Manheim Girl Scout Distributes Hundreds Of Homemade Masks By Francine Fulton
What started out as an effort to make masks to earn a Girl Scout Gold Award has evolved into an extended community service projects for Manheim teenager Ansley Ryan. As of late April, Ansley has handmade 658 masks, which she has given out free of charge to friends and neighbors. “We will keep doing them because there is a great need in the community,” Ansley said. Ansley, 16, the daughter of Timothy and Gayle Ryan, has been making masks since early March, when it was recommended that people wear face coverings to prevent the spread of
COVID-19. She places the masks outside her home in a basket, offering them free to passersby. With each homemade mask, which is sealed in a plastic bag, Ansley provides an inspiring message, along with a printout describing how to make a mask and to clean and care for it. “The same weekend that they issued the (stay-at-home) order we put up a stand at the end of our driveway,” she said. “We put out a bunch every day and they go every day.” Ansley makes the masks using a pattern she and her mom found online. “We use a pattern from a YouTube video. We saw a whole bunch (of See Girl Scout pg 3

PA Family Travel Fair Goes Virtual
By Ann Mead Ash
By Ann Mead Ash
Under normal circumstances, Girls on the Run (GOTR) is a 10-week in-person program that couples physical activity with specific lessons to help develop competency in areas related to social, psychological, and physical development for girls in third through eighth grades. The GOTR curriculum is designed to promote good choices for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. However, since midMarch, the 1,400 girls in Lancaster and Lebanon counties who were to take part in GOTR this spring have not been living in normal circumstances.
When Wendy Royal, editor of Where & When Pennsylvania and organizer of the third PA Family Travel Fair, realized that the 2020 fair, which was scheduled for April 18, would have to be canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, she was heartbroken for the more than 50 exhibitors. When she learned that all of them were committed to doing the 2021 event, she wanted to do something to help them. On April 21, Royal finalized plans to take the fair virtual starting during National Travel and Tourism Week, which was See PA Family Travel Fair pg 2

Manheim Girl Scout Ansley Ryan has made more than 650 masks, which she has given out free of charge to neighbors and friends.
DelGrosso’s Amusement Park and Laguna Splash and the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon will be among the many destinations highlighted during the virtual PA Family Travel Fair, which can be accessed using the QR code found with this article or by visiting www.whereandwhen.com/virtual-pa-family-travel-fair.

Since they are not attending school due to COVID-19 restrictions, they are not able to meet with their coaches and teams regularly after school. GOTR has responded to this situation with two new virtual lessons released each Tuesday as part of the GOTR At Home See GOTR pg 3

