LCBC To Host 20th Annual Motorsports Show Festival Of The Red Rose To Honor Heritage
MUSICAL PROGRAM
The 20th annual Motorsports Show at LCBC’s Manheim campus is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 8. By Chelsea Peifer
LCBC (Lives Changed By Christ) Church will host the 20th annual Motorsports Show at its Manheim campus, located at 2392 Mount Joy Road, Manheim,
on Saturday, June 8, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This year’s Motorsports Show will feature more than 1,000 antique, classic, model, and muscle cars; tuners; street rods; and motorcycles. The event is free for entrants and visitors. See Motorsports Show pg 2
Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2 S. Hazel St., Manheim, invites the community to join in celebrating the 127th Festival of the Red Rose on Sunday, June 9, at the church. A choir will present a medley of songs, titled “How Can I Keep From Singing,” beginning at 1:30 p.m., and the Rose Festival Service will start at 2 p.m. An ice cream social will be held for all attendees after the service. The community tradition dates back to Dec. 4, 1772, when Henry William Stiegel and his wife, Elizabeth Holz Stiegel, conveyed a plot of ground on the corner of Wolf and East High streets to their fellow Lutherans on which to build a church in exchange for a unique continual payment. The property is listed as lot number 220 on Stiegel’s original map, and a note in Stiegel’s own hand says, “Church Lott, no price.” The deed in part reads, “for and in consideration of the sum of five shillings yielding and paying unto the said Henry William Stiegel, his
Stiegel family representative Owen Demmerly will receive the Rent of One Red Rose at this year’s Festival of the Red Rose on June 9. heirs, or assigns at the said town of Manheim in the month of June yearly forever hereafter the Rent of One Red Rose if the same shall be lawfully demanded.” See Red Rose pg 6

decided to select a feature vehicle for the first time: the iconic Ford Mustang, now in its 55th year of continuous production. An area designated as the Mustang Corral will feature all six generations of Mustangs, as well as special models, Shelbys, Cobras, and other limited editions. “In upcoming years we’ll probably feature other cars, added Hershey. Special guest John M. Clor of Ford Performance, who has authored several books on the Mustang, will present on the history of the Ford Mustang at 10 a.m. in the LCBC auditorium. Afterward, Clor will be in the Mustang Corral to autograph free posters and distribute other free Ford merchandise. Another new aspect of this year’s show will be free oval track remote-control racing for both children and adults. “We’ll have up to eight cars at a time racing one another, Hershey said. Other children’s activities will include face painting and inflatables. Free coffee and doughnuts will be available in the morning, and free candy, snow cones, and ice cream will be offered starting at 12:30 p.m. Additional food will be available to purchase from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., including barbecue sandwiches, french fries, burgers, hot dogs, salads, soft pretzels, beverages, and more. According to Hershey, more than 5,000 people attended last year’s Motorsports Show, and it takes a total of 150 to 200 volunteers to run the event. “It’s just exciting with it being the 20th year to know where it came from. Back when it started, it was just a small get-together with some cars and some grills, Hershey said. “There has been a ton of impact as well, with people plugging into LCBC and other churches after coming to the show, and it’s been really cool to hear those stories over the years. LCBC Church is a contemporary, seeker-sensitive church and is currently ranked as the 18th largest church in the United States by Outreach Magazine with a weekly attendance of 17,000. In addition to its Manheim campus, LCBC has locations in Harrisburg, downtown Lancaster, York, Ephrata, Harleysville, Bloomsburg, Leesport, Waynesboro, Hanover, Hazleton, Coal Township, Mechanicsburg, and Lebanon. Service times and additional details are available at http://LCBCchurch.com.

