep Visiting Bears
BY ERIC G. STARK
Manheim Central came out of the blocks fast, sweeping the high hurdle and the 300 hurdle events, to capture an 87-63 victory in the girls’ meet on March 29 against Elizabethtown in Manheim. Malea Stoner finished first in the high hurdles posting a 16.2. Makenna Enck (17.4) and Abbie Reed (17.5) were second and third, respectively. In the 300 hurdles, Stoner ran a 48.2 to capture first. Elizabeth Voegele (50.3) and Enck (51.6) were second and third, respectively. On the boy side, the Barons cruised to a 120-30 triumph over E-town. The Barons swept the 1600 and 300 hurdles. Luke Redcay ran a personal-best 5:01.4 to place first and was followed by Michael Grewenwald (5:03.4) and Cam Evans (5:12.4) who scored his first varsity points. Kennedy shuffled his 4x800
girls relay lineup to keep some of his sprinters fresh for other events and the risk paid off. Cadence Getz, Grace Haldeman, Courtney Smith and Avery Bruckhart, an alternate relay team, gave a first-place effort, winning in 11:26.5. “I’m very pleased with both (wins),” Kennedy said. “We knew the girls’ meet would be close. I give a E-town credit; they have a very competitive team. I am proud of the way the girls stepped up. Even until the last second before the meet we were changing the lineup, scrambling girls in all different events that they were not expecting, and they responded well. A lot of kids were willing to step up and go into some other events and it paid off.” Maddie Knier had a big day in the field, winning the long jump (16-5.75), the triple jump (337.25), high jump (5-2) and javelin (111-7). Milian Snell (1:03.9) and

Halie Mayfield (1:07.4) went 1-2 in the 400. Sarah Forrey won the 800 (2:34.3). For the boys, Nate Reed (41.8) was first in the 300 hurdles and Landon McGalligher (42.9) was right behind him. Connor Fahnestock was third (44.3). Redcay and his brother, Luke, had a big day. The duo joined Brady Knier and Michael Greenwald to capture the 4x800 relay (10:49). Gabe Redcay (2:13.3) won the 800. Greenwald was second (2:15.9). Reed carried a big load for the Barons, winning three events. In addition to the 300 hurdles, he captured the 800 (2:13.3) and pole vault (10-6). Zach Witmer added three field wins, claiming the triple jump (38-7.5), long jump (19.5) and high jump (5-8). In the shot put, Landon Watson had a personal record with 46-8.25. Kade Kegarise won the javelin (156-2) and Tyler Fahnestock took first in the discus (142-1) and was second in the shot put (43-4.25). VOLLEYBALL The Barons started right where they left off, winning in Section Two of the LancasterLebanon League. With a 25-14, 25-10, 25-18 victory over Lebanon March 30, the section win streak now stands at 37 games. Barons coach Craig Dietrich said his quad served well and Blake Wagner paced the offense with 15 kills. He added five digs and he and Jeremiah Zimmerman each had two blocks. Zachary Moyer served two aces. Going back to 2019, prior to COVID-19, the Barons are the defending Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Two champions and the District Three champ.
They lost in state semifinals in 2019. The 2020 team had a lot of returning players, but never got a chance to defend its title because of COVID-19. The Barons haven’t lost a game in section-play (37-0), a streak that is now in its fourth season. “To be honest, it’s not been brought up a lot with all the changes,” Dietrich said about the win streak. “I am not sure a lot of people know that we are the last team to win a Class 2A District (Three) title. “We are just so thankful to be playing. We were poised to make a run last year and never got that opportunity.” BASEBALL The Barons opened the season with a 9-1 win on March 26 against Garden Spot. “It felt good for the kids to get out there and play a game that counted, after losing last season,” Barons’ coach Jason Thompson said. “I didn’t expect them to be at their best yet, nor do I want them to, but for not playing for a year, I was pleased.” Thompson has 10 seniors, but only two with varsity experience. Cam Eberly and Colton Book are back, and both are making an impact. On the mound, Book had 12 strikeouts, one walk and gave up two hits. He also hit a two-run home run. In the lead off spot, Eberly had two hits and a stolen base against the Spartans. First baseman Collin Thompson, the coach’s son, had a tworun homer. Dylan Yoder went 3for-4 with 4 RBIs in his first varsity game. Manheim improved to 2-0 with a 6-5 victory over Cocalico. The Barons scored all their runs

