Manheim Central Grads Adapt And Overcome anheim Central senior Troy Peters said a specific theme could sum up the past year for the Class of 2021: adapt and overcome. Peters, who was among the 211 graduates at the school’s ceremony on June 4, spoke at the ceremony about how the challenges of the past year only made the students stronger.
“For some of us, this past year took away jobs, much-needed money, even family members, but even with all that loss in our recent memory, things have been getting better,” he said, giving examples of student accomplishments and club activities at the school, including raising more than $15,000 for Four Diamonds through Mini-THON. “We overcame and even thrived.” The graduation ceremony, held
at Spooky Nook Sports, featured several student speakers, along with comments from faculty members and guest speaker Seth Obetz, a 1989 graduate of Manheim Central. Rachel King was named valedictorian. She plans to attend West Chester University in the fall and was recognized for her accomplishments at Manheim Central. In school, she was a member of the marching band, Science
Olympiad, and the Math, English and Science honor societies. She was also a National Merit Scholar. Eve Sheaffer was recognized as salutatorian. She plans to attend Franklin & Marshall College in the fall. At Manheim Central, she was named senior Student of the Month for April, was a recipient of a Women’s Club of Manheim award and was an AP Scholar with Honor award winner. She recalled her favorite moment of high school,

The biblical story of creation will come to life when Ruhl’s United Methodist Church hosts a drivethrough event on Saturday, June 26. The festivities will take place at the church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, from 10 a.m. to noon. Over the past year, the church has held several well-attended drive-through celebrations, said Kris Gray, one of the event organizers. “We did a drive to Bethlehem at See Creation pg 2

everyone deserves compassion. At Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community in Manheim, the least will be getting the most due to a capital campaign designed to continue to provide quality care and support to seniors. “In honor of Mount Hope’s 50th anniversary in June 2019, Mount Hope launched a capital campaign to address a dated facility that needs tender loving care,” said Kris Wilson, director of advancement. “We reached our halfway point with total donations and pledges coming in at just over $500,000. We are well on our way to the $1 million goal.”

noting that it happened after the final curtain of “Mary Poppins,” her senior-year musical. “At the end of each show, the whole cast lets out a big scream to commemorate each production,” she said. “The final scream of my senior musical is something I will remember for a very long time.” Speaker Andrew Rajaratnam, who will attend Penn State University in the fall, talked about wishing he had the chance to go through high school again. “You will never experience anything like high school,” he noted. “Though our journey did take a bump in the road the last year, it did not stop us from making memories we’ll take with us for the rest of our lives.” Principal Joshua Weitzel addressed the members of the Class of 2021 and reminded them of the significance of graduation. “Tonight serves as a turning point in the lives of those seated here tonight,” he said. Superintendent Peter Aiken agreed, adding that the graduates now have a new job to do: “Go and make your mark on the world.”

The guest speaker for the ceremony was Roger Peace, president of Word of Life Bible Institute in New York. “From me to you, congratulations,” he told the graduates. “Job well done.” He noted that the school’s theme for the past year was taken from John 15:13, which discusses “greater love.” Urging the graduates to follow the lessons of Jesus, he added, “This world doesn’t need another person who’s focused on himself. … The world needs people who love one another.”

Julia Martin, the valedictorian of Mount Calvary Christian School in Elizabethtown, said two passages from James 1 can be taken to heart by the Class of 2021. “James 1:2-3 talks about how the testing of your faith produces perseverance,” she told her classmates during the graduation ceremony on June 4 held at the school’s soccer field. She also quoted James 1:22, noting, “James encourages us to be doers of the Word. … Let us be intentional difference makers in this world.” Superintendent Daniel Sheard addressed the graduates, thanking God for the day and for guiding the students through the challenges of the past year. “ We have lived through some pretty difficult days, but we are here,” he said, “and we praise God for that.” Salutatorian Hunter Stewart also spoke. Noting that he was homeschooled through eighth grade, Stewart said he was nervous and worried about what to expect when he came to Mount Cal-

