Sweet Pea Plants Virtual Garden By Ann Mead Ash

More than 10 years ago, Stephanie Paige Cole, founder of Sweet Pea Project, an organization that offers comfort and support to families that have experienced the death of a baby, and her board members began holding a Sisters and Brothers

Picnic for children who had a sibling who was lost during pregnancy or infancy. This year’s event was to be held on Saturday, June 6, at Dutch Wonderland. When the picnic was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, Cole wanted to re-create a part of the picnic in time for Mother’s Day, which was held on May 10.

Sweet Pea Project, an organization that offers comfort and support to families that have experienced the death of a baby, has created a virtual flower garden that mothers and other family members may use to honor the child they lost. Although the virtual garden was created for Mother’s Day, it will be available into the future for those who would like to dedicate a flower to their child.

THANK YOU, GROCERY STORE WORKERS!

In order to better accommodate its current group of rescued cows, sheep, goats, pigs and other farmed animals, as well as to provide space for even more animals in need, the Lancaster Farm Sanctuary recently relocated to a larger facility.

The nonprofit sanctuary, founded in the summer of 2017 by Sarah Salluzzo and Jonina Turzi, was previously located at 558 Milton Grove Road South in Elizabethtown. The sanctuary’s new address is 1871 Milton Grove Road, Mount Joy. Although the new location is only 2 miles away from the previous farm, the new property has much more pasture space. “The previous farm was about 5 acres but only 3 was habitable, because there was a creek and wetlands,” explained board member Sara Petrosky. “The new farm is almost 18 acres, and almost all of it is pasture.” The Lancaster Farm Sanctuary, which was opened in the summer The biggest benefit of the new loca- of 2017 in Elizabethtown by Jonina Turzi and Sarah Salluzzo tion is that the sanctuary will not have (not shown), recently moved to a larger location in Mount Joy. to turn down as many requests by area police, humane workers and others who are seeking neighbors,” Petrosky noted. “(The new location) will enable us to take in a lot more animals so we don’t help for farmed animals in life-or-death situations. “We have people asking almost daily, ‘Can you take have to say no so often.” in this animal?’ A lot of times the requests are by the She noted that when an animal first comes to the farm, police. are looking for homes for the animals,” Petrosky pointed out. “In our case, they all come to live here for the rest of their lives.” The sanctuary is an all-volunteer organization, and it relies on community donations to pay for veterinarians’ services, food for the animals, bedding and ongoing care. Additionally, the sanctuary recently launched a capital campaign to finance the construction of a new barn and fencing at the site, which will cost approximately $120,000. Prior to the coronavirus pandemic, tours of the site were offered every Saturday from May through October. “Since the isolation started in midMarch, we have been doing virtual tours that have been widely viewed,” Petrosky said. “We also have bedtime stories with the animals on Thursday and Sunday nights at 7:30 p.m., where we read children’s books to our baby goats and sheep.” The farm also offered a yoga program that included a onehour class followed by a 30minute walking tour of the sanctuary. This program is also currently being offered virtually. To view the offerings, readers may visit www.facebook.com/ lancasterfarmsanctuary and choose Videos. It is projected that the tours and yoga will resume when the Lancaster County goes to the green status. TeenHope from pg 1 have been working together to provide students with education regarding anxiety, depression, and suicide prior to the screenings. “ W hen I learned of (MHALC’s) existing program, it seemed to be a perfect fit, said Kim Moore, director of TeenHope. That realization led to a pilot program at a couple of Lancaster County high schools, where Gaudioso has spoken to students who were participating in screenings. Gaudioso educates teenagers about mental health treatments, which include therapy, medication if needed, having supportive people around, and educating oneself about symptoms. She also talks about the steps involved in getting help and the different types of therapists available, such as psychiatrists, psychologists, or licensed social workers, and she talks about what students can expect during the screening. Part of Gaudioso’s presentation is to encourage students to be honest during the screening. “I tell them they need to be

honest and true to themselves because it will only help them, she said, adding that she goes over the signs of depression and anxiety in detail with students and asks them to take a serious look at their own behavior. She asks them to look at things they once participated in that they are no longer doing, such as communicating with friends, completing schoolwork, playing a sport, or spending time with family. Kim McDevitt, executive director of MHALC, noted that the organization is trying to be proactive in facing the increased rate of anxiety and depression in teenagers. “We are working diligently to remove the barriers that prevent one from getting the help they need, said McDevitt. “Mental health disorders can affect school performance, harm relationships, and lead to suicide, (so) we have increased our efforts in educating students on the importance of mental wellness, how to identify what a mental health challenge is, and how they can receive

support for themselves and others.â€? W hen Gaudioso speaks to students, she tries to allay anxiety and fear about participating in a mental health screening. “(I tell them this is) just like getting your height, weight, and vision checked (at school),â€? she said. “You get your mental health checked.â€? Gaudioso explained that the screenings are done by licensed professionals, and students are referred to other mental health specialists depending on the test results. Following a presentation, the students will be surveyed to gauge the impact of the information they have received. “We feel it’s important for students to have as much information as possible so they know it’s normal to struggle in these areas ‌ and there is help available for everyone,â€? said Moore. Readers who would like to learn more about MHALC may visit www.mhalancaster.org. More information about TeenHope may be found at http://scclanc.org/teenhope.

