An Empowering Community For Women BY CATHY MOLITORIS
eather Lindsey will be the first one to tell you her life hasn’t been easy, but instead of wallowing in self-pity, she is working hard to help others. “I have a heart for women,” she stated. “I’ve had a hard life, a hard upbringing. You name it, I’ve been through it. But, one day, God laid this idea on my heart.” That idea was to create 4C, a women’s ministry that meets in Columbia and Manheim. The mission of 4C is to empower women and provide a sense of community, open conversation, creative

arts and worship. The “C’s” stand for conversation, coloring, coffee and Christ, and the group’s tagline is “4 Christ. Thru Christ.” The group meets from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on the second, third and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 237 Locust St., Columbia, and from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays at Teen Central, 15 S. Wolf St., Manheim. “You walk in the door where you are, and we meet you where you are,” Lindsey said. “We want to minister to women wherever they are in their lives and whatever they are going through, and we want to

give them an opportunity to meet new friends.” The second Tuesday and Wednesday of each month focus on coloring and conversation, Lindsey noted, adding, “It’s very low-key. We just talk and share whatever’s on our hearts.” On the third Tuesday in Columbia and the fourth Wednesday in Manheim, the group spends time doing crafts. “Then on our fourth Tuesday in Columbia, it’s our game night, and that’s usually just a hysterical night of fun,” Lindsey stated. Lindsey started her ministry in Columbia three years ago and launched the Manheim program in January 2020. She noted that 4C is faith-based, but “not faith pushed,” and is open to any women. “We don’t usually have specific topics we’ll discuss at a meeting, but we do try to stay positive and within our limits of helping,” she stated. “If there are resources or tools these ladies need beyond what we can offer, we get them help.” When she’s not ministering to women, Lindsey can be found at Creative Inspirationz, a gallery she owns located at 23 N. Main St., Manheim. “I’m the major artist on site,” she explained. “The goal of my gallery is to make art for workingclass people. Hardworking people deserve fine art in their homes, not just prints but originals, and it shouldn’t have to take your entire paycheck to get it.” Lindsey said she sees great things in store for 4C as the program continues to thrive. “We’re working to build women up and make them stronger, which in turn is building up our community,” she stated. “We are so quick to tear each other down, and it can be so hard to build each other up, but we are trying to change that. We are empowering women to be the best God wants them to be.” For more information on 4C or Creative Inspirationz, visit www.artbyheatherlindsey.com or search for “4C Ministry” on Facebook.

Kids’ Color Fun Run Scheduled BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When the pandemic prompted the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce to cancel its annual Rock-N-Glow 5K, Chamber members regrouped and came up with an alternative. The Kids’ Color Fun Run will be held on Saturday, May 15, at Manheim Central Middle School, 261 White Oak Road. The festivities will kick off at 4 p.m., and the race will run from 7 to 8 p.m. “We’re not able to do our traditional Rock-N-Glow 5K because we’re still limiting crowd size for events, but this is a way for us to bring kids out for a little bit of fun outside,” said Kristie Schmid,
executive director of the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce. Participants are encouraged to wear a white T-shirt for the race. “We have powdered colors that will be sprayed on them throughout the race. The color shows up really nice on the white shirt,” Schmid explained. “It’s completely washable, so parents don’t have to worry about that. … We will also have white masks available for kids to wear if they want to for the race.” The Kids’ Color Fun Run is open to children ages 5 through 14. The racers will be broken into two heats by age based upon the number of registrants. The course is approximately six-tenths of a mile. See Fun Run pg 3
Participants are invited to wear a white T-shirt for the Kids’ Color Fun Run, hosted by the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce.

you. Chances are, every student at Kraybill can tell you something specific about gardening thanks to a collaboration between parent volunteers, teachers and The Edible Classroom, a Washington Boro-based organization. Kraybill installed a school garden earlier this year, and every day students get outside to get their hands dirty while learning. The Kraybill garden came together after a
chance meeting between Grace Julian, who runs The Edible Classroom with Beth Horst, and a parent at Kraybill. They started talking about gardening, and the parent mentioned that Kraybill would love to have a garden. It just so happened that The Edible Classroom was looking for a space to create a community garden, since its other spaces in the county are school-specific. Although this garden is located at Kraybill, it will be the site of a summer camp open to the community this summer. Kraybill principal MJ Smith loved the idea of a school garden, and soon parent volunteer Aja Sides was on board. It turned out both Julian and Sides are certified Penn State Extension Master Gardeners, and they quickly bonded over their shared love of plants. Sides’ husband built raised garden beds in front of the school; families donated watering cans, hoses and tools; and within weeks, the garden was ready for students. “When this whole idea first started, I wasn’t quite sure how it was going to go, but everything fell right into place,” Sides remarked. “We’ve had no hiccups. That just signals that this garden was meant to be.” Led by The Edible Class-

