SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954
VOL LXII • NO 14
A Year In The Life Of Seniors BY CATHY MOLITORIS
On hand at the 2020 EPC Golf Outing during a donation from $3,000 presenting sponsor Alwine Security to GSS were (from left) EPC representatives Lauren Hillegas, Jeremy Engle, and Jocelyn Engle; Alwine Security owner Jamie Alwine; Nate Hoffer, CEO of GSS; and Derek Sanders and Matt Rhoads of Alwine.
Evaleen Weinhold, a 96-year-old resident of Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community in Manheim, summed up the resilience of senior citizens this past year when she imparted the lesson she’s learned from the pandemic: “Lean on the Lord and go to your knees. … This, too, shall pass.” While COVID-19 has affected all segments of the population, the impact has been particularly hard on seniors like Evaleen, who have
14th Annual EPC Golf Outing Will Benefit Good Samaritan Services In 2002, Good Samaritan Services (GSS) purchased its first property in Phoenixville, where it was able to serve five people at a time. Nineteen years later, GSS has acquired 13 different properties and can serve 200 people every day. GSS came to the Lancaster County area in 2011 after opening an emergency shelter in Ephrata, which provides housing for women and children. GSS provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Some of the services offered by GSS include eviction prevention, emergency shelter, traditional housing, affordable housing, and permanent housing services across Lancaster and
Chester counties. The organization’s end goal is to empower people to feel confident and capable enough to maintain their own safe and stable housing.
“... There’s such a stigma that comes with homelessness, but it’s so far from the truth. Anyone can become homeless at the drop of a dime.” “Our organization is unique in that we can help people with stable housing regardless of where they are in their journey,” stated GSS development and communications coordinator Shadoe Caprell. “A lot of times, people who are homeless or

at risk of homelessness can’t receive assistance from agencies unless they reach the definition of homelessness. We can fill in the cracks.” Since July 2020, GSS has served nearly 400 men, women, and children through its emergency shelter, residential housing, and housing support programs; provided nearly $90,000 in rental assistance, including 18 eviction preventions; and helped 53 individuals and families successfully complete their programs and find stable housing. “I get to meet individuals in our shelter and hear their stories,” said Caprell. “They’re all such wonderful, beautiful people. There’s such a stigma that comes with homelessness, but it’s so far from the truth. Anyone can become homeless at the drop of a dime.” Ninety-seven percent of GSS’ funding comes from community donations and fundraisers such as the annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) Golf Outing. The 14th annual EPC Golf Outing will take place on Friday, June 11, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville, with tee times at 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Meals, beverages, and snacks will be provided, and participants will have chances to win prizes throughout the golf course. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to GSS.
The Friends of the Manheim Community Library will hold their annual spring book sale at the Manheim Farm Show Exhibition Hall, 502 Adele Ave. The sale will take place on Thursday and Friday, May 6 and 7, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturday, May 8, from 9 a.m. to noon. Saturday’s sale will be a bag sale, with special prices for filling one or two bags with books.

dealt with fear, isolation and loneliness as the pandemic has closed retirement communities to the public. With restrictions being lifted, seniors at Mount Hope reflected on this past year - and how community members can help support the mission of the retirement community. Before she came to Mount Hope, Evaleen worked as a registered nurse and raised four children with her husband, Ernest, who passed away in 2015. When the pandemic hit, she learned to cope without visits from her children and grandchildren. “I just didn’t feel as free,” she recalled. “I kept thinking, ‘This, too, will be conquered,’ ... The Lord gives me what I can bear and the wherewithal to bear it if I need to.” While her family could no longer come and sit on her bed with her, they could talk to her on a phone from outside her window.

