SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

A Call To Serve And Protect BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Like many of their peers, the members of Mastersonville Volunteer Fire Company are struggling to recruit help. To remedy the problem, the fire company will hold an open house from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Monday, June 7, at the station, 2121 Meadow View Road, Manheim. “The goal of this open house is to engage the community,” said Lori

Shenk, assistant secretary. “It’s an open invitation to come say hi and see what we’re all about.” When the station moved to its current location, it hosted an open house in 2019, but the June 7 event will be less formal, Lori explained. “It’s going to be fun, informative and interactive in a safe way,” she stated. “We’re going to have handson activities under guidance and supervision.” There will be three stations set up for the open house. Providing A Safe Haven t the corner of Charlotte and Ferdinand streets in Manheim, a fresh start awaits. The site will be the location of The Home on Ferdinand, providing shelter for single mothers and their children. The home will be showcased in an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 5, and Sunday, June 6. The Home on Ferdinand is a project of the Manheim Community Life Group, said Bill Melone, community care pastor of Manheim Brethren in Christ Church and a board member of the group. “(Manheim) churches got together to see what they could do in Manheim to help the community,” Melone recalled, noting that the group soon determined the need for emergency housing services. “One of the churches had some money and made it available to the other

work was needed to prepare it for its new purpose. The entire interior was painted; floors were replaced throughout; walls were removed to make rooms bigger; and updated security features, including cameras and smoke detectors, were installed. The home features a common room, a dining room where the women can eat together, a full kitchen, a children’s play area and an adjoining building where live-in staff will reside. “A lot of volunteers helped to make this project happen, so the open house is an opportunity for them to see the finished project,” Nolt said, adding that the home is tentatively set to open in late summer. “It’s also a way for us to raise awareness for what we’re doing here. We have had financial contributions from churches, businesses and individuals, so the open house will give them a chance to see what has transpired here.”

What is the value of a red rose? For the members of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manheim, it’s priceless. On Dec. 4, 1772, Baron Henry William Stiegel and his wife, Elizabeth Holz Stiegel, conveyed property to fellow Lutherans to build a church in exchange for an annual rent payment of one red rose. We’ll have an in-house social worker as well.” Services will be individualized to meet the needs of each woman, providing the support for her to eventually live on her own, she said. A fire suppression station will show how engines and tankers provide water in rural locations and showcase other firefighting tactics. A rescue station will feature a car to demonstrate vehicle extraction methods, and a third station will share information about the company’s Quick Response Service (QRS), which is a medical response unit. “ We intend to make all three stations interactive by encouraging those attending to participate,” Lori noted. “Some of those interactive activities might be flowing water and some hands-on work with the rescue tools.” Mastersonville Volunteer Fire Company serves the Manheim area as well as parts of Mount Joy. Volunteers meet at 6:30 p.m. on Mondays for training, said Matt Shenk, committee member, and no experience is necessary to volunteer. “We know people are volunteers, so you can come when you have time,” he stated. There are opportunities

for going out into the field and fighting fires, but there are also volunteer opportunities for office work, noted Sara Duttera, secretary. “I’m an administrative volunteer. I help with fundraisers,” she explained. “I don’t want to run into burning buildings, but this is a way I can help. There is something for everyone here.” Capt. Eric Shields added that volunteering not only gives him a sense of pride, but also provides a way to support his neighbors. “It’s a way to give back to the community I live in,” he stated. “It’s a way to protect and serve.” Matt, who has been a firefighter for 40 years, said the station has become a second home, and he encourages anyone with an interest in giving back to join the station as a volunteer. “We are really a community within a community,” he remarked. “We all know each other, and we know each other’s families. We go through good calls and bad calls together. We take care of each other, and we’ve got each other’s backs.” For more information on Mastersonville Volunteer Fire Company or the open house, search for “Mastersonville Fire Co” on Facebook.

Pastor Daryl Heistand (left); Miranda Heistand (second from left), holding daughter Selah; and Arlene Heistand invite the community to a strawberry social at Rissers Mennonite Church. BY CATHY MOLITORIS

June is strawberry season in Lancaster County, and Rissers Mennonite Church will celebrate with a strawberry social. The event will be held at the church, 8360 Elizabethtown Road, Elizabethtown, beginning at 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 12. “We’ll have lawn games and kids’ activities like a pinata and bean bag toss, and we’ll have our playground open for kids to play on,” said Arlene Heistand, chair of the social committee. “We’ll serve a light supper, and then we’ll have a variety of strawberry desserts.”

