Mount Hope Plans Chicken Barbecue Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community in Manheim will hold a drivethrough takeout chicken barbecue on Friday, June 12, from 4 to 7 p.m. and on Saturday, June 13, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of LCBC Manheim, 2392 Mount Joy Road, Manheim. The per-meal cost is $12. Each meal will include a half-chicken, a baked potato, a roll and butter, and applesauce. Preorders will be taken and meals will be saved under the name provided when ordered. Attendees will be asked to specify pickup for June 12 or June 13. Prepayment will not be accepted; all payments must be made when picking up the meals. The public is invited. Proceeds will go toward Mount Hope’s Coronavirus Assistance Fund. To preorder, call Kris Wilson at 717-682-8026 or email advancement@ mthopenazarene.org by Saturday, June 6. Due to the current COVID-19

restrictions, those serving meals will follow all CDC guidelines. No handling of money will occur on the days of food pickup. A drop-box will be provided for customers to leave payments in the form of cash or of checks made payable to “Mt. Hope NRC.” Change will not be provided; if change is needed, it will be considered a donation. Mount Hope is a 50-bed skilled nursing facility and rehabilitation center in rural Rapho Township that serves seniors regardless of their ability to pay. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Mount Hope created a Coronavirus Assistance Fund to help cover the unanticipated increased costs of safely providing care for residents. These funds help with the purchasing of personal protective equipment, covering unforeseen expenses related to additional building and cleaning supplies, easing the financial shortfall from reduced giving trends, and

providing for unexpected costs as staff is needed to fulfill roles once held by volunteers. Many in the community have partnered with Mount Hope. Churches in the Manheim area have sewn and provided gowns and face masks, provided monetary assistance, and delivered homemade meals and baked goods. The Manheim Ministerium recently donated $500 to the Coronavirus Assistance Fund. The ministerium, a network of area churches and faith-based nonprofits, has worked for more than 50 years for the Manheim community in times of crisis and as a support to new missions. At Mount Hope, residents receive special care provided by health care workers, including nurses, nursing assistants, housekeepers, dietary and activity personnel, administrators, and directors. Mount Hope is appreciative of the acts of kindness and support from the local community.

Presenting a donation of $500 to Kris Wilson (second from left), Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community director of advancement, are (from left) pastor Blaine Wenger of Ruhl’s United Methodicst Church (UMC) and Manheim Ministerium president; pastor Bill Melone of Manheim BIC Church and ministerium secretary; and pastor John Laughlin of Salem United Methodist Church and ministerium treasurer. Mount Hope will hold a chicken barbecue on June 12 and 13 at LCBC Manheim.

MDS Coordinates Mask Effort

Aaron’s Acres hopes to have a new home at the Hoffer Farm property located adjacent to Pleasant View Retirement Community on North Penryn Road in Manheim. Pleasant View plans to build a cultural center on the property with the goal to complete it by 2022.

Members of the Plain community are working with Mennonite Disaster Service to produce masks for health care workers and others in the county in need. The effort produced more than 20,000 masks in its first week.

Aaron’s Acres Finds Permanent Home In Manheim

By Ann Mead Ash

In 2018, Aaron’s Acres celebrated 20 years of providing socialization and recreation for children and young adults ages 5 to 21 with special needs. The nonprofit organization held camp at the Jewish Community Center in Lancaster until 2013.

Starting in 2014, the program was hosted by the Manheim Community Pool and Memorial Park. In 2019, the six-week camp served 220 campers. For the past several years, Aaron’s Acres has been searching for a permanent home. Risa Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres, had looked at a number of county locations, but See Aaron’s Acres pg 2

In early April, when Larry Stoner, Region 1 operations coordinator with Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS), 583 Airport Road, Lititz, learned that Bird-in-Hand Fabric, owned by Sylvan and Loraine Stoltzfus, had been creating masks for

anyone who requested one in response to the COVID-19 crisis, he was moved to involve MDS to help. “They had been making them for about two weeks out of the kindness of their hearts, and they were giving fabric and getting elastic and (wire) for the nose (to others who were making them),” Stoner explained. nothing suitable had been found. “We really wanted to be part of an inclusive community,” recalled Paskoff. “ We didn’t want … an entire building to ourselves.” In the past year, Paskoff began talking to Jonathan Hollinger, executive director of Pleasant View Retirement Community, 544 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. The retirement community plans to build a cultural center on the Hoffer Farm property across from the memory care and skilled nursing care facilities on North Penryn Road. Pleasant View has invited the Manheim Borough Library to be part of the center, and Paskoff reported that Aaron’s Acres has been invited as well. “Pleasant View will build a building, and we will have a condo relationship,” said Paskoff,