held from May 3 to 9. The virtual PA Family Travel Fair launched on May 4 and will continue through Saturday, May 30. The virtual fair can be accessed at www.whereandwhen.com/virtual-pa-family-travel-fair or by using the QR code found with this article. Where & When Pennsylvania may also be found by searching for “ Where & When Pennsylvania” on Facebook or at @whereandwhenpa on Instagram. “Every day, we will feature a different exhibitor,” said Royal. “Each one of them will take over our social media for a day.” The first organization to take over Where & When’s social media was the Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau, which is spotlighting a giveaway in conjunction with the fair consisting of a weekend kayaking getaway for four. “The package includes two nights lodging, a kayaking trip, and $200 toward meals,” said Royal, who noted that a basket of Endless Mountains products will be included. Visitors to the virtual travel fair may enter to win the package at the website. The winner will be chosen in a random drawing by Friday, June 5. Lining up to take over the Where & When social media are a mix of visitors’ bureaus, his-
toric attractions, amusement parks, museums, and all-inclusive resorts. Among them are the Pennsylvania Campground Owners Association, the Nature Inn at Bald Eagle, Pennsylvania Great Outdoors, Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine, DelGrosso’s Amusement Park and Laguna Splash, and Refreshing Mountain Retreat and Adventure Center. Fort Roberdeau in Altoona will also have a day manning the social media accounts. Virtual tours of areas will be available on some days as well. “We have 18 different destination marketing organizations involved,” noted Royal. “Some of those will include virtual tour links for their areas.” Among the destination marketing areas that will be part of the virtual fair are the Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau and The Happy Valley Adventure Bureau. One of the exciting aspects of the travel fair is that the exhibitors bring information about interesting and beautiful parts of Pennsylvania to those who attend. The virtual fair can accomplish that goal by putting the spotlight on special attractions in different areas of the state. “Susquehanna, Wyoming, and Sullivan counties are for people who really like to get
away to open spaces,” noted Royal. “Worlds End State Park (in Sullivan County) is really pretty, and in Franklin County, there are beautiful vistas.” Royal added that the town of New Castle in Lawrence County is considered the fireworks capital of America because it is the home of two fireworks enterprises that trace their origins to the mid-1800s. The county is also home to a craft burger trail. Royal said that through the virtual fair, she is encouraging involvement by the whole family, including the youngest members. “We will have children’s activity pages, and there’s a downloadable crossword puzzle and some coloring pages,” Royal pointed out. “I am encouraging parents of tweens and teens to involve those children in their travel plans (as well).”
The Lancaster County Board of Elections is in need of poll workers for the general primary election on Tuesday, June 2. Many of its usual poll workers are considered in the high-risk group and have expressed concern about working in the polls due to coronavirus. Full-day judges of election and inspectors of election are especially needed. Clerks are welcome. The board is presently looking for roles to be filled in Lancaster city, East Cocalico Township, East Donegal, Lancaster Township, Manheim Township, Millersville, Strasburg Borough, West Hempfield Township, and West Lampeter Township. Poll workers do not need to live in the precinct where they work. Online poll worker training is provided, and there is financial compensation. Those who are registered to vote in Lancaster County or are 17 years old with parental permission may contact April Wefler at 717-299-8298 or awefler@co.lancaster.pa.us. For further details on election duties, readers may view the poll worker fact sheet at www.co.lancaster.pa.us/302 /Poll-Workers.

Interested individuals may register at www.gotrlancaster.org/ 5k-detail. #GOTRGotYourBack is an effort that GOTR has undertaken to engage the broader community during this time. “It’s our social media piece, which is all about planting positive messages in the homes of anyone who follows us,” said GOTR Lancaster executive director Carrie Johnson. “There are challenges (to complete) … and encouraging words. It’s all about bringing our mission to life.” Johnson noted that the organization feels it is especially important to spread a message of kindness. “Just as our 5K is like opening a bottle of sunshine, that’s what we want to be able to do during this time,” said Johnson.

curriculum. The first lesson, which was released the week of March 16, is called “ We Are Unique; We Are Similar.” The lessons can be completed by a girl alone, but they are designed for all household members. “This is a family, at-home, shared experience,” said GOTR Lancaster program director Jennifer West. “We want to lift up the community and bring everyone together to share in the GOTR experience.” Each lesson includes a main concept called a big idea and an explanation of why that idea matters. Games and discussion questions based on ways to explore the theme are included, along with physical activities. “What we have are called Movement Mixes,” explained West, who said that suggestions might include skipping, running in place, or doing star jumps for a certain amount of time. “Not everybody can get outside (to exercise),” West explained. “(The lessons) are encouraging whatever activity you can do at home.” West said that the lessons are sent via email and text to all the families and coaches each week. “We encourage the coaches to reach out to the families and see how the girls are enjoying the lessons and keep them involved in whatever capacity they can,” said West, who noted that she realizes many of the coaches, who are often teachers or parents of the girls who take part, are still working at some level. “(We appreciate) whatever they can do,” said West. Contingent on state regulations, the graduation ceremony that was slated for Friday, May 29, may be held outside in July. “Our parents and graduates want it to be as traditional as possible but also realistic,” said Bernhardt. “They don’t want a virtual graduation.” He noted, “We will have a few elements that are different but awesome. We have some really creative ideas to make it something that no other class has ever experienced.”

