FoodStock Music Festival Moves To Lancaster By Dayna M. Reidenouer

The sixth annual FoodStock Music Festival, a fundraiser to fight hunger, will be held at Buchanan Park, 901 Buchanan Ave., Lancaster, on Saturday, June 22, from noon to 7 p.m. During the event, attendees may enter to win prizes, shop at a craft show, listen to a variety of music, and purchase food and beverages. Children age 12 and under will be able to enter for free when accompanied by adults who have purchased tickets. The event has been moved to Lancaster from Manheim so that organizers can take full control of the event - the previous venue controlled the layout and concessions - and to ensure that it is family-inclusive and affordable. “Our goal is to maximize attendance

and, therefore, maximize the amount of money we can raise for hunger-fighting organizations in our community,” explained Jack Fliszar, FoodStock promotion and marketing coordinator. In the past five years, FoodStock has raised approximately $30,000. Fliszar noted that the event was created by Tom Hayden, who worked for the United States Postal Service and saw firsthand the success of the National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Hayden wanted to do more, so he created FoodStock Music Festival, which provides funds for local food banks and pantries. “Food insecurity affects people and families from all age groups, and summer months are especially tough,” Fliszar said. He reported that according to www.feedingamerica.org, 1 in 8 people, including 1 in 6 children, struggle See FoodStock pg 5

The event is open to the public, and reservations are not needed. Call 717-653-1202, ext. 2.

the Rock’n’Roll Time Machine, an oldies band from Manheim, beginning at 10 a.m. Food vendors that will be on-site will include a bakery truck, Thoze Guys Italian sandwiches, Mad Dash specialty grilled cheese, TJ’s ice cream, and Lancaster Brewing Company. Even with the lowered attendance, the 2018 event raised $12,500 for an initiative of the United Way of Lancaster called Summer Youth Experience. Summer Youth Experience includes programs that are carefully selected for their benefits to students, specifically helping at-risk youths bridge the gap between the end of the spring semester and the return to school in the fall. This year, organizers hope to raise more than $15,000 to benefit the program. Harlan noted that being involved with Rotary and specifically with the event has shown him how people in the area respond when others are in need. “There’s something special about Lancaster County in the way groups like Rotary embrace the community,” he said. Harlan cited Summer Youth Experience as an example of how area residents reach out to others. “These programs can change the trajectory of someone’s life for the better,” he stated. “That’s incredible to see.” He is also grateful for the benefits of his Rotary experience, saying, “It has helped me grow as a person and a leader.” Readers who would like more information about the event may visit the Lancaster Rotary website. Specific questions may be directed to rotaryww5K@ gmail.com.

FoodStock from pg 1 with hunger in Pennsylvania. “In Lancaster County, approximately 59,000 residents, including 1 in 5 children, go hungry on a regular basis,” Fliszar remarked. “Additionally, those depending on food pantries are coming from all walks of life,” he continued. “Looking at the bigger picture, food insecurity not only affects these individuals, it can have a negative impact on the entire community.” Following the festival, the FoodStock board of directors will determine where to disburse the proceeds so they do the most good. Past recipients have included the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, PowerPacks, the Manheim Central Food Pantry, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services, and Warwick Community Chest. FoodStock organizers are excited about the bands that will perform at the event. “We’ve got a great music lineup this year,” Hayden enthused. “Some of the area’s most talented musicians are coming together to help us fight hunger in our community. Straight out of Philly, Mo Lowda & The Humble recently returned from their European tour, and we’re excited to have them join us.”

Barons Fall in PIAA Volleyball Semifinals by Eric G. Stark

Manheim Central’s state playoff run came up one match short of the championship. The Barons lost 3-1 in the semifinals to York Suburban on Tuesday, June 4, ending an historic run for Central at Red Lion High School. The Barons (18-3) advanced to the state semifinals and their third meeting against a determined York Suburban squad. The teams split two meetings this season; Manheim losing the first 15-13 in the fifth and deciding game. Central won the second time, handing the Trojans a convincing 3-0 loss in the district final. The Trojans were looking for revenge, posting game scores of

