Strawberry Sundae Talent Show Will Support Mission Trip BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Matt Kofroth, watershed specialist with the Lancaster County Conservation District, leads a program at a previous Watershed Expo.

Watershed Expo Will Offer Hands-On Learning ou can learn all about environmental issues that affect watersheds at the Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance’s 2022 Watershed Expo. The event will be held at the Manheim Farm Show Complex, 502 Adele Ave., on Tuesday, June 7, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. “ We’ll have a number of exhibitors, a rain barrel giveaway, live music, activities such as fish print T-shirt making and a water balloon launch, a fish shocking demonstration, a macroinvertebrates lesson at the creek by the county parks department, a food truck, and free ice cream and drinks compliments of Kreider Farms,” said Steve Gergely, president of Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance. Exhibitors will include Penn State Agriculture and Environmental

memorial to Jim Benedict, one of our longtime members who passed away.” As Gergely explained, the event is an opportunity to showcase the importance of the local watersheds and promote the mission of the Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance. “We’re a volunteer organization with a mission to promote good stewardship of the land within the Chiques Creek Watershed in order to protect and preserve the Chiques Creek for the present community and future generations,” he said. While the organization holds several outreach activities each year, the expo is its largest event and draws the most people, he noted. “It started off as a much smaller event that has grown over the years,” he remarked. “The Manheim Farm Show has been very generous in allowing us to host the event in recent years. With the Chiques Creek

right there, it’s a perfect setting.” Above all, he said, the event is meant to provide a fun and informative evening for attendees. “It’s a great opportunity to learn about things that local groups and organizations are doing to protect our waterways in a very hands-on environment,” he commented. “In addition to the educational opportunities, it’s a fun night out with live music, free ice cream, and activities for people of all ages.” Due to ongoing construction at Manheim Central High School, parking will be limited. Gergely suggested that people park in the Manheim Central Middle School parking lot, 261 White Oak Road, and take a short walk to the expo through a covered bridge. For more information on the event, search for “Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance” on Facebook or visit www.chiquescreekwatershed.com.

Admission to the event is by donation, and all proceeds will benefit a church mission trip. This year, a group will be going to Johnson County, Tennessee, to repair homes for people living in poverty. “We’ll do work to keep the house warmer, safer and drier,” Winters remarked. “We might repair roofs or install wheelchair ramps or paint the exterior.” The trip will take place from Sunday, July 17, through Saturday, July 23. In addition to Winters, participants will include Mark Heller, Chris Trovinger, Brynn Trovinger, Jim Stouch, Gareth Wright, Cody Grissinger and Angela Byus. The mission is conducted through Appalachia Service Project, which church members have been supporting for 40 years. This is the church’s 38th talent show to raise funds for the trip. Winters has been coordinating the trip for more than 25 years. Although adults attend the mission trip, it’s a youth-oriented experience, he said. “ We do activities in the evening as a group that are geared toward the youth,” he noted, adding that the trip is a good way for younger members of the church to understand the value of service. “Our mission trip is really helpful for people who are in need,” Winters commented. “Being able to go down and help is a blessing for us. They are so grateful and thankful for what we do. Sometimes, they’ll make a meal for us. They feed us and try to help us, too. We’re going down there thinking we’re helping them, but sometimes they end up helping us.”

• Helpful tips and ideas About 40 crafters are scheduled to take part in the annual AMBUCS show in Lititz Springs Park. BY ANN MEAD ASH

The AMBUCs annual Crafts in the Park fundraiser will be held for the 29th time this summer. “At one time, we had more than 100 vendors (taking part),” said AMBUCS member Frank Kenavan of past shows. The show was not held in 2020. In 2021, about 20 vendors participated. When the craft show is held in Lititz Springs Park, 18 N. Broad St., Lititz, on Saturday, June 11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Kenavan, who is overseeing the 2022 event, plans to have a total of about 40 vendors, mostly lined up between the fountain and the parking lot, but with some around the pond and along Broad Street. The show will be held rain or shine. Crafters who take part in the juried event will include makers of jewelry, photographers, and woodturners. “We’ll have some glasswork and metal art, which is always popular,” said Kenavan. “We have high-end items,” he added, noting that participat-

ing vendors must interact with what they are selling by making their own adjustments to the piece. The Lititz Springs Park snack bar will be open, and Kenavan encouraged visitors to enjoy all the town has to offer in the category of eateries. The AMBUCs, which also holds an annual craft beer fest fundraiser, is known for providing AmTrykes to children and adults to enhance mobility. “The AmTryke is a (mobility) tool,” said Kenavan. “We give them away (to those in need),” he said, adding that the cost of a Tryke can run as high as $1,500. “We say (to parents), ‘Bring it back when (the child) outgrows it, and we will give you another one.’ It’s all about inspiring mobility and independence.” Kenavan noted that the group has added several members in the past month, but welcomes more. Readers who would like more information about the club may visit www.lititzambucs.com. Individuals who have questions may email info@lititzambucs.com.

“People know (the IU13) from the lens of special education classrooms, and that is the foundation of who we are, but we have a 50-year history of doing really good work,” said Shannan Guthrie, program director with the Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13 (IU13). “ We take that dedication to other areas.” Among those areas are helping teachers with curriculum development and school districts to maximize funding. A sampling of the IU13’s activities will be highlighted during the group’s 50th anniversary celebration on Thursday, June 9, at the Lancaster offices, 1020 New Holland Ave., Lancaster, from 4 to 7 p.m. Organizers will have a plethora of activities ready for attendees to enjoy. Among those will be the Star Lab, a portable planetarium that can hold up to 20 people, which will be set up in the IU’s large conference room. A demonstration of Brailing services will give attendees an idea of the number of books and flyers the IU transfers into Braille format each year. “We will showcase our Refugee Center and our cultural navigator services,” said Guthrie, who explained that cultural navigators help families to meet with other families and navigate the system to find babysitters, shelter, education, and health care services. A demonstration of orientation and mobility services will be held, and STEM activities will show how lessons can be adapted for all levels of learning. “It will be in an expo style with examples (of what the IU13 does) all over the place,” said Guthrie, who added that Lisa Sanchez, a representative of Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation, will talk about summer camps. Other stops on the visit might include learning about organ tissue donation or meeting Luca, a facility dog that that travels to classrooms within the IU. “We will have free hot dogs, water, and cupcakes for families while supplies last,” said Guthrie, who noted that school resource officers will hand out icy pops, and that food trucks will be located in the courtyard. Organizers have also prepared a special page that high-

lights milestones of IU13 history at www.iu13.org/history. “IUs were founded in 1965,” said Guthrie. “The IUs opened their offices in 1971.” Guthrie emphasized that members of the public are welcome at the free event. “The idea is to celebrate (and) learn about the work we do,” she said, noting that she hopes attendees will leave with “an understanding of the breadth of IU13.” “There are so many amazing things happening that people don’t (know about),” she said. Readers who would like to attend are asked to register so that organizers can plan to have enough food and door prizes. To register, please email communications@iu13.org.