April Lynn Gibble Downey can trace her family’s roots in Manheim back hundreds of years. Always fascinated with history, Downey knew her hometown would make a good subject for a book, so she wrote one. “Images of America: Manheim” was published in February. Downey, who currently lives outside of Baltimore, will sign copies of her book in the courtyard of REO Manheim Marketplace, 51 N. Main St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 1. The book is part of the “Images of America” series published by Arcadia Publishing that focuses on towns across the United States. “I was in a bookstore, and I saw the series, and I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if they had one for Manheim?’” Downey recalled. “There wasn’t one, so I thought, ‘I could write one.’” She submitted her proposal for the book in December of 2019, received approval to begin working on it in January of 2020 and spent about six months researching and collecting historic photographs and documents for the book. “The book has about 220 photographs, and almost all of them are from the Manheim Historical Society,” Downey said, adding that a few were donated by individuals and she shot a few herself. “The book begins with a general history of Pennsylvania, talking about William Penn and then about Baron Stiegel, the founder of Manheim,” she stated. “Each chapter has an
introduction to the time period covered in it.” Downey, who is in the process of switching careers, is looking to get into historical research, especially after discovering how enjoyable it was to write this book. “I find our past really interesting,” she noted. “I have always loved history. I knew this book would be a cool idea, but once I got to the historical society, I started thinking, ‘This is a really, really good idea.’ There is just so much history in Manheim. There are so many old buildings, so many records and photographs from the past.” Once the book was published, Downey connected with Suzanne Reiley, who owns REO Manheim Marketplace and is also president of the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce. Reiley said she was happy to help Downey promote the history of the town and host the book signing.

“April will have maps with corresponding page numbers for people to take and perhaps stroll around town to see the actual buildings from her book,” Reiley remarked. That was what really drew April into the project, she says - the fact that so many historic sites remain in Manheim. “I love seeing the old photographs and knowing you can still see those buildings today,” she said. “I love being able to walk through town and feeling the town’s history. I can picture the horses and carriages going down the street.” Proceeds from sales of Downey’s book at the book signing will benefit the Manheim Historical Society. Tom Kauffman will provide live music during the event. For more information on the book signing, visit www.manheimchamber.org.

the fill-in head coach for Manheim Central’s Janelle Haying, who is out the rest of the season for family reasons. He has been involved as a coach at Manheim since 2012 when his daughter, Katie, played catcher on the team that lost in the state semifinals. His daughter, Rachel, followed her sister as a Central catcher. After starting the season 4-0, the Lady Barons have lost five straight games, and VanBlargan must help his team get back its confidence. He noted that the 4-0 start came against teams that are not as strong as the teams the Lady Barons have played lately, the likes of Northern Lebanon (a section leader), Donegal (MC seems to struggle against its rival), and then some of the better teams in the league in Lancaster Catholic, Warwick and Pequea Valley. “They faced better pitching and the bats have just dried up,” he said. “At the beginning of the year, they were more aggressive and lately they’ve been tentative, watching too many good strikes go by. Sports from pg 4 said the pressure was on his No. 2 doubles team of Groff and Snavely. The duo battled back from a 72 deficit to make it 7-4, but Ephrata’s team of Tyler Martin and Colin Zucchi got the next point to win 84. This gave the Mounts a 2-1 lead going into singles action. In No. 3 doubles, Ginder and Donmoyer held on for a dramatic 9-8 (7-5) victory. Unfortunately for the Barons (51 league, 11-5 overall), Snavely was the only Manheim player to win in singles. “Ephrata came out strong and were more aggressive,” Jackel said. “Ben (Ginder) got sort of gassed after two hours of (No.3) doubles
and we needed wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles.” Considering the Barons came into the match 5-0 in the section and will compete in the league team tournament, Jackel is happy with the way the season has played out. “Only our No.1 (Rajaratnam) and No. 2 (Graff) players were on varsity before this year,” said Jackel. “These guys are very coachable.” Manheim beat Cocalico 5-2 on April 16. Getting wins in singles were Snavely, Ginder and Luke Horst, who all moved up a spot in the singles rankings after Graff was absent for state band.

