Putting Patriotism On Display BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When Victor Gustafson looks out his window at Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community, he can see a wish come true. Gustafson, a Navy veteran, had wanted a flagpole on-site at the community for a while, and he was able to witness its dedication on May 24. “Victor had said a number of times,
‘It sure would be nice and patriotic to have a flagpole and an American flag waving in front of our facility,’” recalled Jim Day, life enrichment director and chaplain at Mt. Hope. Day and other staff members at Mt. Hope began to research ways to complete the project, eventually connecting with the Manheim Sertoma Club and the Manheim VFW Post 5956 Cyrus R. Peters Memorial Post. See Patriotism pg 2

Manheim Central Graduation Speakers Share Wisdom With Classmates t Manheim Central High School, all students are invited to audition to be a graduation speaker, said principal Joshua Weitzel. This year, speakers at the Class of 2022 ceremony on June 2 included valedictorian Sydney Heisey, Lisa Peng and Jiahnny Laboy. Sydney is the daughter of Don and Molly Heisey of Manheim. She said she felt pulled to try out as a graduation speaker because she wanted to honor the longtime tradition of valedictorians giving speeches during the ceremony. “I also got quite a lot of encouragement from teachers who wanted to know what I’d come up with to say,” she stated. For her speech, she focused on a variety of lessons she learned throughout high school, while drawing connections to an intensive climbing route called a via ferrata that she completed with her family at Nelson Rocks in West Virginia last summer. After graduation, Sydney plans to attend Liberty University to
“I wanted to leave a positive impact on others.” “My speech (was) about how I have been faced with adversity with having a learning disability and to shine the light on how it’s necessary to change your thinking about what success looks like when faced with challenges,” she said. After graduation, Lisa, who is the daughter of John and Lian Peng of Mount Joy, plans to attend HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s
Community College and then transfer to East Stroudsburg University to study athletic training. “I’m so glad I went to Manheim C e n t r a l ,” she remarked, “because it shaped me into the tough and encouraging woman I am today.” Jiahnny presented a speech titled “Preservation of Self-Love,” sharing a story about her personal self-love journey and the importance of taking care of your well-being. “I felt as though this is an important topic to discuss with my fellow classmates,” she ex plained. “It’s an important reminder or maybe even an eyeopener for others when we start our lives after high school.” Jiahnny is the daughter of Johnny and Glenni Laboy of Manheim. She plans to attend HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College while working as a lab technician before attending a university to complete her bachelor’s degree. She noted, “I’m so glad I went to Manheim Central, because I got to spend my last half of my senior year with my favorite teacher, Mrs. Anderson.”

Team Family Red Rose Thunder Plans Kids’ Basketball Camp BY ANN MEAD ASH
In January 2020, then-15-yearold Lucas Morrison of Manheim was the stat guy for the Ephrata Thunder, a semipro men’s basketball team playing in the American Basketball Association. A lot has changed in two years. The team is now called the Red Rose Thunder, and it now plays in the MidAtlantic division of the East Coast Basketball League. Lucas, now 18, is an official team owner - the youngest owner of a professional basketball team in the country. See Family pg 3

Lisa had won an award through the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center for her speech, which prompted her to share it with her Manheim Central classmates. “I auditioned to speak at graduation because I wanted to leave a positive impact on others,” she stated, noting that her speech focused on acceptance of differences. Gustafson raised the flag at the ceremony, Fisher said, adding, “More than a few people said they shed some happy tears at watching him raise the flag and the way the ceremony turned out.” Fisher emphasized that the flagpole installation and dedication was a joint effort of several community groups, something he’d like to encourage more of in his new role as post commander. “We need to reach our veterans as well as the whole community to reestablish a conversation and renew our sense of community,” he noted. Day said he anticipates the new flagpole will help continue to foster a sense of community at Mt. Hope. “Recently, I did the Pledge of Allegiance and almost everyone immediately put their hand over their heart and looked at the flag and said the Pledge with me,” he recalled. “It was a very moving experience. They all said they love having the flag in front of our building.”