Karissa mentioned Renee Kowalchik as another teacher who had a positive impact on her. “She made me more confident in myself,” she said. Karissa noted that her advice to incoming freshmen would be to get involved in as much as they can at school. “I didn’t do a lot in ninth grade, and I regret that,” she recalled. “I would tell underclassmen to make the most of their experience here,” agreed Curtis. “You only get four years here, and once it’s over, that’s it.”
either Curtis or Karissa had set their sights on. “I was just motivated to get good grades for college,” said Karissa. Both humbly attributed their academic success to hard work and staying focused. The guidance and instruction from MCHS faculty also played a pivotal part in their journey. Both Curtis and Karissa said that freshman English teacher Amy Grey still sticks out as someone who challenged the students greatly. “She’s a difficult grader but definitely helped me with improving my writing,” said Curtis. Dream BIG! from pg 1 By Ann Mead Ash
After Cristin Germaine held the third Dare to Dream Single Moms’ Day Out in 2018, she felt a change was in order. “By the end of 2018, I was talking with trusted friends about where to go with Dare to Dream,” recalled Germaine, who felt the Lord
pushing her to expand the audience for the next event. “This will be a brand-new venture,” said Germaine of the free re-envisioned event that will Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The day will be called “Dream BIG!: Ignite Your Passion,” and it will be open to
men and teenagers age 15 and up in addition to women. The event will include praise and worship led by Matt and Kim Goss, speakers, and a number of workshops. “This is for anyone, (whether) married or single,” said Germaine, who explained that the “BIG” in Dream BIG! stands for “Bringing in God.” “When you bring God into your dreams, you ignite your passion,” she explained. “It’s for anyone who has had a dream and

let go.” As a single mom, Germaine noted that it was hard for her to dream again, but through founding the Dare to Dream events, she took that step. An important part of Dream BIG! will be the workshops, which Germaine noted are specifically geared toward helping people move forward. “One couple (will hold a) workshop on embracing brokenness,” noted Germaine. “(That’s about breaking) free (from) our past to dream again.” The 2019 workshops will include “The Path That Brings Me Back to You - Visioning With God,” presented by Steve and Colleen Adams; “Become Aware of Your Presence,” presented by Dan Armstrong; “Wake Up, Get Up, and Go!” presented by Julia Banks; “Created for Greatness,” presented by the Dash Girls; “Rewind. Remind. Redefine. Peeking at Your Past to Purposefully Be Present for Your Future,” presented by Tabitha
Deller; and “Finding Your Passion Through a Side Hustle,” presented by Jonathan and Denise Ebersole. In addition, a vendor fair featuring up to a dozen vendors will be held during the event. As an example of what can happen when one dares to dream, Germaine shared some of the events that have occurred in her life in the last year. “I was getting my story out and sharing about Dare to Dream,” said Germaine. “God put it in my heart to do a song.” A friend directed her to Eric Copeland, who is president of a music label, and together they wrote a song called “Dream BIG!” that is based on Germaine’s life story. In September 2018, Germaine traveled to Nashville to record the vocals. Grammy winner Jonathan Crone oversaw the recording of the song, which Germaine co-produced with Copeland. A launch party for the song was held in May. “God is doing amazing things,”
said Germaine. “I always wanted to sing. I wanted to go to Nashville.” Realizing one of her dreams has inspired Germaine to want to share with others. “Dreaming reminds us of who we are in Christ,” said Germaine. “I want to encourage (attendees) to dream again and dream big!” There is no charge to attend Dream BIG! However, registration is necessary. Individuals wishing to attend may search for “Dream BIG! Ignite Your Passion” at www.eventbrite.com to register by Saturday, June 8. Child care and lunch will not be provided.

