For the past two years, the event had been held virtually, and it went so well, organizers decided to do another virtual event this time around, Howett said. “We realized we did just as well virtually as we have with our in-person event,” she stated. “Our expenses are lower with a virtual event, and we get wider audience p a r t i c i p a t i o n .” Although the event has been successful as an exclusively online fundraiser, Howett said next year’s event may return to an in-person format to mark MCFEE’s 20th year for the auction. Money raised from the auction Manheim Central Middle School students Alexis Braun (left) and Chase Bost with the will be used by school’s facility dog, Apollo, funded by MCFEE MCFEE to fund BY CATHY MOLITORIS

programs throughout Manheim Central School District. “Proceeds go toward innovative and creative classroom grants for Manheim Central,” Howett explained. “We have funded over $1.4 million since 2001. This past year, we funded a weather station upgrade for the science department, various video conferences and virtual field trips.” Proceeds have also funded Junior Achievement programs for students in kindergarten through grade 12. Lead sponsors of the auction are Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction, Longenecker’s Hardware, Ruhl Insurance, DDMP Investment Advisors, Rohrer’s Quarry, Buch Funeral Home, Lancaster Toyota, Lancaster Nissan and Lancaster Mazda. Participation in the auction is easy, Howett said, and she encourages anyone to join in the fun. “It’s very simple to bid from anywhere on any mobile device or computer,” she stated. “It’s a lot of fun, and sometimes, people can get into friendly bidding wars. We’ll have something for everyone at the auction, and when you participate, you’ll be taking an active role in promoting innovative learning in the district.” Winning bidders may pick up their items at the Manheim Farm Show building off Adele Avenue in Manheim during the week following the auction. For more information on the auction, visit https://mcfee4kids.org. Once the auction goes live on April 21, visit www.bidpal.net/mcfee4kids to participate.

Club Aids Project Linus The Service-Learning Club at Baron Elementary School recently completed a service activity for Project Linus, a nonprofit organization that provides new, handmade blankets to children in need. The students finished the edges of 22 no-sew blankets during their weekly meetings. Judy Payne, coordinator of Lititz/Lancaster Project Linus, was on hand to accept the blankets on April 1. This project was one of many that the club spearheaded this school year. The club has been active planning Veterans Day activities, carrying out acts of kindness, helping

with collections for the Manheim Central Food Pantry, and aiding the PTO in raising funds for the school’s service dog’s supplies, grooming, and vet visits. The students made posters, wrote announcements, produced videos, counted donations, and delivered items intended to bring good cheer. When selecting ServiceLearning Club members, teachers choose students who are good citizens and are excited about making a difference. The students research topics, brainstorm ideas, and meet with the school principal The members of the Service-Learning Club present the finto present their ideas. ished blankets to Judy Payne.

On Saturday, April 23, the streets of Marietta will be full of artists in action. They’ll be taking part in a quick draw competition as part of River Towns Plein Air 2022, an art event that focuses on pieces created outdoors, or “en plein air.” “The quick draw is something we added this year,” said Marietta Art Alive! member Marita Hines. Marietta Art Alive! is the organizer of the plein air event that debuted last year. “(The quick draw is) open to anyone who is participating in the plein air competition as well as to anyone age 18 or older.” Participants may sign up for the quick draw online at www.mariettaartalive.com/qd, or they can register in person

from 8 to 10 a.m. on April 23. “The streets will be closed, and they’ll set up their easels in the street,” Hines noted. “Beginning at 10 a.m., they’ll have two hours to finish their painting.” The quick draw is just one part of River Towns Plein Air 2022, which will feature 60 artists painting in outdoor areas throughout the river towns from April 18 through Wednesday, April 27. “Last year, we had specific sites for the artists to set up and the public to come out and watch them work, but we found that the artists prefer to find their own spots or paint something that caught their eye,” Hines stated. “The quick draw will give the public a chance to see the artists at work.” On Sunday, April 24, the

event will feature a family activity spotlighting the Japanese art of gyotaku, or fish painting. “We’re partnering with the Susquehanna Waldorf School,” Hines said. “Traditionally, this art form is done with live fish, but we’ll be using rubber fish. Kids will receive a free T-shirt while supplies last, and they’ll print their fish right on the shirt.” The event will be held from noon to 3 p.m. at the school’s gym, located at Apple and Waterford avenues. The plein air event will wrap up with a three-day exhibit of the completed work, held in the rear building of Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St. It will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 29; from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 30; and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 1.

