House On The Rock Purchases Historic Moose Building On Feb. 27, House on the Rock Family Ministries purchased the property at 10-18 N. Market St., Elizabethtown, from the Elizabethtown Lodge 596 Loyal Order of the Moose. The Moose commissioned highly decorated Lancaster architect Cassius Emlen Urban to design the building, which has been a hallmark of downtown Elizabethtown since it was constructed in 1924. Urban is well-known for his Classical Revival design, and his work can be seen in other local historical buildings such as Milton Hershey’s mansion, the Hershey Community Center Building, Stevens High School, and the former Watt & Shand Department
Store building in downtown Lancaster, which is now home to the Lancaster County Convention Center and Marriott. The Moose building was constructed by the Hoffer Bros. company in stages from 1924 to 1928 and was originally used as a movie theater, bowling alley, and social hall for the Moose fraternity. From 1828 to 1923, the lot where it stands was the site of a much-expanded two story wood-frame structure known as the Hotel Greenawalt, run by Col. Abraham Greenawalt, a significant political figure in Elizabethtown’s history. Prior to that, it was operated by Michael Brenneman as Brenneman’s
Inn. Brenneman purchased the structure from postmaster Michael Coble, whose brother Jacob ran a tavern there until 1822. House on the Rock Family Ministries is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 2004 under the leadership of Bruce McCracken, with the express goal of rebuilding the family unit. Through its marriage ministry, The Marriage Hub, House on the Rock has been working to rebuild marriages in crisis by offering Marriage Intensive Retreat programs. The Marriage Hub has been holding Marriage Intensive Retreats in Elizabethtown since 2015. The ministry has helped hundreds of See House On The Rock pg 5

Advice For Dealing With Stress
MC1
Some of the most popular horror movies and literary thrillers have been built around the concept of pandemics. Part of the enjoyment of those forms of entertainment comes from the ability to

watch the devastation unfold without being in danger oneself. But now, due to the coronavirus, pandemic is no longer just an issue experienced through a screen or the pages of a book. “In order to contain the spread of COVID-19, the United States government has directed its citizens and occupants to follow specific protocols that tend to paint somewhat of a grim scenario,” related Kathleen M. Brown, a mental health counselor with New Hope Community Life Ministry in Quarryville. “This type of stress throws us off balance, affecting our daily activities, such as eating habits, thinking processes, sleep, productivity, relationships, and general sense of well-being.” It is possible to remain safe and calm and to maintain a sense of normality during times of uncertainty, Brown asserted. In her work, she has encountered many clients who experience anxiety to some degree or another, and she has developed a framework for coping. “Although each case is unique, there are some tried-and-true practices that can help us overcome some of the negative effects of living during this stressful time,” Brown said.
In December last year, Melanie Underhill, a four-year veteran of single parenting, announced that she had created Single Moms, a support group for single mothers. The group started out meeting in person once a month at First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg, 101 S. Decatur St., Strasburg, but with the sudden changes to everyday life recently, meetings have been augmented. “I am holding our single moms support group online now every Friday on Zoom,” Underhill said. “The response … has been incredible. We are meant for community, and the moms are finding support and validation sharing their stories and struggles with those who understand fully. It’s also wonderful to see friendships form and the sharing of child care, resources and information.” The formation of Single Moms could not have come at a more crucial time, Underhill noted. “In these uncertain times, single parents may feel more isolated and alone than ever,” Underhill explained. “Fear of losing their job or income may plague their thoughts, and limited food, basic necessities, child care, and emotional support may mount up to overwhelming anxiety. Often, too, a

