A Year In The Life Of Seniors valeen Weinhold, a 96-yearold resident of Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community in Manheim, summed up the resilience of senior citizens this past year when she imparted the lesson she’s learned from the pandemic: “Lean on the Lord and go to your knees. … This, too, shall pass.”

E

While COVID-19 has affected all segments of the population, the impact has been particularly hard on seniors like Evaleen, who have dealt with fear, isolation and loneliness as the pandemic has closed retirement communities to the public. With restrictions being lifted, seniors at Mount Hope reflected on this past year - and how community members can help support the mission of the retirement community. Before she came to Mount Hope, Evaleen worked as a registered nurse and raised four children with her husband, Ernest, who passed away in 2015. When the pandemic hit, she learned to cope without visits from her children and grandchildren. “I just didn’t feel as free,” she recalled. “I kept thinking, ‘This, too, will be conquered,’ ... The Lord gives me what I can bear and the wherewithal to bear it if I need to.” While

When the pandemic prompted the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce to cancel its annual Rock-N-Glow 5K, Chamber members regrouped and came up with an alternative. The Kids’ Color Fun Run will be held on Saturday, May 15, at Manheim Central Middle School, 261 White Oak Road. The festivities will kick off at 4 p.m., and the race will run from 7 to 8 p.m. See Fun Run pg 2

Make-A-Wish Truck Convoy Scheduled For Mother’s Day

The Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will run through Manheim and Mount Joy on Sunday, May 9. Each star on the Wish Angel trailer represents a Wish child in the area who has passed away in the 32 years of the event.

The Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will roll through town on Sunday, May 9. This year’s 100-truck convoy will leave from the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction at 1:30 p.m. and will run a route from Manheim through Mount Joy. “The auto auction will not be open to the public, and we won’t be having the carnival we usually have, but there are still several ways for people to participate,” said Terry

her family could no longer come and sit on her bed with her, they could talk to her on a phone from outside her window. For 90-year-old Barbara Mayo, the pandemic not only brought isolation from family members, but it also forced a separation between Barbara and her husband of 67 years, Devere. After having a stroke, Devere went to a rehab facility, but soon Barbara found she couldn’t visit him due to restrictions. “It was terrible,” she said, noting that she could only see Devere through a window. “He was very, very lonely and we watched (him) simply deteriorate. I felt like my world was collapsing.” Barbara prayed that an opportunity would open for the couple to move somewhere together, and she soon learned about Mount Hope, which focuses on keeping couples together if at all possible. Devere and Barbara spent five months together at Mount Hope before he passed away in January. Barbara wasn’t sure how she’d get through the days without

“We’re not able to do our traditional Rock-N-Glow 5K because we’re still limiting crowd size for events, but this is a way for us to bring kids out for a little bit of fun outside,” said Kristie Schmid, executive director of the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce. Participants are encouraged to wear a white Tshirt for the race. “We have powdered colors that will be sprayed on them throughout the race. The color shows up really nice on the white shirt,” Schmid explained. “It’s completely washable, so parents don’t have to worry about that. … We will also have white masks available for kids to wear if they want to for the race.”

children to sign up will receive a free pair of white sunglasses to wear during the race. Schmid said the Chamber hopes to bring back the Rock-N-Glow next year, but until then, she noted that the Kids’ Color Fun Run should be a good time. “It’s going to be a great opportunity for the kids who have been cooped up all winter to come

After a year off in observance of COVID-19 restrictions and concern for the safety of local residents, the St. Luke’s United Church of Christ (UCC) Spring Thing Bazaar will return in May. This year’s event will be a two-day festival, which combines a chicken barbecue with a yard sale, a vendor sale, haircuts, an activity for children, and food. The 2021 Spring Thing will be held on Friday, May 14, and

Saturday, May 15, at the church, 222 N. Broad St., Lititz. On May 14, the event will open at 8 a.m., and on May 15, it will run from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Up to 40 yard sale, craft, and home business vendors will line the church parking lot, with a car parked between each vendor space. Granny’s Attic, which will feature donated items, will be open throughout the event. “(Granny’s Attic) is a flea market,” said pastor James Haun. Jane Markert, who is co-chairing this

a lot of fun stuff to bid on,” Finch said. “Some of the Wish children create items like birdhouses or pictures or sculptures, and those always do really well.” People are invited to cheer the convoy along the route, which can be found at https://tinyurl.com/u8ddcvrw. “There’s great viewing at LCBC Manheim campus, where they have a huge parking lot,” Finch recommended. “There’s also options to watch at the Country Table and along Main Street in Mount Joy.” The convoy committee is working on ways to include Wish children in the convoy. “Because our Wish children can’t be in public right now, we’re working on getting Wish kids on video chat to talk to the drivers,” Finch explained. “Some of them have been riding with the same driver for years, and they really feel a connection.” This is the second time the event will begin at the Manheim

Auto Auction. Last year’s event was a scaled-down convoy of 30 drivers. “We are thrilled to be partnering with the Mother’s Day Make-A-Wish Truck Convoy for our second year,” said Joey Hughes, vice president/general manager of the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction. “The Mother’s Day Make-A-Wish Truck Convoy is such an important fundraising event, and our team at Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction is so honored to host it at our location.” Money raised by the convoy helps to grant wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. “The convoy and the events occurring with it help fund 75% of the wishes in the Susquehanna Valley,” Finch noted, adding that the event committee has a goal of raising $300,000. “In addition to coming out on the day of the event, you can visit wishconvoy.org to see all of our drivers who are fundraising and to donate to any driver you’d like to.”

