Inspiration To Be Found At Power Camp BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Kids, get ready for “a week of inspiration and perspiration.” That’s how the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) describes Power Camp, a coed four-day sports camp for children ages 8 to 12. The Lancaster FCA will host Power Camp at two locations this summer. From Monday, June 14, through Thursday, June 17, camp will be held
at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland. Sport choices at the New Holland camp are basketball, field hockey, soccer, baseball or lacrosse. Camp will also be held from Monday, June 21, through Thursday, June 24, at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road. Sport choices in Manheim are basketball, volleyball, soccer or baseball. Each camp will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and lunch will be provided. See Power Camp pg 7
Members of the Manheim VFW and auxiliary (from left) Bill King, Mark Fisher, Tracy Tunstall and Craig Fisher invite the public to a Memorial Day parade and ceremony.
Honoring The Fallen On Memorial Day he annual Manheim Memorial Day parade and ceremony will take place on Monday, May 31, beginning at 10 a.m. The parade will assemble at the Manheim Central High School stadium, 400 E. Adele Ave., and will run a loop through town, proceeding west on High Street, north on Main Street and east on Gramby Street before returning to the stadium for the ceremony. The event is organized by the Manheim VFW Post 5956 Cyrus R. Peters Memorial Post. The parade will feature the Manheim Central High School band, as well as local sports teams, Scouts, fire departments, veterans and the Pennsylvania National Guard. The ceremony will highlight the military service of Manheim residents. “Everything will be based around Memorial Day and honoring the people who have served our country and who died for our freedom,” said Bill King, former post commander, who will be the event’s master of
ognized, poems will be read, and memorial flowers will be distributed by the VFW Auxiliary 5956. Music will be provided by the Manheim Central High School band. King said the VFW welcomes new members as well as invites any veterans to come out for the parade and ceremony. “We’re always looking for more veterans to join us,” he noted. “They can just come to the parade and walk with us, even if they aren’t a member of our VFW.” Mark Fisher, commander of the Manheim VFW, said holding a ceremony to recognize veterans is important. “We need to honor the sacrifices of these people,” he stated. “Each individual who signed up to serve made an agreement to give his or her life in defense of the freedom we all enjoy. We don’t want their death to be in vain. We want them to know that we remember, we appreciate them, and we honor them.” For more information on the parade and ceremony, search for “Manheim VFW Post 5956 - Cyrus R. Peters Memorial Post” on Facebook.
Power Camp will offer a variety of sports for boys and girls ages 8 to 12.
An Empowering Community For Women BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Heather Lindsey will be the first one to tell you her life hasn’t been easy, but instead of wallowing in self-pity, she is working hard to help others. “I have a heart for women,” she stated. “I’ve had a hard life, a hard upbringing. You name it, I’ve been through it. But, one day, God laid this idea on my heart.” That idea was to create 4C, a women’s ministry that meets in Columbia and Manheim.

ceremonies. “We’ll be reading the honor roll of everyone from the borough who has passed in conflict since World War II.” Each year, two fallen members of the military are featured in the ceremony, King noted, adding that this year’s honorees are Richard Earl Connelly CQM USN, who was lost during the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, and John Long Jr. CPT USAR, who was killed in an attack on the aircraft carrier Kaiyo in Kyushu, Japan in 1945. “These two lost heroes show the small town of Manheim had their young men and women engaged in World War II throughout the duration of the war, in which 30 military members from Manheim lost their lives,” King remarked. The ceremony will also include a guest speaker, Brig. Gen. Michael E. Wegscheider, assistant division commander of the 28th Infantry Division of the Pennsylvania National Guard. Bee-ing A Friend To Pollinators deners plant flowers that bloom in February, March, early April, August, September, October, and November. “When it’s the end of April, bees can find nectar and pollen everywhere,” she explained. She also encourages allowing some clover, violets, and even dandelions in the green landscape of the lawn to create pollinator islands. Stahl said that putting out water for bees can be a controversial subject because water can be a point of disease transfer. She recommends only putting out water after several weeks of drought and then being sure to include rocks or logs for bees to keep them from drowning. “Some bees have the job of being the water collectors,” she said, noting that water can be used to cool the hive or thin honey that has crystallized for use. “A lot of people are using the venom from honeybees for medicinal purposes,” said Stahl, who noted that treatments for arthritis and Lyme disease are being studied. She noted that if one is stung accidentally, it is wise not to grab the stinger. “Use a fingernail to flick the stinger up and away,” she said. “If you squeeze, you (are injecting) the venom into you, but by flicking you remove the whole thing.” In addition to the website, information about the society may be found by searching for “Lancaster County Beekeepers Society” on Facebook.

