Fun For The Whole Family BY CATHY MOLITORIS

hen Iron-Leg Corp. does something, the nonprofit goes big, said Sean Laukhuff, vice president. The organization’s latest fundraiser has a little bit of everything. “We’re calling it a Car Show, Family Day and Cornhole Tournament,” Sean said of the event which will be held on Saturday, May 28. The festivities will feature fun for people of all ages and will run from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. at Lancaster Liederkranz, 722 S. Chiques Road, Manheim.

The event will include carnival games, a magician, a balloon artist and face painting, along with food trucks, including Halo’s Kitchen, Krazy Kones and Cupcakes by Casey. A cash bar will be available as well, along with a silent auction and giveaways throughout the day. Entertainment will be provided by DJ Bill Coder as well as 10 Gauge, which will perform acoustic funk from 3 to 5 p.m. The entertainment will conclude with a show by Philly Keys, a dueling piano act that will perform from 7 to 10 p.m.

A cornhole tournament will be open to teams and will feature cash prizes. Registration for the cornhole tournament will be held from noon to 12:45 p.m. A car show will be held at the event as well, with prizes and trophies for the winners. The top prize for the car show will be called Parker’s Pick and will be chosen by Iron-Leg president Matthew Millhouse’s son, Parker, in whose honor the organization was started. Parker, 9, was born without his right leg. Iron-Leg Corp. became an official nonprofit in April 2021, and it raises funds to help children and youths age 18 and younger obtain advanced prosthetics and receive therapy to learn how to use them. Previous fundraisers have helped the organization purchase a prosthetic hand for an 11-year-old boy in York, and the group has a 3-yearold Lancaster boy on its list for a prosthetic hand as well. Each prosthetic can cost between $10,000 and $50,000, Sean said, explaining that Iron-Leg commits to providing new prosthetics for the recipient as the child grows, up until he or she reaches age 18. He noted that IronLeg has set a goal of raising $30,000 at the family day. Giving back comes naturally to Sean, who learned the importance of supporting the local community from watching his uncle, Ken Laukhuff, who helped to create the local Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy. Other events organized by Iron-Leg include an annual golf tournament held in September. “This day is going to be so much fun, and we’re really counting on the generosity of the public,” Sean said of the family day, which will feature free admission. “Our motto is ‘Giving kids a helping hand and a leg to stand on,’ and we want to continue to do that right here in our community.” For more information on the Car Show and Family Day, search for “Iron-Leg Corp” on Facebook or visit www.ironleg.org.

Scholarship Winners Seek To Make A Difference BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Rachel Hollinger and Bailey Garman want to make a difference in the lives of others. Both seniors at Manheim Central High School will have the opportunity to do that when they pursue further education in the medical field after graduation. And they’ll be getting financial assistance as well. Both were selected as winners of the

Robert C. Stirling Scholarship, presented by Northwest EMS. Rachel, who plans to attend the Lancaster campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College and become a nurse, said her chosen career path is a recent goal. The daughter of Rick and Trina Hollinger of Manheim, she grew up heavily involved in agriculture programs, including working on a dairy farm and showing dairy beef and See Scholarship pg 3

However, a car accident about 18 months ago set Rachel on a new path. “I really appreciated the way I was treated by everyone, from the paramedics and EMTs to the nursing staff,” she recalled. Her experience inspired her to pursue a career in nursing. Attending HACC will also allow her to stay close to home and continue to participate in local agriculture events. He’s also president of both the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society. Like Rachel, he didn’t always plan on a career in medicine, but events over the past two years changed his mind. “During the height of COVID, I kept seeing news reports of how hard everyone was working and how understaffed hospitals were and how unappreciated people in the medical community felt,” he stated. “I wanted to help. the son of Brett and Jen Garman of Manheim. Northwest EMS community outreach manager Lori Shenk said the decision to selecte Rachel and Bailey for the scholarship was an easy one. “This was pretty much a unanimous decision. There was little debate, because everyone liked these two,” she remarked, noting that the scholarship committee reviews the applications blind, with no identifying information on the applicants. “They look at who best represented themselves in the application, who followed directions, who submitted a wellwritten application, and who made a good case for themselves.” The scholarship is named for Bob Stirling, a lifetime member of the Manheim Veterans Memorial Ambulance Association. Manheim Ambulance merged with Northwest in 2013. The scholarship is open to anyone in the Manheim Central School District who is pursuing further education in the medical field, including adults going back to college.