ald Geib and resident and Navy veteran Bruce McMillian. Tracy Tunstall, VFW auxiliary president, read “Old Glory” at the ceremony, and Fisher, who is also the VFW chaplain, gave an invocation and benediction. “The flagpole is just east of the center of a grassy area in front of the building,” Day noted, adding that the placement was intentional so Gustafson can see the flag from his room. Day said having a flagpole at the Manheim community is important because Mt. Hope regularly houses veterans. He said the flag will always fly unless the weather is severe, and he noted that Gustafson was especially moved at the ceremony. “He really loved it and was very thankful for all involved,” Day remarked. “The residents present loved it, and folks stayed after for a while and were talking and enjoying a very important moment at Mt. 4 FOR YOUR CAR and TRUCK NEEDS HERE video within 48 hours after a game,” said Lucas, who noted that he likes how that allows the team to strategize. “You can see that (a certain) team has three players scoring 20-plus, but this guy is only shooting 40% from the free throw line, so you want to force him to do this,” said Lucas. Lucas was born into his association with professional basketball. His mother, Malin, who is co-owner, has coached basketball for more than a decade, and she has played the game nearly her whole life. She was chosen as one of eight young women from Sweden to attend basketball high school,
and she was selected to be a member of the team that represented Sweden in the world championships. She eventually came to the U.S. to play basketball for colleges in Delaware, where she earned her degree. She also got married and moved to Lancaster County, where Lucas was born. The Mid-Atlantic division stretches from Massachusetts to Virginia. The Thunder finished this season 6-6 and went into playoffs in fifth place. “We were invited to participate in the Brotherly Love Pro Am in Philadelphia,” said Malin. Lucas added that 15 current or former NBA players
will take part in the Pro Am, and he was excited to see how the Thunder players would do. At the Thunder’s last regular-season home game, Lucas was presented as a team owner. “The players gathered around me, and I could see they were happy for me,” he said. “That meant a lot.” Lucas added that the organization is more than a business venture for him and his mom. “It is special to see we are making an impact on players’ lives on and off the court,” he said. “This team is family and whether we win a championship or not, we will still be family.”

The event will be the 53rd NOSB Sängerfest, which is the German word for a singing festival. “The last (Sängerfest) was in 2018 in the Philadelphia area at a German club. It’s a festival that is held every two to three years,” explained Husler. “We were supposed to host in 2020, but COVID shut it down.” She noted that the concert was also canceled in 2021 because of the pandemic and that the next event will rotate to a different German club. For this year, seven choruses will perform individually and then combine for the finale, which will conclude with a performance of “God Bless America” in English. See Concert pg 5

“Anyone can join, but most people have a German heritage. We have about 2,000 members,” Husler noted. In addition to its German restaurant and social club, the Liederkranz offers four cultural groups. In addition to the chorus, the club has a Hobby Chor, an all-male chorus, and two German folk dance groups. The club holds several special events throughout the year, including a Sommerfest in June, a Parrot Fest in July, an Oktoberfest in September and a Christkindlmarkt in December. Tickets for the upcoming concert will be sold at the door. There will be separate prices for adults and for children age 12 and younger. “There are going to be seven German choruses represented that will be singing individually. They will each do a 15minute segment of their own repertoires. All of it is basically in German,” said Husler. “Our chorus, since we are the host, will perform last. We will perform music by German composers like Beethoven and Brahms and German folk songs. All seven groups will then get up together on the stage and perform five numbers in a mass chorus.” To prepare for the combined chorus performance, the various groups will rehearse earlier in the day prior to the concert. “At the rehearsal we will put everyone in their proper voice section soprano, alto, tenor and bass,” said Husler. “All the groups have the music ahead of time and they know the music, so it’s not that hard to put the five numbers together.” The large, combined choir will be accompanied by Lancaster Liederkranz chorus pianist Bill Rhoads. The chorus is part of the Lancaster Liederkranz German Cultural Club. Established in 1880, the club’s goal is to preserve German singing, dancing, music, language and customs. The club’s headquarters is located at 722 S. Chiques Road, Manheim.

