A Call To Serve And Protect BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Like many of their peers, the members of Mastersonville Volunteer Fire Company are struggling to recruit help. To remedy the problem, the fire company will hold an open house from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Monday, June 7, at the station, 2121 Meadow View Road, Manheim.

“The goal of this open house is to engage the community,” said Lori Shenk, assistant secretary. “It’s an open invitation to come say hi and see what we’re all about.” When the station moved to its current location, it hosted an open house in 2019, but the June 7 event will be less formal, Lori explained. “It’s going to be fun, informative and interactive in a safe way,” she See Protect pg 5

We’ll have an in-house social worker as well.” Services will be individualized to meet the needs of each woman, providing the support for her to eventually live on her own, she said. Although the home was already set up to house many people, lots of work was needed to prepare it for its new purpose. The entire interior was painted; floors were replaced throughout; walls were removed to make rooms bigger; and updated security features, including cameras and smoke detectors, were

Inspiration To Be Found At Power Camp BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Kids, get ready for “a week of inspiration and perspiration.” That’s how the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) describes Power Camp, a coed four-day sports camp for children ages 8 to 12. The Lancaster FCA will host Power Camp at two locations this summer. From Monday, June 14, through Thursday, June 17, camp will be held at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Hol-

land. Sport choices at the New Holland camp are basketball, field hockey, soccer, baseball or lacrosse. Camp will also be held from Monday, June 21, through Thursday, June 24, at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road. Sport choices in Manheim are basketball, volleyball, soccer or baseball. Each camp will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and lunch will be provided. “It’s a great camp for kids to

try a sport for the first time, under the supervision of quality coaches,” said Diana Roth, area representative for FCA. “You don’t have to be the best athlete or be super competitive. It’s just a way to try a sport and have fun.” This is the third year the camp will be offered in New Holland and the first year for the camp in Manheim. “Our goal is to eventually have four Power Camps at different regions in the county,” Roth noted. Christianity is the focus of the camp, which includes worship time as well as devotions. This year’s camp theme is ‘Pursue,’ which comes from 1 Timothy and encourages fleeing from evil to pursue a godly lifestyle. “It’s a fun-filled camp,” Roth remarked, adding that whole-group friendly competitions in things like Minute to Win It games and Dance Dance Revolution are featured, along with guest speakers. The camp also has an outreach component. “We ask the girls and boys to bring in coins, and it’s a competition to see who can bring in the most to raise money for our

partnerships in Southeast Asia,” she explained. Founded in 1954, FCA has a goal of seeing the world transformed by Christ through the work of coaches and athletes. In the four years since FCA came to Lancaster County, the group has created huddles led by students at schools throughout the region, including Garden Spot, Pequea Valley, Penn Manor and Manheim Central. “I’ve seen at Pequea Valley the growth that occurs because the huddles are student-led, versus me coming in as an adult,” said Adam Burns, area representative for FCA. “It’s inspiring watching them encourage and equip their fellow students.” Burns said one of the best things about Power Camp has been the lasting impact it’s had on campers. “Many of the campers from our first camp have now become huddle leaders,” he stated. “I’ve had campers who, as soon as camp ends, say, ‘We can’t wait to sign up for next year.’” For more information on Power Camp or to register, visit https://lancaster fca.org/camp-2.

There are few things in this world that trigger a case of nostalgia for baby boomers like drive-in movie theaters. But, it isn’t only boomers who appreciate these icons of entertainment; Gen Xers and millennials are packing the kids in the car or setting out for the perfect date night. Seriously, if you want to score some points with your significant other, a surprise trip to one of Pennsylvania’s drive-ins would be a great departure from the same old date-night routine. Pennsylvania was an early adopter of the outdoor movie theater craze. In April 1934, Shankweiler’s Drive-In in Orefield, Lehigh County, became the second drive-in movie theater to open in the U.S. Today, it is the oldest operating drive-in in the country. The Keystone State ranks second behind New York in the number still in operation. The evolution of technology, like the switch from window speakers to radio sound and the move from traditional to digital screens, has improved the quality of picture and sound. But the essence of the drive-in experience hasn’t changed in more than 70 years - waiting for the sun to go down, the smell of freshly popped popcorn and making memories with family and friends. My own memories include taking in a movie with a carload of friends when I was a teenager and then going back to the Columbia Drive-In (no longer in operation) as a young mom with my husband and our children watching from the open hatchback of our car. Fundraiser To Provide COVID Relief In Bolivia

