SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954
VOL LXIII • NO 16
Searching For A Snake’s Family BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Mastersonville Volunteer Fire Company will host two upcoming community events.
Serving The Community “If your house is burning down, you need us.” That’s the simple message Lori Shenk imparts from the Mastersonville Volunteer Fire Company, where she is the assistant secretary. To help raise funds for its operating expenses, the fire company will host a breakfast on Saturday, May 21. To raise awareness of everything it does in the community, the station will hold an open house on Monday, June 6. “People have been asking and asking when we are doing a breakfast again,” said Kristin Martin, breakfast chair, noting that it’s been a few years since the station served the meal. The all-you-can-eat breakfast will run from 6 to 10 a.m.
at 2121 Meadow View Road, Manheim, and will feature eggs (both scrambled and made to order), sausage, bacon, pancakes, home-fried potatoes, cereal, fruit, doughnuts, coffee, orange juice, milk and chocolate milk. The food will be prepared by the firefighters, and the breakfast will be served in the station’s engine bay. “You can go back for food as many times as you want, and you can hang out here as long as you want,” Martin said. “A lot of people from the community like to come to talk to their friends and neighbors and just visit.” The cost for the breakfast is by donation. The open house will begin at 7 p.m. on June 6. “The open house is an opportunity for us to network with the community,” Shenk stated. “It
gives people a chance to see what we do.” At the open house, children and adults will be able to try flowing water at a fire suppression station. Other features will include information about the station’s Quick Response Service medical unit, a chance to see its two new engines up close and an opportunity to learn more about the rescue tools the station uses. Self-guided tours of the station will be available, with informational signs posted at various rooms to provide details on what happens within the building. Free food will be served at the open house, including soft-serve ice cream, popcorn and cotton candy. “We’ll also have an information table set up, so people can fill out an application to volunteer if they want to or
they can ask questions,” Shenk said. Shenk encourages residents who live on farms to attend the open house and discuss setting up a visit to their property for fire preplanning, where firefighters can learn things like the location of ponds on the property or potential obstacles to work around in the event of a fire. The open house will be held during the regular Monday night training sessions for the firefighters, which will give attendees the opportunity to see the volunteers in action, Shenk remarked. “Bring the kids, enjoy some ice cream, see what we’re all about and meet some firefighters,” she said. For more information on the breakfast or the open house, search for “Mastersonville Fire Co” on Facebook.

As the president and director of Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary, Jesse Rothacker is used to unusual calls. So he wasn’t surprised when he got a request on May 1 to search a barn in Manheim for a mysterious snake that had shown up in the same place four days in a row. He was surprised with what he found, however. “It was a California kingsnake, a nonvenomous species from the West Coast,” he said. Knowing the snake is not one to be found in the wild in Pennsylvania, Rothacker suspects the reptile is a pet, and he’s actively searching for its owner. Rothacker’s daughter, Viola, temporarily named the snake Zeebee while the owner search is underway. “He has a black and white pattern that she thought sort of looked like a zebra, so she came up with ‘Zeebee,’” Rothacker noted. The small snake measures just over a foot long. “If I had to

guess, I would say it probably hatched in the summer of 2021,” Rothacker explained. The snake likely hibernated through the winter and recently woke up. He doesn’t think the kingsnake has traveled far from its home, but he can’t be totally sure. “It most likely wouldn’t have moved more than a few hundred yards from its original location,” he said, but since there isn’t much development around where the snake was found, Rothacker suspects it could have hitched a ride on the undercarriage of a car and ended up far from home. Rothacker noted that when he rescues reptiles, he typically won’t post pictures of the animal but will publicize some basic information, hoping the rightful owner will reach out. In Zeebee’s case, pictures had already made the rounds on social media by the time the snake was rescued, so Rothacker will use the snake’s markings to help identify it when it’s claimed. Rescuing a snake is just part of a typical day’s work for Rothacker. He’s rescued snapping turtles stuck in concrete basins and snakes trapped in window wells. Many times, the animals can just be released once they are freed, but in Zeebee’s case, it was likely the snake was someone’s pet.