Although HOHC in Lititz provides housing for women who are age 18 and older, Callie noted that the original focus of the ministry was on younger girls. “We are going back to serving minors for the safe home,” said Callie. “We have all these years of experience to utilize,” she said. Back in Lititz, program director Michelle Gibbs will continue to work with women in the maternity program while also striving to build up the aftercare program for new mothers who

“We reach more children in the summer than during the school year because each week we are in a different location,” said Nadine Welk, children’s ministry specialist coordinator with Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF), perhaps best known for the Good News Clubs the organization runs after school. Over the summer, CEF organizes Five-Day Clubs, vacation Bible school (VBS) programs, and Good News Camps. This year, summer programs will be held at 17 locations in Lancaster County. Welk explained that the basic ministry curriculum is the same for all programs, which begin with a 90-minute activity period including large group game time, welcome and prayer, a Word Up period with a catchy phrase concerning the main lesson, Bible verses and songs, a Bible lesson, a review, and closing games. Five-Day Clubs, which use the 90-minute basic format, are held in host homes. For the summer of 2022, host homes have been secured in the Hempfield area, the Lampeter-Strasburg area, Lititz, Mount Joy, the city of Lancaster, Manheim, Manheim Township, and Paradise. Hosts generally invite participants to their home, where CEF summer missionaries and staff oversee the program. VBS programs are held at churches. They add a snack and a 30-minute craft to the basic program. “The church that hosts us will provide volunteers to help with the crafts,” said Welk, who explained that CEF missionaries and staff work with the church VBS director on the craft and can be present to help if needed. CEF VBS programs are lined up at seven area churches. They are Smithville Church of God in New Providence, Monday, July 11, to Friday, July 15; Victory Church, Columbia, Monday, July 18, to Friday, July 22; Conestoga United Methodist Church (UMC), Conestoga, July 18, to 22; ACTS Covenant Fellowship, Strasburg, Monday, July 25, to Friday, July 29; Christ UMC, Lancaster, July 25 to 29; Crossings Community Church, Manheim, Monday, Aug. 1, to Friday, Aug. 5; and Refton Brethren in Christ Church, Refton, Aug. 1 to 5. Day camps, which are held weekdays from 9 a.m. to
3 p.m., are scheduled for Grace Baptist Church, Marietta, July 11 to 15, and Elizabethtown Grace Church, from Monday, Aug. 8, through Friday, Aug. 12. “The difference with camp is that we add a lot of enrichment activities,” said Welk. “This summer, we will be focusing on the Wordless Book, which is a way of explaining salvation to children without any written words.” Campers bring their own lunches, but a snack is provided. “(For camps) we have water day on Fridays,” said Welk. “The kids are encouraged to wear a bathing suit with a T-shirt over it, and we use buckets and hoses, and the kids love it.” “Our theme for all our programs this summer is ‘Turned Around,’” explained Welk. “All Child Evangelism Fellowship will hold Good News Clubs, of our lessons talk about how vacation Bible school programs, and Five-Day Clubs a belief in Jesus and a rela- throughout Lancaster County this summer. tionship with God transforms your life.” Welk said that CEF Lancaster summer missionaries and interns, ages 14 to 18, will train at Camp Harmony in western Pennsylvania in June. During their week at camp, they will learn the program and be evaluated on each part that they teach. “So it is older kids teaching younger about Jesus,” said Welk. Space is limited in the camps, and registration for each program is required one week before the program starts. Children may be registered for a program by clicking on the “summer programs” button at www.ceflan caster.org. Readers who have specific questions may call 717-569-5412.

