A lot has been said lately about the importance of physical health as it pertains to the novel coronavirus. However, as people stay confined to their homes or report to jobs where they might be putting themselves at risk of illness, mental health must not be forgotten. “It is just as important to take
protective action and precautions for your mental health as you would for your physical health. One cannot exist without the other,” advised Kim McDevitt, executive director of Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC). “COVID-19 has changed the way we think about things. Where we had safety, we have insecurities. We are also conflicted with feeling anxious but also grateful for some of the gifts that

MHALC from pg 1 we have received as a result of this crisis. The forced series of events and feelings associated with them can throw our equilibrium off. MHALC’s mission is to promote optimal mental health through advocacy, education, and support, so the organization has stepped up its efforts
to help individuals cope with these trying times. “The uncertainty is what’s unsettling, McDevitt said. “It’s important to remember, in spite of this all, you still have control over your day-to-day. Both solitude and unrelenting closeness can be challenges. For people who seek connection,
McDevitt recommended video chats with friends and family or calling someone they might not have talked to in a while. She noted that it is valuable to ask three simple questions of someone who might be struggling with loneliness: Do you feel left out? Do you lack companionship? Do you feel isolated? The

answers to these questions can help lonely people acknowledge their isolation and begin to open contact with others in a supportive social network. “Research shows that just reaching out and being there for someone can truly save a life, said MHALC child/family advocate Gretchen Gaudioso. Hugs and even handshakes have been sacrificed for social distancing, and the lack of physical contact can have a real impact. McDevitt recommended snuggling with pets or meditating to achieve calmness when needing touch. Conversely, designating a getaway spot in a house or apartment and then informing cohabitants of a need for space before being overwhelmed may help with too much closeness, McDevitt said. Establishing a routine for all household members ensures that there is order to each day, with time for short breaks built in. It is normal to feel anxiety, but when it persists or there is little to no relief during the day, it can be a good thing to take the mental health screening at www.mhalancaster.org/screening-tools/. If any of the symptoms are persistent or impede daily function, professionally trained MHALC staff members can provide a listening ear or guidance toward more intensive support, McDevitt said. MHALC has extended its hours to meet the increased need for 1-to-1 phone support, and it has created virtual
support groups. “We have seen a spike on all of our online mental health screenings, most notably more than 50% increase on our anxiety and depression screenings, McDevitt reported. More than half of the people who have taken the screenings have never received treatment. “This could be the first time they have experienced any symptoms or concern for their mental health, or their mental health challenges have increased to the point where they may need support. Everyone is experiencing or is being affected by someone who is experiencing anxiety right now, McDevitt said. Mental health treatment can be expensive, and McDevitt expressed concern for people who have lost their jobs and medical insurance and are unable to pay out of pocket for mental health supports. She noted that MHALC is currently working on See MHALC pg 5

an interesting experience at MCHS because four years ago I began losing some of my vision,” explained Nicolas. “I wanted to share parts of my story with my classmates.” Just as he was beginning his high school career, Nicolas was diagnosed with Leber’s hereditary optic neuropathy. Both Nicolas’ mother and brother have the condition. In his speech, Nicolas shared how his experience had made him more resilient. “We cannot forget everything that happened over the years; even the bad memories shape us into who we are. ... Life will not go the way you planned. Rebuilding will take time. The sooner we all admit that, the better.” In the fall, Nicolas will attend the Penn State Harrisburg campus, where he plans to study mechanical engineering. He noted that his time at MCHS was marked by challenges, but also by the opportunity to find the strategies to meet them. “(At MCHS) I have had the support I needed in order to be successful,” said Nicolas, who named several teachers he was grateful for in his speech, especially Gregory Gerhart, itinerant teacher for the visually impaired. Dr. Peter Aiken, superintendent of Manheim Central Schools, congratulated the class, and the message to the class was given by Joshua Enck, who graduated from MCHS in 1994. Members of the class were inducted into the Alumni Association by Dennis Enck of the MCHS Class of 1970. The ceremony also featured musical selections sung by members of the Class of 2020. “In Case You Don’t Live Forever” by Ben Platt was sung by Francesca McClure, and “No One Is Alone” by Stephen Sondheim was sung by Annelise Deppen and Nina Bonanno.

kindness from teachers, students, and staff.” Luke Weaver, son of James and Marjorie Weaver of Manheim, was named salutatorian. He received an award from the Baron Insurance Group, the Manheim Central Alumni Association, and the Rudisill family, among others. In his speech, he encouraged his classmates to explore their own stories with confidence, saying, “Life is not a movie or a book. It is a thousand different stories woven together, all of which seem confusing and convoluted at various times, but thankfully we are the main characters in our own stories. In this next phase, after high school, I challenge each of us to recognize this complexity, enjoy the journey, and remember that we are not alone.” In the fall, Luke will attend Lehigh University in Bethlehem, where he will study machine learning with a concentration in hardware integration. His memories of MCHS are of the students and staff he got to know. “Everyone is so accepting, and they care,” Luke said. Nicolas Spohn, son of Kyle Spohn of Manheim and Livia Spohn of Manheim, volunteered to speak when an email invitation went out to members of the MCHS Class of 2020. “I have had