Viola Rothacker holds Zeebee, a California kingsnake recently found in Manheim.
“We would appreciate any help … locating his family, who are probably worried sick about him,” he said. While Zeebee waits to go home, he’s in good company at Forgotten Friend, where two other California kingsnakes have a permanent home. Rothacker emphasized that it’s common for people to see snakes throughout the region as the weather warms up, but that there’s likely no cause to worry. “We have so few venomous snakes in Pennsylvania,” he said. “If you see a snake, you are welcome to take a picture of it and we will ID it for free. We’ll remove your anxiety about it.” He also noted that he’s made a few videos of Zeebee, which can be viewed on the sanctuary’s YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/ ForgottenFriendReptileTV. If you have information about Zeebee, contact Forgotten Friend at info@forgotten friend.org or leave a message on the organization’s Facebook page.

Herr Homestead Reopens For Tours The Herr Family Homestead, 1756 Nissley Road, Landisville, next to Amos Herr Park, has reopened for guided tours. Tours of the house, grounds and barn will be available on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month through the end of October. House tours will be approximately one hour and will begin at 1 p.m., with the last tour at 3:15 p.m. The 12room brick farm house is furnished with pieces that reflect
the period 1842 to 1910. This is the first year the interior design of the Sweitzer-style post and beam barn, circa 1820, which illustrates the history of agriculture in Landisville before the age of specialized farming, will be open to view. Visitors may view tool and farm equipment that would have been used during the late 1800s and early 1900s. There are some antique farm tractors and belt-driven farm equip-
ment such as corn shellers and a fodder chopper. Items in the tobacco shed include a Minnich tobacco press that was manufactured in Landisville. Guests may also explore the gardens surrounding the homestead.
There is no admission fee, but donations are appreciated. Group tours are available. For more information, call 717-898-8822. Information about the homestead is available at www.herrhomestead.org and www.facebook.com/ herrhomestead.

inning with a three-run shot. The Lady Barons posted a single run in the third before braking out again in the fourth with a game sealing seven-run burst. Three Octorara miscues led to three Central runs, but good offense accounted for the rest. Miranda Ober highlighted that spurt with a two-run single while Mylin finished her monster game with a one run single. One day later Manheim was unable to solve Northern Lebanon leading to an 8-1 loss. Wettig was back in the circle for the Lady Barons and allowed 10 hits and four earned runs while absorbing the loss. She added nine strikeouts and three walks to her day. Hostetter broke up the Lady Vikings shutout bid with a RBI triple in the bottom of the seventh. The Lady Barons opened another set of back-to-back games on May 9th, topping Donegal 9-6. Hostetter, Damon and Mylin fronted the offense while Wettig picked up the win. Mylin closed out the scoring with a two-run home run in the seventh and added a sac fly in the third for a three RBI game. Wettig covered the first five innings and took the loss after absorbing the bulk of the Lady Streaks attack. That included 12 runs, nine earned, on 16 hits and one walk to go with two strikeouts. Hostetter finished the final two frames, and five Township runs in relief. Wettig also fronted the Central offense with a one hit, twoRBI game. Hostetter, Damon and Ober added one RBI each. BASEBALL Baron baseball closed out their regular season on a 3-1 stretch with the lone setback coming on May 10th when 6A-playoff bound Township claimed the battle of Manheim. The Barons finished the regular season with a 17-2 mark and dates in the L-L and the District 3-5A tournament. Manheim started that 3-1 run with a 3-0 win over Octorara on May 4th. Connor Rohrer scattered five hits with the help of 11 strikeouts on his way to the win. Jared Murray struck out the side in the seventh to earn the save. Collin Neiles and Nolan Book each poked RBI singles to lead the offense. One day later it was Murray earning the 22-8 victory over Northern Lebanon after only
four innings of work. Cole Lawhorne covered the final three innings and allowed five of the eight Viking runs. The pair totaled nine strikeouts and nine walks while allowing 10 hits. They received plenty of run support starting with Dylan Yoder who highlighted his five RBI game with a third inning grand slam. Neiles added a three-hit, three-RBI game while Book, Collin Thompson and Andrew Harrison combined for seven hits and six-RBI. Manheim’s final victory of the regular season came on the 9th by a 4-3 final over Donegal. The Barons posted the win despite just four hits thanks to an Indian pitching staff that allowed the winning run on a wild pitch while providing Cayde Connelly’s RBI via hit by pitch in the third. Thompson added a sac fly in the third after putting Manheim on the board with a RBI single in the first. Rohrer allowed just three runs on eight hits to earn the win thanks to his 12 strikeouts. Lawhorne covered the final frame to preserve the win. The loss to Township came on the 10th with the Blue Streaks posting a 7-0 win. Lawhorne and Ty Clugston split pitching duties down the middle of the six-inning affair, combining for two strikeouts and six walks. Watson and Yoder led the offense with two-hit games.

