Manheim Central School District students display some of the items up for grabs at the MCFEE 4 Kids Virtual Auction.
MCFEE To Hold Virtual Auction ince 2001, the Manheim Central Foundation for Educational Enrichment (MCFEE) has awarded more than $1.4 million in teacher grants, providing students with resources such as facility dogs and 3D printers. The organization raises the bulk of its funds through its annual auction. This year, the MCFEE 4 Kids Virtual Auction will be held from Wednesday, April 28, through Saturday, May 1. “This is our 18th year doing the auction,” said Amy Howett, executive director of MCFEE. “It is our signature annual fundraiser, and until COVID, we did it in person, but it was a hybrid model, with high-end items and a live auctioneer along with items people could bid on online.” Last year, the auction switched to be wholly virtual, and Howett said organizers were pleasantly surprised by the results. “We did really, really well last year,” she stated. “Our result

We try to make it fun and have items that people will really enjoy.” at home in bed, wherever you are comfortable.” The highest bidder will win the item, and bidders will be notified if they’ve been outbid. Items will be available for curbside pickup at the Myer’s Furniture building, 936 Lancaster Road, Manheim, the week after the auction.
Larger items at the auction will include a Philadelphia package, featuring Phillies tickets and more; a family four pack to Camelback Resort; a gas smoker; a Yeti package and a children’s edition Kindle Fire tablet. “In addition to the bigger items, we have more than 100 gifts cards to local, Lancaster County businesses and restaurants,” Howett stated. “We solicited cash donations from our larger donors rather than specific items, and then we put the money toward purchasing items from these smaller local businesses. It was a way for us to give back in a small way after a year when COVID hurt a lot of small businesses.” Howett added that lead sponsors of the auction help to make it a success. “Children’s Champion sponsors of this year’s event include Buch Family of Funeral Homes, Longenecker’s Hardware Co., DDMP Investment Advisors, Lancaster Toyota Nissan, Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction, See Auction pg 4

subject for a book, so she wrote one. “Images of America: Manheim” was published in February. Downey, who currently lives outside of Baltimore, will sign copies of her book in the courtyard of REO Manheim Marketplace, 51 N. Main St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 1. The book is part of the “Images of America” series published by Arcadia Publishing that focuses on towns across the United States. “I was in a bookstore, and I saw the series, and I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if they had one for Manheim?’” Downey recalled. “There wasn’t one, so I thought, ‘I could write one.’” She submitted her proposal for the book in December of 2019, received approval to begin working on it in January of 2020 and spent about six months researching and collecting historic photographs and documents for the book.

I believe that there is much to be learned through gardening, especially when the gardener is a child. Patience, responsibility, preparedness, diligence, and caring are qualities that can be cultivated when a child actively nurtures a plant from seed to harvest. For as long as I can remember, weeding has been a part of my life. When my siblings and I were kids, we’d jump on a trailer pulled by our father’s riding mower to our halfacre garden a mile down the road. Pulling weeds was a chore that was

love of nature and gardening. Since then, three more grandchildren have brought their ideas and creativity to Gnome Village. Every April, we do our spring cleanup, where the kids pick up sticks and twigs, rake leaves, and repair the tiny structures in this otherworldly spot in our backyard. The sense of ownership they have for this 50-square-foot plot of land is remarkable. All four grandkids look forward to helping out in my garden, too. Mulching, staking tomatoes in large planters, and planting new flowers are among the tasks they enjoy. I always add a few new annuals in the spring to infuse more color until the summer perennial blooms arrive. A trip to the local garden center to allow the kids to help choose the annuals is always fun.
Entries must be received by end of day Wednesday, May 5 to be entered in the contest. Additional rules and regulations may apply.

only made bearable by the occasional ripe tomato, pepper, or bean that I ate fresh from the stalk. These days, other than some herbs and tomatoes, the garden in my tiny backyard is filled with pollinatorfriendly plants. When my first grandchild was just a toddler, I decided to set aside a corner of my yard as a special place where he could explore and play, all while learning about taking care of a garden. Little by little, a gnome village took root. Under the maple tree, we planted shade-loving ferns, hosta, and black-eyed Susan. We grew goldenstar, bugleweed, and creeping phlox, all forms of ground cover that could withstand the trample of little feet. Together we created a magical world that set the foundation for a