Bernhardt said that LCS also hopes to reschedule the spring musical, “Willy Wonka,” for a fall date if restrictions are lifted. Bernhardt noted that seniors who had parts in the show will be at college at that time, but the school has a goal of working around seniors’ schedules to bring them home for the presentation. Cadwalader is currently taking prospective students and their families on virtual tours of the building. “ We had a virtual kindergarten day, and we also had a virtual preview day for any family that has shown interest,” she said, adding that video meetings with school principals have also been held. For preschoolers whose parents are considering LCS, a teacher read a story and asked students to draw a picture to send to her. Readers who would like to know more about LCS may visit www.lititzchristian.net, search for “Lititz Christian School” on Facebook, or find @lititzchristian on Instagram.

On March 12, Rick Bernhardt, senior administrator of Lititz Christian School (LCS), breathed a sigh of relief. The school had sent a group of senior students and teachers as chaperones to Guatemala, and on March 12, the day before Gov. Tom Wolf announced that schools were closing due to the COVID-19 crisis, that delegation landed in Newark, N.J. “God was so good; He brought them back safely,” said Bernhardt. Bernhardt and the administration and teachers at LCS were not very surprised the next day when they learned that schools would be closing; in fact, they had spent the week of March 9 through 13 preparing for such an announcement. “The week before schools were canceled, we brought in substitutes and we trained all our staff members to do online teaching so that Monday (March 16), we were up and
running,” explained Bernhardt, who noted that prior to that time, LCS was not utilizing online learning. “It speaks so highly of these teachers,” he said. “We were overwhelmed with how the faculty and staff adapted.” With LCS students resuming classes so quickly after school was closed, Bernhardt anticipates the school will finish the academic year in early June. “We are running the full year,” noted Bernhardt. “We are committed to a rigorous education. We are committed to doing this well and finishing strong.” The LCS campus, 501 W. Lincoln Ave., Lititz, includes a kindergarten-through-12thgrade school of 232 students and an Early Learning Center (ELC) with 195 students. About 86 faculty and staff members work onsite. Four administrators, in addition to Bernhardt, oversee the programs: elementary and middle school principal Allyson Harmon, high school principal Ryan McCracken, ELC director Jamie Esbenshade, and ELC assistant director Jess Daugherty. Niki Cadwalader serves as admissions director. ELC teachers are volunteering their time to offer young students online story times until the center is allowed to reopen per state regulations. In addition to the focus on academics, the school wants to maintain a social element. Cadwalader began utilizing the phrase “Let’s Stay Connected” to encourage LCS families to keep in touch during the stay-at-home period. “As a parent, I feared people would feel disconnected,” said Cadwalader, whose daughter is a junior at LCS. “We started using social media so people didn’t feel
transferred to July 24. The needs of Landis ADS clients and its families have not decreased during this mandatory closure. Although ADS clients are staying safe by staying home, this puts tremendous pressure on their caregivers, especially those who are caring for loved ones with memory loss. It is important to be prepared for their return when Landis ADS is permitted to open. The registration deadline for sponsors and golfers is Friday, July 10. For more information about the event, readers may visit https://landisadultday .org/golf/ or contact Amy Henriques at 717-381-3584. If it becomes necessary to cancel the benefit golf outing, Landis ADS will consider registration or sponsorship as a charitable donation. Those who prefer that their contribution be handled differently may email Henriques at ahenriques@landis.org. All eligible sponsors are listed on the website, and their ads will be in the golf booklet. The commitment deadline for all sponsorships is now July 10 in order to be included in the golf booklet.