should routinely change their online banking user ID and password. Additionally, for those who become a victim of identity theft, Northwest recommends several steps. Victims should call their financial institution immediately. An identity theft complaint should be filed with the Federal Trade Commission at www.consumer.ftc.gov or 877-438-4338. Victims should also contact the three major credit bureaus to place a fraud alert on their credit report. To place a fraud alert, call Equifax at 800-5256285, Experian at 888-3973742, and TransUnion at 800680-7289. It is also important for people to file a police report to protect themselves if an ID thief starts using their information to commit crimes. To help online banking users protect against spoofing, Northwest Bank has compiled a list of best practices for protection and remediation. Spoofing is the act of disguising a communication, such as a call or text, from an unknown source as being from a known, trusted source like a financial institution. If individuals did not initiate contact with their bank and are contacted by someone claiming to be from their bank, they should ignore the text or email or disconnect the call. Then, they should call their bank immediately using a phone number from a known source, like online banking or a bank statement. People should never send personal information over instant messaging, text, or email. Requests for personal information over the phone are almost always a scam. Banks will never contact individuals and ask them to provide a code sent by text message or email to access their account. Text verification codes should only be initiated by the customer and entered by them through channels like online banking. Individuals should routinely check online banking to be sure there have not been any unauthorized logins. If someone identifies unauthorized logins, they should update their user ID and password immediately and review their transaction activity, reporting anything suspicious to their financial institution. The same user ID and password should not be used to access different websites. An email address should not be used as one’s online banking user ID, and individuals

Downsizing The Details
Jim Flowers, with a work in progress BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Many people find success by thinking bigger. For Jim Flowers, it’s all about thinking smaller. Flowers, who lives in Marietta, has been creating scale replicas of the façades of local buildings for the past few years. He typically works in a
scale of one inch to one foot and completes the façades in painstaking detail, including bricks, shingles, stones and shutters. Beginning in 1995, Jim operated Flowers in the Kitchen, an Elizabethtownbased restaurant, with his wife, Pollyann, and his daughter, Laura. While there, he cre-
ated his first façade when he replicated the restaurant. The business eventually closed, and Jim didn’t think about doing another façade until his wife passed away three years ago. “I had nothing to do, and I needed something to do,” Jim said simply, describing how he got into the work. Jim has always had a creative side. He and his wife sold handmade items at craft shows throughout the region, featuring Pollyann’s counted cross stitch and Jim’s wooden folk art. His façade work is all self-taught, he said. To start a project, Jim finds a building that strikes his fancy. “Most of the time, I’ll get permission