Gardeners from pg 2 The most rewarding part of the entire cycle of growth is when the garden is in full bloom and the kids create a pretty bouquet to give to someone special or when they pick a tomato off the vine and enjoy the burst of flavor that they helped create. Last summer we made a delicious Margherita pizza with fresh basil and tomatoes from the garden. My youngest grandchildren are 6year-old twins. I may have a couple more years before Gnome Village no longer holds their imagination, but the seeds sown in the tiny plot of ground under the maple tree are likely to grow in ways never imagined.

history of the town and host the book signing. “April will have maps with corresponding page numbers for people to take and perhaps stroll around town to see the actual buildings from her book,” Reiley remarked. That was what really drew April into the project, she says - the fact that so many historic sites remain in Manheim. “I love seeing the old photographs and knowing you can still see those buildings today,” she said. “I love being able to walk through town and feeling the town’s history. I can picture the horses and carriages going down the street.” Proceeds from sales of Downey’s book at the book signing will benefit the Manheim Historical Society. “The book has about 220 photographs, and almost all of them are from the Manheim Historical Society,” Downey said, adding that a few were donated by individuals and she shot a few herself. “The book begins with a general history of Pennsylvania, talking about William Penn and then about Baron Stiegel, the founder of Manheim,” she stated. “Each chapter has an introduction to the time period covered in it.” Downey, who is in the process of switching careers, is looking to get into historical research, especially after discovering how enjoyable it was to write this book. “I find our past really interesting,” she noted. “I have always loved history. I knew this book would be a cool idea, but once I got to the historical society, I started thinking, ‘This is a really, really good idea.’ There is just so much history in Manheim. There are so many old buildings, so many records and photographs from the past.” Once the book was published, Downey connected with Suzanne Reiley, who owns REO Manheim Marketplace and is also president of the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce. Reiley said she was happy to help Downey promote the

peted against a strong team,” Barons’ coach Ryan Jeckel said. “Andrew (Rajaratnam) and Tyler (Snavely) played well on Court One doubles, but were up against too much firepower. Ben Ginder and Andrew Donmoyer played great on Court Three doubles for the win. And Ben Ginder played smart tennis to win Court Four.” SOFTBALL The Lady Barons suffered their first two loses on the season. Northern Lebanon posted a 10-2 victory on the Barons on April 9. Gabby Wettig pitched six innings and had six strikeouts, while walking five batters. Marianda Ober pitched the seventh and struck out one. The Barons scored first in the game, but the Vikings posted three runs in the second and combined for seven runs in between the fourth through six innings to pull away. MC looked to bounce back against Donegal, scoring four runs early, but the Indians shut down the Barons’ offense, handing Central an 8-4 loss last Monday. Donegal scored one run in the first, but three in the third to tie the game. They posted the winning run in the fourth inning and then tacked on some insurance. Emma Damon went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and sophomore Brynn Lehman was 1-for-2 with one RBI. Wettig had one strike out and one walk for the Barons. “We came out strong, four in the first,” Barons assistant coach John VanBlargan said, “and then the bats went dead.” VOLLEYBALL The Barons lost 3-1 to York Suburban Wednesday, April 14 in Manheim. It was Central’s first loss this season, dropping the Barons record to 3-1. After losing the first game 25-15, MC bounced back to take game two 25-19.
They were down 9-1 in the third game and put up a good fight before losing 25-17. The fourth game was nip and tuck. Central led 18-15 and it looked like the Barons could force a fifth and final game, but three straight unforced errors turned the tide. They missed a serve and then hit two balls out of bounds. Barons’ coach Craig Dietrich took a timeout with this team trailing 21-19, but he could not stop the momentum and Suburban pulled away for the win, 25-19. Manheim beat York Suburban during a weekend tournament, but Suburban seemed more focused and played stronger defense in this second meeting, Deitrich said. Blake Wagner led the team in kills, Jeremiah Zimmerman paced the squad in blocks and Barend Oostdam was good in the middle, but overall, Dietrich said his squad was not as focused as he’d like to see. “I just stressed being consistent,” he said. “We feel like we are making strides. I’m not disappointed. We are not where I want to be, but we keep moving forward. We need a third producer. Between Logan Groff, Trent Groff and Jacob Moyer we need someone to step up.” The Barons competed very well in
the Northeastern Tournament in York County on April 10, finishing third in their pool behind Conestoga Valley and Hempfield. MC also split with traditional powers Dallastown (lost) and York Suburban (won). Manheim lost to Warwick in the play-in round. The Northeastern tourney was a good way for the Barons’ young team to gain more experience and the strong showing should help Manheim later this season. “I am very pleased,” Dietrich said. “It’s vital for all of our guys to get the extra touches, especially being young and inexperienced at this level.”

