Looking Back At Manheim In World War II By Chelsea Peifer
“Manheim in World War II,” the latest publication compiled and written by Henry E. “Hank” Deemer, was a labor of love and gratitude for the lifelong Manheim resident. “I don’t want these war times to be forgotten,” stated Deemer. He describes the 114-page book as largely a record of Manheim-area men and women who served in World War II, with a section devoted to the role that Manheim as a community played during the war. Readers will learn about Manheim veterans who were present at significant World War II events, with accounts told of being aboard the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor, on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day, in the airborne drop on Holland, in the skies above Germany
and Japan, and on the “flying decks” of the USS Missouri at Japan’s surrender. “Those were the ones movie makers loved,” wrote Deemer in the book’s foreword. “Manheim boys were also in many other less well-known battles on land, in the air, and on the sea - including being on a troop ship torpedoed on the way to an active battle zone.” Photographs of numerous Manheimarea World War II veterans fill the first portion of Deemer’s book, thanks to the Manheim Sentinel, the borough’s former newspaper. In 1942 and most of 1943, the Sentinel published galleries of photographs of residents who served in the war and later printed “Letters Home” from individuals stationed around the nation and world. Many letters are See Manheim In World War II pg 3

On March 19, Mitchell Hanna, director of marketing, and other members of the Fairmount team were brainstorming ways to make life at the retirement community easier for residents who were affected by COVID-19 restrictions. “We had been talking about what we could do to meet emotional, spiritual, and social wellness (needs) of our residents,” said Hanna. “We had our chaplain doing small group sessions inside, but we were feeling bad about all the activities and group events (that had been canceled).” Cedric Steiner, who had been shadowing team members at Fairmount in order to complete his training in

The singer Steiner had in mind was Manheim resident Mackenzie Brubaker, currently a junior at Messiah College studying praise and worship. Hanna and Steiner took the idea to the Fairmount COVID-19 task force, a group of Fairmount leaders that meets daily to discuss how to implement COVID-19 updates from local, state, and federal entities. With permission from the task force, Brubaker arrived at the campus on March 21 with her guitar and some sound equipment to give residents socially distant concerts of hymns. Beginning at 1 p.m., Brubaker held five mini concerts, making her way around the

Fairmount campus at 333 Wheat Ridge Drive, Ephrata. Brubaker first set up on the south side of the Crest View building. After completing a 25-minute concert, she moved to the north side of Crest View. By 2 p.m., Brubaker was singing classic hymns and taking a few requests at the Wheat Ridge building. Hanna noted that residents responded positively, with many of them singing along from their windows, balconies, or patios. “(Brubaker) probably sang eight songs and took two or three requests (per concert),” recalled Hanna, who added that at the last concert, Brubaker sang an original song. Hanna said that video of Brubaker’s concert was also posted to Facebook and received positive responses. One resident emailed Hanna about the concert, saying in part, “I wanted to let you know (that the music) is something we miss. We enjoyed the variety; that is a blessing in these challenging times. We pray often for insight and understanding for wisdom for our leadership to keep the virus from coming here.” “Our residents are being very patient,” noted Hanna. “It can be frustrating when you’re used to getting out and about and socializing.” Looking ahead, he said that community leaders are moving forward one day at a time, being careful to review Fairmount’s policies to be sure they align with the health restrictions. “It’s an unprecedented time, and we’re trying to do our best,” said Hanna. “We know it will be a long haul.” Fairmount is located on 55 acres in West Earl Township. The community consists of two adjoing campuses presently offering 114 licensed Health Care beds, 74 licensed personal care beds, 12 residential living residences, 103 apartments, and 52 cottages. The organization is governed by a ninemember board of directors. More information about the organization may be found at www.FairmountHomes.org or by calling 717-354-1800.

featured in “Manheim in World War II, giving readers an eye-opening glimpse of the sacrifices made by those who served as well as the support they received on the homefront. A letter from Don Snader, stationed on an island in the Pacific on July 11, 1944, includes a postscript of gratitude that is a common thread in the letters: “We all appreciate what Manheim is doing for us and are proud to call it our hometown. A letter penned by William G. Flood Jr. of Manheim on Nov. 10, 1944, relayed his serendipitous meeting in a hospital in England with an unnamed nurse who also hailed from Manheim. “During my short trip I have traveled around quite a bit, and met many people, but never have I come in contact with any who can equal or come near equaling the people of Manheim, they are tops, states Flood’s letter, found on page 35 of Deemer’s book. Lists of those known from the Manheim area who were killed or wounded in action in World War II are also included in the publication, as well as brief summaries of historical events throughout the era. Additional photographs, advertisements, and news clippings tell a fascinating story of how Manheim fared at home and abroad in World War II. Aside from the infamous war bonds and victory gardens of World War II, tin can
collections and scrap metal drives in Market Square were other ways people of Manheim strived to do their part for Uncle Sam. Deemer himself recalls participating in a milkweed pod drive, riding his bicycle around the area with other children to gather the pods that were then donated for making life preservers for the Navy. Finally, scenes from Manheim’s own Victory Parade on Nov. 10, 1945, give everyone an important look at what Deemer - who was 10 at the time - called an unforgettable night. Deemer said that his only regret is having not completed a book on this subject matter sooner. “I wish I had done it first - 10 years ago, while many of (the veterans) were still here to receive the honor due to them, remarked Deemer. “A lot of the veterans I knew personally have passed away in the past few years. Deemer has published six prior books

Gardening from pg 1 and it just might produce a harvest that is both valuable and delicious. “Planting vegetables can be fun and rewarding for the whole family,” pointed out Dan Funk, owner of Funk’s Riverview Greenhouses in Washington Boro. “Some spring vegetables such as lettuce, radishes, and spinach can be planted in April and harvested in May. You can follow up with a second planting in the same soil with another crop such as tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants that will be ready to enjoy later in July,” Funk elaborated. Isolation and stress can be countered by an intentional effort to focus on something positive, and many have found such
value in horticulture. “Flowers around the house can brighten your spirit after being inside during this time,” added Funk, suggesting that some area residents may like to try their hand at ornamental plants. For those who wish to add a pop of floral color outdoors but may not have ample yard space, window boxes are one way to dress up a home’s exterior. If produce is the goal, Funk advised
picking a location with ample sunlight. “Too much shade and you will just get plant growth without getting any edible product,” Funk advised. For those who are new to gardening, just getting started can be an intimidating endeavor. Or perhaps space is at a premium, causing some to give up before they even begin. However, area experts can provide valuable insight to these issues. More than happy to provide guidance, Norma Zimmerman from Zimmerman’s Greenhouse of Ephrata supplied ideas for
someone hoping to grow vegetables but lacking yard space. “Healthy homegrown vegetables (can be grown) from your own garden or patio,” she encouraged. “Grape or cherry tomatoes are the easiest tomato to grow for new gardeners, and herbs are also easy to grow in containers.” For the past six years, Community Bible Church in Marietta has offered a creative solution for those who do not have space for a garden but would like to develop a green thumb, offering rototilled plots to See Gardening pg 6

Taking care of weeds before they get out of control and seeking advice from a seasoned gardener will provide a head start for success. “The Lord has a lot of life lessons to teach us from plants, and the best