YOUR LOCAL ATTORNEY sister, Stacy Stover Prince, will accept the red rose payment for the year 2021. The sisters were born and raised in Arlington County, Va. Carroll currently resides in Media, and Prince currently resides in Kensington, Md. Prince graduated from Purdue University and is currently a special education paraeducator with the Montgomery County Public Schools. Both women are ninth-generation descendants of Henry William and Elizabeth Holz Stiegel. Attorney J.D. Young Jr. from Young & Young Attorneys at Law in Manheim will serve as the legal representative for the presentation of the roses. “We have a rent book that they will sign, and we need to have an attorney present to witness this rental payment because it’s considered a legal transaction,” Keiffer noted. Church members have helped to make tracking down

Stiegel heirs easier over the years, she said, including a former pastor who completed extensive genealogy research in the 1950s and 1960s, as well as the late Millicent Cooper, who completed genealogy research in the 1990s. The recipients of the roses are presented the flowers in a towel embroidered locally with a red rose and the date and are also given a glass rose created by Stiegel Glassworks. Keiffer said the event is a fun way to commemorate the church’s history while enjoying time for socializing and fellowship. “Anybody is welcome to attend,” she stated. “It’s a really nice program for anyone who is interested in history and particularly the history of Manheim.” For more information about the Festival of the Red Rose, visit www.zionmanheim.com or contact the church office at717-665-5880.

originally called the Feast of Roses, became a tradition, and each year on the second Sunday of June, the Lutheran congregation pays the rent of one red rose to a selected Stiegel descendant. This year’s Festival of the Red Rose will be held on Sunday, June 13, beginning at 10:30 a.m. in the parking lot of the church, 2 S. Hazel St.

“It’s a nice way to celebrate the legacy of Baron Stiegel and his gift,” said Linda Keiffer, chair of the festival committee. Because the festival could not be held last year due to the pandemic, roses will be presented this year to two Stiegel heirs. Stephanie Stover Carroll will represent the Henry William Stiegel family for the year 2020. Her

Not everybody has somebody in their family who makes jam or who has experience with making it, so this will be an opportunity to see how it’s done.” The strawberry social offers a chance to enjoy tasty treats and socialize, said Arlene. “It’s a great opportunity for people who have been cooped up inside to get out and enjoy an evening outside,” she stated. Daryl agreed, adding, “It’s a chance to meet friends and have fun. You can play the games and enjoy the activities, or you can just sit around, eat and talk. It will be a very laid-back, easygoing event.” He said events like the strawberry social are important to the church members, who want to connect with their neighbors. “It’s a time for the community to come out and get to know us,” he explained. “We care about the people around us, and we want to encourage being friendly

Bringing Loved Ones Home With Project Lifesaver BY COURTNEY MENGEL

Before Project Lifesaver came to Lancaster County on Oct. 20, 2012, an elderly man wandered from his home during the winter. Much effort was put into finding him, but he was not located until a day

or two later. He had passed away 250 feet behind his home. “If he would have had a working wristband from Project Lifesaver, we more than likely would have found him,” stated Pilot Club of Lancaster member Cathy Cieslinski.

less than 30 minutes. Pilot Club has partnered with 18 municipalities to bring Project Lifesaver to Lancaster County. Lt. Jennifer Brubaker from East Hempfield Township Police Department was one of the first police officers to receive training. “The equipment took time to work with and feel comfortable using,” said Brubaker. “In a moment where lives are at stake, you don’t want to use equipment that you need to think much about operating. You want to get right to work and get moving with it.” Brubaker said she decided to receive training because she has two autistic goddaughters, so she saw value in the program. Project Lifesaver participants wear a personalized transmitter 24/7 on their wrist or ankle that emits a tracking signal on FM radio frequency. Police officers use a receiver to locate individuals through their transmitter. “Project Lifesaver is all about bringing your loved ones home, and we saw a need in our county. Implementing this program in our county was important to our club.” Project Lifesaver is a search-and-rescue program to locate at-risk individuals who wander. Its mission is to use state-of-the-art technology in assisting those who care for individuals with Alzheimer’s, dementia, autism, developmental disorders, Down syndrome, and other brain-related challenges across the United States. According to Project Lifesaver’s data, in over 3,400 searches, Project Lifesaver has achieved a 100% success rate on an average of