Protect from pg 1 stated. “We’re going to have hands-on activities under guidance and supervision.” There will be three stations set up for the open house. A fire suppression station will show how engines and tankers provide water in rural locations and showcase other firefighting tactics. A rescue station will feature a car to demonstrate vehicle extraction methods, and a third station will share information about the company’s Quick Response Service (QRS), which is a medical response unit. “ We intend to make all three stations interactive by encouraging those attending to participate,” Lori noted. “Some of those interactive activities might be flowing water and some hands-on work with the rescue tools.” Mastersonville Volunteer Fire Company serves the Manheim area as well as parts of Mount Joy. Volunteers meet at 6:30 p.m. on Mondays for training, said Matt Shenk, committee member, and no experience is necessary to volunteer. “We know people are volunteers, so you can come when you have time,” he stated. There are opportunities for going out into the field and

fighting fires, but there are also volunteer opportunities for office work, noted Sara Duttera, secretary. “I’m an administrative volunteer. I help with fundraisers,” she explained. “I don’t want to run into burning buildings, but this is a way I can help. There is something for everyone here.” Capt. Eric Shields added that volunteering not only gives him a sense of pride, but also provides a way to support his neighbors. “It’s a way to give back to the community I live in,” he stated. “It’s a way to protect and serve.” Matt, who has been a firefighter for 40 years, said the station has become a second home, and he encourages anyone with an interest in giving back to join the station as a volunteer. “We are really a community within a community,” he remarked. “We all know each other, and we know each other’s families. We go through good calls and bad calls together. We take care of each other, and we’ve got each other’s backs.” For more information on Mastersonville Volunteer Fire Company or the open house, search for “Mastersonville Fire Co” on Facebook.

A local youth recently undertook a project to aid Bolivian orphans as part of a larger COVID-19 outreach through Friends In Action Intl. (FIA), a nonprofit headquartered in Middletown. The project began when Lily Medich, 11, of York, learned through FIA’s website about the great need in Bolivia. Northern Bolivia in particular has been significantly affected during the pandemic and continues to be severely under-resourced. The town hospital has a maximum capacity of 35 beds and one ventilator, and many people from nearby villages along the Amazon River travel two days to find medical items as simple as acetaminophen. Bolivian doctors have run out of many medications. “I can’t imagine living somewhere where there are no food banks, no shelters, or no clothing banks to help the people. I just knew I had to help in any way I could,” commented Lily. Lily decided to raise funds to help the Hogar de Andre de Esperanza y Alegria Orphanage. Due to another round of lockdowns, the children had not been able to get new shoes in quite some time, so Lily set a goal to raise $2,000 so each of the close to 100 orphans could receive a new pair of shoes. Working from her interest in art and fashion, Lily decided to hand-paint bayong bags her Thai aunt helped her purchase from a woman-owned Thai business. “I was excited that purchasing the purses was also going to bless the artisans who handmade them in Thailand. It’s like a double blessing,” Lily explained. Starting with 16 bags, Lily used acrylic paints to decorate

