Ruhl’s Church Will Host Breakfast BY CATHY MOLITORIS
It’s never too early for a taste of summer. Stop by Ruhl’s Church and you can enjoy an all-you-can-eat strawberry and waffle breakfast on Saturday, May 7. The meal will be held in the fellowship hall of the church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, from 6 to 10 a.m. or
until sold out. Proceeds will benefit a mission trip in June. Along with strawberries and waffles, the breakfast will feature pancakes, eggs, breakfast casserole, bacon, sausage, home-fried potatoes and assorted beverages. “There’s lots of good food to eat,” said Gail Ruhl, mission team coordinator. “It’s a great time to come and visit with See Breakfast pg 5
Manheim Central High School students will host a plant sale in May.
Greenhouse Sale Will Showcase Students’ Green Thumbs uilding on the success of last year’s inaugural greenhouse plant sale, Manheim Central students are gearing up for a second event. Students in Seth Kensinger’s Agronomy, Soil and Biotechnology class will hold a plant sale from 1 to 6 p.m. on Fridays, May 6 and 13, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, May 7 and 14. The sale will be held at the greenhouse behind Manheim Central High School, 400 Adele Ave. “We planted tomatoes, peppers, cabbage, cucumbers, zucchini, lots of herbs, watermelon and cantaloupe,” said junior Luke Snavely. In total, the sale will spotlight 38 varieties of tomatoes and 24 types of peppers, among other plants. For years, students at Manheim Central grew tomato plants to sell at the Landis Valley Herb & Garden Faire, but last year, the students decided to do their own sale and to expand their offerings. “ We thought it would be easier to do something here at school so we wouldn’t have to transport the
that changes color as it ripens. She added that the class aims to price the plants competitively. Kensinger said the students have impressed him with their enthusiasm, willingness to learn and passion for plants. “They are learning so many skills in this class,” he stated, adding that all of this has been done in the midst of major construction going on at the high school, which will include a new greenhouse next year. “It’s not learning just how to grow the plants and what the plants’ needs are, but also learning how to intelligently talk about the plants and share what they’ve grown with the community.” Additional students in the class are Miranda Baum, Alaina Bruckhart, Judah Bruckhart, Madelyn Strait, Megan Garber, Sidney Kopp, Gabby Fittery and Megan Sawadsky. The entrance to the sale will be through the agriculture gate at the rear of the high school building. For more information, visit www.manheim central.org/Page/1233 or check out the Facebook and Instagram pages by searching for “mc.ag.greenhouse.”
Ruhl’s Church’s mission trips are supported by fundraising efforts like the annual strawberry and waffle breakfast.
Benefiting The Community Through Barbecue BY CATHY MOLITORIS

plants, and we wouldn’t have to worry about running out of stock,” said senior Anna Haldeman, who was involved with the project last year as well. “It’s also a good opportunity to show the customers where we do everything.” To prepare for the sale, the students have spent the semester learning about growing techniques, different varieties of plants and horticultural terms. Anna noted that it’s been a bit of learning curve for some of the class. “There are only two in this class who have done this before,” she said. “Everyone else is brand new. This class has been about learning new things, how to be successful with new varieties, making sure we know and understand what we’re growing.” Sophomore Kelci Sauder said the students chose what to grow based on requests from the community as well as what has worked well in the past. “We are selling things you can’t get at other places,” she stated, noting some of the unusual varieties that will be offered, such as Pork Chop, a yellow tomato, and Buena Mulata, a purple hot pepper

According to Jane Markert, who cochairs the St. Luke’s United Church of Christ (UCC) Spring Thing Bazaar with Amy Adams, there will be lots of changes this year from the 2021 event. The silent auction, themed gift basket stand, and heirloom tomatoes raised by Manheim Central High School students will all be back after a few years’ hiatus. In addition, the event will return to its original date of the first Saturday in May. Spring Thing will be held at the church, 222 N. Broad St., Lititz, on Saturday, May 7, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. “Everyone is welcome. There’s something for everyone,” noted Markert. As in the past, the church will have space in its parking lot for up to 40 yard sale, craft, and home business vendors. Vendors will line the parking lot, with a car parked between each vendor space. Among the vendors will be those selling sea glass items, vinyl print shirts, crocheted items, kitchen towels, and Pampered Chef products. The themed gift basket stand will