restrictions, but Stahl said that the organization hopes to hold the 2022 event. Another service the organization offers is swarm retrieval. Swarms occur when a hive divides itself. “The queen and a bunch of the bees leave,” said Stahl. “(Bees) swarm anywhere between April and October, but the bulk happens in May,” noted Stahl, displaying photos of swarms she retrieved during 2020 on her phone. “A typical traditional swarm looks like a big ball of bees.” The organization’s website - www.lancaster beekeepers.org - provides a list of swarm collectors divided by location. “A swarm may sit there for 20 minutes, two hours, or two days,” said Stahl. “ When you see a swarm, you want to get a beekeeper there as fast as you can.” Stahl said that beekeepers use a special bee box that smells familiar to bees with an entrance that can be made smaller and even closed to capture bees. The website also offers informational documents under the “Members” tab, including an article on designing a garden for pollinators. Stahl recommends that gar-

“Our club is a neat thing,” said Lori Stahl of the Lancaster County Beekeepers Society. “We have been around since the mid-1800s.” Stahl noted that at one time the organization changed its name to the Lancaster Honey Producers, but in the early 2000s, it was restored to the original name. “It has always been about beekeepers mentoring new bee-
keepers and being advocates for the honeybees,” she explained. To help give beginning beekeepers a sweet start, the organization normally holds a one-day workshop in late January or early February. According to Stahl, past events attracted about 100 attendees, with another 100 fledgling beekeepers on a waiting list. This year’s event was canceled due to COVID-19

Fundraiser To Provide COVID Relief In Bolivia to find medical items as simple as acetaminophen. Bolivian doctors have run out of many medications. “I can’t imagine living somewhere where there are no food banks, no shelters, or no clothing banks to help the people. I just knew I had to help in any way I could,” commented Lily. Lily decided to raise funds to help the Hogar de Andre de Esperanza y Alegria Orphanage. Due to another round of lockdowns, the children had not been able to get new shoes in quite some time, so Lily set a goal to raise $2,000 so each of the close to 100 orphans could receive a new

pair of shoes. Working from her interest in art and fashion, Lily decided to hand-paint bayong bags her Thai aunt helped her purchase from a woman-owned Thai business. “I was excited that purchasing the purses was also going to bless the artisans who handmade them in Thailand. It’s like a double blessing,” Lily explained. Starting with 16 bags, Lily used acrylic paints to decorate the purses with her own design or with different flower patterns she learned through YouTube tutorials. By producing something both beautiful and useful, she hoped other women and girls would join her fundraising efforts. As of May 3, Lily had raised $1,200 toward the effort by asking family and friends to donate online to FIA’s work in Bolivia. Community members interested in buying any of the remaining bags may email Lily at ssmedich@comcast.net. Direct donations to FIA’s ministries in Bolivia can be made at www.fiaintl.org/donate/. Lily hopes to have the full $2,000 raised by early June, so donations are sought in May. FIA provided close to
$45,000 in 2020 for COVID relief to the hard-hit town of Guayaramerin, in northern Bolivia. National pastors who partner with FIA have been using contributions to distribute food and medicine to the small villages in Cauchuela Esperanza and Primero de Mayo. A caravan of three pickup trucks and a minivan have delivered enough food for more than 150 sick or grieving families. Waves of relief resources continue to be distributed every two weeks. “(In northern Bolivia), 90% of families (have) at least one person who contracted the virus. The local pastors who partner with us are desperate to offer hope and tangible demonstrations of God’s love to the villagers,” shared Tim Johnston, FIA’s executive director.

A local youth recently undertook a project to aid Bolivian orphans as part of a larger COVID-19 outreach through Friends In Action Intl. (FIA), a nonprofit headquartered in Middletown. The project began when Lily Medich, 11, of York, learned through FIA’s website about the great need in Bolivia. Northern Bolivia in particular has been significantly affected during the pandemic and continues to be severely under-resourced. The town hospital has a maximum capacity of 35 beds and one ventilator, and many people from nearby villages along the Amazon River travel two days

DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM
There are few things in this world that trigger a case of nostalgia for baby boomers like drive-in movie theaters. But, it isn’t only boomers who appreciate these icons of entertainment; Gen Xers and millennials are packing the kids in the car or setting out for the perfect date night. Seriously, if you want to score some points with your significant other, a surprise trip to one of Pennsylvania’s drive-ins would be a great departure from the same old date-night routine. Pennsylvania was an early adopter of the outdoor movie theater craze. In April 1934, Shankweiler’s Drive-In in Orefield, Lehigh County, became the second drive-in movie theater to open in the U.S. Today, it is the oldest operating drive-in in the country. The Keystone State ranks second behind New York in the number still in operation. The evolution of technology, like the switch from window speakers to radio sound and the move from traditional to digital screens, has improved the quality of picture and sound. But the essence of the drive-in experience hasn’t changed in more than 70 years - waiting for the sun to go down, the smell of freshly popped popcorn and making memories with family and friends. My own memories include taking in a movie with a carload of friends when I was a teenager and then going back to the Columbia Drive-In (no longer in operation) as a young mom with my husband and our children watching from the open hatchback of our car. Power Camp from pg 1 through the work of coaches and athletes. In the four years since FCA came to Lancaster County, the group has created huddles led by students at schools throughout the region, including Garden Spot, Pequea Valley, Penn Manor and Manheim Central. “I’ve seen at Pequea Valley the growth that occurs because the huddles are student-led, versus me coming in as an adult,” said Adam Burns, area representative for FCA. “It’s inspiring watching them encourage and equip their fellow students.” Burns said one of the best things about Power Camp has been the lasting impact it’s
had on campers. “Many of the campers from our first camp have now become huddle leaders,” he stated. “I’ve had campers who, as soon as camp ends, say, ‘We can’t wait to sign up for next year.’” For more information on Power Camp or to register, visit https://lancaster fca.org/camp-2.

“It’s a great camp for kids to try a sport for the first time, under the supervision of quality coaches,” said Diana Roth, area representative for FCA. “You don’t have to be the best athlete or be super competitive. It’s just a way to try a sport and have fun.” This is the third year the camp will be offered in New Holland and the first year for the camp in Manheim. “Our goal is to eventually have four Power Camps at different regions in the county,” Roth noted. Manheim Central earned the first of what it hopes are many rewards during its stellar baseball season this year, capturing the LancasterLebanon League Section Three title with its 12-2 victory over Donegal last Monday. It is the third straight crown for the Barons. “It was good to win against Donegal today and wrap up the Section Three title,” Barons’ coach Jason Thompson said. “It was good to see the hitting spread out and the guys get key hits when we needed it.” Colton Book and Wyatt Becker combined for a five-inning no hitter. This was Central’s second no-hitter this season. Book struck out 13 batters and Becker fanned two. The Indians scored two runs in the in fifth, courtesy of a few walks and hit batters. Brady Harbach, Riley McGalliche and Book all scored in the third inning on wild pitches, as the Barons sent nine batters to the plate. Harbach and Book each had RBI doubles in the second inning. Eight of the nine Barons had a hit, but no player had multiple hits. Malakai Zilinski knocked in two runs on his smash to deep left-center field. Drew Mylin also had two RBIs and Cam Eberly scored three runs. Manheim was back at it the next day, pounding out 14 runs on 10 hits to beat Octorara 14-4. Connor Rohrer earned the win on the mound, throwing five innings and striking out nine. Becker came in relief in the sixth and struck out four. Manheim scored three runs in the second, but the Braves responded with four in the bottom of the inning for a 4-3 lead. The Barons erupted for six runs in the sixth inning to pull away. Then Manheim exploded for a 14-1 triumph over Northern Lebanon. Dylan Yoder blasted a 2run homer. Trey Derck was strong
on the mound, pitching into the sixth before his pitch count expired. VOLLEYBALL The Barons made quick work of Ephrata on May 6, winning in three games on scores of 25-14, 25-12 and 25-20. The teams were tied at 7-7 in the first game, but Manheim scored seven of the next eight points to take a 14-8 lead. Ephrata cut Central’s lead to 16-14, but this would be as close as the Mounts would get. Scoring eight straight points behind Blake Wagner serving, Central scored the last nine points of the game to pull away. Manheim led 22-20 in the third game and scored the last three points, getting two kills from Peter Burkhart (six kills, two blocks) and a kill from Wagner (12 kills, two blocks, two aces and one dig) off a pass from Jeremiah Zimmerman (23 assists, one dig, one block, one kill and one ace). Barend Oostdan registered six kills and two blocks in the match. Some younger players, like Burkhart, established themselves during the match, said Jim Graham, who was filling in as Manheim’s coach for Craig Dietrich who was at home after an injury. “I think he is finally understanding what we are asking of him,” Graham said about Burkhart. “For a smaller guy, he can really jump, and I think it just came down to finally getting his timing and being able to swing at the ball and not be worried if it is going into the net or out of bounds; just have confidence. I think they (the freshmen) are all slowly getting there, but I think Pete kind of moved ahead of all of them on that, but they’ve all grown a lot.” The Barons lost 3-0 against Garden Spot May 12 in a battle for the Section Two title. Games scores were 25-20, 25-18 and 25-18. SOFTBALL Manheim rallied to beat Northern Lebanon, 9-6 in eight innings at
Northern Lebanon. The win was Central’s sixth in seven games. Gabby Wettig struck out 10 to gain the win in the circle and helped her cause with a big day at the plate, collecting four hits. Miranda Ober went 3-for-5 with three RBIs. The Vikings tied the game at 5-5, after scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh. The Barons responded with four runs in the extra inning and that proved to be enough of a cushion. Under the lights on Senior Night on May 12, the Barons jumped out to a 2-0 and 3-1 lead against Donegal, but the Indians rallied for a 4-3 victory in Manheim. Manheim came out aggressive, scoring twice in the first inning. Mickey Lauver led off with a single and scored Ober’s first of two triples in the game. Wettig knocked Ober in. Ober led the third with a triple and Emma Damon knocked her in with a ground out, making it 3-1. But then Manheim’s bats went silent when they needed hits. The Barons left the bases loaded in the fifth and left two on base in the sixth. “We just didn’t keep at it,” Barons’ coach John VanBlargan said. “We kinda fell off a little bit. We got runners on, but couldn’t push them in. Couldn’t keep the pressure on them. It’s a big deal when you keep the pressure on the other team. They make different choices.” TENNIS Central’s top-seeded player, Andrew Rajaratnam, was the first alternate for districts and got a chance to compete, battling Red Lion’s Cooper Wheeler in the first round of the District Three singles tournament. The first set was certainly a battle and Wheeler knew he was in a match, holding off Rajaratnam for a 6-4 victory. Rajaratnam came out hot, jumping to a 2-0 lead and had opportunities for points to go up 30, but Wheeler shook off some early nerves and started winning points
and games. Rajaratnam lost 6-0 in the second set. The two met during a non-league contest earlier this season and Wheeler won 6-2, 6-2, but the match was closer than that Barons’ coach Ryan Jeckel said. The goal in the rematch was to hit the ball deep and keep Wheeler guessing. It worked until Rajaratnam got off script and Wheeler got his legs and started driving, Jeckel said. Overall, the coach was proud of how his senior performed. “I’m glad he got to compete in districts. He deserved to be there,” Jeckel said. “He won all the matches he was supposed to win this year.” TRACK The Central boys finished the season with a 5-1 record and second place in the section after an 86-64 victory over Ephrata. Manheim’s big advantage was the field events, where Kahlen Watt (high jump), Caleb Sick (pole vault), Kade Kegarise (javelin), Zach Witmer (long and triple jumps) and Landon Watson (discus and shot put) helped the Barons win all seven events. Landon McGallicher won the high hurdles (15.2) and the 4x800 relay team of Michael Greenwald, Brady Knier, Gabe Redcay and Luke Redcay posted a time of 8:37 for first place. The Lady Barons suffered their first loss in their last regular season meet, falling to unbeaten Ephrata, 84-66, in a battle for the section title. Central earned seven first place finishes, but the Lady Mounts did them one better with eight. Maddie Knier continued her super sophomore season, sweeping all four events (javelin, discus, high and long jumps) she participated in for the fifth time this season. Malea Stoner won both hurdle races and Chloe Enck won the shot put.