ADVERTISE IN

the purses with her own design or with different flower patterns she learned through YouTube tutorials. By producing something both beautiful and useful, she hoped other women and girls would join her fundraising efforts. As of May 3, Lily had raised $1,200 toward the effort by asking family and friends to donate online to FIA’s work in Bolivia. Community members interested in buying any of the remaining bags may email Lily at ssmedich@comcast.net. Direct donations to FIA’s ministries in Bolivia can be made at www.fiaintl.org/donate/. Lily hopes to have the full $2,000 raised by early June, so donations are sought in May. FIA provided close to $45,000 in 2020 for COVID relief to the hard-hit town of Guayaramerin, in northern Bolivia. National pastors who partner with FIA have been using contributions to dis-

tribute food and medicine to the small villages in Cauchuela Esperanza and Primero de Mayo. A caravan of three pickup trucks and a minivan have delivered enough food for more than 150 sick or grieving families. Waves of relief resources continue to be distributed every two weeks.

“(In northern Bolivia), 90% of families (have) at least one person who contracted the virus. The local pastors who partner with us are desperate to offer hope and tangible demonstrations of God’s love to the villagers,” shared Tim Johnston, FIA’s executive director.

Lily Medich displays bags that she hand-painted and planned to sell, with proceeds benefiting Friends In Action Intl.’s relief work in Bolivia.

Dutch Apple To Stage “Beauty And The Beast” Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre will present Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” as its summer show. The musical will be featured from Thursday, June 3, through Wednesday, July 21. “Beauty and the Beast” tells the tale of Belle, a young girl in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a young prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved before time runs out, the curse will be broken, and he will be transformed

into his former self. Based on the Academy Award-winning animated feature, the stage version includes all of the original songs written by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman, such as “Belle,” “Be Our Guest” and “Gaston,” along with new songs by Menken and Tim Rice. The original Broadway production ran for more than 13 years and was nominated for nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical. For the second time with

Dutch Apple continues to follow state guidelines and mandates while seeking to provide a meal and entertainment in a safe and socially distanced environment. Tickets are now on sale and can be reserved by calling 717-898-1900, visiting the aforementioned website or stopping at the box office at 510 Centerville Road, Lancaster.

Memorial Day from pg 1

Members of the Manheim VFW and auxiliary (from left) Bill King, Mark Fisher, Tracy Tunstall and Craig Fisher invite the public to a Memorial Day parade and ceremony.

The parade will feature the Manheim Central High School band, as well as local sports teams, Scouts, fire departments, veterans and the Pennsylvania National Guard. The ceremony will highlight the military service of Manheim residents. “Everything will be based around Memorial Day and honoring the people who have served our country and who died for our freedom,” said Bill King, former post commander, who will be the event’s master of ceremonies. “We’ll be reading the honor roll of everyone from the borough who has passed in conflict since World War II.” Each year, two fallen members of the military are featured in the ceremony, King noted, adding that this year’s honorees are Richard Earl Connelly CQM USN, who was lost during the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, and John Long Jr. CPT USAR, who was killed in an attack on the aircraft carrier Kaiyo in Kyushu, Japan in 1945. “These two lost heroes show the small town of Manheim had their young men and women engaged in World War II throughout the duration of the war, in which 30 military members from Manheim lost their lives,” King remarked. The ceremony will also include a guest speaker, Brig. Gen. Michael E. Wegscheider,

assistant division commander of the 28th Infantry Division of the Pennsylvania National Guard. Winners of the Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen essay contests will also be recognized, poems will be read, and memorial flowers will be distributed by the VFW Auxiliary 5956. Music will be provided by the Manheim Central High School band. King said the VFW welcomes new members as well as invites any veterans to come out for the parade and ceremony. “ We’re always looking for more veterans to join us,” he noted. “They can just come to the parade and walk with us, even if they aren’t a member of our VFW.” Mark Fisher, commander of the Manheim VFW, said holding a ceremony to recognize veterans is important. “We need to honor the sacrifices of these people,” he stated. “Each individual who signed up to serve made an agreement to give his or her life in defense of the freedom we all enjoy. We don’t want their death to be in vain. We want them to know that we remember, we appreciate them, and we honor them.” For more information on the parade and ceremony, search for “Manheim VFW Post 5956 - Cyrus R. Peters Memorial Post” on Facebook.

