Sharing Hope At Relay For Life By Chelsea Peifer

New Holland police officer Wendell Metzler and his family had participated in the Relay For Life of Lancaster County for many years in support of a close friend who was fighting cancer. Then, in the summer of 2018 on a family vacation to Virginia Beach, Metzler had to be taken into the emergency room due to excruciating pain and the sudden inability to walk. He was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma. “As a public servant, I had always taken great pride in helping others,” shared Metzler. “Through my times as a volunteer firefighter, EMT, and police officer, I

never had to rely on others for help ... but God humbled me.” Metzler shared about his experience in celebration of one year of survivorship during the opening ceremony as the 2019 Honorary Survivor at the 26th annual Relay For Life of Lancaster County at Conestoga Valley High School. “I will forever be in debt to all the people who surrounded me in my weakest moments with prayers, meals, cards of encouragement, visits, and phone calls,” said Metzler to the audience gathered around the track at the school. “(Relay For Life) is a special time to honor those who have lost their fight with cancer and support those who are fighting cancer today.” See Relay For Life pg 5

The FUNguys For Life team (pictured) was one of 112 teams that participated in the Relay For Life of Lancaster County on June 7 and 8 at Conestoga Valley High School. Team captain and Cochranville resident Brenda Shelton (back, second from right) said the team name is in honor of her husband, Robert Shelton, who had a mushroom business and passed away in 2009. The FUNguys For Life raised $18,312 toward the event grand total of more than $672,462.

In addition, food items that will be available for purchase will include sub sandwiches, salads, and pizza. In addition to its age and historical significance, the Mueller House is important to Lititz architecture and the mission of the LHF, explained Paul. “(The house is) an authentic version of the way it appeared both inside and out as erected in 1792,” said Paul. “(It) is an untouched example of building techniques and conventions brought straight from the Palatine region of Germany, Switzerland, and Moravia by early and mid-18thcentury immigrants.” Paul added that the Mueller House is an especially pure example of such building conventions. “These conventions are the roots of what Lititz was and remains,” he said. Paul stated that in the last few months,

the interior of the Mueller House was repainted at a substantial cost to LHF. Each year, the house requires gutter work, power washing, window and shutter repairs, and maintenance for heating and cooling issues. There is a cost to attend the show, but discounts are available for those who obtain a hard copy show card, clip ads from trade

The LHF Antiques Show, which has been held since the early 1960s, is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, June 28 and 29, at Warwick Middle School, 104 Maple St., Lititz. On June 28, the 57th annual show will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on June 29, it will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Plenty of free parking will be available. Funds raised by the event help maintain the Mueller House. The show is known to offer diversity among the items that will be available for sale. “There will be scads of smalls, mediums, and larges too,” said Paul. “(The show will) include plenty of Americana, country primitives, and sufficient unexpected offerings to keep even the most seasoned shoppers interested and surprised.” Organizers note that in 2019, attendees will find weathervanes, Christmas and holiday items, country furniture in first generation paint, wooden carvings, butter prints, redware, signs, blue decorated stoneware, textiles, wrought iron implements, decoys, hooked rugs, fraktur, and tramp art. More dealers than in the past have been recruited for this year’s event. “The show will feature 57 dealers from seven states, our largest dealer count ever,” said Paul. Dealers are known to travel from neighboring states, including New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Maryland, and Delaware. Food items available for purchase at the show will include home-baked goods based

Relay For Life from pg 1 Relay For Life of Lancaster County kicked off on the evening of June 7, with 112 teams and more than 1,000 total participants taking turns walking around the track overnight until a closing ceremony at 11:30 a.m. on June 8. This year’s event raised more than $672,462 for the American Cancer Society. Organizer Stephanie Delp noted that the Lancaster event is the second-largest in the nation in terms of total funds raised. Delp said that she always looks forward to the opening ceremony, which includes a survivor lap. Cancer survivors - whether diagnosed a few days or a dozen or more years ago - are invited to take a lap around the track as the crowd cheers them on. A Caregiver Lap held later in the evening honors those individuals who have stood by their loved ones on their journeys with cancer. The 2019 Honorary Caregiver was Cheyanne Leid of New Holland. At the recent Relay, luminarias emblazoned with the names of people who have died of cancer surrounded the track, and a special luminaria ceremony took place at dusk to remember those lives touched by cancer. Dr. David Cziperle, a thoracic surgeon with the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute, spoke to the audience before the luminarias were lit and the names of those being honored were read. “It’s very moving,” described Delp. “Really the best way to say it is that Relay For Life is not an event; it’s an experience.” Plenty of fun activities were peppered into the mix to spur walkers on as they per-