financial reverses, spent a brief incarceration in debtor’s prison, and, upon his release, never returned to the town of Manheim. The payment of the red rose was virtually forgotten for more than 100 years. In 1892, Dr. J.H. Sieling, the town physician and a trustee of the Lutheran congregation heard numerous stories
about the illustrious “Baron” Stiegel, a glassmaker and founder of the town. Sieling learned of the legend that a red rose was plucked from a bush growing on the church grounds and presented to Stiegel when he passed by the Lutheran church. Sieling, thinking there might be more to the story, went through the church archives and discovered the original deed with its distinct clause. He then proposed to his fellow churchmen that an all-day celebration be held in conjunction with the annual rose payment, if a descendant of Stiegel could be located. On June 4, 1892, John Calvin Stiegel of Harrisonburg, Va., came to Manheim to receive the red rose from the Lutheran congregation. John Calvin Stiegel was the great-great grandson of Henry William and Elizabeth Holz Stiegel through their son, Jacob. The celebration and rose payment, originally called the Feast of Roses became a tradition, and each year on the second Sunday of June, the Lutheran congregation pays the Rent of One Red Rose to a selected Stiegel descendant. Representing the Henry William Stiegel family this year and receiving the Rent of One Red Rose is Owen Demmerly of Baltimore. Demmerly is a 10th-generation descendent of Stiegel and Stiegel’s first wife, Elizabeth Huber Stiegel. He was born and raised in Medford, N.J., and attended Goucher College in Towson, Md. He is employed at Greenspring Advisors in Towson as a financial associate. The guest speaker at this year’s event will be Robert Smith Walker, a former member of the United States House of Representatives. Walker received a Bachelor of Science in education from Millersville University, a Master of Arts in political science from the University of Delaware, and an Honorary Doctor of Laws from Franklin & Marshall College. Walker’s message will focus on the life and history of the Muhlenberg family. Serving as Zion’s legal representative will be attorney Susan Young Nicholas from the law firm of Young & Young in Manheim. Nicholas is a graduate of Manheim Central High School, Dickinson College, and Temple University School of Law. She is a member of the Pennsylvania and Lancaster Bar Associations and attends First United Methodist Church in Lancaster. Readers who would like to know more about the Festival of the Red Rose may visit www.zionmanheim.com or contact the church office at 717-665-5880.
Whether the red rose was actually ever paid to Stiegel is in doubt, although a persistent tradition says that twice the token payment was made to him in 1773 and 1774. Unfortunately, Stiegel suffered disastrous

Barons Earn First District Title in Volleyball By Eric G. Stark
It took about 12 hours to sink in. Only after Craig Dietrich picked up the local newspaper the next morning and read the headline did it really seem real. “Okay, we did win districts,” the Manheim Central volleyball coach said. After winning seven LancasterLebanon League Section Two titles, collecting three District Three silver medals and one runner-up finish at states in their 13-year existence, the Baron boys’ volleyball team finally earned their first Class 2A district title on Friday, May 24 at Central York High School. The Barons did this with an impressive 3-0 victory over York Suburban, a team that beat Manheim earlier this season in a five-game match that resulted in a 15-13 loss in the fifth and deciding game. Manheim learned from the loss and made it look easy against York Suburban, winning 25-18, 25-21 and 25-22. “It wasn’t like that,” Dietrich said about the scores making it look easy. “To be honest, we had a good game
plan in place. We had film and saw their rotations. But a game plan is only half the battle. You have to execute and we did in all phases.” The Barons, who lost in the district final a year earlier to Northeastern York, were making their third straight appearance in the finals. Manheim Central is playing with a lot of confidence. Winning the district title was gratifying, especially because they were not expected to do it, Dietrich said. Those that make predictions didn’t give the Barons a chance, he said. The expectations were different this season, compared to last year when the Barons were ranked No.1 and picked to compete for league, district and state titles. They finished as runner-up for all three of these championships. Fast forward a year, and the bullseye was not on the Barons any more. “It was a different set of feelings,” Dietrich said. “Last year there were expectations and we came through, for the most part; there’s nothing to be ashamed about with how we fin-
ished. But there was a lot of pressure on us. This year there was not as much pressure because no one expected it.” What was expected this season was outstanding play from All-State hitters Mason Nissley and Brandyn Musser. Fellow senior Ben Wolford is coming along nicely and complements Nissley and Musser. “Guys can’t forget about Ben because he can hurt you,” Dietrich said. Musser had 13 kills and 11 digs. Nissley had 25 kills and 10 digs. That’s 38 kills between these two power hitters on the front line. Setter Jeremiah Zimmerman, a sophomore, dished out 42 assists and put up two blocks. Manheim, which is ranked No. 1 in the PAVBCA state rankings in Class 2A, rode the momentum of their district championship into the first round of the state playoffs against Archbishop Wood on Tuesday, May 28. To say the Barons cruised to a 3-0 victory - in a match that lasted only 54 minutes - would be an understatement. The game scores were 25-14, 25-7 and 25-8.
Manheim actually did start slow out of the gate and trailed 8-6 in game one before outscoring Archbishop Wood 19-2. The Barons jumped out to a 12-0 lead in game two and held an 18-2 lead in game three. This match was one-sided. “They were very overmatched with us and that’s indicative of the scores,” Dietrich said. “Once they (Archbishop Wood) realized who we were and what we were capable of, it was pretty much over. It was just a matter of us opposing our will.” Nissley collected 17 kills and five aces. Junior Quintin Rohrer added a block and sophomore Blake Wagner notched four digs. Zimmerman had 30 assists. In the state quarterfinal Saturday, June 1, Manheim defeated Palumbo, the District 12 runner-up. Central won 3-0 on game scores of 25-19, 25-8 and 25-16. The Barons (18-2) advanced to the state semifinals and their third meeting against York Suburban on Tuesday, June 4, which occurred past the Merchandiser’s deadline. The teams split the previous meetings. The winner advances to the Saturday,
June 8 championship at Penn State’s Pegula Ice Arena. Nissley was all over the stat sheet against Palumbo. His kill put the Barons up 20-11 in the first set and his block secured the first game victory. Nissley had three consecutive aces in game three to give Manheim a 17-10 lead. He finished with 23 kills and two blocks. Wagner was a key on defense with three digs. Zimmerman added 31 assists. Musser had an ace to notch the game two win, capping a 12-1 scoring run by the Barons. Junior Logan Whitehouse pounded a kill to put Manheim up 19-10 in the third game. Manheim played the way its coach wanted to see. “We need to come out and play our brand of volleyball,” Dietrich said prior to Saturday. “The guys are very focused, confident and comfortable.” Track Will Rivers completed a remarkable senior season with a fourth place finish in the triple jump at the state track and field meet at Shippensburg University’s Seth Grove Stadium on Friday, March 24.
He also earned All-State Honorable mention honors. Rivers, who had an outstanding season on the football field, had a memorable Memorial Day weekend to put a cherry on top of a great spring in track and field. He leaped 46-7 for fourth place at states, but he also set new standards for the Barons in three events - triple and long jumps and 200 meter dash and set the bar high for league, district and state appearances by Manheim athletes. “It challenges the perspective of what success is,” Manheim Central coach Ryan Kennedy said, “and it changes expectations. Now we expect to take kids to the state meet.” Rivers wasn’t the only Baron to go to states. Senior Zach Reed also competed in the state’s highest competition. He did not make the finals in the 300 hurdles, but he competed well, Kennedy said. Reed ran a personal best time in the district meet and it is a challenge to get back up emotionally and physically in only a week, his coach said. “It is so difficult after that great

