Manheim Wrestling Team Raises Money For Food Pantry By Francine Fulton

Recognizing the fact that area food pantries are especially in need of support at this time, the wrestling team from Manheim Central High School recently held a fundraiser that netted $6,400 for the Manheim Central Food Pantry. Head coach Billy Chamberlain presented the donation to pantry volunteer Nancy Auker on April 30. The wrestling team held a one-week “flash raise” in April, with all of the proceeds going to the pantry. “The (wrestling) program was going to match all donations, dollar for dollar, up to $1,000,” explained Chamberlain. “In just one week we raised over $5,000, (which resulted in more than) $6,000

FIA Offers Opportunity To Support Relief Efforts While many local residents may be feeling the effects of staying home due to COVID-19 restrictions, Friends in Action (FIA), a nonprofit headquartered in Middletown, is offering an opportunity to have a global impact.

Sharing Her Gifts By Ann Mead Ash

Since 1992, FIA has used infrastructure projects as a platform to share the Gospel with unreached people groups in extremely remote areas. On April 6, Cyclone Harold, a Category 5 cyclone and the second-largest storm in Vanuatu’s history, almost leveled the South Pacific island country. To the people in Vanuatu’s hundreds of NiVan villages, some of whom still wear leaves or traditional loincloths for clothing and survive on subsistence farming, the storm was catastrophic. Bryanna Still has always loved music. “I began my interest in music at a really young age,” said Bryanna. “I grew up listening to soulful old rhythm and blues and a lot of ’70s and ’80s music. Having that start really inspired me to be passionate about music.” In the fall, the Dayspring Christian Academy senior will head to Edinboro University in northern Pennsylvania to begin a double major in art and music therapy, an ambitious eight-year program that will earn her a doctorate in those subject areas. Bryanna’s journey to this point has not been likely, but her talents, love of art and music, and determination to succeed have helped her discover her potential and have influenced others, such as Diana Vuolo, founder/executive director of SWAN (Scaling Walls A Note at a Time), to take notice. SWAN is an after-school See SWAN pg 2

Bryanna Still of Lancaster, a senior at Dayspring Christian Academy, plans to use her musical and artistic talents to help others as she matriculates at Edinboro University in the fall with the goal of becoming an art and music therapist.

That’s the real story. It was amazing to see the love pour in.”

couldn’t invest myself in a music class, but I started getting instruments of my own,” she recalled, noting that her neighbors on Green Street in Lancaster offered her old instruments to try or practice on. When she was 10, Bryanna started taking violin lessons and participating in rhythm classes through SWAN. After completing a SWAN event at DoubleTree by Hilton Resort in Willow Street in 2013, Bryanna was waiting for her ride and singing along to “No One” by Alicia Keys as it played over the lobby speaker. According to Bryanna, Vuolo heard the singing and was impressed. “Diana came over and said, ‘ We’re getting you (voice) lessons.’ That’s what started my singing career,” said Bryanna. Vuolo recognized Bryanna’s intelligence as well as her talent, and SWAN helped to secure a scholarship for her to attend Dayspring Christian Academy in Mountville. Vuolo recalled that Bryanna’s grandmother, with whom she had been living, died in 2013 shortly before Bryanna was scheduled to sing the national anthem on the pitcher’s mound of the Barnstormers’ home stadium. The 11-year-old bravely completed the task and six months later soloed with the Dayspring Honors Choir in front of 2,500 people at the school’s Remember America Speaker Series event featuring Dr. Ben Carson. In the summer of 2018, SWAN held a summer camp, which provided 120 hours of instruction to local children. Bryanna was looking for a productive way to spend her summer, and she became a