Barons Knock Off Streaks in L-L Playoffs

BY ERIC G. STARK

It was the game everyone was waiting for, and it didn’t disappoint. Manheim Central pulled off a 3-2 victory in the LancasterLebanon League baseball semifinal against Manheim Township (20-1) last Tuesday night, at Ephrata’s War Memorial Field. As they’ve done all season, the bottom of the Barons (19-1) order came through with clutch hits and turned the lineup over for the top of the order to do damage. Batting eighth, catcher Mason Weaver drove in the winning run in the fifth inning with a single up the middle, scoring Riley McGallicher, who, along with Collin Thompson, walked earlier in the inning. In the fourth, Thompson and Weaver, batting seventh and eighth, respectively, each singled and Drew Mylin sacrificed bunted to move the runners to second and third and turned the lineup over. Lead-off hitter Cam Eberly singled up the middle to score Thompson, making it 2-0. MC started the scoring in the third when Eberly got hit by a pitch and Brady Harbach singled to third. Colton Book sacrifice bunted the runners to second and third and Dylan Yoder knocked in Eberly. The Streaks tied the game at 22 in the fifth, but that’s all they would get, as Book (five hits, four strike outs) and Wyatt Becker (no hits, two strikeouts) combined for a pitching gem. Becker got the last four outs of the game. Defensively, Eberly made a big play at shortstop and Weaver pounced on a ball in front of the plate and made a great throw for a bang-bang play at first. “This is our best game defensively, by far,” Baron’s coach Jason Thompson said. “And the

shortstop play, the catcher play in seventh inning was amazing. So, yeah, our defense picked it up, huge.” In the league quarterfinals on May 15, Manheim scored three runs in the first inning against Solanco en route to a 6-2 win. Book doubled to left to score Eberly, who got hit by a pitch and Yoder had a two-run single to plate Harbach, who walked, and Book. “We really strive for on base percentage,” Jason Thompson said. “We have been doing a nice job with that this year and then walks and then we get a guy with a key hit. I feel like we were a key hit or two from breaking this open, but that’s the playoffs, sometimes.” Connor Rohrer gave up four hits and notched five strikeouts in the win. Becker entered in the sixth, fanning one, while not allowing a hit. As a tune-up, the Barons beat Conestoga Valley 12-5 on May 13. Pitcher Trey Derck got his third win of the year. He was used more in the latter half of the season, Jason Thompson said, noting that “he’s given us some good innings to give our big guys some rest.” Central trailed 5-3 after three innings but erupted for six runs in the top of the fourth. Collin Thompson started the inning with a walk and Weaver, attempting to sacrifice bunt, was safe on a bad throw. Mylin was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Then Eberly singled up the middle to score Thompson. Yoder delivered the big blow, a two-run double. TENNIS Andrew Rajaratnam and Tyler Snavely drew the number one seed Aiden Mahaffey and Tyler Mahaffey of Palmyra and lost 6-

0, 6-1 on May 14 at Racquet Club West in the District Three Class 3A doubles tournament. “ We played well,” Barons’ coach Ryan Jeckel said. “They executed the game plan. The difference was they (Palmyra) had stronger serves and transitioned well from defense to offense. We wanted to get to the net, and they (Palmyra) did an excellent job lobbying.” Jeckel believed the best opportunity to win was for his tandem to attack and be aggressive. They didn’t make bad errors, he said. They simply lost to a better team, one that eventually won the district crown. TRACK It was a great weekend for the boys’ and girls’ teams at the L-L League meet. The girls finished third with 75 team points. Sophomore Maddie Knier continued her excellent season, capturing two golds and two silvers. She was first in javelin and the long jump. She gained second in the high jump and triple jump, where she secured a personal best of 35-11. “Maddie is such a competitor,” Barons’ coach Ryan Kennedy said. “To do four events in a dual meet is manageable, but four events at a league meet is a challenge. There is so much going on and everything is heightened. “What impressed me the most was on Saturday she did javelin, high jump and long jump. The javelin she did well, but high jump wasn’t her greatest day. She still got silver. But she was not happy with it, being six inches off her personal record. Then she had to come back with long jump and won it. It says a lot about how she was able to recover and perform.” Abby Reed was second in the