A Changing Of The Guard At Kraybill BY CATHY MOLITORIS

When MJ Smith retires from her position as principal of Kraybill Mennonite School at the end of this month, she’ll be leaving behind a job that she’s loved, and one that she said has been an honor to have. “It has been really great to have been gifted with the privilege of serving here,” she said. “This school is a community that really supports the students and the teachers. It is a fantastic place. It’s not heaven, but it’s close.” Smith noted that her retirement is bittersweet. “I really enjoy seeing the children come to school in the morning, greeting them when they

come in the door,” she stated. “I love seeing them and their brothers and sisters and their families.” She has also enjoyed having the opportunity to make a difference in students’ lives. “I like helping children to solve their problems,” she remarked. “I like to help them discover how they can find a solution and have success.” Still, she acknowledged that one thing she won’t miss has been the stress of the past year, with the added pressure of the pandemic. “I am also really looking forward to not having to get up at 5:30 in the morning and have a full agenda all day. I have stacks of books to read, projects around

Janice Greenleaf (left) will take over as principal at Kraybill Mennonite School, replacing MJ Smith.

the house,” she said, noting that she is also eager to spend even more time with her grandchildren, who attend Donegal schools. Smith said her departure is made a little easier by knowing she’s leaving the school to a very capable educator. Janice Greenleaf will be taking the reins as the new principal. “I know Janice very well, and I feel extremely confident to have her come on,” Smith stated. Greenleaf, who has spent the past 12 years teaching at Lancaster Mennonite Middle School, is a former Kraybill parent and said that background makes her uniquely suited for her new job. “I have experienced this school both as a parent and as a substitute teacher,” explained Greenleaf, whose three children attended Kraybill. “There are not many places like Kraybill, with its support for everyone and the collaborative community.” She noted that she is most looking forward to helping the school continue to experience the positive growth that has happened recently, including the addition of a school garden. “I’ve had some experience with experiential

learning, and I want to continue that at Kraybill,” she stated. “I believe in learning through different avenues beyond the four walls of the classroom.” Although Greenleaf said she’s excited about her position, she admits that Smith leaves big shoes to fill. “The challenge for me is to make connections and get to know the people here,” she remarked. “MJ has a wealth of knowledge as far as knowing the students and their families and the outside community. That will be one of my main goals, to build that knowledge base.” Smith said although she’s retiring, she’s not going away, and she will be around to support Greenleaf and the school as needed. Still, she said, she doubts her replacement will require much help, adding, “I know the school is in very, very good hands.”

Baron Volleyball Competes in District Tourney BY ERIC G. STARK

The Manheim Central volleyball team cruised into the District Class 2A semifinals after beating York Catholic 3-0 last Monday night in the quarterfinals in Manheim. Game scores were 25-23, 25-18 and 25-22. The victory qualified Manheim for the state playoffs. Craig Dietrich’s message to his team: Keep on swinging and good things will happen. “When we get going and we’re aggressive, we are pretty tough stop,” said Dietrich, the Barons’ coach. “When we start laying off the gas and stop being aggressive, we just start becoming complacent a bit. That’s when we start making mistakes, when we lay off. We try to tell the guys to just keep being aggressive and keep swinging, man. Just keep swinging and good things will happen, eventually.” Manheim (12-4) had a 15-9 lead in the first game, but the Fighting Irish (11-5) put together an 8-1 run to take 17-16 lead. York Catholic led 22-20 before the Barons battled back. The Barons recovered and got the momentum back in their favor. “I think a lot of that is our senior leadership,” Dietrich said. “Blake (Wagner) and Jeremiah (Zimmerman) they know that the game, ultimately, lies in their hands to get us to prevail and get us over the hump in those moments where we give up one or two (points). We really rely on them to get us through those tough times, and they’ve done it plenty of times this year.” Game Two had nine ties, as York Catholic, in its first varsity season, put up a great fight and contested every point. This game had some big kills by the Barons, as freshman Logan Groff (five kills) sent a spike that hit the back line judge to even the score at 5-5. Wagner soared high for a spike on the left side to put Manheim ahead 19-15. During the final points, Jeremiah Zimmerman (five aces, three kills, two blocks, 30 assists) set up Wagner twice for spikes, including the final blow to capture the game. With the win, Central traveled to Lower Dauphin, the No. 1 seed, last Wednesday for the semifinals and lost 3-1 to the Falcons. Manheim came out on fire, taking the first game, 26-24, and it looked like the Barons were prime for an upset, as they attempted to defend their district crown from 2019. But Lower Dauphin (17-2) took the next three games, 25-18, 2518 and 25-20.