Help is still needed to reach the goal, she stated, which will allow the facility to upgrade its roof and parking lot area; improve public restrooms; update nursing stations and the therapy room; and renovate resident common gathering areas, such as two lounges and the dining hall. So far, 14 resident rooms have been renovated, with 29 still to be updated. Mount Hope has a mission of providing care to seniors regardless of their ability to pay, Wilson noted, adding that the capital campaign will help the facility continue to fulfill this mission, as much of the facility has not been updated since the home was built in the late 1960s. “The capital campaign will allow the facility to make improvements to continue to provide quality care,” Wilson said. “Every person deserves a dignified, well-maintained place to live. Contributing to the capital campaign will allow the home to continue to provide this care.” As the capital campaign continues, the public is invited to a virtual celebration, “Upon This Firm Foundation … Continuing Our Vision,” beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, July 16. A Zoom link will be available for the celebration at Mount Hope’s website beginning at 6:15 p.m. on the day of the event. Wilson said the celebration will include up-to-date information, personal testimonies of the care Mount Hope provides, an invitation and challenge to participate with a financial response and a vision for the future. “A challenge will be given to those participating in the virtual campaign
celebration on how they may see themselves joining with Mt. Hope to ensure that this mission continues strong,” she stated. “The capital campaign will allow the facility to provide quality care for the long-term future.” Wilson emphasized that Mount Hope provides a unique service. “There is an abundance of long-term care facilities and retirement communities in Lancaster County and surrounding areas for seniors in need of nursing care to live. Mount Hope allows seniors and disabled people to live with dignity, no matter their financial circumstances,” she ex plained, adding that the facility has achieved five stars, Medicare’s highest rating. “At its core, the Mount Hope mission is to serve the community and offer hope by providing affordable, quality nursing care in a wholesome Christian environment based on Christ’s model of care for ‘the least of these.’” For more information on Mount Hope, visit www.mthopenazarene.org or contact Wilson at 717682-8026.

“One of the reasons I wanted to start my own organization was to enable and empower volunteers to be involved in the whole process (of raising and training service dogs),” said Linzey Zoccola, who founded Phoenix Assistance Dogs (PAD) in 2009. Zoccola and assistant director Ashley Bosserman have recently begun working with dogs, volunteer trainers, and clients in the organization’s new Warwick Center offices in Lititz. Many of the dogs that become PAD service dogs are goldadors - a mix of golden retrievers and Labrador retrievers. “ We work with community breeders, and we breed as well in our program,” said Zoccola, who had 7-weekold Luxor - named for the Pixar office lamp - and Barley at the center during the interview. “Both Sumatra, the mom, and Easton, the dad, are from our program,” explained Zoccola. “Puppy raisers need good communication skills,” explained Zoccola. “Almost any lifestyle and activity level is wonderful as long as the individual is eager to learn.”
According to Zoccola, the only other qualifications are that someone in the household be able to drive the puppy to the vet and to the center for training and that the raisers have internet access for training purposes, since the puppy raiser manual is online. “We have had wonderful teenage puppy raisers and wonderful retired puppy raisers,” said Zoccola, who noted that active families with small children are welcome as well. Bosserman noted that puppy raisers are required to attend two lessons a month at the Lititz location to work with PAD trainers. She specified that puppy raisers help dogs learn all the skills they need as service dogs beginning with sit and stay, and, when the dog is older, how to open doors and shut off lights. “We cover a lot (of expenses) for our puppy raisers,” she said, pointing out that food, vet costs, and grooming are included. “(Puppy raisers) need to provide treats, toys, dog beds, and lots of love,” she said. PAD has developed a timeline for puppies that matches them with puppy raisers at two months old after they
have begun to be housetrained. At 12 months, the dogs undergo an evaluation, and at 14 months, X-rays are taken of hips and elbows, which are then evaluated by orthopedic veterinarians befor the dogs move forward with the program. Because it’s very important to PAD that clients are partnered with dogs that can meet their needs, it can take several rounds of clients meeting puppies before a match is made. “It depends on what the puppy needs to learn to make a final placement,” explained Zoccola, who noted a smaller female dog with an upbeat personality would not be matched with an individual who has weight-bearing mobility issues. “We would look for individuals who need retrieving and door opening (for that dog),” she said, adding that during meetings PAD representatives and puppy raisers examine dog and client interaction. “We are looking at the individual’s body language when they’re working with the dog,” she noted. “We are watching how the dog is interacting with that individual.” Zoccola added that puppy raisers have input into this process. “We