Members of the public are invited to view the art and vote for their favorite for the People’s Choice award. This year’s exhibit will feature both juried and non-juried artists, and the competition’s juror, Lou Schellenberg, will have an exhibit of his own work at MH Gallery, 42 W. Market St., Marietta, from April 30 through May 1. The plein air artwork will be for sale, and proceeds will benefit both the Marietta Community House and Rivertownes PA USA. “Come out and watch the quick draw, and come see the show,” Hines said. “This event was very well-received last year, and we’re really excited to do it again.” For more information on River Towns Plein Air 2022, visit www.mariettaartalive .com/pleinairevent.

guidelines, which tell sorters which books are right for the sale. New books that are donated may go into the library’s collection if needed. Nearly new books are sold year round on a special shelf in the library. Depending on genre, books over a certain number of years old are put on a table of free items. Items left over after a biannual sale are sent to Booksavers in Ephrata. Arnold noted that a number of certain types of items have been donated for this sale. “We have a lot of hardcover fiction, trade (paperbacks), and mass-market (paperbacks),” she said. “This year, we have a lot of Christian fiction, including Beverly Lewis, in beautiful condition.” She added that a lot of hardcover books, that are no more than 20 years old are also part of the mix. Donations are

sorted into 30 categories, including sports and recreation, animals, humor, large print, art, music, romance, history prior to 1950, and history post-1950. On the Wednesday prior to the sale, the Friends and a few local helpers, including Linden Hall students and maybe a few Boy Scouts, will begin moving boxes to the library’s community room, where they will be laid out on tables for sale. “We think we will have the muscle we need,” noted Arnold. Arnold is looking forward to the Friends becoming more active. In addition to running the book sales, the group would like to resurrect the jewelry sale fundraiser held in the past and restart offering bus trips. “ We would love more people to join the Friends now that we are active again,” Arnold said.

Kathy Arnold, a member of the Friends of the Lititz Public Library, enjoys organizing the group’s semiannual book sales. “The book sales are fun,” said Arnold. Surrounded by banana boxes filled with sorted books in the storage area the Friends share with the library, Arnold cannot contain her delight. “Actually, sorting is fun. We are like, ‘Did you see this? Look at that!’” she said. Arnold is also happy that the Friends are meeting in person again after meeting virtually to observe COVID-19 restrictions, and she is looking forward to the upcoming indoor book sale the Friends will hold at the library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz, on Friday, April 29, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturday, April 30, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Almost all books will be set at one nominal price, with a table of specialty items priced as marked. The Buck-a-Bag special will begin at noon on April 30. The Friends accept donations in wagons outside the storage area. A sign lets donors know that certain items - encyclopedias, National Geographics, videotapes, CDs, and anything mildewed are not accepted. Books, puzzles, and games fill up the wagons and are transported to the storage room for sorting by members of the Friends group. Barons Battle Donegal in 15-12 Slugfest

BY ERIC PYLES

A midseason light stretch, combined with copious amounts of rain left the softball team with just a 15-12 loss to Donegal on April 8th. Not only did the two sides combine for 27 runs the teams also tallied 25 hits between the two sides, making it a difficult day to be a pitcher. Gabby Wettig got the start for Manheim but left after four innings with a no decision by her name. She allowed five hits and eight runs to go with four walks and two strikeouts. Riley Hostetter took over and covered the final three innings and seven Donegal runs, adding two strikeouts and one walk. Wettig did her best to help her cause, driving in two runs with a triple and two singles. Mickey Lauver drove in three runs on three hits, including a two-run home run in the second. VOLLEYBALL The boys’ volleyball team suffered a rare two-game dip with the back end coming April 7th via a 3-2 loss to Elizabethtown. Central, behind 27 assists, three digs, two aces and two blocks from Dylan Musser, was able to take game one 25-23 only to see the host Bears even the match with a 25-15 game two final. The Barons appeared to take control with a 25-22 win in game three, but the Bears roared back with wins of 25-18 and