room staff, students will be planting various crops including radishes, peas, beets, kale, tomatoes, corn, peppers and squash. Pollinator gardens will be planted at the corners of the garden to attract bees and butterflies. For seventh-grader Nathan Shertzer, the garden offers a chance to do something he really loves. “It’s fun to watch the plants grow and to taste the food (we harvest),” he said, adding that he hopes to continue to help with the garden over the summer. Abby Keller, a sixth-grader, noted that gardening makes her happy. “I like the daily routine. I like planting, watering, watching the seeds grow into plants and then enjoying the product,” she stated. The garden is providing students with more than meets the eye. “They are experiencing gardening as much more than just a little seed,” Sides remarked. “Every person should have the opportunity to see the positive effects of a garden, to get their hands dirty and to see what comes out of your hard work.” As principal, Smith is excited to see all the ways the garden is impacting her students. “The garden is providing an opportunity to promote healthy eating, but it’s also providing hands-on science,” she shared. Students will enjoy the rewards of their efforts when they harvest the early produce later this month and have an opportunity to taste a salad made from what they planted. “There is something very healing about being outside, digging in the dirt,” Smith said. “It’s a wonderful way to help our kids connect to the Earth.” The Edible Classroom will hold a summer camp at the Kraybill garden, 598 Kraybill Church Road, Mount Joy, on Monday, July 5, through Friday, July 9, from 9 a.m. to noon. For more information on the camp or on The Edible Classroom, visit www.the edibleclassroom.org.

assist people in owning and operating their own farms and ranches, participating in agricultural programs, and becoming integral parts of the agricultural community. FSA reserves a portion of its loan funds each year for targeted underserved groups. USDA defines a targeted underserved farmer as one of a group whose members have been subjected to racial, ethnic, or gender prejudice because of their identity as members of the group without regard to their individual qualities. For purposes of this program, targeted underserved groups are women, African Americans, Native Americans and Alaskan Natives, Hispanics, and Asians and Pacific Islanders. Both direct loans and down payment loans are available. Direct loans are made to applicants by FSA and include both farm operating and farm ownership loans. Repayment terms for direct operating loans depend on the collateral securing the loan; loans usually run from one to seven years, but can be as long as 40 years. The down payment
loan program requires the applicant to provide a minimum down payment of 5% in cash, and there is a limit on the monetary amount of the loan. The loan term may not exceed 20 years. A variety of projects may be funded through farm ownership and farm operating loans, such as purchasing or enlarging a farm, erecting or improving buildings, purchasing livestock or equipment, refinancing debts, and securing medical care. Individuals, partnerships, joint operations, corporations, and cooperatives primarily and directly engaged in farming and ranching on family-size operations may apply. A family-size farm is considered to be one that a family can operate and manage itself. Guaranteed loans also may be made for ownership or operating purposes and may be made by any lending institution subject to federal or state supervision. For full details, contact the local FSA Office at 405 W. Market St., Middleburg, PA 17842 or 570-837-0007.
A disc jockey will be onsite to play music throughout the event. “We’ll have some yard games for kids to play before the race. We’ll have a sprinkler for them to run through,” Schmid stated. “ We’ll also have food trucks on-site for people to purchase a snack or dinner.” Food trucks include TriCounty Barbecue Catering, Papa Sneaux shaved ice and Philly Pretzel Factory. Participants will receive goodie bags at the event, and the first 100 children to sign up will receive a free pair of white sunglasses to wear during the race. Schmid said the Chamber

Spring Thing Bazaar Scheduled BY ANN MEAD ASH
After a year off in observance of COVID-19 restrictions and concern for the safety of local residents, the St. Luke’s United Church of Christ (UCC) Spring Thing Bazaar will return in May. This year’s event will be a two-day festival, which combines a chicken barbecue with a yard sale, a vendor sale, haircuts, an activity for children, and food. The 2021 Spring Thing will be held on Friday, May 14, and Saturday, May 15, at the Pawsome Pets specialty publication will be mailed to 81,000 Lancaster County homes.