A special part of the picnic is a chance to visit an area inside Dutch Wonderland that has been designated as a permanent Sweet Pea Project Remembrance Garden. “It has a big tree and hundreds of flowers, and our logo and sign is there,” said Cole, who noted that she is continually amazed at how the siblings flock to the garden during the picnic. “There’s pizza, ice cream, and roller coasters, and these (siblings) stop in the middle of this super fun day to plant a flower,” she said. “It has been the most meaningful part of our picnic.” To give bereaved mothers and their families an opportunity to join together in a similar and safe way, Sweet Pea created a virtual flower garden. “I thought we should try to create a sense of community and salvage that flower piece,” said Cole, who noted that families do not forget the feeling of losing a child. She added that because of the quarantine, the spring of 2020 may have been even more difficult for those who lost a child. “Parents who (have lost a child) are already feeling isolated, and then they come to Mother’s Day,” explained Cole. “The isolation was really piling up this year.” The virtual flower garden, which can be reached on Facebook or Instagram using the hashtags #stillamothergarden and #sweetpeaproject, acknowledges bereaved mothers and honors the children they love and miss. “ We are still their mothers. That deserves to be remembered and celebrated,” wrote Cole in an invitation to mothers to take part. Those who participated posted a photograph of a flower on Facebook or Instagram along with the child’s name and the hashtags. Those wishing to post flowers may continue to do so. Cole recalled the struggles she endured facing her first Mother’s Day after losing her daughter. “When you lose a child, you feel like you’re the only one who ever suffered through this,” she said. “(It can be beneficial to have) a place you can scroll through quietly without having to (leave your home), and yet know you are part of something … you’re not alone.” “It gives a sense of unity,” Cole continued. “Even though we didn’t join together and put the

As businesses seek to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, several resources are available to them. The U.S. Chamber has unveiled its Reopening Business Digital Resources Center to equip America’s business community with the latest state guidelines, sector-specific guidance, small business advice, and other tools and resources as businesses look to reopen safely and keep employees and customers healthy and informed. The resources center also includes a customizable workplace flyer to help businesses communicate the steps they are taking to keep people safe and prevent the spread of COVID-19 to employees and customers. To learn more, readers may visit www. uschamber.com/reopening -business. Locally, the Lancaster Chamber and the Economic Development Company of Lancaster County collaborated to create a $33.4 million Lancaster County Economic Recovery Plan approved by the Board of Lancaster County Commissioners in May. A resource to support Lancaster County-based businesses has been developed and may be visited at www.recoverylancaster.com. The website is a resource to provide pathways to emergency funding, free personal protective equipment (PPE), pandemic-related educational information, and advice. The goal is to help businesses

operate safely and to fuel resolve to chart a new course forward. The site will be the main access point to both the $25 million Small Business Recovery & Sustainability Fund and $6 million in free PPE, the two key programs in phase one of the Economic Recovery Plan. Starting on June 8, county-based businesses with 100 or fewer employees can now register at the aforementioned website for kits with PPE-related items including face masks, hand sanitizer and thermometers. The supply is significant and is intended to serve most of Lancaster County’s small businesses. The site’s grant application portal opened to Lancaster Countybased businesses with 20 or fewer employees on June 15; it will remain open through 6:59 p.m. on Friday, June 19. Grants will not be awarded on a first-come, firstserved basis; individuals have

through June 19 to submit applications. Once the application portal closes, the grant committee will begin evaluating all applications received. Those meeting the criteria and demonstrating the greatest need will be sent to the Lancaster County commissioners for approval, and recipients will be notified by email. The first phase of the funding program will offer grant opportunities totaling $10 million. In subsequent phases of the plan, the Recovery & Sustainability Fund is expected to offer an additional $15 million in grant awards to Lancaster County-based businesses with 100 or fewer employees. Economic Recovery Plan funding comes from the $95 million in Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act money that Lancaster County received from the federal government.

Library Friends Post Fundraiser The Friends of Manheim Community Library has announced an online Tupperware party. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Friends to benefit library programs and services. Purchases will be shipped directly to customers’ homes. Additionally, for each party booked through the Friends event, the library

will receive a set donation amount. The fundraiser began on June 8, and orders will be accepted online through Monday, June 22. For a link to the fundraiser, readers may visit https://manheimlibrary.org/ more-fundraising-events/. The consultant for the party is Ellen Kalicicki.