Knier’s long jump of 17-6.5 broke Diane Jones’ mark set in 1982. Summer Bates, Chloe Enck, Brynn Trovinger and Raegan Nissley dominated the shot put and discus, capturing 15 of a possible 18 points. The boys are also 4-0, after defeating GS 130-20. Owen Pappas won the 100m and was a member of the winning 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Seniors from pg 1 For 90-year-old Barbara Mayo, the pandemic not only brought isolation from family members, but it also forced a separation between Barbara and her husband of 67 years, Devere. After having a stroke, Devere went to a rehab facility, but soon Barbara found she couldn’t visit him due to restrictions. “It was terrible,” she said, noting that she could only see Devere through a window. “He was very, very lonely and we watched (him) simply deteriorate. I felt like my world was collapsing.” Barbara prayed that an opportunity would open for the couple to move somewhere together, and she soon learned about Mount Hope, which focuses on keeping couples together if at all possible. Devere and Barbara spent five months together at Mount Hope before he passed away in January. Barbara wasn’t sure how she’d get through the days without Devere, but she now has a roommate, Marlene Campbell, with

I sat on the edge of my bed and thought, ‘Is this all I’m going to do?’ Then they paired me with Marlene, and now the days disappear.” Barbara is looking forward to visiting with her family, which now includes 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, grateful that her faith has guided her through this past year. Faith is a big part of the Mount Hope community, which provides skilled nursing and rehabilitation to 50 seniors regardless of their ability to pay. MCFEE To Hold Virtual Auction
Library from pg 1
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Since 2001, the Manheim Central Foundation for Educational Enrichment (MCFEE) has awarded more than $1.4 million in teacher grants, providing students with resources such as facility dogs and 3D printers. The organization raises the bulk of its funds through its annual auction. This year, the MCFEE 4 Kids Virtual Auction will be held from Wednesday, April 28, through Saturday, May 1. “This is our 18th year doing the auction,” said Amy Howett, executive director of MCFEE. “It is our signature annual fundraiser, and until COVID, we did it in person, but it was a hybrid model, with high-end items and a live auctioneer along with items people could bid on online.” Last year, the auction switched to be wholly virtual, and Howett said organizers were pleasantly surprised by the results. “We did really, really well last year,” she stated. “Our result was just as good as doing it in person.” This year’s event will feature more than 200 items, Howett remarked, adding, “It’s very convenient. People can bid on their smartphone, their laptop, their iPad. You can bid from your office, at home in bed, wherever you are comfortable.” The highest bidder will win the

item, and bidders will be notified if they’ve been outbid. Items will be available for curbside pickup at the Myer’s Furniture building, 936 Lancaster Road, Manheim, the week after the auction. Larger items at the auction will include a Philadelphia package, featuring Phillies tickets and more; a family four pack to Camelback Resort; a gas smoker; a Yeti package and a children’s edition Kindle Fire tablet. “In addition to the bigger items, we have more than 100 gifts cards to local, Lancaster County businesses and restaurants,” Howett stated. “We solicited cash donations from our larger donors rather than specific items, and then we put the money toward purchasing items from these smaller local businesses. It was a way for us to give back in a small