Bazaar from pg 2 Haun, who is a certified barber, will give haircuts, along with church member Mary Kay Garner, who is a licensed hairdresser. Each year, the two team up to provide cuts and trims by donation during the event. Live music at the bazaar will be provided by Clyde Spangler, who will play his electric guitar. Organizers reported that Spangler is known for playing upbeat Christian music. Some of the funds raised by the Spring Thing are used to help members of the community. This year, organizers will donate a percentage either to a family in need or to a local organization. Markert noted that to keep the event safe for all who attend, visitors are asked to wear masks and practice social distancing.

Manheim Community Library To Hold Book Sale

“THE ORIGINAL HACKMAN”

The Friends of the Manheim Community Library will hold their annual spring book sale at the Manheim Farm Show Exhibition Hall, 502 Adele Ave. The sale will take place on Thursday and Friday, May 6 and 7, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturday, May 8, from 9 a.m. to noon. Saturday’s sale will be a bag sale, with special prices for filling one or two bags with books. Members of the Friends are invited to a preview night on Wednesday, May 5, from 4 to 6 p.m. Visitors may join the Friends of the Library at the door. “There is always a huge selection of high-quality hardcovers,” said Stacey Gibble Barrick, president of the Friends. “We get a lot of onetime-read books and a lot of current books. We get a lot of donations because we have voracious readers in Manheim, and we’re grateful for that.” The sale will also include paperbacks, cookbooks, travel and history books, as well as a children’s area. “We usually end up setting up chairs with boxes of books on them in the

children’s section, because we run out of table room,” Barrick stated. The Friends of the Manheim Community Library hold two book sales a year, and the money raised helps fund the library’s children’s Summer Reading Program, among other projects. “We usually pay for speakers or special summer programs,” Barrick explained, noting that the library has recently expanded programming for middle school-age students as well as more adult programming. “They’ve been having some really neat programs at the library, and we help provide funding for that.” Proceeds also help the Friends purchase additional books for the library and have even funded hiring extra staff members for the library. Barrick, who founded the Manheim Friends group in 2013, said memberships bring in up to $30,000 a year for the library, providing nearly 20% of the library’s annual budget. “Friends memberships are literally our lifeblood,” she noted. “I can’t tell you how many older people in our community, who haven’t been to the library for decades, will

support us with a membership. They want to support a local, community library.” The Friends group also works to raise awareness and appreciation for the library’s resources and services as well as advocate for library services and amenities, Barrick said. “It’s imperative that we make sure the library offers a full range of educational opportunities within the walls of the building,” she said. “We are about so much more than just books. We offer computer access, Wi-Fi access, special programming and much more.”

The organization’s end goal is to empower people to feel confident and capable enough to maintain their own safe and stable housing. “Our organization is unique in that we can help people with stable housing regardless of where they are in their journey,” stated GSS development and communications coordinator Shadoe Caprell. “A lot of times, people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness can’t receive assistance from agencies unless they reach the definition of homelessness. We can fill in the cracks.” Since July 2020, GSS has served nearly 400 men, women, and children through its emergency shelter, residential housing, and

Tied at 5-5 in the bottom of the sixth, Manheim regained the lead on back-to-back doubles by Dylan Yoder and Riley McGallicher, scoring Cam Eberly, who doubled, and Yoder to make it 7-5. The Barons are now 12-0 overall and 8-0 in Section Three. Central took a 4-3 lead, as Eberly walked and eventually scored on a wild pitch. They made it 5-3 on a Mason Weaver’s RBI double, scoring Malakai Zilinski, who singled. Eberly was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and Drew Mylin was 2-for-3 with his first varsity home run. Colton Book, who had two RBIs, got the start on the mound and pitched five innings. Logan Shull got his first varsity win in relief. The Barons beat Garden Spot 174 last Monday at Baron Fields. MC had eight hits and overcame five errors in the contest. Offensively, Wettig went 2-for-4 with a double, Damon was 2-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and 2 RBIs. Brianna Mylin had a triple and a walk and Brynn Lehman had a double and 2 RBIs. Central earned its third win and improved its record to 7-6 with a 17-6 victory over Cocalico last Wednesday. Mickey Lauver had a big game, going 4-for-5 with a home run and 3 RBIs. Wettig was 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs. Damon was 2-for-5 with 3 RBIs, Moyer was 2-for-5 with an RBI and Mylin was 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs. Central swung the bats well to start, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and led 40 after two innings. Then the Barons were a little flat and let the Eagles back into the game. Cocalico scored four in the bottom of the third and two more in fourth to make it 7-6 Barons, but Manheim refocused and erupted for 10 runs in the sixth to end the game early. “It is one of those things where they jump out to a big lead and then they are trying to make things happen even more; they want to hit it even further, get bigger hits,” VanBlargan said. “We’ve been trying to rein that back. When they can calm down and just start getting hits and putting good balls into play, they play well.”

Benefit Auction from pg 9 trips for miniature golf or ice cream. A children’s tent will feature a Mother’s Day craft station and games. On Friday night, an inflatable obstacle course will be set up for children, and a silent auction will be held in the gym. In addition to the auction items, the event will feature a pig roast on Friday night and a chicken barbecue on Saturday. Additional food options will include the Mount Joy Rotary french fry truck, Dutch Country Soft Pretzels, hot dogs, pulled pork sandwiches and Gene Wenger’s Meats’ hamburgers, along with baked goods and strawberry pies. Proceeds from the auction help cover tuition costs and pay for maintenance projects at the school. “We use the money toward offsetting the cost of private education so we can keep our tuition down,” Heisey explained, adding that in 2018 and 2019, the auction raised $110,000 each year, and she’d like to meet that goal this year. Last year’s auction was canceled due to the pandemic. “It’s great to be able to see other people and share the enthusiasm of the students and alumni who come back every year to see the exciting things we’re doing at Kraybill,” Heisey remarked. “It’s just a great community event.” For more information on the auction, including a schedule of events, visit www.kraybillauction.com.