church, 222 N. Broad St., Lititz. On May 14, the event will open at 8 a.m., and on May 15, it will run from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Up to 40 yard sale, craft, and home business vendors will line the church parking lot, with a car parked between each vendor space. Granny’s Attic, which will feature donated items, will be open throughout the event. “(Granny’s Attic) is a flea market,” said pastor James Haun. Jane Markert, who is cochairing this year’s bazaar with Amy Adams, noted that Granny’s Attic will feature some gently used clothing. On May 14, beverages and hot dogs will be offered for sale, and on May 15, chicken barbecue dinners, which will include a half-chicken, a baked potato with butter, applesauce, and chips or pretzels, will be available. Tickets for the barbecue meal may be purchased in advance at the church office and on Saturday until sold out. Readers who have questions about the tickets or the bazaar may call the office at 717-626-7100. The Spring Thing Café will give visitors a place to sit and eat. Pretzels for the event will be provided by Lititz Mayor Tim
Snyder, and chips will be provided by Diffenbach’s. A coloring contest for children, to be held only on May 15, is being organized by church member Timmy Otter. Hay rides will be offered on May 15 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Haun, who is a certified barber, will give haircuts, along with church member Mary Kay Garner, who is a licensed hairdresser. Each year, the two team up to provide cuts and trims by donation during the event. Live music at the bazaar will
be provided by Clyde Spangler, who will play his electric guitar. Organizers reported that Spangler is known for playing upbeat Christian music. Some of the funds raised by the Spring Thing are used to help members of the community. This year, organizers will donate a percentage either to a family in need or to a local organization. Markert noted that to keep the event safe for all who attend, visitors are asked to wear masks and practice social distancing.
Pastor James Haun (left) and Jane Markert are looking forward to holding the Spring Thing Bazaar at St. Luke’s Church, Lititz, on May 14 and 15.

Cadence Getz won the triple jump for Manheim. On the boys’ side, Manheim suffered its first loss in Section Two, 81-69, against L-S. The Barons were aiming for their first section title since 2017. In this close meet, the Pioneers held an advantage in distance running, outscoring the Barons 31-1. The Pioneers ran wild in the 800, 1600, 3200 and 4x400 relay. L-S is now in first place in the section. Trying to counter the Pioneers’ athletes, Barons’ coach Ryan Kennedy spread his multitalented athletes out, attempting to gain more second and third place finishes, but it wasn’t enough. Zach Witmer (triple and high jumps) and Landon Watson (shot put and discus) were Central’s only double winners. Caleb Sick won the pole vault and Kade Kargarise won the javelin. Nate Reed captured the 300 hurdles. TENNIS Tyler Snavely made a great run in singles tennis. The firstyear player lost to No.1 seed Evan Stehman, of Donegal, in the Flight Three finals at Conestoga Valley last Monday. The senior lost 6-3, 6-1.
Snavely played well, dropping just five games in two matches last Saturday at McCaskey, after winning the opening round Friday against Cocalico’s Matt Laudenslager, 6-0, 6-0. Snavely beat No. 2 seed Wade Stoltzfus, of Pequea Valley, in the second round, 6-0, 6-1. He beat Nick Keener, of Manheim Township, 6-3, 6-1 in the semifinals. Andrew Rajaratnam beat Penn Manor’s Maxwell Davis in a crucial matchup for fifth place
in No. 1 singles last Monday. The 6-0, 6-0 win gave Rajaratnam the automatic berth for districts. Rajaratnam and Snavely reached the semifinals in Flight 1 doubles before losing to the Penn Manor. The MC twosome qualified for districts. Manheim’s Flight 2 doubles tandem of David Graff and Ben Ginder also bowed out of the tournament in the semifinal round. They will not, however, be advancing to district play.

“Our club is a neat thing,” said Lori Stahl of the Lancaster County Beekeepers Society. “We have been around since the mid-1800s.” Stahl noted that at one time the organization changed its name to the Lancaster Honey Producers, but in the early 2000s, it was restored to the original name. “It has always been about beekeepers mentoring new beekeepers and being advocates for the honeybees,” she explained. To help give beginning beekeepers a sweet start, the organization normally holds a one-day workshop in late January or early February. According to Stahl, past events attracted about 100 attendees, with another 100 fledgling beekeepers on a waiting list. This year’s event was canceled due to COVID19 restrictions, but Stahl said that the organization hopes to hold the 2022 event. Another service the organization offers is swarm retrieval. Swarms occur when a hive divides itself. “The queen and a bunch of the bees leave,” said Stahl. “(Bees) swarm anywhere between April and October, but the

The website also offers informational documents under the “Members” tab, including an article on designing a garden for pollinators. Stahl recommends that gardeners plant flowers that bloom in February, March, early April, August, September, October, and November. “When it’s the end of April, bees can find nectar and pollen everywhere,” she explained. She also encourages allowing some clover, violets, and even dandelions in the green landscape of the lawn to create pollinator