Underhill offered some encouragement to single parents, saying, “Know that you are strong and resilient, having faced difficult times before and emerging wiser yet.” Taking care of one’s self can help parents stay strong, Underhill said. She noted that catching up on sleep (if children allow it, that is), exercising, and eating as well as possible are important. Parents can also find a few minutes each day to stop and reflect and then make a plan for the following day. Establishing a daily routine is helpful in eliminating surprises, Underhill suggested. She also recommended taking a free class from online learning institutions and forming a child care co-op with other families in the neighborhood. Even with social distancing in place, there are ways that individuals can support single parents. “First and foremost, reach out to check in,” Underhill said. “Offer encouragement, support,

and validation. Lack of a partner to bounce ideas off of and to dispel anxiety can further the feelings of isolation.” Practical ways to support a single parent including making a meal or leaving a bag of groceries on their doorstep, dropping off books or an activity bag for the children to do at home, and researching available benefits, programs, and aid that single parents may qualify for during this time. Underhill is working on a housing share program to help to reduce the housing need in the community. Her idea is to connect single mothers with each other so that two single mothers and their children can share one home. “This helps moms afford a better home in a better neighborhood, cover expenses, (provide) emotional support, (and share) child care and household burdens,” Underhill said. “The community needs to think outside of the box to address the needs of single parents, especially in these trying times.” For more information about Single Moms or to be added to the Zoom meeting, readers may email Underhill at melanies underhill@gmail.com.

The event was also supported through donations of hams.
Dealing With Stress from pg 1 First and foremost, breathe. Brown explained that researchers and scientists have found that deep, mindful breathing engages the nervous system, which controls heart rate, thus reducing many of the physical effects of anxiety. There are a wealth of YouTube videos and apps that explain how to practice mindful breathing, with Brown suggesting Breathe2Relax, AnxietyCoach, and AnxietyFree as places to start. “My personal favorites contain visuals like triangle breathing or rainbow breathing,” she said. Another research-based method of decreasing anxiety hormones is gazing into the faces of babies, loved ones, and pets, which releases oxytocin, sometimes called the love hormone. “I also encourage you to reframe the coronavirus situation by looking for the silver lining,” Brown remarked. “Most of us probably have more time available due to the closure of
most activities.” Some of the activities Brown suggested include playing with children and pets, inviting a positive impact on moods by going outside to experience greenery and sunlight, reading or watching uplifting stories, taking a nap, practicing yoga, soaking in a luxurious bath, engaging in joyful movement, eating nutritious foods, laughing out loud, sending blessings to those in need, offering gratitude, and devoting oneself to a spiritual practice. Help is available if individuals need more guidance in dealing with the stresses of social distancing, scarcity of resources, lack of work or income, or even the areas for improvement that are revealed by unexpectedly spending an increased amount of time with loved ones or housemates. Brown recommended contacting a mental health professional for assistance; some mental health professionals may be available for remote sessions.
Lancaster County Career and Technology Center’s (LCCTC) Brownstown Campus was honored as one of eight Pennsylvania career and technical education (CTE) schools to receive the Career and Technical Education Excellence Award from the Pennsylvania Department of Education. LCCTC Brownstown noted that it is also the only school to have received the designation two years in a row. The award was presented during the Feb. 13 CTE Celebration dinner that is part of the Pathways to Career Readiness Symposium held at the Hershey Lodge and Convention Center. Schools receiving the honor met a particularly demanding challenge during standardized, end-of-program technical assessments. Seventy-five percent or more of all the students in these schools scored Advanced during their assessments. LCCTC’s standardized assessments are the National Occupational Competency Testing Institute (NOCTI) tests, held in March. NOCTI tests are

technical competency assessment products and services for secondary and post-secondary educational institutions around the world. Strong NOCTI scores on the individual level mean that a student has demonstrated mastery of a given skill set, an indicator of employment readiness. Strong NOCTI scores on the institution level show that a career and technology center is producing students with the skills and knowledge they need to be job-ready. Administrative director Dr. Stuart Savin praised the faculty for its dedication to its students and programs. Savin commended the students for their drive toward mastery of their skill sets. James Brunken, principal of the LCCTC Willow Street Campus, was the Brownstown Campus’ principal during assessments in 2019. He said that the students’ success was a team effort made possible by the dedication of the LCCTC instructional staff, the IU13 support staff, and business and industry partners.