cay, and Greenwalt won the 4x800. Nate Reed was first in the 300 hurdles and the high hurdles went to Landon McGallicher, who edged out Reed 15.8 to 15.9. Josh Moore won the 400 and teamed with Reed, Nicholas Bair and Logan Burkholder to take the 4x400. In the field events, Zach Witmer and Kade Kegarise were multiple winners. Witmer was first in the triple and high jumps and Kegarise the pole vault and javelin. Landon Watson and Tyler Fahnestock flipped between first and second in the shot and discus, with Watson taking the shot put and Fahnestock the discus. The Lady Barons defeated Cocalico 92-58. Malea Stoner, a junior, won the high hurdles and 300 hurdles. Sarah Forry, a freshman, captured the 800m and 1600m. Forry was also part of the winning 4x800 relay with Halie Mayfield, Jenna Miller and Elizabeth Voegele. Julianna Linburg was first in the 3200. In the field events, Madison Knier, a sophomore, won the long, triple and high jumps as well as the javelin. Freshman Bella Sensenig gained first in the pole vault and junior Summer Bates took the discus. TENNIS Manheim Central beat Red Lion 43 on Saturday, April 10 in Manheim. In doubles, David Graff and Tyler Snavely won 8-3 and Hunter Shoenfelt and Andrew Donmoyer cruised, 8-2. In singles, Snavely posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory and Ben Ginder won 6-4, 6-1. The Barons lost to Penn Manor 5-2 last Monday. Ginder had a big day, winning in singles 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 and in doubles with Donmoyer, 8-2. Penn Manor’s top three helped win five of the seven points available. “We’re happy with how we com-

The Manheim Central baseball team remained undefeated at 6-0, after getting another solid pitching and hitting performance early in the season. The Barons beat Donegal 10-2 Tuesday April 6. Connor Rohrer was strong on the mound, pitching five solid innings in giving up only one hit and two earned runs, while striking out three and walking one. Manheim, which has had some hot bats lately, exploded for four runs in the top of the first inning. Cam Eberly was 3-for-5 with an RBI and Riley McGallicher was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Dylan Yoder was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Riley McGallicher and Dylan Yoder at the plate are swinging it well, Central head coach Jason Thompson said. Brady Harbach has been getting on base a lot. His on base percentage is .600. As well as the Barons are swinging the bats, Thompson sees room for improvement. “We still really haven’t hit our stride offensively yet,” he said, “which is a good thing. There is something to continue to work on.” Speaking of offense, on April 9, MC beat Northern Lebanon 16-2. Wyatt Becker earned the win on the mound, striking out seven and walking two. Manheim was actually losing 2-0 after five innings, as the Vikings scored two in the first inning, but the Barons exploded for16 runs in the sixth inning to end the game early on the 10-run rule. The sixth inning was highlighted by Malakai Zilinski, who pinch hit and had two bases-clearing triples in the inning. Riley McGallicher was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Harbach was 2for-4 with two RBIs. TRACK MC boys beat Cocalico 114-36 Monday, April 5. Instead of multiple winners, as in past meets, the scoring was spread out for the boys, showing their depth. Michael Greenwalt captured the 1600m and Brady Knier took first in the 3200m. The Barons swept the 800m, with Gabe Redcay taking first. The relay team of Reccay, Knier, Luke Red-