MERCHANDISER - Manheim Central Edition -
Lancaster-based company Emerald Asset Management PA has provided personal protective equipment (PPE) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Joseph E. Besecker, president and CEO of Emerald, started the Emerald Foundation in 2010. The “E,” as the foundation is commonly known, purchased the former Jewish Community Center in Manheim Township in 2017, nearly 25,000 square feet of space on approximately nine acres. Filling it with nonprofit partners, the E was eager to support the community and soon added a separate focus on electronic gaming, or esports, as a way to help students acquire and refine in-demand technical skills. In recent years, Besecker has developed a national network to enhance the foundation’s impact in the esports world. Besecker heard about COVID19 in early January and soon learned that not enough PPE was available locally. In early March, the E launched its Call to Arms for Operation Emerald, a commitment to furnish free PPE to the frontline medical and first responder community. In addition, it began planning, promoting, and hosting esports tournaments for students stuck at home. Besecker transitioned the E facility - by this time closed in accordance with the orders of Gov. Tom Wolf - into a 24-hour PPE acquisition and distribution center. To fill the void, Besecker ramped up quickly, calling for help from his foundation leadership team, including his wife, Martha Besecker, and his sisterin-law Susie Kettler-Ziegler, as well as local businessman Robert Zuckerman and Dr. Christian R. Macedonia, CEO of a local life sciences company. This new team was nicknamed
the Wolverines, a nod to the movie “Red Dawn.” With some early success procuring PPE, the Wolverines team was added as a partner to the Southern Central Regional Task Force of the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency. Besecker, with assistance from associates, seeded the E’s PPE acquisition initiative with his own money and saw community dollars flow in after that. With the funding, the E has supplied approximately 60,000 pieces of PPE for free, including face masks, gowns and gloves, to frontline medical workers, firefighters, police officers, funeral home employees, bus drivers, nursing home staff, and home health workers throughout Lancaster County and beyond. On April 8, the beginning of Passover, Besecker connected with a Great Neck, N.Y., based PPE brokerage firm, whose employees are Orthodox Jews. They had available supply, so Besecker wired them the money on the spot, but knew he could not pick up the PPE before sundown, when the supplier’s staff would no longer be able to work. Besecker turned to his Wall Street business associates, emailing people he knew who lived on Long Island. Within minutes, Jerry S. Arzú, of brokerage Telsey Advisory Group, was en route from his nearby home to pick up the 14 boxes before sundown and then drove to meet Besecker along the New Jersey Turnpike to save Besecker the trip across New York City. Besecker has also received donated, handmade cotton face masks daily from local Amish and Mennonite communities, which he distributes along with the medical-grade equipment he purchases.

12 - MERCHANDISER - Manheim Central Edition - June 10, 2020
Red Accordion Studios To Livestream Musical
R059389
Red Accordion Studios will present an online musical, adapted to be rehearsed and performed entirely remotely. “The Big One-Oh! Online Edition,” with music by Doug Besterman, lyrics by Dean Pitchford, and libretto by Timothy Allen McDonald, will have six performances. The show will be livestreamed at 7 p.m. on Fridays, June 12 and 19, and at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, June 13 and 20. The show was adapted from a full-length theater for young audiences show, which was adapted from a children’s book of the same name. In the musical, a friendless boy decides to throw a 10th birthday party for himself, featuring a “House of Horrors” theme. This 20-minute Zoomsical features a cast of 20 actors, ranging from age 8 to adults. Many of the actors are local children from Hempfield, Penn Manor, and various other school districts, including some in Lebanon and York. However, actress Reagan McCartney, who plays Swampy, joins from Arkansas, and college student Seth Jerabek, who plays Zombie King, is currently in Ohio. The cast uses Zoom to rehearse. Singing and dancing together is a challenge, so the big song and dance numbers will be prerecorded. The acting will be done together over a Zoom meeting. Because of the technical challenges, the performance will be prerecorded so the livestream at showtime can go off without a hitch. Though the musical is only 20 minutes long, the full presentation will be a bit longer as it will include a curtain speech by Red Accordion owner and show director Jen Felty as well as some cast interviews. In addition to Reagan and Seth, the cast includes Jake Jarkowsky as Charley, Bailey Hart Felty as Jennifer, Malloree Marshall as Alien, Candace Mbugua as Donna, Wilder Long as Cougar, Nate Garland as Dad, Cassidy Wray Martin as Mom, Noah David Felty as Vince Champagne, Will Noll as Scottie, Kayleigh Jarkowsky as Mrs. Cleveland, Silas Dietrich as Darryl, Ava Munn as Dina, Ava Dietrich as Dana, and Sophia Dietrich as Lorena, as well as Victoria Munn, Emma Antonacci, Anneke Muskens, and Cameryn Diebler in the ensemble. To purchase tickets, readers may visit www.RedAccordion.com and click on Tickets. After purchasing tickets, supporters will receive a link to the livestream. Attendees must have internet access, but they may view the musical on any device. Red Accordion Studios is a performing arts and theater company based in Lancaster and Lititz that presents plays and musicals and provides theater arts education opportunities.