15-13 to steal the match. Josh Dipple had nine kills and four blocks while Barend Oostdam added six kills and five blocks. John Wenger finished with 14 digs. The Barons bounced back on the 12th with a 3-0 win over Ephrata. Musser posted a 26 assist, three block, three ace line to pace the 25-19, 2512 and 25-15 win. Oostdam added three blocks to his six kills while Trent Groff finished with six kills. Jacob Moyer added 10 digs to cap the win. TENNIS A rough stretch against some L-L heavyweights left the boy’s tennis team with three losses, dropping the Barons to 2-9 overall. The first of those came against Section One standout Manheim Township with the Blue Streaks sending Central home with a 7-0 loss on April 6th. Two days later the Barons were tripped up by Penn Manor with Luke Horst posting the lone Central win in a 6-1 loss. Manheim’s third loss in as many matches came on the 11th with Pequea Valley leaving Manheim with a 5-0 victory. TRACK The track teams traveled to Denver on April 12th to battle Cocalico with both teams returning home after resounding wins. The boy’s posted a 96-54 victory while the Lady Barons enjoyed a 124-25 romp.

Three different athletes claimed the max four event wins with two coming on the boy’s side. Landon McGallicher picked up three of his wins in solo events while also joining Luke Redcay, Gabe Redcay and Max Hudson in a 1600m relay win. His solo wins were in the 110H, 300H and 200m. Luke Redcay added to his 1600m relay tally by taking part in the 3200m relay win as well winning the 1600m and 800m. Gabe Redcay, Michael Greenwald and Cameron Evans took care of the remaining legs of the 3200m relay. Evans added a 400m win while Kahlen Watt claimed the 100m, the high jump and the long jump. Hudson (triple jump), Judah Bruckhart (pole vault) and Tyler Fahnestock (discus) picked up the final wins. Madison Knier rounded out the four-win club by taking the long jump, triple jump, high jump, and javelin in the girl’s meet. Malea Stoner and Sarah Forry were close behind as both finished with three wins. Both took part in the 1600m relay win along with Milan Snell and Abigail Reed while Forry posted wins in the 800m and 1600m. Stoner added her solo wins in the 100H and the 300H. Snell added to her relay victory with a 63.3 in the 400m while Rachel Nolt tacked on wins in the 100m and 200m.

The 3200m relay team of Julianna Lindberg, Reagan Ibach, Emma Herman, and Grace Haldeman finished the winning on the track with a meet opening victory. The final three wins came from Bella Sensenig (pole vault), Laci Nelson (shot put) and Chloe Enck (discus). BASEBALL The same light stretch in the schedule as the softball team and more rain than a baseball field can handle left the Barons with only a 7-0 win over Donegal on April 8th and not much else for nearly a week. Jared Murray tossed another gem, covering all seven innings with no hits or runs on his stat line. The junior added nine strikeouts to go with three walks. Central took the lead with Mason Weaver’s two-run double in the second and never looked back. Brady Harbach added his own two-run double in the sixth to cap his two-hit, Photo by Bob Diller two-RBI game. Mickey Lauver rounds third on her way to scoring a run for the See Sports pg 9

Sports from pg 8 The fields finally dried enough for the Barons to travel to Lancaster Catholic on April 13th where the Crusaders used a single first inning run to ruin what had been an undefeated start to the season for Central. The 10 setback dropped the Barons to 6-1 overall. Connor Rohrer covered all six innings and allowed just that single unearned run in the first to take the loss despite allowing just three hits with seven strikeouts. Manheim was unable to get their offense going with singles by Nolan Book, Cayde Connelly and Ky Watson counting as the only Manheim hits in the game.

Mount Hope United Christian Church, 206 Cider Press Road, Manheim, will host a vendor and crafter event on Saturday, April 23, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Proceeds will support a missionary and the church’s youth group.