100 hurdles and Malea Stoner was inched out of first by a mere .01 in the 300 hurdles. Stoner was third in 100 hurdles. The boys finished fourth with 64 points. Senior Kade Kegarise won the javelin with a toss of 165-3. “He has been consistent and improved every year and throughout this season,” Kennedy said. “He put a lot of work in with the javelin and I liked seeing him win. It was not his best his throw, but it was good.” Kennedy said Mike Wise deserves credit for working with the throwers. Tyler Fahnestock was third in shot put and sixth in the discus. Landon Watson was sixth in shot and fifth in the discus. Landon McGallicher was third in the 110 and 300 hurdles. Nate Reed was second in the 300 hurdles. “I was really pleased with the performances overall,” Kennedy said. “Now is when you want to put it all together and have your best performances in the big meet. It was really a great meet for both teams.” SOFTBALL The Lady Barons lost 14-1 to Elizabethtown on May 13. Manheim had three hits in the contest, including a home run for junior short stop Emma Damon. Besides pitching, where she struck out three batters, junior Gabby Wettig hit a triple. The Bears scored five runs in the second and added four more in the third to blow the game open. MC will compete in districts as the 14th seed. VOLLEYBALL The Barons beat Conestoga Valley 3-1 in the first round of

the league playoffs Friday, May 15 at Hempfield. Game scores were 26-24, 25-23, 24-26 and 25-20. Blake Wagner had 22 kills, Jeremiah Zimmerman had 35 assists and John Wenger added five digs. In the semifinals, Manheim lost to Hempfield 3-0 last Monday. Game scores were 25-13, 2523 and 25-10. Assistant coach Jim Graham said the Barons

were the underdog and spent a lot energy in the second game and had difficulty recovering. “We were running on fumes in that third one,” said Graham, who noted the team will prepare for districts. “But I really liked what I saw in that second game. We were covering the blocks and picking up in the back and it’s just one more time to prove to the guys that they really can play this game and play it well.”

Bringing Loved Ones Home With Project Lifesaver

Lt. Jennifer Brubaker (left) and Pilot Club member Cathy Cieslinski serve the community with Project Lifesaver. BY COURTNEY MENGEL

with 18 municipalities to bring Project Lifesaver to Lancaster County. Lt. Jennifer Brubaker from East Hempfield Township Police Department was one of the first police officers to receive training. “The equipment took time to work with and feel comfortable using,” said Brubaker. “In a moment where lives are at stake, you don’t want to use equipment that you need to think much about operating. You want to get right to work and get moving with it.” Brubaker said she decided to receive training because she has two autistic goddaughters, so she saw value in the program. Project Lifesaver participants wear a personalized transmitter 24/7 on their wrist or ankle that emits a tracking signal on FM radio frequency. When a caregiver calls 911 and reports that a

participant has wandered, a search team triangulates the area and uses a receiver to locate the individual through his or her transmitter. “People should enroll in the program because, although this won’t keep loved ones from wandering, it will serve as a safety net,” explained Cieslinski. “If they wander, this will give us a fighting chance to find them as opposed to finding that needle in a haystack.” Police officers keep profiles on every individual enrolled. “We have these on hand so officers are aware of what the person looks like, what they will possibly wander to, what their disabilities include, and so on,” noted Brubaker. “Sometimes, we will meet individuals enrolled in the program, specifically children, to establish a friendship with them so that in the event of an emergency, they won’t be afraid of us. We want people to see us and know that we mean safety.” Individuals with an official diagnosis can enroll in Project Lifesaver. To request an application for Project Lifesaver, contact Cieslinski at 717-572-2682. The Pilot Club welcomes new members. For more information, visit http://bit.ly /PilotClub or search for “Pilot Club of Lancaster” on Facebook.