Organizations Receive Funding Industry Partnerships (IP), which address the workforce, economic development, and educational needs of regional industries through an employer-led and demand-driven approach. Over the past year, the Southcentral Pennsylvania Manufacturing Next Gen Industry Partnership of regional manufacturing leaders created action teams that focused on the most urgent needs identified by the industry. Those include promoting manufacturing careers to grow the future workforce, improving training opportunities for middle-skill and technical occupations, and facilitating businessto-business connections to exchange best practices. The partnership is facilitated by The Manufacturers’ Association which works with regional organizations to support the employers’ initiatives, which include SCPa Works, the regional workforce development board; the Southcentral Pennsylvania Partnership for Regional Economic Performance; and the educational partners in southcentral Pennsylvania. The
private sector-driven initiative is led by two employer co-champions, Weldon Solutions, a manufacturer of grinding machines and robotic integration, and Phoenix Contact, a global leader in electronic connectors. The Manufacturers’ Association is a multi-county trade association serving as an advocate and partner for manufacturing and logistics in southcentral Pennsylvania and northcentral Maryland. The organization provides apprentice and skilled trade training, workforce development programs, group benefit insurance, and member educational and networking events for its member companies. Pettis Earns Entomologist Certificate Locally-owned Dominion Pest Control, which serves the Susquehanna Valley, recently announced that its general service manager, Shawn Pettis, has become the first person to become a public health entomologist (PHE) certificate holder, a new certification offered by the Entomological Society of America (ESA). Pettis recently received his PHE certification after becoming an associate certified entomologist (ACE), which indicates that the certified person has acquired skills to
identify insects and understand their biology. The PHE certificate acknowledges that the holder “studied for and passed a rigorous exam covering insects and the diseases they vector, as well as principals of integrated pest management.” In today’s world with diseases like West Nile virus and Lyme disease related to pests found in backyards, such as ticks and mosquitoes, Dominion is pleased to have Pettis on board to help make decisions about control measures that can be implemented on
customers’ properties. Pettis is a graduate of Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, where he studied business and currently serves on the board of governors. The registration deadline is Tuesday, May 19. For more information or to register, readers may visit https://extension .psu.edu/strategies-for -volunteer-management-during -a-crisis.
“Empty Shelves at the Store? Food System Disruptions and COVID-19” will take place on Thursday, May 14, from noon to 1 p.m. The town hall-style event will feature a panel of Penn State faculty and Extension specialists who will explain what is happening with the food supply chain, share tools and resources for how and where to buy food from Pennsylvania farmers, and discuss what local producers and markets are doing to operate safely during this pandemic. The registration deadline is Thursday, May 14. To register, readers may visit https:// extension.psu.edu/ and search for “Empty Shelves at the Store? Food System Disruptions and COVID-19.”
Neighboring Volunteers Support Bridge Of Hope Clients Bridge of Hope has been serving families experiencing or at risk of homelessness in Lancaster County for more than 30 years. The organization seeks long-term stability for its clients, so each family receives professional case management services along with tangible and emotional supports from a group of six to eight trained, church-based Neighboring Volunteers. The Neighboring Volunteers have been particularly important during the continuing shutdown, said Anne Dunnenberger, director of outreach. Every family Bridge of Hope Lancaster serves has been impacted by recent events. As it is, families facing or at risk of homelessness - predominantly single mothers with two or three children - often struggle to find sustainable employment and

reliable transportation. Now, many adults have lost their jobs or had their hours reduced to below life-sustaining levels. Some parents have lost child care or access to transportation, jeopardizing their ability to work. The stress of the shutdown and the threat of the coronavirus has compounded the trauma and stress families facing homelessness already lived with. Dunnenberger shared the story of Carmen, who joined Bridge of Hope last fall after fleeing an abusive relationship. Carmen began working at a local retirement community and was taking classes to become a certified nursing assistant when the stay-at-home orders were issued in March. Suddenly, Carmen was without child care and was forced to reduce her work hours. She is struggling with diminished income, accumulating bills, and taking care of her young daughter in the midst of isolation and despair. Thankfully, Carmen’s Neighboring Volunteers have rallied to provide support. They have made meals, dropped off groceries, and offered encouragement. Neighboring Volunteers for other families have

helped to write resumes, assisted in the completion of essential paperwork, and gathered via Zoom for game nights. They are the helpers: standing on the sidewalk singing “Happy Birthday” to a 6-year-old, helping to find new housing, and calling regularly to make sure a family has what it needs and knows its members are cared for. Like a functional extended family, Neighboring Volunteers offer encouragement, connections, and resources. “Neighboring means connecting creatively; walking in faith, not fear; and helping, not hoarding,” Dunnenberger said. “If your church is looking to explore new ways to build neighboring relationships with your neighbors who are facing homelessness, Bridge of Hope is here for you.” Individuals may visit www.lancaster.bridgeof hope inc.org to learn how they can be a part of the Neighboring Volunteer movement. To support families facing homelessness who have been deeply impacted by the current crisis, readers are invited to consider contributing to the Bridge of Hope Coronavirus Response Fund at www.bridgeof hope inc.org/give. “Now, more than ever, vulnerable communities need Neighboring Volunteers and hope,” Dunnenberger remarked.