who noted that Aaron’s Acres hopes to utilize up to 7,000 square feet in the building. Paskoff noted that other plans for the cultural center include housing therapeutic alpacas in a barn area, along with sheep, goats, and chickens. Pleasant View also plans to expand a hydroponics program on the site. The farm property where Aaron’s Acres will be located offers additional possibilities to the organization. “We will have farm land to grow herbs, vegetables, and flowers,” said Paskoff, who sees the move as an opportunity to expand the Aaron’s Acres Plus program, which began providing activities for 22- to 30year-olds in early 2019. “Aaron’s Acres has been for ages 5 to 21, but we are going to go to age 30,” said Paskoff. “We want to have

meaningful programs (for individuals in that age group),” she noted, adding that farming, and working with animals, will be options along with taking part in Aaron’s Acres Acts of Kindness Program (Triple AOK), which allows participants with developmental disabilities to give back to others rather than just being recipients of services. “(Our clients) will be able to go into the (retirement) community and play games and have a snack with residents,” said Paskoff, who noted that clients could also volunteer at the library. Paskoff also hopes Aaron’s Acres can open a café to be manned by its participants. In addition to the benefits offered to Aaron’s Acres, Paskoff is excited about the purpose of the cultural center, noting that Hollinger hopes to bring other

nonprofit organizations to the campus. “(It will be) a lot of different organizations coming together to create a strong community with people of all abilities and ages,” said Paskoff. “It’s a dream come true.” Paskoff said that if the way is clear, the cultural center will be completed by 2022. She noted that an aquatics center is planned for completion in 2023. For Paskoff, the move to the new center will signal an important shift for Aaron’s Acres. “The first 20 years, we just grew,” said Paskoff. “Now I feel for the next 20 years, we will launch and take off in a different way.” For more information, readers may visit www.aaronsacres.org. acceptable to the hospital for the health care workers,” said Stoner. “Word was put out on April 3 that we needed volunteers willing to cut the patterns and get (cut material) to sewers,” recalled Stoner, who noted that shortly after that the Groffdale Conference Mennonite Community began cutting and sewing face masks to assist the other sewers. Because the Groffdale community does not drive cars, MDS provided drivers to move material. “On April 7, we started cutting material and getting it to sewers,” Stoner stated, sharing that

the 100 volunteers created 20,000 masks the first week. “We are calling every fabric shop in the county,” said Stoner on April 13, who had traveled to Schaefferstown for material as well as to pick up 70 rolls of quarterinch elastic. “We are getting connected with the right people to know where to buy things we need,” he noted. By mid-April, MDS was being asked to help make clinical masks for WellSpan. “The goal is to have groups manufacture 100,000 per week for the next eight weeks starting (the week of April 13),” said Stoner, who noted that the masks, which will be used by doctors, will be used one time and then thrown away. “The pattern is a little different and the material is not fabric,” shared Stoner, who said that he believes the volunteers can manufacture 25,000 of the masks per week. Stoner is recruiting members of the Plain community to help with the mask effort, and he has also been spreading information about COVID-19 best practices. “We are trying to get the word out about wearing masks, social distancing, and washing of hands … to take this seriously,” he said. More information about the MDS response to COVID-19 may be found at https://mds.mennonite.net. Readers who are interested in learning more about the mask-making effort may call 717-823-0952.