camp volunteer, assisting the teachers. After the SWAN camp ended, the teachers she had worked with suggested she be hired as a teacher for the SWAN team, and she began leading group lessons at Price and Lafayette elementary schools. Vuolo noted that the teachers were acutely aware of Bryanna’s character and skill. “Her ability to work with traumatized children and their behavioral and scholastic failures convinced me she will indeed be a great music and art therapist someday,” said Vuolo. Bryanna credits her father, Clifford Still, with helping her to develop her interest in art. Clifford was incarcerated most of Bryanna’s life, and he is now deceased. “My dad would send me letters with drawings, or he would ask me to draw something and send it back. That is how I connected with my father,” Bryanna recalled. “I couldn’t sing to my dad, but I could draw for him, and I wanted to practice my art and get better at it. I wanted my art to be an expression of who I was and to really echo my goals in life.” Looking ahead, Vuolo believes Bryanna’s past will affect her future in positive ways. “She is a woman of faith and has chosen to … direct the pain of her life to help others,” Vuolo said. “I have witnessed her tremendous successes such as the many times that she has stepped up ... front of audiences to not only perform, but to be an ambassador and spokesperson for the many children affected by parental incarceration and trauma. Her love for others fuels that bravery.”

I was scared we all would die,” shared a NiVan village woman, recalling her village’s harrowing tale of survival. Partnering with missionaries, national pastors, and workers in the region, FIA is raising funds to secure cyclone relief supplies for the villages of Suranda, Mataloi, and Valui. Food bundles of tin tuna, rice, and noodles feed a family of eight for a week, totaling less than $3.25 per person daily. Recovery bundles - consisting of nails, hammers, handsaws, shovels, machetes, and twine and averaging less than $5 per villager - provide building supplies for an entire village to create new homes. “This effort is something everyone can take part in even from the safety of their couches at home. shredded into barren sticks, entire villages were wiped out, roads were destroyed by flooding, and mudslides and debris caused a delay in the efforts to account for hundreds of villagers. Any food gardens and crops were decimated. To cope, people foraged what was left of gardens and root crops for food. Rivers and creeks have been used as water sources, but contamination from livestock has led to waterborne illnesses. “We’ve been eating what we can find on the ground, but that will soon be gone. I don’t know how we will survive,” a NiVan man speaking his native Bislama tongue told FIA missionary partners in the area. An estimated 80% to 90% of the villagers’ bamboo huts with grass-thatched roofs were destroyed. There is little to no palm leaf left, and it will take two to three years to regrow. With no income to buy building supplies, the people are in dire need of shelter. “Thirty to forty of us women

“Star Wars” Fans Feed Homeless In Lancaster By Ann Mead Ash

Fulton Bank N.A., a subsidiary of Fulton Financial Corporation, recently announced that, to date, through its participation in the Small Business Association’s (SBA) Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), it is issuing nearly $2 billion in SBA guaranteed loans to more than 9,400 small business, nonprofit and commercial clients. Fulton began accepting applications to the PPP in early April and reopened its application queue when Congress approved a second round of funding after the first round was depleted. In March, U.S. lawmakers passed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act to provide emergency economic relief for businesses that have been negatively impacted by COVID-19. The PPP, which was established by the CARES Act, authorizes banks to provide funding for qualifying small to medium-sized businesses to be used for employee job retention and certain other expenses. Fulton Bank N.A. operates approximately 230 branches in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey and Virginia. Additional information on Fulton Bank can be found at www.fultonbank.com

Kaden Stetler of Lancaster, one of the founders of Rebel Cause, an organization that began feeding homeless people in Lancaster on March 19, credits “Star Wars” with the inspiration behind the group’s mission. “‘Star Wars’ has always been my inner mythology,” explained Stetler. “It’s about helping others and hope and inspiring other people to do the right thing.” Rebel Cause, a group made up of about 15 members living in the Lancaster area and beyond, was founded in 2015 with a dedication to uniting “Star Wars” fans and doing good in the community. The Rebel Cause mission statement reads in part, “We are committed to helping the homeless in Lancaster County with dignity and compassion.” Until recently, Rebel Cause aided local members of the homeless community with regular events. “We sponsored community meals on the weekends and held fundraisers for needs of the homeless community,” said Stetler. “We would use whatever space was available to us, including churches and community centers.” When Gov. Tom Wolf announced that all non-essential businesses would be closed, Stetler found himself out of work. “I knew Rebel Cause was in a position to do something (for the homeless),” said Stetler. “We started the very next day making food and handing it out to the homeless, and through that I became officially connected with the city to use one area to serve meals.” See Rebels pg 6