Lady Barons 2nd in League Track Championships

Photos by Cheri Sine

Malea Stoner, left, and Landon McGallicher run the high hurdles for the Barons in the Lancaster-Lebanon League Championships at Hempfield on May 13. BY ERIC PYLES

If you are familiar with the high school track and field calendar you know that May brings postseason meets to the forefront. For Manheim Central that all starts with a trip to Hempfield for the L-L Championship Meet, held this year on May 13th and 14th. The boy’s team finished the two-day affair in a tie for 10th with Warwick, with both teams collecting 20 team points. The Lady Barons collected a whopping 103.5 points good enough for a solid second place behind McCaskey (138) and in front of Warwick (72). The Lady Barons podium parade included 16 trips from nine different athletes. Madison Knier collected four of them, splitting her hardware between gold and silver. Knier took gold in the long jump and triple jump with her efforts in the high jump and javelin falling just off the pace but still good for second place. Malea Stoner and Abbie Reed also made four trips to the podium with the pair enjoying the same four trips. Stoner was the top finisher in the 300H field but missed going double hurdle gold after

taking silver in the 100H. Reed joined her teammate on both medal stands, finishing third in both events. The pair also picked up a bronze for their work in the 1600m relay and an eighth-place medal for their work in the 400m relay. Milan Snell was also part of both relay teams while picking up a solo fifth place medal for a 59.51 in the 400m. Sarah Forry was the final member of the 1600m relay while Rachel Nolt served the same for the 400m relay. Nolt tacked on a bronze in the long jump, giving Manheim a 1-3 finish in the event. Bella Sensing added a fifth place in the pole vault while Laci Nelson was the final medal winner in the field, finishing second in the shot put. Liz Voegele finished the medal winning on the track joining Stoner and Reed on the 100H podium with a sixth-place finish and the 300H podium with a fifth-place finish. For the boy’s it was Kahlen Watt and Landon McGallicher leading the way with two medals each. The pair were joined by Larry Marley and Bode Sipe for an eighth place run in the 400m relay while going solo for their other medal. McGallicher garnered

silver in the 110H while Watt took seventh in the 100m. Tyler Fahnestock added a fifthplace finish in the shot put. BASEBALL The baseball team kicked off the postseason the same way they closed out their regular season, with a loss to Manheim Township. The Barons dropped their regular season finale to Township on May 10th, then opened their postseason on the 14th by facing the same Blue Streak squad. Central was not quite able to crack the Township code but they did get closer, falling 2-1 in the L-L quarterfinal tilt just days after dropping a 7-0 regular season finale. Connor Rohrer took the hard luck loss after allowing two runs on just four hits and two walks to go with six strikeouts. Central managed just two hits, both coming in the bottom of the seventh. Collin Thompson connected for a one-out double with Ty Clugston subbing in as the courtesy runner who then scored on Jared Murray’s twoout single. VOLLEYBALL The boys’ volleyball team closed out their regular season on May 11th, falling to

Garden Spot by a 3-2 final. The loss put the Barons at 8-5 and sixth in the final District 3-2A rankings, setting them up for a rematch with Lancaster Mennonite in the D32A quarterfinals. As for the loss to Spot, it appeared that Manheim was going to sweep the Spartans in the regular season series after posting wins of 25-18 and 25-14 in games two and three but Garden Spot had other ideas. They regained their game one form where they opened with a 25-21 victory to tie the match at 2-2 with a 25-19 game four win before ending things with a 15-7 victory. Barend Oostdam capped his first team all-section one allstar nod with an 11 kill, three block game. Dylan Musser had 18 assists and two blocks while Trent Groff added seven kills and seven digs. John Wenger, who ended up on the second team all-section one squad, added 23 digs and two aces. Jacob Moyer, who joined Wenger on the second team all-section one squad had 10 kills and 10 digs. Creative Choreography BY ANN MEAD ASH

Connie Dienner, founder of Cavod, a performing arts school located in New Holland, likes to point out that one of the organization’s missions is to value the Godgiven gifts in each person and then to work to develop those gifts under Cavod’s goal to “Create With Purpose.” Those concepts will be on display when Cavod holds its Cavod Academy will hold its yearly dance concert on two consecutive nights at Lancaster Mennonite School’s Calvin annual spring dance concert and Janet High Fine Arts Center. at Lancaster Mennonite