to make one, but if someone says ‘no,’ I’ll probably do it anyway,” he stated with a laugh. “I pick something I like, I measure it and I take pictures.” He also creates custom blueprints, making a layout of the building’s windows, doors and other special features. His replicas typically begin with a frame of one-by-threeinch plywood. He then constructs the façade in detail, with special attention paid to paint colors and materials. Although he strives for accuracy, he will make one exception: “I put candles in each window,” he explained. “Even if you don’t have candles in the window of your house, I’m putting
them in there. They look nice.” Jim can spend up to 80 hours working on a façade. He’s quick to point out that although that’s technically two weeks of work, at 40 hours a week, he’s not putting in long days. At 83, he’s taking his time to complete each façade. “I might work an hour, then take a nap,” he said. “Sometimes, I’ll work for half an hour in a day. Some days, I’ll work for a few hours at a time.” His façade workshop is set up in the living room of the home he shares with his daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter. Over the years, he’s com-
pleted façades of buildings throughout Lancaster County, including the Marietta Community House, the Maytown Historical Society museum, the Haldeman Mansion and countless private homes. Building the replicas not only fills his days with purpose, Jim said, but it allows him to indulge his creativity on his own schedule, and he doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon. “I do what I want when I want and how I want,” he said. “I just enjoy it.” Jim will take orders for façades of homes or businesses. For more information, call him at 717-333-0593.

Wiederseim To Sell Collection Of Ed And Carol Stoudt Of Stoudts’ Black Angus Brewery and Pub
Wiederseim Associates is pleased to offer the private collection of Carol and Ed Stoudt for auction on Saturday, July 24, at 9 a.m. The sale includes the contents of the legendary Stoudt’s Black Angus Restaurant and Brewery in Adamstown, Pa., as well as Ed and Carol’s private collection from their home. After over 30 years in business, Ed and Carol have sold the business and are seeking their next adventure.
The couple opened the Black Angus Antique Mall along with the restaurant and beer garden in the 1980s. Business was good. Why not open a brewery? Based on German beers brewed in the Reinheitsgebot tradition, the couple opened the brewery in 1987, with Carol becoming the first female brewmaster in the U.S. since Prohibition. Through the years, the couple traveled and collected extensively
for their business and home. They assembled items such as Black Forest carved furniture (including two tall case clocks), whimsical circus novelties, Art Nouveau brass chandeliers for the beer hall, carousel horses and an unusual carousel
running rooster, vintage posters, a large collection of German steins, a restored 1932 Auburn Convertible and a 1937 Ford Woody, partially restored, all of which will be in the July 24 sale. “If you’ve ever been to Stoudt’s, you’ll be very familiar with the items in this sale and won’t want to miss it. Their Oktoberfests were the best! Ed in his lederhosen leading the procession, the beer hall with great German food and the German band,” said Ted Wiederseim, auctioneer and owner of Wiederseim Associates Inc. “The Stoudt sale will be our first live sale in over a year, and we’re very excited about getting back to business as usual.” Bidding will be live/in-person as well as live online through Bidsquare, Invaluable and Liveauctioneers. A preview starts Monday, July 19, and runs through Friday, July 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale will be held at Wiederseim’s facility, located at 1041 W. Bridge St., Phoenixville, Pa. For additional information, call 610-827-1910 or visit www.wiederseim.com.
The massive Art Deco brass chandeliers are from Stoudt’s Bier Hall.
July Is Customer Appreciation Month At The Emporium The Historic Burlington Antiques and Art Emporium in Burlington City, N.J., will continue its year-long celebration of 20 years in business with Customer Appreciation Month all July. The Emporium will give away three gift certificates at the end of the month. Three lucky customers will have a chance to win a $50, $25, or $15 gift certificate to the multidealer shop. Each time a customer receives an invoice, they will receive a raffle ticket, thus the more a customer buys, the more chances they have of winning. Also, each month during the summer, the front sales display case will highlight dealer’s best or unusual items from their booth or case. The Emporium will be divided into three sections, starting with its dealers located on Route 130 and ending with the dealers on River Continued on page 5