The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and the Department of State (DOS) announced recently that a U.S. Army Reserve task force of 85 medical specialists has arrived in Pennsylvania to assist civilian health care professionals with the care of coronavirus patients. They will be deployed wherever they are needed. The Army has mobilized 1,275 Reserve medical specialists into 15 Urban Augmentation Medical Task Forces to reinforce civilian health care in areas that are experiencing a surge in coronavirus cases. Each medical task force consists of 14 physicians, including an infectious disease specialist and four respiratory specialists; 16 medics; 13 nurses; five physician assistants; two dentists; four pharmacists; two clinical psychologists; one psychiatrist; two occupational therapy specialists; four dietitians and other supporting staff members who can perform low-triage care and test for COVID-19. The first members of the unit arrived in Pennsylvania on April 16 to visit sites and coordinate with the commonwealth’s departments of State, Health, Human Services, Mili-
tary and Veterans Affairs, and the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency. This advance visit ensured the full unit could move swiftly into action once they arrived. This task force will fall under the control of the dual status command recently established within the Pennsylvania National Guard. The Department of State waived certain professional licensing requirements to ensure that these military medical professionals, who already hold a license in at least one state or a federal license from the United States Armed Forces, can lawfully provide medical and other health care services in Pennsylvania. The military occupational specialties of most members of the unit fall under existing Pennsylvania statutes that exempt them from the state’s licensure requirements. This includes physicians, dietitians, registered nurses, psychologists, and occupational therapists. For those specialists who did not immediately qualify under existing statutes and regulations, including practical nurses, dentists and pharmacists, DOS requested, and Gov. Fulton Theatre Posts Changes The Fulton Theatre has posted updates related to its 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons. The theater plans to resume the 2019-20 season in August, with its production of “Kinky Boots.” All shows have been rescheduled, and the Fulton will reopen as soon as possible. All subscription series packages will receive new performance dates and will otherwise remain unaffected at this time. In the meantime, the Fulton is implementing plans to help and give back to the community. The Fulton Theatre will retrofit its production shops to make personal protective equipment for local Lancaster hospitals and medical facilities, including face shields and masks. This project is possible due to an underwriting gift from Ed and Jeannie Arnold. The Fulton has also made artist housing available to visiting medical professionals. The Fulton Theatre will remain paused, including the box office, until receiving the all-clear from the state and local governments to return to the theater. The Fulton will work to move every patron to their corresponding day and time during the rescheduled run. For additional information, readers may contact Eric Pugh at epugh@thefulton.org. The Fulton Academy’s spring classes have been canceled. The summer classes will remain as scheduled, beginning Monday, June 15. Students registered for spring classes will receive a credit toward a future class. Any requested refunds will be processed once the box office is able to open. The Fulton Follies, the spring fundraiser themed “Moulin Rouge,” scheduled for Friday, April 24, at the Hamilton Club has been postponed. A new date has yet to be determined and will be announced in the future. Additionally, other scheduled Producer and Artistic Director Circle events have been canceled. The Fulton Theatre will continue to engage audiences through social media channels, including www.face book.com/fultontheatre. Construction on phase II of the Breakout Performance Campaign has been put on hold. The Fulton will communicate changes as they happen. For more information on the Fulton’s Breakout Performance Campaign, readers may visit www.fultonbreakout.org. Efforts will be made to continue communications with audience members through email, www.thefulton.org, and social media. Urgent questions should be sent to boxoffice@thefulton.org or messaged via the Fulton’s Facebook page, which will be continuously monitored by Fulton Theatre staff. For those wishing to obtain a refund, the Fulton’s box office will process those requests upon their return.