Chamberlain said he was pleased at how quickly the fundraiser came together. “I was dropping off food at the pantry, and after the third week, I thought we could do something more,” he stated. “The booster club put it together in less than an hour, and the community jumped on it.” The Manheim Central Food Pantry, located at 334 W. Gramby St., Manheim, provides food and personal care items to registered clients once each month, based on family size. The food pantry is currently in need of donations, including peanut butter, canned pasta, crackers, canned vegetables, tuna fish and spaghetti sauce, as well as diapers in all sizes. Rebel Cause volunteers hand out dinners each evening of the week, including weekends, at 6:30 p.m. from the sidewalk on the Beaver Street side of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, which is located at 119 S. Prince St., Lancaster. Food for the meals is donated by a large number of area contributors. The dinners are cooked at Rumplebrewskin’s, located at 834 N. Plum St. in Lancaster, a restaurant that has been closed by the COVID-19 restrictions. According to Stetler, about five volunteers arrive at the restaurant daily around 2 p.m. to start cooking. “We package meals at 5:30 and head to St. Mary’s around 6 p.m.,” reported Stetler. Since the group members began providing meals, they have given out an average of 700 to 1,000 meals weekly. In addition to handing out meals, Rebel Cause has opened a day center at Crossroads Mennonite Church at 401 Church St., Lancaster. The day center is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. The center offers coffee, snacks, movies, books, art classes and art therapy, yoga classes, and live music. “We have a 20-person limit, and we are close to full each day,” Stetler said. Stetler noted that about 20 volunteers per day take part in the efforts to hand out meals and run the day center. To promote safety and comply with Pennsylvania COVID-19 recommendations, volunteers wear masks reminiscent of “Star Wars” characters and also hand them out to those who need them. The masks are made by MADS Enterprises in Lancaster, and Stetler reported that about 300 masks had been given away by mid-April. Readers who would like to know more about Rebel Cause may visit http://rebelcauselancaster.com or search for “Rebel Cause Lancaster” on Facebook.

the wrestling team has participated in a community service project. The team previously raised money for A Week Away, a Lancaster County nonprofit organization founded by the late Caleb Walker, who passed away from cancer. The family later continued the foundation in his name. “Families who are going through cancer are sent away for a one-week vacation, and all costs are paid for,” noted Chamberlain. “We raised $5,000 for them during the school year.” He added that the Manheim community has been particularly helpful whenever a fundraiser is held. “The community supports us, and we give back to them as much as we can,” he stated. “Manheim is truly a special place. Everyone knows their neighbors, and everyone helps out.”

Partnership Provides Meals Good Samaritan Services partnered with eight Phoenixville restaurants and seven Ephrata restaurants for Good Sam Restaurant Week, which was held from May 11 to 18. Prior to COVID-19, many individuals and groups would cook meals on-site at Good Samaritan shelters or deliver homemade meals. These practices are no longer allowed due to social distancing regulations, but many supporters have been delivering takeout meals to shelter facilities. During Good Sam Restaurant Week, supporters were encouraged to purchase takeout from local restaurants and have it delivered to the organization’s shelters.

Restaurants providing takeout were featured to encourage donors and individuals to support their local economy while providing meals to participants in local shelters. Community members are invited to continue purchasing takeout from local restaurants and having it delivered to Good Samaritan Services shelters throughout the month of May. Those who would like to participate can sign up at www.goodsam services.org/2020/05/good -sam-supports-local-businesses to reserve a day to deliver meals. Good Samaritan Services provides a full continuum of care to individuals

CPFB Gets Grant The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB) announced it received a $100,000 grant from the PNC Foundation to aid in its response to the COVID-19 crisis. The gift will be used to help meet the needs of food insecure residents of central Pennsylvania during the COVID-19 crisis. To feed children and their families, as well as all those facing hunger during this time, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is packing and distributing boxes of crisis response food. All crisis response boxes contain approximately 25 pounds of shelfstable food as well as fresh milk, produce, and meat. To reduce barriers, the CPFB provides all crisis response food to its partners at no cost. The funding from the PNC Foundation will help underwrite the costs of procuring, packing, and distributing the crisis response food. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and PNC share a large footprint in central Pennsylvania. The food bank serves 27