The Manheim Central baseball team beat Strath Haven, 5-2, in the first round of the state class 5A playoffs last Monday at Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth. “Very satisfying and proud of the guys,” Barons’ coach Jason Thompson said about gaining the state quarterfinal win. “They worked hard in this heat against a

Eberly, a senior shortstop, was 2-for-4 at the plate, including a key 2-RBI triple in the top of the seventh to give the Barons some breathing room. Manheim scored three times in the seventh inning, as Ky Watson
singled with one out and Weaver was hit by a pitch. Colton Book crushed a pitch to left field for an RBI double. Emberly followed with his triple to center field. Sophomore third baseman Brady Harbach, who was 3-for-3 and scored a run, led off the second with a double. Strath Haven tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth. In the District Three Class 5A fifth place game on June 3, the Barons rallied for a 3-2 walk-off win over Lampeter-Strasburg, punching a ticket to the state playoffs. The winning run came on a throwing error that allowed catcher Mason Weaver to score. Manheim took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Malakai Zilinski’s RBI double that knocked in Collin Thompson. L-S took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third. Weaver’s RBI single knocked in Trey Derck to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh. Weaver was 1-for-2. Zilinski was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Derck had a pinch-hit single to lead off the bottom of the seventh. Junior Connor Rohrer pitched a gem, yielding just two hits and striking out seven in going the distance on the mound. VOLLEYBALL The Barons went down swinging, battling to the bitter end in an epic contest that ended with Garden Spot pulling out a 3-2 victory in the state Class 2A quarterfinals on June 5 at Manheim Township High School. The Spartans, who beat Manheim (13-7) in three previous matches and dethroned the three-time Section Two champions, led 2-0 before the Barons came storming back. The

sistent than we were with that. So, you know, I credit them for being more consistent. We had our chances and had our opportunity to take the match. We just couldn’t finish.” Dietrich said he is proud of his team, which he noted battled all season, noting that Manheim was playing for last year’s team, the district and section champion that did not get an opportunity to defend their titles. This year’s squad made it to the LancasterLebanon League and district semifinals. Seniors Blake Wagner and Jeremiah Zimmerman, both twotime All-State selections, led a young team with big-time play, as well as grooming the younger players, which included three freshmen - Peter Burkart, Logan Groff, and Jacob Moyer - in the starting lineup. “You know, I don’t think it’s any secret, we were going to rely a lot on Blake,” Dietrich said. “He was going to get us through a lot of matches offensively and Jeremiah just, being a three-year starter, really for a lack of a better term, sets the table for us. He knows exactly what I want done. He did a nice job of bringing along a younger team like we had and giving them the opportunity to be confident. When we had a lead, he gave them the opportunity to attack the ball and if they did not succeed the first time, he’d go right back to them. Their leadership on the court is something that if we didn’t have it, there is no way we’d go as far as we did.”

Tom Oehme, coordinator of the 2021 Lititz Historical Foundation (LHF) Antiques Show, is glad to see the event returning. “Last year’s antique show was canceled,” he noted, adding that this year’s show will have a new venue, among other changes. The 58th show is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, June 25 and 26, at the Lititz recCenter, 301 W. Maple St., Lititz. On June 25, the show will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on June 26, it will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Plenty of free parking will be available at the rec center and also at the Warwick Middle

He stated that dealers plan to travel from as far away as New Hampshire. “There is one from Ohio and another from upstate New York,” Oehme said. The show is known to offer diversity among the items that will be available for sale, and as in the past, items offered for sale should include plenty of Americana, country primitives, and unexpected items of interest.