Wayside Church Offers Virtual Connections By Dayna M. Reidenouer
For the past few years, Wayside Presbyterian Church, 600 Stony Battery Road, Landisville, has livestreamed its worship services to members via UStream using a secure, password-protected connection. Grace Notes worship band and choir member Chris Rowles, whom the Rev. Dr. Stephen Fritz dubbed the “inhouse technology wizard,” formed
a volunteer team to run the electronics. Derrick Matthews was hired as audiovisual technician to manage the complexities of running the camera, operating slides, monitoring the internet, and responding to quality control issues submitted by viewers. Thus, when the shutdown was declared in March, Wayside was ready. UStream video administrator Frank Richards removed the password requirement, and webmaster

Brian Kosci added a link to www.waysidepc.org. All members of the public may now watch the services, logging on for traditional worship at 9:30 a.m. and contemporary worship at 11 a.m. During the traditional service, director of music Janelle Pabon plays keyboard and sings to the camera and accompanist Deb Konupka plays the grand piano or electronic organ. Parish associate the Rev. Larry Moir offers Scripture readings, prayers, and song support. Grace Notes takes the stage for the second service, with Rowles on bass guitar and vocals, David Kneier on guitar and vocals, and Pat Karkotsky on drums. During both services, Fritz preaches and also shares an object lesson for children. “I talk to the children as if they were sitting on the floor in front of me. Like Mr. Rogers, I … speak to their imaginations and the feelings they might be experiencing during this scary time,” he said. For people who do not have access to the internet, the church established a FreeConferenceCalling account for dial-up access. Individuals may call 480-660-5314 and enter conference code 314306 to listen to the Sunday morning services. For the first time in Fritz’s 20 years at Wayside, the church did not host an Easter sunrise service. However, the church still made Holy Week special, starting by broadcasting a Messianic Passover on Maundy Thursday. Fred and Mary Lou Kocher provided the Seder plate and special music. Mary Lou and Linda Anspach then changed the sanctuary banners and furniture coverings, called

Based on that experience, he noted, “I do not believe people ever ‘get over’ tragic events or get them ‘behind’ them. Rather, we all must find healthy ways to incorporate them into our life story so that they do not continue to hold us hostage, robbing our joy of the present and our hope for the future.” Fritz continued, “We will settle into a new normal with new challenges and new ways of being alone and together.” He is looking forward to hosting a welcome-back party when the way is clear. Feeding Pennsylvania Receives Donation
R057854
Pennsylvania Skill recently donated $250,000 to Feeding Pennsylvania, the state association of Feeding America Food Banks, to help the growing number of families struggling with food insecurity. The money from Pennsylvania Skill will be distributed among Feeding Pennsylvania’s nine member food banks that serve all 67 counties across the commonwealth, which are all seeing a rise in need as a result of the economic instability caused by COVID-19. Locally, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, which covers 27 counties, will receive a portion of the donation. The charitable food network continues to ramp up efforts to meet the increasing need, but this crisis response has also resulted in a significant financial burden for the food banks in procuring additional food, supplies and transportation. Food banks have urgently relied upon the generosity of donors to support these costs, which include supplies to ensure the health and safety of their employees, volunteers and the clients they serve. Furthermore, the food banks have continued to see a rise in the cost of food from manufacturers. The need for donors will continue as food banks anticipate the crisis response may last for months. The Feeding Pennsylvania funding is the largest single contribution Pennsylvania Skill has made. Through its charitable giving, the organization regularly donates to community organizations, including food banks, volunteer fire departments and social service organizations. Feeding Pennsylvania is a partnership formed among Pennsylvania’s Feeding America member food banks. Collective efforts promote and aid members in securing food and other resources to reduce hunger and food insecurity for their communities across Pennsylvania while also providing a shared voice on the issues of hunger and food access. Member food banks serve nearly 2 million people annually by distributing more than 160 million pounds of food through a network of more than 2,600 agencies. For more information about Feeding Pennsylvania, readers may visit www.feedingpa.org.