Help Businesses

Like banks across the country, Northwest Bank (NWBI), headquartered in Warren, has been working to help small businesses curb the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. As soon as the Small Business Administration (SBA) released guidance to banks on the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), Northwest teams assembled to analyze the details and develop an open, client-friendly approach to the application process, no matter a business’s industry or size. The company launched a number of ways to connect with clients and work with them to collect the necessary application information, according to Mark Reitzes, Northwest’s head of commercial banking. application portal. “As soon as our portal opened, the company’s business bankers proactively reached out to clients to let them know that the bank was ready to take applications,” Reitzes said. “We provided checklists, a step-by-step video and FAQs to ensure they fully understood the relief program and requirements. We received applications from businesses of all sizes and industries across our entire four-state footprint.” Despite Northwest’s efforts, nationwide demand was much greater than expected. Funds were drained in just a few days after launch and the SBA stopped accepting applications. While many banks followed the SBA’s lead and stopped taking applications between the first and second rounds of government funding, Northwest took a different approach. In hopes that the PPP would be funded for a second round, the bank continued to help clients gather and prepare application information for submission. Because of this approach, Northwest was ready to submit applications when the SBA’s loan portal reopened. According to Reitzes, nearly 100% of the PPP loan applications that Northwest received were approved by the SBA - a total of 3,700 loans that will provide more than $425 million worth of relief. Northwest’s efforts served employers of all sizes across a wide span of entities, including manufacturing, restaurants, religious organizations, professional services, beauty salons and contractors. These efforts helped protect more than 35,000 employees. Northwest Bancshares Inc. is the holding company of Northwest Bank. Northwest operates 206 full-service community banking offices and eight free standing drive-through facilities in Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio and Indiana. Since mid-March, volunteers have given thousands of hours to pack 120,000 crisis response boxes. In April, CPFB served nearly 175,000 people across 27 counties and distributed more than 44% more food than it did during April 2019. Agency partners are settling into the new system of food distribution. CPFB reported that these partners have become creative and efficient in getting food to families in need, while practicing social distancing. Keeping up with the increase in demand while navigating the disruptions in the food supply chain has been the greatest challenge. However, with any challenge, there is an opportunity for innovation. In early May, the CPFB began distributing meals from Operation BBQ Relief. This endeavor turns donated food that comes in restaurant-size

As summer approaches, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB) is working with its partners to distribute even more food to those in need. CPFB continues to see an increase in demand and is committed to providing crisis response boxes until at least Wednesday, Sept. 30, in recognition of the growing economic impacts of the COVID-19 crisis. Additionally, CPFB has announced that donations made at www.centralpafood bank.org/campaigns/hunger freesummer/ will be matched up to $10,000. The CPFB’s work over the summer will include providing food to children who usually rely on the meals provided at school during the academic year and who lose this food source when the school year ends. Since March, the CPFB has distributed about 12 million pounds of food to hundreds of partner agencies in 27 counties. The CPFB is like a wholesale distributor of charitable food. packaging into family-friendly frozen meals for charitable distribution. Each frozen container has a complete ready-to-eat meal, including healthy protein, vegetables, and another side dish for a family of four. The meals go easily from the freezer to the oven to the dinner table. The CPFB has a long-standing partnership with the agriculture community. The CPFB has signed on to a new U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) program to rescue arrange for people in need to receive food that would otherwise be dumped or turned over in the field. Through the USDA’s Farmers to Families program, the CPFB will work with several local farmers including Lancaster Farm Fresh, a co-op of local farmers in and around Lancaster County, and Brian Campbell Farms in Bloomsburg to get fresh fruits, vegetables, pork, chicken, dairy products, and eggs to the people CPFB serves. The USDA buys the food from farms and pays a distributor to put it together into neatly packaged boxes to be delivered to CPFB’s partner agencies for distribution. Pennsylvania was awarded $255,373, from the USDA’s Farm to Food Bank Program. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture will distribute to the CPFB to reimburse farmers for costs associated with harvesting, packing, processing, and distributing donated agricultural surplus. The funding will pay for 200,000 pounds of cheese that will be distributed to food banks statewide. The Farm to Food Bank Program was created in the 2018 federal Farm Bill and was modeled after the Pennsylvania Agricultural Surplus System (PASS). Pennsylvania’s funds are equitably distributed through the CPFB and its 13 subcontractors to procure surplus agricultural products from Pennsylvania farmers and food processors. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s $1.5 million Pennsylvania Agricultural Surplus System serves as a match for the federal Farm to Food Bank Program. For more information on what the CPFB is doing to help families in need, readers may contact Jennifer Sands at 570-768-0921 or jsands@centralpafood bank.org. 1-4-3 Day Boosts Acts Of Kindness individuals had the opportunity to show the positive impact that neighborliness can have during more difficult times by recognizing and thanking essential workers and frontline employees through acts of kindness and appreciation. As many Pennsylvanians prepared to celebrate 14-3 Day at home, the state updated its Kindness Generator website to provide extra inspiration. The website, https:// 143day.dced.pa.gov/, includes a Kindness Tracker, a tally of all the great deeds Pennsylvanians did throughout the day, which are counted by using the hashtag #143DayinPA. To join the conversation, readers may follow visitPA on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram and use #143DayInPA to keep up with all the good deeds and acts of kindness.