severed through the night, including a movie on a big screen, games and relays, frozen T-shirt and Twister competitions, yoga and Zumba, children’s entertainment, trivia, crafts, and themed laps like Ready for Beddie and Here Comes the Sun. Music was blasting for the duration of the event, with live performances by Matt Wheeler, Mandy Salimbeni, Dreadnought Brigade, Peggy Kurtz Keller, Black Cat Band, and Leo DiSanto of Vinegar Creek Constituency. Many Relay teams are made up of cancer survivors or individuals who have family and friends who are survivors or who have lost their battle with the disease. Others, like Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute oncology nurse Julie Justice, know innumerable people affected by cancer. This was the eighth year that Justice participated in the Relay For Life. She served as team captain for the 52-member Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health team, which raised more than $22,735. “It’s very rewarding to see our patients that are survivors at the walk and to be able to celebrate their journey with them,” Justice said. “Cancer patients are a very special population. They’ve got resilience.” Relay For Life got its start in 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Wash., to raise money for the American Cancer Society. He raised $27,000, and the following year 19 teams took part in a similarly styled

Strawberry Roundup from pg 1 impacted the results. Project leader Ralph Ellenberger of Mount Joy noted that several growers had excellent crops the week before the roundup, but their plants had slowed production or quit producing altogether by June 5. “Some will be early, and others will be late,” he said pragmatically. “It’s a good learning experience for the kids,” said Michelle Anger

Home Center. Ten youths ranging between ages 8 and 19 entered the best berries from their patches for adjudication. Well, some of them did. “Not all of them ended up with berries because of the weather,” explained Lori Little, 4-H Extension educator. Too much rain and several bouts of hail hampered the crops. The timing of the event also

of Maytown. Her daughters Gabby and Gracelynn are part of the Mount Joy Community 4-H Club and are raising strawberries. “There are a lot of life lessons: finances, hope, and disappointment,” Michelle added. Professional grower John Shenk evaluated the berries on flavor and looked for uniform size and color. “It’s nicer to have larger (berries), but it’s not necessary,” Shenk commented. “I think customers will come back for flavor.” The entrants were divided by experience. The berries exhibited by Amanda Ellenberger of Mount Joy netted her the grand champion ribbon in the older group, and Gabby received the same honor in the younger group. The reserve grand champions were Justin Zimmerman of Elizabethtown and Callison Miller of Manheim, respectively. All of the strawberries were auctioned off to Rotary members. The Keller family has run the auction for 54 years and twice sold a quart of berries for $600. Amanda’s berries nearly reached that amount, selling for $550. Gabby’s berries sold for the

second-highest amount: $225. As the proceeds from the auction went back to each exhibitor, the growers who had no berries to enter were given strawberry pies to sell. Several of the pies were accompanied by gift certificates for dinner that evening at The Loft. Additionally, the proceeds of two pies went to the Max Smith Scholarship Fund, and the Rotary club presented a $750 check to Little for the fund. Bad weather aside, both Shenk and Ralph noted that the number of entrants has declined in recent years. Shenk entered the roundup as a child, and he recalls competing against at least two dozen other young people. “Fewer kids live on farms,” Ralph pointed out. “They have less space for a garden. It’s a challenge to get the quantity of strawberries (needed for the roundup).” The roundup provides growers with the opportunity to have their fresh berries evaluated. When all of the community clubs come together for the showcase in August, the growers will submit other strawberry-related projects. First-year members, who have spent the spring and summer weeding and mulching their plants in preparation for a crop the following year, will enter posters. The older members can make things like recipe or trivia cards or enter carefully tended potted plants. While giving his reasons for ranking the berries, Shenk gave some tips about raising strawberries. “Usually the first harvest is the best, but you can keep them for three years if they’re managed well,” he said. After the harvest is over, the plants should be mowed and the rows narrowed so there is room for the plants to grow back. “From Labor Day to the first hard freeze, the cells are deciding which will be berries and which will be leaves,” Shenk said. “It’s not too late (to plant now) for next year. Just make sure they have enough water to encourage them.” For more information about 4-H, readers may contact Little at 717-394-6851 or lmh12@psu.edu.

Restaurant Opens At Warwick Woodlands

R041095

The Owl’s Nest Restaurant & Sippery located on Moravian Manor’s newest campus, Warwick Woodlands, opened its doors on June 3. The eatery features an array of daily fresh, local farm-totable and sea-to-table comfort food. The alfresco dining restaurant is located at 600 W. Sixth St. in the newly completed Oaks Campus Center and Woods Apartments. Open to the public with no reservations needed, launch dinner hours are Mondays through Thursdays from 4:30 to 8 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 4:30 to 9 p.m. Enhanced hours will be added in time to include breakfast and lunch offerings as well. According to Bill Kehler, general manager of dining services at Moravian Manor, a majority of the proteins on the menu at The Owl’s Nest will be sourced from Indian Ridge Provisions, based in Telford. Additional food partners include Royal Tide Salmon Co., Freebird, Fox Meadows Creamery, Dutch County Soft Pretzels, and Whiff Roasters. While The Sippery maintains a liquor license, it is a “club license,” which means the establishment can only serve residents and guests of residents of Moravian Manor and Warwick Woodlands. Visit www.moravianmanor.org or www.warwickwoodlands.org for a complete menu.