feature baskets holding food items such as wine, herbs, gourmet popcorn, vodka sauce, pasta, and more. Sandy Whitson will make a cat lover’s basket, and Markert is creating a vintage Boyds Bears basket. Other themes that may be represented include a children’s activity basket, a “Pamper Yourself” basket, a movie basket, and a picnic basket. The silent auction, which will feature a variety of donated items, will begin at 7 a.m., and winners will be announced at 2 p.m. Granny’s Attic, known for its selection of donated items, will be open throughout the event. This year, the stand will feature household items, puzzles, small furniture pieces, and clothing for men and women such as shirts, slacks, jackets, and purses. All unsold clothing will go to Ukrainian refugees. Church pastor James Haun, who is a certified barber, will give haircuts, along with church member Mary Kay Garner, who is a licensed hairdresser. Each year, the two team up to provide cuts and trims by donation during the event. Live music at the bazaar will be provided by Clyde Spangler, who will play his electric guitar. You can stay and converse, catch up with old friends or meet new ones.” During the meal, the church will show a video spotlighting previous mission trips. “We are hoping that might spark people to ask questions and possibly even spark interest in joining us on a trip in another year,” Ruhl noted. In June, a group will travel to Kentucky to work with the Central Appalachian Missionary Conference, formerly known as Red Bird Mission. “We’ll be doing local service work throughout the community,” Ruhl explained, noting that past projects have included everything from constructing porches and handicapped ramps on homes to electrical, plumbing and roofing work. “We have a very skilled team who goes on these trips, and we can do anything from basic painting to bigger projects. We’re excited to do whatever they feel they need us to do.” Ruhl and her husband have been mission team coordinators for 14 years, and the trip to Kentucky will be a sentimental one for the couple. “Going there was the first trip my husband and I organized,” Ruhl recalled. “This will be our sixth or seventh time going there, but we haven’t been for several years, so it will be kind of like a homecoming for us and a chance to see old friends.” The mission trips are intergenerational and offer an

Classmates are also invited to gather from 6 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17, at Loxley’s Restaurant, 500 Centerville Road, Lancaster. The evening will feature a buffet dinner and a cash bar. opportunity for youths and adults to learn from each other while serving alongside one another, Ruhl said. This will be the group’s first trip in three years since the pandemic canceled trips in 2020 and 2021. “We’re so excited to go,” Ruhl commented. “We’re ready to get our hands dirty again.” Reservations are not required for the breakfast, but Ruhl recommends arriving early since items often sell out. “It’s a low-key, friendly atmosphere, where people can be together in fellowship,” she stated. “Come and check out our church if you’ve never been to our church before and learn more about what we do.” For more information on the breakfast, visit https://ruhlschurch.org or call the church office at 717665-3400.

Launching Urban DAY CAMP
You can help support the retirement community’s mission by having dinner on Friday, May 13. Mt. Hope will offer a curbside pickup barbecue meal from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the LCBC Manheim campus, 2392 Mount Joy Road. The meal will include fire-grilled chicken from Peters’ Barbecue, saucy smoked baked beans with bacon, a baked potato with sour cream and butter, a dinner roll with butter, a fruit cup and a homemade dessert. Proceeds from the meal will benefit the residents and facility, which provides skilled long-term nursing and rehabilitation care for seniors and disabled residents, regardless of their ability to pay. “ With a heart to serve seniors and the disabled on low and/or fixed incomes, Mt. Hope is home to 50 residents who need nursing care in Rapho Township, Manheim and beyond,” said Wilson. “Most of our residents at Mt. Hope do not have the financial resources or the broader supportive network

Join us June 1st Since our founding in 1954, Black Rock Retreat’s mission has been spreading the gospel and strengthening the church. Over the years, more than 850 campers received full or partial sponsorship through the Black Rock Retreat Sponsorship Fund. This year, through partnerships with inner city organizations and churches, Black Rock Retreat will launch our first ever URBAN DAY CAMP. This will allow more inner-city kids to have the opportunity to experience summer camp.
Featuring special guest speaker

Black Rock will provide bus transportation to a partnering church just minutes away from where the kids live. Their ballfield will be beautifully and creatively transformed into a place where kids can be kids! Lunch and snacks will be served daily, and the children will have the opportunity to participate in archery, games, and more. From 9:30am to 3:30pm throughout the month of June, we aim to serve 150 kids in the first year alone. You can help Black Rock make URBAN DAY CAMP a summer experience where 150 Lancaster City kids hear the message of Christ and experience the great outdoors! to cover the cost of their care. There is an average gap of about $150 a day per resident between the state Medicaid reimbursement rate and the actual cost of care for our residents on state assistance.” Last year, Mt. Hope covered approximately $1.4 million of unreimbursed care costs or charitable care. As part of a capital campaign renovation project, Mt. Hope has fully upgraded its 29 resident rooms and has fully renovated the first-floor women’s and men’s public restrooms. Funds are still needed to upgrade the main parking lot of the facility as well as the resident common areas such as the resident first- and second-floor lounges, the dining hall and the conference room. “The Medicaid funding gap makes it increasingly difficult for Mt. Hope to absorb the cost of benevolent care without searching for other alternatives to offset rising costs and continuing with creative fundraising initiatives,” Wilson said. “The See Barbecue pg 11