Central put up a great fight. Zimmerman had 40 assists and Wagner registered 28 kills. TRACK Several Barons took home medals from the District Three meet on May 22 at Shippensburg University. Sophomore Maddie Knier earned silver medals in the javelin (129-0) and high jump (55) and finished eighth in the long jump (16-9). Junior Malea Stoner was fourth in the 300 hurdles (46.49) and sixth 100 hurdles (16.10). Sophomore Abigail Reed placed seventh in both the 100 (16.27) and 300 hurdles (47.10). Knier and Stoner both qualified for the state competition. The girls team finished with 29 points, good for eighth overall in the team standings. On the boys’ side, senior Kade Kegarise earned seventh place in the javelin (166-11). BASEBALL With its 2-0 victory over Lampeter-Strasburg at Ephrata’s War Memorial Field on May 20, Manheim Central baseball won its first Lancaster-Lebanon League title since 2000. Great pitching and timely hitting were factors in the championship win and in the three league playoff victories. Junior right-hander Connor Rohrer pitched like an ace, going six shutout innings, yielding just two hits. Wyatt Becker threw a perfect seventh inning, throwing, at one point, seven straight strikes. “Connor pitched the best I’ve seen him this season,” Barons’ skipper Jason Thompson said. “He battled some control problems but was able to get the big outs when we needed them. Defensively, we made some great plays. Wyatt has been so good relieving for us. It’s nice to

have that at the back end of the bullpen.” Central took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a walk, an error on a potential double-play ball and Riley McGallicher’s two out RBI single. Colton Book hit a solo home run to left center to give the Barons some breathing room. The win was also the fifth time ever that Manheim won 20 games in a season. The last three wins

came against Solanco, Manheim Township (previously undefeated) and L-S, which gave the Barons their only loss on the season. “The effort and focus of the team impressed me the most,” Thompson said. “We had to beat three really good teams to win the league title. We overcame adversity.” The Barons hosted Mechanicsburg last Tuesday and held on for a 4-3 win in the first round of the District Three Class 5A tournament. Manheim got win no. 21 on the season, as the Barons, the No. 1

seed in Class 5A, jumped out to an early 4-0 lead against the 16thseeded Wildcats to advance to the quarterfinals against Muhlenberg. Central scored two runs in the first and second innings. Two walks and RBI singles by Brady Harbach and Malakai Zilinski led to the first inning runs and Book’s RBI single highlighted the second inning. Zilinski went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs and Book knocked in the other two runs. Book’s offense helped him on

the mound, as he got the win, pitching six strong innings and striking out seven, while giving up two earned runs. Becker came in the game for the seventh and earned the save. “We battled and came out with the win when it wasn’t one of our best days at the plate,” Thompson said. (17-0) and lost 15-0 in the first round of the District Three Class 5A tournament. Manheim’s fantastic junior shortstop Emma Damon had the only hit. For the season, Damon’s .548 batting average was second on the team to Gabby Wettig who had a .623 average. Brianna Mylin finished with a .403 average and Mickey Lauver hit .348. Damon and Maddie Moyer had 29 and 21 RBIs, respectively. Wettig and Damon had 38 and 34 total hits, respectively. Damon also had two home runs. Wettig led the team in on base percentage at .667. Wettig and Mylin each had four triples this season. This wraps up the season for the Barons, who finished with an 11-10 record. When they were clicking their offense could score a lot of runs, as they often jumped out to early leads in games. As a junior pitcher, Wettig had a strong season and will only get better in the circle. “I feel it was a great year, especially coming off of last year.” Barons’ coach John VanBlargan said. “This was the pitcher’s (Wettig) first year and she did a great job. We will have seven returning starters so we are looking forward to great things next year. It was a great learning and building year for the girls.”