way after a year when COVID hurt a lot of small businesses.” Howett added that lead sponsors of the auction help to make it a success. “Children’s Champion sponsors of this year’s event include Buch Family of Funeral Homes, Longenecker’s Hardware Co., DDMP Investment Advisors, Lancaster Toyota Nissan, Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction, Ruhl Insurance and Rohrer’s Inc.,” she stated. “The Children’s Hero sponsors include Hess Auction Group and Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates architects.” Although last year’s virtual auction was a success and Howett has high hopes for this year, MCFEE hopes to go back to an in-person format next year. “The personal contact is really important, especially when it comes to fundraising,” she explained. “Faceto-face matters with fundraising.” Howett encourages anyone to check out the auction, adding that you never know what you might find. “There is something for everyone,” she said. “It’s a wide variety of stuff, from items for families, for young adults, for older adults, really for anyone. We try to make it fun and have items that people will really enjoy.” For more information on the MCFEE 4 Kids Virtual Auction, visit www.mcfee4kids.org.
Members of the Friends are invited to a preview night on Wednesday, May 5, from 4 to 6 p.m. Visitors may join the Friends of the Library at the door. “There is always a huge selection of high-quality hardcovers,” said Stacey Gibble Barrick, president of the Friends. “We get a lot of one-timeread books and a lot of current books. We get a lot of donations because we have voracious readers in Manheim, and we’re grateful for that.” The sale will also include paperbacks, cookbooks, travel and history books, as well as a children’s area. “We usually end up setting up chairs with boxes of books on them in the children’s section, because we run out of table room,” Barrick stated. The Friends of the Manheim Community Library hold two book sales a year, and the money raised helps fund the library’s children’s Summer Reading Program, among other projects. “We usually pay for speakers or special summer programs,” Barrick explained, noting that the library has recently expanded programming for middle school-age students as well as more adult programming. “They’ve

been having some really neat programs at the library, and we help provide funding for that.” Proceeds also help the Friends purchase additional books for the library and have even funded hiring extra staff members for the library. Barrick, who founded the Manheim Friends group in 2013, said memberships bring in up to $30,000 a year for the library, providing nearly 20% of the library’s annual budget. “Friends memberships are literally our lifeblood,” she noted. “I can’t tell you how many older people in our community, who haven’t been to the library for decades, will support us with a membership. They want to support a local, community library.” The Friends group also works to raise awareness and appreciation for the library’s resources and ser-
vices as well as advocate for library services and amenities, Barrick said. “It’s imperative that we make sure the library offers a full range of educational opportunities within the walls of the building,” she said. “We are about so much more than just books. We offer computer access, Wi-Fi access, special programming and much more.” Barrick added that the book sale offers not only a way to support the library, but also an opportunity to pick up a good read. “We always have more books than buyers, so I encourage anyone to come out and see what we have,” she remarked. “Expand your mind and your imagination with a good book.” For more information on the book sale, visit https://manheim library.org/book-sale.

“With COVID, people have been hit really hard this past year, so there are many people in need of the services that GSS offers,” noted EPC marketing director Lauren Hillegas. “You could be helping a family member or your neighbor.” Caprell said one of the biggest reasons to attend the event is that events such as the EPC Golf Outing are important to the funding of GSS. “This event can help hundreds and hundreds of people and provide them with a safe place to call home,” she emphasized. “Your donation and participation will make a direct impact on the community.” To date, the EPC Golf Outing has raised more than $100,000 for charity. Preregistration is required and can be completed up to 48 hours before the event. Auto Auction. “The Mother’s Day Make-A-Wish Truck Convoy is such an important fundraising event, and our team at Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction is so honored to host it at our location.” Money raised by the convoy helps to grant wishes to children with lifethreatening illnesses. “The convoy and the events occurring with it help fund 75% of the wishes in the Susquehanna Valley,” Finch noted, adding that the event committee has a goal of raising $300,000. “In addition to coming out on the day of the event, you can visit wish convoy.org to see all of our drivers who are fundraising and to donate to any driver you’d like to.”

The convoy committee is working on ways to include Wish children in the convoy. “Because our Wish children can’t be in public right now, we’re working on getting Wish kids on video chat to talk to the drivers,” Finch explained. “Some of them have been riding with the same driver for years, and they really feel a connection.” This is the second time the event will begin at the Manheim Auto Auction. Last year’s event was a scaleddown convoy of 30 drivers. “We are thrilled to be partnering with the Mother’s Day Make-A-Wish Truck Convoy for our second year,” said Joey Hughes, vice president/general manager of the Manheim Pennsylvania