27-25, 25-20, 23-25 and 25-23. With the win, Suburban earned the right to face Meadville, the District 10 champion, in the state final. It was evident that the district loss was fresh in the minds of the Trojan players. “I thought it was possible that they (Suburban) could beat us,” Baron’s coach Craig Dietrich said. “We beat them in districts and I knew they’d come out for blood. They played great defense. It reminded me of the Hempfield match (a league tournament semifinal loss) where were close but couldn’t quite get over the hump.” Dietrich said he was impressed with how well Suburban played for the entire match. Most teams, he said, will get hot for 10-12

points and then cool down, allowing the Barons to weather the storm. The Trojans, however, remained hot. “They wanted it,” Dietrch said, “and they took it from us.” “No disrespect to Meadville,” he said, “but the two best teams were in District Three and whoever won this semifinal match was going to win the state title.” The coach said that if the teams played again that Manheim might beat them; they are very evenly matched. In the third meeting, the Trojans played with a lot of intensity and energy and defended well. They focused on neutralizing the powerful hitting by Manheim’s star player, Mason Nissley. For the most part, they did just that, thanks to Suburban’s

Nate Bowman, a close friend who plans to room with Nissley at Messiah College next fall. Bowman, who had 17 kills and five blocks, was up to the challenge to block Nissley’s power at the net. “The fact that Bowman knows him so well plays a factor,” Dietrich said. “Bowman got the better of him this match.” Funny, though, an off day for Nissley is still a good day. The two-time (soon to be three-time) All-State selection still finished with 28 kills and four aces. The Barons, fighting off the first wave of intensity from the Trojans, took a 20-19 lead in game one and the score was tied 25-25, before Suburban pulled out the critical last two points. Central shook off the early blows from the Trojans and played well in game three and fought hard and close in game four. The score went back-andforth and the teams were even at Photo by Vaughn Brown 20-20 after a serve by Darien Manheim’s Blake Wagner drives a shot past York Suburban’s Colburn for the Barons. MERCHANDISER - Manheim Central Edition helped keep the Barons in the match, adding seven digs and a block. Junior Jeremiah Zimmerman had another strong game setting with 40 assists. But Suburban’s play at the net was too much. Two straight blocks by the Trojans helped them pull away in the fourth game and secure the match, ending the Baron’s season. “Any time something ends suddenly you need time to reflect,” Dietrich said. “(During the season) you tell the kids to keep their heads down and keep plugging away. I’ve had a chance to think about it. The program has been around for about 12 years and in a short period of time we’ve had a lot of success. It says a lot about the kids. “If you look at our team, they don’t look like volleyball players, but I hear all the time from coaches, ‘Man, you guys work really hard.’ That is really a great compliment.” They might not have the same bounce or be chiseled like the typical volleyball player, but they will out-work and out-hustle their opponent. “A lot of it is the town and the community; it’s a blue-collar town,” Dietrich said about the mentality of his team. “They believe in consistent, hard work. Once you find out who the families are, it makes sense. The father has worked the same job for 20-plus years, etc.” A lot of the success is because the Barons are aware of the task at hand. They win their match, celebrate that night and then move on and get back to work. There is practice the next day and preparation for the next match. “They listened and got coached up,” Dietrich said. The senior group of Nissley, Musser and Ben Wolford have been part of a great run of success, winning three straight Section Two titles in the L-L League - not dropping a match or a game in more than two years, Photo by Vaughn Brown w i n n i n g 3 5 s t r a i g h t s e c t i o n Mason Nissley slams one of his match-high 28 kills during games - winning the district title Manheim’s 3-1, PIAA semifinal loss to York Suburban last for the first time in program hisTuesday at Red Lion High School. tory (they lost in the district final

the previous year) and making the state semis (they played in the final the previous year). “Replacing those three guys is impossible with their legacies,” Dietrich said. “Some guys will play in doubles tournaments and once the fall season is over we’ll go out and see how we can get better. Once you experience successes you want to keep it going. We climbed the mountain and got knocked down. Now we want to