who says Zach was a good mentor. “I think Nate is very aware of every time Zach runs,” Kennedy said, “and he takes notes of what Zach does. He watches how Zach trains. It is a great advantage for Nate.” Back to Rivers and his medal-winning performance. Kennedy said Rivers didn’t finish in the top one percent of all triple jumpers in the state by accident. This particular outcome didn’t happen overnight; it built over time. It started during his sophomore season and picked up steam this year during the Twin Valley Invitational when Rivers secured his personal best jump of 48-3, which was also a school record. This was two-feet better than
his pervious personal record. This was his breakthrough. “Jumping 48 feet put him in an elite level for jumpers,” Kennedy said. “Any breakthrough, in any event, comes from consistent hard work. Will is a special athlete who showed a commitment to get better.” BASEBALL The Barons baseball team completed its 2019 season with a 3-1 loss Friday, May 24 against Gettysburg in District Three quarterfinals. Manheim finished the season with an impressive 20-4 record. It is only the fourth time in school history the Barons reached the 20-win mark. “It was a pretty remarkable season for our guys,” said Barons’ coach Jason
Thompson, who will have five of his 12 varsity letter winners back next season. “We do lose seven seniors and the biggest thing we will miss is that they were great leaders, teammates and had a high baseball IQ. As far as the future,it looks great. The JV’s went 35-2 in the last two years and there is talent on paper, but of course, that’s on paper.” Central had just three hits against two really good pitchers for Gettysburg. The Barons lone run came in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Colton Book. Key performers: Book was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Drew Mummau was 1-for-3 and Garrett Bruckhart was 1-for-2. Book pitched well for the Barons, allowing only six hits and three earned runs while striking out three.

district performance to get back up to that level again and it happens to be states,” Kennedy said. With athletes like Reed and Rivers, Kennedy believes his boys’ team will ride a lot of momentum into next season. He knows both seniors were closely watched by the underclassmen. Reed, in particular, had a set of eyes on him. His younger brother, Nate, a sophomore, looks up to Zach, said Kennedy,