in the first two innings. Connor Rohrer started on the mound, striking out six, and walking three to earn the win. Wyatt Becker relieved him in the fifth and earned three strikeouts and walked one. Book hit a three-run home run in the top of the first. Jason Thompson said the key to the win was Becker coming in and closing the door in the last three innings. TENNIS Manheim has a 6-1 record this season. The lone blemish is a loss to Wilson. Andrew Rajaratnam, David Groff and Ben Ginder are the top three singles players. Barons coach Ryan Jeckel said he mixes up his doubles lineup. So far, the pairings are working. The Barons earned a 4-3 victory over Lampeter-Strasburg on March 30. MC trailed 2-1 after doubles, the lone win coming from Rajaratnam and Ginder beating Weston Weaver and Rowen Krantz, 8-3. The Barons won three singles matches to pull out the win. Rajaratnam won at No.1 singles 6-3, 6-1. Groff won 6-3, 6-1. The match came down to Ginder, who pulled out a thriller, beating Alex Vaziri, 6-3, 3-6, 10-7. The key to match victory, Jeckel said, was resilience. “We made too many unforced errors against a good team,” he said. “But we ultimately overcame our struggles. It was a nice team win. Every win stood out; we needed them all because of unforced errors.” MC Beat Garden Spot 7-0. Rajaratnam, Groff, Ginder and Tyler Snavely won in singles. Rajaratnam teamed with Luke Horst in doubles. Groff and Snavely and Ginder and Hunter Shoenfelt all won by 8-2 scores. SOFTBALL It took two years, but Janelle Haying earned her first win as coach of the Barons. Hired two years ago, Haying missed out on coaching her first season because of COVID-19. The Barons overcame a 5-2 deficit to Cocalico to earn an 11-7 victory on March 29. The Barons led 2-0 after the first inning but trailed 5-2 going into the bottom of the fourth. “The key was not letting the mistakes drag us down,” Haying said, “but rather rallying together, fiercely batting, and bouncing back. For the first game of the season, especially after not having a season last year with COVID, I’m very proud of what the team did.” Gabby Wettig earned the win, striking out five and walking one. Maddie Moyer had the winning hit, a two-run double up the middle that platted Gabby Wettig and Emma Damon, who both singled earlier and knocked in runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Barons scored five runs and batted around in the inning. Mickey Lauver led off with a single to start the rally.

Crouser added that the membership drive has a goal of $3,000. “That’s the number we’d like to get to in order to be able to stock and maintain our trout nursery, pay our electric bill and cover other expenses,” he explained. The nursery is a cooperative project with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. DFCA became a nonprofit organization last year and is working on obtaining a second trout nursery in Mount Joy. “We are also working on a major stream bank restoration project with Donegal Trout Unlimited,” Crouser stated. Membership in the club hovers around 300 people, he noted, with about 50 active members. “We’d love to see that number go up,” he remarked. “We have a lot of activities planned for the coming year.” In April, the group is planning an invasive plant removal project. “We’ll be removing multiflora roses,

Congratulations to our nurses for their continued commitment to quality care and service excellence. While we are extremely proud to receive ANCC Magnet Recognition® for nursing excellence for the fifth consecutive time, the real winners are our patients. Our team of nurses is dedicated to providing the highest level of care every day for our patients. Magnet Recognition® is the most prestigious international distinction a health system can receive for nursing excellence and quality patient outcomes. Congratulations to our nursing team for bringing home gold, again. All six of Penn Medicine’s acute-care facilities — which also includes The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Hospital, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, Chester County Hospital, and Princeton Medical Center — have achieved Magnet Recognition®.