Before Project Lifesaver came to Lancaster County on Oct. 20, 2012, an elderly man wandered from his home during the winter. Much effort was put into finding him, but he was not located until a day or two later. He had passed away 250 feet behind his home. “If he would have had a working wristband from Project Lifesaver, we more than likely would have found him,” stated Pilot Club of Lancaster member Cathy Cieslinski. “Project Lifesaver is all about bringing your loved ones home, and we saw a need in our county. Implementing this program in our county was important to our club.” Project Lifesaver is a searchand-rescue program to locate at-risk individuals who wander. Its mission is to use stateof-the-art technology in assisting those who care for individuals with Alzheimer’s, dementia, autism, developmental disorders, Down syndrome, and other brain-related challenges across the United States. According to Project Lifesaver’s data, in over 3,400 searches, Project Lifesaver has achieved a 100% success rate on an average of less than 30 minutes. Police officers use a receiver to locate individuals Pilot Club has partnered through their transmitter.

He said although the show is a staged reading, audiences should expect a fully formed performance. “The only difference is the actors are going to be holding their scripts in their hands,” he explained. “I didn’t require them to memorize their lines, but there will be lighting cues, sound cues, costumes, blocking, all the things you’d expect to see on stage.” Each performance in “The Undercurrent” will also include a partnership with local organizations or theater companies that reflect the values of each play. “Tigers Be Still” focuses on mental

health, and the show will feature a question-and-answer session afterward with members of WellSpan Philhaven. Although the performance is free, donations will be accepted for the organization as well. Additional plays in the staged-reading series are “Pipeline” on Saturday, July 10; “Native Gardens” on Saturday, Aug. 21; and “Blackbird” on Saturday, Nov. 6. Shows will be performed on the theater’s Gallery Stage. Susquehanna Stage is located at 133 W. Market St., Marietta. For more information, visit www.susquehanna stage.com.

ries on stage that reflect the people in our community.” “Tigers Be Still” features a cast of four and focuses on a young woman, Sherry, who is finding her footing in a new job while moving back into her childhood home with her mother and sister. “It’s a great show,” said Liz Checchia, who plays the sister, Grace. “There are beautiful moments within this very comedic show. … It’s very well written, and there are jokes and lots of laughs, but then out of nowhere, these beautiful, dramatic moments happen.” Bob Checchia, who plays Joe, Sherry’s boss, said the show highlights some unusual characters. “The timing and rhythm of this show keeps it flowing with short scenes and dialogue that is quick and fast,” he noted. “There is a quirkiness to the characters.” And, Johnson added, “While everything is happening with the characters in the show, there is a tiger on the loose during all of this.”

Camp GOTR will take place on Monday, June 21, through Friday, June 25, at LCBC Lancaster City at Liberty Place, 313 W. Liberty St., Lancaster. Camp will run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and drop-off will be from 8 to 8:30 a.m. Camp GOTR combines Girls on the Run activities and ideas with all the fun of camp. Throughout the week, campers will build, create, write, discuss, connect, and laugh all while par-

ticipating in games and activities designed to leave them feeling confident and appreciated by their teammates. Campers must be entering the third through fifth grades in the fall to be eligible for this camp. Girls do not need to be past GOTR program participants. All state, CDC, and program host COVID-19 guidelines in place at the time of camp will be followed. Registration is first-come,

first-served. There is a program fee, and financial assistance is available. For details and registration, visit www.gotrlancaster.org. Coaches are also needed. Camp GOTR coaches must have previously coached; be able to attend training on Monday, June 14, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.; and commit to the full week of camp. Junior coaches, students entering 11th or 12th grade, are welcome to apply.