Bird-in-Hand resident Manny Flaud, who is associated with the Lancaster MDS unit, knows the Stoltzfuses, and he contacted them on behalf of MDS. “(The Stoltzfuses) were overwhelmed with thousands of requests (for masks),” recalled Stoner, who noted that requests had come from the Lancaster County Prison, Red Rose Transit Authority, and Water Street Mission, along with retirement homes. “Everyone was desperate for face masks made of fabric.” Stoner noted that the sewers associated with the fabric shop had produced about 20,000

masks in the two weeks prior to MDS becoming involved in production. On April 3, a conference call with the MDS unit board was held. Initially, MDS representatives made a decision to help the fabric store cut the material for masks. “We got a pattern from WellSpan (Ephrata Community) Hospital (for an approved fabric mask),” said Stoner, who noted that specifications included the type of material to be used and the length of elastic. “ We switched to their pattern as soon as we understood that it was

Bailey Coach staff members have disinfected 500 first responder vehicles since April 7. Bailey Coach, based in Spring Grove, celebrated and recognized its volunteers for disinfecting 500 first responder vehicles since April 7. A small ceremony was held at Bailey Coach on May 5. As part of its mission to give back to the community, Bailey Coach dedicated one of its specialized electrostatic sprayers to be used on Mondays through Fridays from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. to disinfect first responder vehicles. The process to disinfect takes two to five minutes. The staff members who have been disinfecting the vehicles are volunteers from the Bailey Coach staff or their families. Bailey Coach plans to operate the free disinfecting to serve first responders in York, Adams and Lancaster counties as long as the disinfecting treatments are needed to keep the area’s first responders healthy due to the COVID19 pandemic. Bailey Coach is a transportation company which diversified in mid-March when 99% of its transportation reservations had been canceled. Now employees travel to

area life-sustaining businesses to provide disinfecting services. Staff members disinfect an average of 2.5 million square feet of space for 50 businesses each week, and on average, they are able to disinfect 15,000 square feet of space per hour with electrostatic sprayers. These sprayers are commonly used in airplanes, cruise ships, hospitals and meat packing facilities. Bailey Coach had been using the sprayers in its vehicles for years to keep passengers safe. The mentors of SCORE Chapter 16 responded swiftly to the COVID-19 crisis, which closed all nonessential businesses in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. An idea that was created from an offer of comentor support by SCORE mentor Steve Darby was later augmented through the talents of mentor subject matter experts Lou Davenport and Rich Bidgood. This led to the creation of a COVID-19 Emergency Funding Mentor Support Team which was able to respond quickly and effectively to both existing clients and a steady stream of new ones. In the month of April, the volunteer mentors of SCORE Chapter 16 offered expert guidance to clients in the small business and nonprofit communities. The chapter noted that total mentoring sessions more than doubled over those of April 2019; the number of

Since 2005, Lancaster County residents have known Global Aid Network (GAiN) as more than a former fish hatchery. Over the decades, the 70,000-square-foot warehouse on Quarry Road in Mount Joy has become a place for volunteers to serve others as they prepare and pack humanitarian aid to go to people in more than 30 countries around the world. Recently GAiN in the United States, the humanitarian ministry of Cru, announced that the ministry changed its name to Unto. The name change came after two years of research, planning and prayer. This change will allow the ministry to more clearly convey its

pursuit to serve people by relieving suffering, restoring dignity and revealing the eternal hope of Jesus. Unto will remain steadfast in its commitment to accelerate spiritual movements through humanitarian kindness, which helps Cru and its partners gain access, build credibility and increase effectiveness in ministry. Unto’s Mount Joy warehouse, known as the Global Logistics Center (GLC), is an integral part of serving more than 2 million people each year. Expressing kindness to people around the world requires a process for transporting humanitarian aid to field partners so they can serve people by meeting their physical

Patient Portal. If patients do not already have a Patient First Portal Account set up, they will receive a temporary code allowing them to create one when they arrive for testing. For most insured patients, there is no out-of-pocket expense for COVID-19 testing. The visit will be submitted to patients’ insurance. Patient First accepts all major insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. For self-pay patients, there is a set cost plus a separate bill from the lab in some cases. The lab determines what, if anything, it bills the patient. Appointments are not needed for visits unrelated to COVID-19 testing. All Patient First centers have taken steps to provide a safe environment for patients and staff, including requiring all patients and staff to wear masks while inside the center, thoroughly disinfecting surfaces throughout the center at regular intervals, requiring frequent handwashing, and limiting visitors to only essential family members. To schedule an appointment at the Lancaster center, readers may call 717-925-2995. Updates about testing sites, instructions for making an appointment, and other information are available at www.patientfirst.com /covid-19-testing.