The mission of 4C is to empower women and provide a sense of community, open conversation, creative arts and worship. The “C’s” stand for conversation, coloring, coffee and Christ, and the group’s tagline is “4 Christ. Thru Christ.” The group meets from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on the second, third and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 237 Locust St., Columbia, and from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays at Teen Central, 15 S. Wolf St., Manheim. “You walk in the door where you are, and we meet you where you are,” Lindsey said. “We want to minister to women wherever they are in their lives and whatever they are going through, and we want to give them an opportunity to meet new friends.” The second Tuesday and Wednesday of each month focus on coloring and conversation, Lindsey noted, adding, “It’s very low-key. and share whatever’s on our hearts.” On the third Tuesday in Columbia and the fourth Wednesday in Manheim, the group spends time doing crafts. “Then on our fourth Tuesday in Columbia, it’s our game night, and that’s usually just a hysterical night of fun,” Lindsey stated. Lindsey started her ministry in Columbia three years ago and launched the Manheim program in January 2020. She noted that 4C is faith-based, but “not faith pushed,” and is open to any women. “We don’t usually have specific topics we’ll discuss at a meeting, but we do try to stay positive and within our limits of helping,” she stated. “If there are resources or tools these ladies need beyond what we can offer, we get them help.” When she’s not ministering to women, Lindsey can be found at Creative Inspirationz, a gallery she owns located at 23 N. artist on site,” she explained. “The goal of my gallery is to make art for working-class people. Hardworking people deserve fine art in their homes, not just prints but originals, and it shouldn’t have to take your entire paycheck to get it.” Lindsey said she sees great things in store for 4C as the program continues to thrive. “ We’re working to build women up and make them stronger, which in turn is building up our community,” she stated. “We are so quick to tear each other down, and it can be so hard to build each other up, but we are trying to change that. We are empowering women to be the best God wants them to be.” For more information on 4C or Creative Inspirationz, visit www.artbyheather lindsey.com or search for “4C Ministry” on Facebook.