School’s Calvin and Janet High Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Thursday, June 16, and Friday, June 17, at 7 p.m. each evening. “It’s a representation of all we do,” said Dienner, noting that the presentation spans two nights in order to accommodate the 350 students, age 3 through adult, who will take part. “The concert is a celebration of what they have accomplished throughout the year.” Dienner noted that perfor-

mances in the genres of tap, ballet, modern, jazz, worship dance, hip-hop, and creative movement will be featured under professional lighting with bright and colorful costumes. The show will exhibit the talents of both students and teachers. “People say this is completely different from any other dance concert they have seen because it’s done very creatively,” said Dienner. “Our teachers are amazing choreographers, so we may do tap with a musical theater theme or ballet with a Broadway theme.” Dienner said that the efforts to make the recital

more interesting have garnered positive feedback from attendees. The 2022 dance concert will also feature a short film on the history of Cavod. MakeFilms of Lancaster produced the video, which begins with Cavod’s roots in a barn in the Pequea Valley area of the Welsh Mountains. Cavod later moved to a location on West Main Street in New Holland, then to its present spot in the New Holland Shopping Center location. The Cavod branch at Supply, 280 S. Oak St., Manheim, opened in 2021. See Cavod pg 12

Pelvic Health . / 0 +) 1 ), 0 "

Join us June 1st Since our founding in 1954, Black Rock Retreat’s mission has been spreading the gospel and strengthening the church. Over the years, more than 850 campers received full or partial sponsorship through the Black Rock Retreat Sponsorship Fund. This year, through partnerships with inner city organizations and churches, Black Rock Retreat will launch our first ever URBAN DAY CAMP. This will allow more inner-city kids to have the opportunity to experience summer camp.

Brian Dawkins former Eagles defensive back

Black Rock will provide bus transportation to a partnering church just minutes away from where the kids live. Their ballfield will be beautifully and creatively transformed into a place where kids can be kids! Lunch and snacks will be served daily, and the children will have the opportunity to participate in archery, games, and more. From 9:30am to 3:30pm throughout the month of June, we aim to serve 150 kids in the first year alone.

Batman To Make An Appearance

Batman high fives a young fan in Lancaster County.

Batman - the Batman who is scheduled to make an upcoming appearance at the Lititz Historical Foundation (LHF) - has a bit of information to share about his friend and fellow crimefighter, Superman. “In the DC Comics universe, the Superman logo (on Superman’s chest) is not an ‘S,’” said Batman. “It is a symbol of hope from Krypton (Superman’s home planet).” The Dark Knight may share other pieces of bat wisdom when he visits LHF at the invitation of local super historian Cory Van Brookhoven, president of LHF. Batman will be at the organization’s headquarters, 137 E. Main St., Lititz, on Friday, June 10, from 5 to 8 p.m. Van Brookhoven connected with Batman via Alfred, Batman’s assistant, to arrange the appearance. The logo Superman wears on his chest is also close to Batman’s heart, as Batman is closely associated with Symbol of Hope (SOH Lancaster), an organization seeking to

time thing.” Noting that comic book characters are not often seen in the Lancaster area, the Caped Crusader stated that while Lancaster is not Gotham, he feels close ties to the county, where he has a history in different aspects of law enforcement. Speaking on the Batphone so his location could not be traced, the superhero pointed out that a Bat-signal to light up local skies is in the works. Asked about his true relationship with Batgirl, Batman chuckled, but he noted that his sometimes crimefighting partner, who is in

provide emotional support to children and families fighting childhood illness. “Our main mission is to build a Hero Headquarters tailored to each visiting child’s favorite superhero,” said Batman. “Let’s say there’s a child who wants to meet Wonder Woman. We would invite (the child) to visit and the inside of the building would be completely tailored to her (wishes).” Batman went on to say there would be Wonder Woman toys, games, and, of course, a visit from Wonder Woman herself. “Everything should be as realistic as possible,” said Batman. “It’s a once-in-a-life-

reality Commissioner Gordon’s daughter, may be joining him in some upcoming appearances. “I love being Batman,” said the World’s Greatest Detective. “There’s a satisfaction in being in front of a child who has never seen a superhero in real life … just to see the expression on the kids’ faces.” The LHF visit from Batman will include opportunities for free selfies with the Bat.