start the climb all over.” The future looks bright for the Barons. Zimmerman had an excellent first year as the starting setter. Juniors Colburn and Quintin Rohrer and sophomore Blake Wagner contributed and stepped up their play. assistance with housing, food, clothing, vehicle and home repair, appliance purchases and repairs, and utility payments. Androsky emphasized that the PA Hero Walk is run by volunteers, so the money does not go toward any staff expenses - only to helping veterans. Organizers have set a goal of raising $20,000 for the PA Hero Walk this year. Androsky said that after raising $2,000 at the first Columbia Hero Walk, organizers upped their goal to raising $5,000 at the second walk and just missed it by raising $4,600. Similarly in year three, the event raised $9,600 - just barely missing the $10,000 goal. However, Androsky said that the winds shifted last year as organizers set a goal to raise $15,000, and the event raised more than $16,000. Businesses and individuals who would like to support the Hero Walk but are unable to participate may mail donations or drop off contributions earmarked for the Hero Walk at Post 1306, 250 N. Seventh St., Columbia. Columbia Hero Walk registration for individuals and teams will open at 7 a.m. at Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. To register in advance, individuals may call 717-449-5635. Participants will receive an event T-shirt. Cyclists will depart at 7:50 a.m., and walkers and runners will step off at 8 a.m. Participants may complete 14 miles along the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail, finishing at Fisherman’s Wharf, the Falmouth access point off Route 441. Several exit points are available for individuals who would prefer to complete a shorter portion of the trail. Comfort stations with beverages and snacks will be offered at five points along the route. Transportation back to Post 1306 will be provided for participants with the exception of bicyclists. The top three individual and team finishers in both walking and biking categories will receive awards at a ceremony at Post 1306 after the race. Free refreshments and a chicken barbecue meal will be available for participants. “We had 74 participants last year,” Androsky said. “This year we hope to go over 100.” The annual walk is one of several ways that Post 1306 reaches out to veterans. The post also hosts an annual catch-andrelease fishing event for veterans at Lake Aldred and sponsors quarterly outings for the veterans from the Lebanon VA. For more information on the walk, readers may email cwvherowalk@gmail.com.

Mulberry Art Studios Showcases Work By Gerber

Jay Gerber is presenting his latest collection of work, titled “The Ethereal Meeting of Us,” at Mulberry Art Studios during the month of June. Mulberry Art Studios is located at 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster, and holds regular gallery hours from noon until 6 p.m. on weekdays. Gerber has been painting since the late 1970s/early 1980s. Originally a self-taught artist, he received some formal training at the Pennsylvania School of Arts before returning to self discovery. He began with oils, but he has since switched almost entirely to acrylic on canvas or board. The title, “The Ethereal Meeting of Us,” came from one of the exhibit’s central pieces. The approximately 40 paintings included in the exhibit cover a variety of subject matter, all tied together with the fluid expression of formal abstract. For more information, readers may visit www.mulberryartstudios.com.

Resurrection Catholic School teacher Mary Scaccia has announced her retirement after 21 years of teaching second grade. A product of Catholic school, Scaccia graduated from Sacred Heart of Jesus School and Lancaster Catholic High School. Catholic education and teaching have always been more than a job, and she attends the First Communion Mass for every student. Just out of Shippensburg University, Scaccia began teaching first grade at Mill Road Elementary in Elizabethtown. After five years, she relocated with her husband, Peter, several times but continued teaching religious education for her church or as a substitute in local schools. When she returned to Lancaster in 1995, she worked in the library at St. Anne School, which her children attended. She started at Resurrection in 1998. Scaccia received a master’s degree in education from Temple University and also earned a reading specialist certification from Millersville University. She will miss reading to students. She has made a tradition of reading favorites: “Charlotte’s Web starts the year; “The Night Before Christmas comes in December. Each day, she reads the same story by Clement C. Moore but illustrated by a different person. Students talk about the pictures and how they might draw them. Her devotion to teaching spills over to organizing special events such as the Day of Sharing, the annual giving tree and an Olympic ceremony when the Olympics take place. Pictures of her annual field trips, especially those to Central Market in Lancaster and a gnomethemed location in Kirkwood, get dozens of nostalgic comments and likes when posted on social media. Scaccia received a Golden Apple award in 2007 from the Harrisburg Diocese. She plans to remain in Lancaster, spend more time with her seven grandchildren and travel with her husband.