Also eligible are those who are health care workers or first responders; those who had prolonged contact with - such as living or working closely with - a COVID-19 positive person or a person waiting for COVID-19 test results; those who reside in a nursing home or other congregate living facility; those who are cancer patients who require COVID-19 testing before beginning or resuming treatment; those who are required by their doctor, hospital, or outpatient surgical center to have COVID-19 testing prior to a planned surgery; or those who are required by their employer to have COVID-19 testing prior to beginning or returning to work. Testing is scheduled daily from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 to 6 p.m. All test samples are collected outside of the center. Patients may remain in their vehicles through the entire process. The staff member collecting samples is equipped with proper personal protective equipment (PPE), including an N95 mask, gloves, eye protection, and a gown. Samples are sent to a thirdparty reference lab for testing. Results are generally available in approximately two to five days and accessible on Patient First’s

bulk products are closed. The funding for the food box program will compensate the farms and the food processors to package the products to distribute to families in need. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is poised to deliver the food boxes to its network of nearly 1,000 partner agencies throughout 27 central Pennsylvania counties. The existing infrastructure built through participation in the Pennsylvania Agricultural Surplus Program, the Fill a Glass With Hope fresh milk program, and the MidAtlantic Regional Produce Cooperative means that the food bank is equipped to handle more fresh produce, dairy products, and meat. Farms or other food industry businesses that are interested in working with the food bank and the Farmers to Families Food Box program may contact Beth Hamilton at bhamilton@central pafoodbank.org. The COVID-19 pandemic has posed challenges for both farms and food banks. Farms have seen disruption in the food supply chain and food banks have seen an increase in demand for assistance. A new United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) program is designed to address both concerns simultaneously. The Farmers to Families Food Box Program will procure fresh produce, dairy products, and meats like chicken and pork from domestic farms and box them to distribute to families in need through regional food banks and other food assistance organizations. The USDA program will procure an estimated $100 million per month in fresh fruits and vegetables, $100 million per month in a variety of dairy products, and $100 million per month in meat products nationwide. Many farms have reported having to dump milk or eggs because the processing plants or packaging facilities cannot take them. The restaurants, hotels, and schools that used to buy the

Sierra Club Awards Grants The Lancaster Group of the Sierra Club has awarded “green project” grants to eight Lancaster County organizations, each of which has shown a need for support of a venture that promotes sustainability, expands environmental awareness, and improves green infrastructure. With this latest round of awards, ranging up to $500 and announced on Earth Day, April 22, a total of 52 Lancaster County organizations have received green project grants over the past five years. Organizations receiving the grants, along with their projects, include Children’s Museum of Lancaster doing business as Hands-on House, purchasing plants for its Discovery Meadow and acquiring a potting shed with accessories; East Petersburg Sportsman’s Association, buying and delivering trees and creek-side plants and shrubs to replace dead, weak, or intrusive flora in its 11acre preserve; and ELANCO Source Water Collaborative, developing a native plant pollinator garden along a community park’s wooded nature trail. Recipients also include Historic Poole Forge Inc., expanding and improving its recently developed quarter-acre pollinator garden; Homefields Incorporated, purchasing native vegetation and a weed wrench for use in its current rain garden and the proposed extension of it; Hope United Methodist Church, Ephrata, installing an informational sign along the Ephrata-to-Warwick rail trail to direct and encourage trail users to visit its nearby native plant meadow and monarch butterfly pollinator garden; K-Prep Learning Center, developing an outdoor classroom and organic learning garden for use by students and their families; and Pathways - A Community Homeschool, establishing a pollinator field that includes native plants and wildflowers in Lancaster County’s 90-acre Brubaker Park. The proposals were evaluated on criteria such as environmental objective, unique aspect of the project, quality of submission, and how the Sierra Club - Lancaster Group might be involved. Awarded once a year, the grants are funded primarily with money generated through the Lancaster Group’s annual Polar Bear 5K Trail Run/Hike. Charitable, educational or business organizations in Lancaster County that demonstrate a commitment to the Sierra Club’s mission of exploring, enjoying, and protecting the planet are eligible to apply for a grant of $500 or less, according to program rules. The deadline to apply for the next cycle of awards is Friday, March 26, 2021, and recipients will be announced on Earth Day, Thursday, April 22, 2021. For complete details about the green project grant program, readers may visit http://lancastersierraclub.org/ grant-program/ or contact 717475-0586 or jimsmeenan@ gmail.com.