Stay Witty At Camp Will BY COURTNEY MENGEL
In 2006, Laura Howell turned her dream of teaching Shakespeare full time into a reality. Prior to this, Howell was working as a theater teacher at Lancaster County Day School, where she taught Shakespeare to high school students. It was at this time that she noticed how excited students were about Shakespeare and how the language and the plays themselves empowered the students. Luckily, Howell was in a position where she could open a theater dedicated to Shakespeare, so she founded The People’s Shakespeare Project. The theater group started as a college performance company and performed during the summer at Elizabethtown College. After a couple years went by, the group moved to Millersville University and staged plays outside during the summer.
The People’s Shakespeare Project has two arms: an educational and a performative. Camp Will falls under the educational arm. Camp Will started in 2008 and was only for students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. After the students begged Howell to widen the age group, she gave in and set up two sections: one for middle-schoolers and another for high-schoolers. Due to the pandemic, The People’s Shakespeare Project was completely virtual last year. “We kept the theater going,” explained Howell. “We had a small group of high school students, and Zoom worked well, so we’re doing it again.” The People’s Shakespere Project will offer one session of Camp Will to rising eighththrough 12th-graders from Monday, July 12, to Friday, July 30. Given the likelihood that many students are tired of Zoom, Howell and her co-workers are redesigning Camp Will
in ways that they think will make the camp more palatable online. Students will record an abridged version of “Twelfth Night” within three weeks, and it will stream on YouTube with every actor tuning in via Zoom on July 30 at 7:30 p.m. The People’s Shakespeare Project has executed three virtual plays, all of which can be seen on its YouTube channel. Streaming is free to viewers, but donations are welcome. There are some silver linings to Camp Will being virtual. Thanks to Zoom, different guest artists from all over the world will teach every day. “We have people tuning in from New Orleans, Massachusetts, and even Turkey!” exclaimed Howell. “Kids will have incredible educational and performative opportunities.” Howell believes that a lot of students, especially highschoolers, have learned to be
afraid of Shakespeare. “I feel that if they put themselves out there and experience Shakespeare the way it’s supposed to be - by living, breathing, speaking, and acting it - kids will latch onto Shakespeare and love it because there’s power in these words,” said Howell. The People’s Shakespeare Project offers scholarships to students who need financial assistance to attend Camp Will. Enrollment is limited to 14 students. “We want to give the kids personal attention,” explained Howell. “It’s impor- Students have attended Camp Will through The People’s Shakespeare Project for several years. tant that the kids get a good education and have fun at the FARMDALE/MOUNT JOY AREA same time.” For more information about Camp Will, visit 4/5 BR Home, 1 Bath - Garage - Full Basement https://peoplesshakespeare Fenced Backyard; Personal Property; Antiques; Furniture project.org. The class will hold its inaugural plant sale from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Fridays, April 30 and May 7, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, May 1 and 8. The sale will be held at the greenhouse, 400 E. Adele Ave. For many years, Manheim Central students sold tomato plants at the Landis Valley Herb and Garden Faire. “This year, we decided as a class that we wanted to use our greenhouse to not only grow tomatoes, but to focus on marketing, learning new things and expanding a little,” said junior Anna Haldeman. “We decided to do more.” Plants available at the sale will include 31 varieties of tomatoes, 21 types of peppers and eight kinds of herbs, plus four varieties of squash along with watermelon, cantaloupe and eggplant.
“People should come and check out the sale because this year we have so many varieties of plants and because you can come here to where we’re growing them and see what we’re doing,” stated junior Sandra Mendoza. “Everything we grow is heirloom.” Working in the greenhouse had been an extracurricular activity at Manheim Central for years, but this is the first time this course is being offered as a semester-long class. Zach Witmer, a senior, said the class interested him because of the subject matter and the teacher, Seth Kensinger. “Everybody loves Dr. K, so I really wanted to take a class with him,” he noted. “This turned out to be so much fun. We’re learning about running our own business and what it takes to have a successful

Lauren Grove, who is in 11th grade, said her favorite part of the class has been the autonomy Kensinger has given his students. “I really enjoy the freedom we have in this class,” she shared. “We get to make a lot of our own decisions about how we want the class to go.” Proceeds from the plant sale will help with greenhouse operating costs, Anna noted. “We are really lucky to have a greenhouse like this at our

Student Group Creates Billboard The DUI Council of Lancaster County has announced the unveiling of a billboard in Lancaster County created by the group Leaders of Future Generations. The billboard, which aims to discourage underage drinking, was created in observation of Alcohol Awareness Month, April, and was unveiled on April 7. Leaders of Future Generations is a group of peer leaders who encourage their friends to make good decisions and help them when they fall into bad
situations. This year’s billboard uses the message of “Put Alcohol on the Sidelines.” The billboard will be at 1305 Manheim Pike, Lancaster, through Sunday, April 25. The students who created the billboard are Keegan Kavanaugh, Danny Lester, Alex McCloud, Braedon Martinez, Norah Martin, Molly O’shea, and Paige Laurence. Their advisers were Matt Weaver, Ashley Denlinger, and Vanessa Mendez, all from Compass Mark. Also present at
the billboard unveiling were Officer Natalie Littlehale of the Manheim Township Police Department and Terry Trego from Sen. Scott Martin’s office. This billboard design was made possible by a grant from the Lancaster County Drug and Alcohol Commission. The Leaders of Future Generations group, which is affiliated with Compass Mark, has now created three billboards for the DUI Council of Lancaster County.