Manheim Central Barons 2022 District Three Class 5A Champions BY ERIC PYLES
There is an old saying that goes ‘sometimes it is better to be lucky rather than good.’ That saying does not apply to the Manheim Central baseball
team. Sure, they are good, you do not compile a 22-3 mark and reach the PIAA playoffs without being good. And the luck part, you can chalk some of those wins up to luck but again, you do not get to 22-3
on just luck, even if you have five straight come from behind or walk-off post season wins. Their most recent victory may have come in the first round of the PIAA-5A tourney

but Central’s 2-1 win over Ephrata on June 2nd was much more important as it secured the team’s first ever District 3 title. “A great day and memories these guys will have forever!” said head coach Jason Thompson. The win was Manheim’s fourth of the district playoffs, all of them the come from behind variety. “Super proud of the guys fight in the district tournament, there was never any panic,” Thompson said. That calmness allowed the Barons to outlast Ephrata via a 2-1 final with Manheim plating both of their runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, flipping a 1-0 hole into a 2-1 cushion. From there it was just a matter of hanging on as Connor Rohrer was able to keep Ephrata in check save for a lone third inning run. Jared Murray closed the game out by securPhoto by Cheri Sine ing the final out via strikeout, giving the win to Rohrer while Baron shortstop Nolan Book fires to first base for the out after collecting the save for himself. fielding an Ephrata ground ball in Manheim’s 2-1, District-ChamSee Sports pg 9

Sports from pg 8 to stay mentally tough and positive.” Central’s resolve allowed them to counter two separate Tiger rallies with rallies of their own, including the game winning three run burst in the bottom of the seventh. Harbach kicked things off with a single, Book was clipped by a pitch to put two on with no outs. Collin Thompson pushed courtesy runner Chase Travitz across to make it an 8-7 game. Manheim hit a bump with their first out but quickly rebounded with another free pass, this one by Andrew Harrison. That brought Dylan Yoder to the plate, and he delivered the game winning hit, plating another courtesy runner, Clugston and Thompson, setting the 9-8 final. Thompson topped the victory with a nice bow, saying, “Super proud of their resolve and perseverance.” The scoring started back in the second with another three run Manheim burst courtesy of Neiles and his bases loaded double. After watching the Tigers score three in the top of the third, Central went back to work. This time it was Cayde Connelly providing the spark with a one run double that that made it 4-3. A Marple Newtown wild pitch pushed Central’s lead to 5-3. The Tigers came back with another three-run burst, this one in the top of the fifth, putting Manheim down 6-5. Connelly answered the call again, this time with a single to left that made it a 6-6 game. That set the stage for a Photo by Cheri Sine crazy seventh that saw Marple Manheim starter and winner, Connor Rohrer, delivers a pitch in the Barons’ 2-1 victory over Ephrata in the District Three 5A Newtown take an 8-6 lead only to have Manheim enjoy championship final at Earl Wenger Field on June 2.
“Connor pitched an amazing game and gutted it out,” said Thompson, “and then it was awesome to see Murray come in and close it out for us.” The pair combined for 10 strikeouts, two walks and allowed just three hits and that one earned run. That pitching performance allowed the Baron’s lone rally to be just enough. Collin Neiles led off the frame with a single. Ky Watson and Mason Weaver loaded the bases with singles of their own. Brady Harbach took advantage and lofted one to right field, allowing Ty Clugston, a courtesy runner for Neiles, to tie the game at 1-1. Nolan Book moved Man-
heim into the lead on the very next pitch with a single to right that scored Watson. The short rally ended there but Rohrer and Murry ensured the lead would stand. Riding high from the District 3-5A title, the Barons turned their attention to the PIAA playoffs and their firstround opponent, Marple Newton. The result was a back-and-forth game where Manheim needed another bottom of the seventh rally to pull out a victory, this one by a 9-8 final on June 6th. “We talk about riding the wave in the playoffs,” said Thompson. “There will be ups and downs and we continue

their second three-run rally, this one securing the one-run victory. Murray got the start and finished with a no decision after four and two-third innings. Connelly covered the next four outs on 30 pitches, leaving the final frame and victory to Rohrer. The trio combined for six strikeouts and four walks while surrendering 11 hits and eight runs. VOLLEYBALL Central’s other remaining PIAA playoff participant, the boys’ volleyball team, was unable to keep their season alive, falling to Christopher Dock Mennonite Academy by a 3-0 count on the 4th. Despite falling by scores of 25-15, 2725 and 25-20, head coach Craig Dietrich had “Zero Frustration” when asked about falling in the PIAA-2A quarterfinals for the fourth year in a row.