Baron Track Teams Remain Undefeated
BY ERIC PYLES
All they do is win, win, win, win. With an 86-46 victory over Garden Spot on the girl’s side and a tentative 68-64 win on the boy’s side, the Manheim Central track teams remain undefeated on the season. While the Lady Barons can officially count their win as a win, the boys cannot. High winds kept the teams from contesting both the high jump and pole vault meaning the fourpoint gap between the teams could swing either way depending on how those events unfold. As for the events that were contested, Manheim got two solo wins each from Landon McGallicher, Kahlen Watt, and Tyler Fahnestock. McGallicher did his work in the hurdles, taking both the 110H and the 300H while Fahnestock picked up his wins in the shot put and discus. Watt split his solo wins between the track (100m) and the field (javelin). McGallicher and Watt added a 400m relay win with help from Larry Marley and Bode Sipel while Gage Redcay, Luke Redcay, Cam Evans, and Michael Greenwald took the 3200m relay to account for the final win. The Lady Barons also skipped the high jump and pole vault but their domination on the track made it a non-point. Sarah Forry and Rachel Nolt fronted that track dominance with two solo and one relay win apiece. Nolt claimed the 100m and 200m while Forry did her work in the 800m and 1600m. Nolt added a 400m relay win with help from Milan Snell, Abigail
Reed, and Malea Stoner while Forry helped take the 3200m relay along with Julianna Lindberg, Reagan Ibach and Emma Herman. Manheim finished the meet with a win in the 1600m relay with Snell (400m) and Stoner (300H) tacking on final track wins. Madison Knier led the way in the field, topping the long and triple jumps as well as the javelin. Laci Nelson (shot put) and Chloe Enck (discus) accounted for the final two wins. SOFTBALL The softball team responded to a two-game slide with a quick two game winning streak. The first of those came on April 14th when the Lady Barons slipped by Elizabethtown 6-5. Gabby Wettig picked up the win after covering all seven innings, scattering nine hits to go with five strikeouts. Brianna Mylin carried the offense with a twohit, three-RBI game that included a two-run single in the second that put Manheim on top 32. Brynn Lehman drove in one run with help from an E-town error that got Central on the
board in the second. The Lady Barons made sure no seat edges were needed on the 19th, blowing by Pequea Valley 18-1 in five innings. Wettig was the star of the show, covering all five innings on the mound to get the win while rapping out four hits and three RBIs at the plate. Three of those four hits were doubles, with her second inning poke pushing two of the three runs across. Wettig the pitcher allowed just four hits and one run to go with nine strikeouts and one walk. Riley Hostetter matched Wettig’s four hits but finished with four RBIs thanks to a three-run double in the third coupled with a one run single in the second. Mikayla Martin and Mickey Lauver provided even more support with matching one-hit, two-RBI games. TENNIS Thanks to Mother Nature being on overdrive the boy’s tennis team has seen the last portion of their 2022 regular season tossed around and rescheduled. That left just an April 13th battle with Cocalico on the slate over the last week with the Barons falling to the
11 strikeouts and two walks. Central did the bulk of their damage in the third, plating five of their six runs with both Book and Connelly driving in two runs. Harbach picked up the last RBI by getting the rally going with a run producing single. Central needed just four innings to rout Pequea Valley on the 19th, posting a 15-0 shutout. Connelly was the beneficiary of all that offense, needing just 41 pitches over the four innings to pickup the no-hit vic-
Eagles by a 7-0 final. VOLLEYBALL The boys’ volleyball team suffered their third loss of the season on April 13th, falling to York Suburban by a 3-1 final. After dropping the opening two games 25-21 and 25-16, Central was able to stave off elimination with a 25-22 game three win but the Trojans ended the match with a 25-15 game four victory. Barend Oostdam posted seven blocks and six kills while Dylan Musser finished with 29 assists and four blocks. John Wenger added 12 digs and Josh Dipple eight kills. Manheim bounced back on the 19th with a 3-0 romp over Garden Spot. Musser had 25 assists, four blocks and two aces to lead Central to the 25-11, 2624 and 25-15 win. Dipple picked up 12 more kills and Wenger 12 more digs while Oostdam added eight blocks and three kills. Trent Groff chipped in with six kills and two aces. BASEBALL The baseball team’s first and only loss of 2022 came on April 13th via a 1-0 final to Lancaster Catholic. The Barons wasted no time getting back to it with a 61 win over Section Two leader, Lampeter-Strasburg on the 14th. Nolan Book carried the big bat with help from Cayde Connelly and Brady Harbach, making life easy for Jared Murry to pick up the win. Murray did not need much help, allowing just two hits and one sixth inning run to go with

Manheim’s Landon McGallicher clears a hurdle on his way to a 14.9 win in the high hurdles in last Tuesday’s Section Two meet at Garden Spot.
tory. Book drove in three runs in the game with his sac fly in the fourth kicking in the 15-run rule and closing out the game. Collin Thompson had just one hit, but it was a three-run home run that came as part of Manheim’s 12-run third inning. Ky Watson joined the one-hit, multi-RBI fun, driving in two with a third inning double that added to his second inning bases loaded walk, giving the sophomore three RBIs for the game.
