Revitalizing The Square
Concert Will Benefit Ukrainian Refugees BY CATHY MOLITORIS
hen Deb Olsen watched the news of the war in Ukraine, she felt pulled to take action. The drummer and leader of the band Steel Radiance decided to organize a concert to benefit the Ukraine War Refugee Aid Fund. The concert will be held on Saturday, June 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Shack, 662 S. Oak St., Manheim. Along with music from Steel Radiance, the show will feature a performance by Anna Kozyar, a Ukrainian refugee who recently resettled in the area. Steel Radiance - which also includes lead singer Terri Brown, lead guitarist and vocalist Gabbie Bonet and bassist Lisa Rettew, with

From historic significance to small-town charm, the town square is a quintessential part of Manheim. Now the borough is hoping to make it safer for drivers and pedestrians. The Market Square Revitalization Project will make improvements to the center island, rework parking spaces and add aesthetic touches to the square. The project will be funded through a variety of means, with the most significant contribution coming from a multi-modal transportation grant, said James Fisher, borough manager. As part of the project, the center island will be widened to allow for a pedestrian sidewalk, Fisher noted. “When people park in the middle, they can get right to the sidewalk and walk down to a crosswalk at either end,” he stated. “We are proposing a crosswalk in the middle as well.” The island will be extended down to the end crosswalks as well to provide a place to wait midway through crossing the street, he said.
Pam Snyder occasionally filling in for Rettew has been performing together for seven years. “The music we play is classic rock and blues,” Olsen noted. “We’re an all-female band, and we perform songs from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s, all cover songs.” The band was performing at a recent event in Lititz when Olsen was introduced to Kozyar. “She is from Kyiv, and she’s living here with her uncle, and we invited her to sing with us,” Olsen recalled. “She sang two songs, and it just broke my heart. In one of the songs, the lyrics were, ‘I have no home.’ Her mom was there, and I saw her crying, and I just thought, ‘How can we help?’” The concert is free, but donations will be

accepted for the fund through the Bethany Slavic Church in Ephrata. “It’s a congregation mainly consisting of immigrants and refugees from Ukraine, Russia and Belarus,” Olsen stated. The church’s Ukraine War Refugee Aid Fund was created to help provide evacuation, temporary housing and other accommodations for refugees in Poland, Romania and other nations. Olsen noted that while Kozyar’s father had to remain in Ukraine to fight, the rest of the family is adjusting to life in Lancaster County. “When you hear about the war and what’s going on from someone who has been there, it’s just heartbreaking,” Olsen said. She encourages people to come to the concert to not only raise funds for the refugees but also to meet Kozyar. “She has a beautiful voice, but beyond that, she has a story to tell,” Olsen stated. “People who come to the concert can hear some music, listen to someone who has been personally affected by the war and learn how they can help.” For more information on the concert, search for “Live Music in the Park with Steel Radiance” on Facebook.

A variety of streetscape measures will also be included in the revitalization project, Fisher said, adding that details are still being finalized but will include replacing traffic signal posts with a more ornamental option, adding vegetation to the area and installing new sidewalks. Fisher said construction could start as early as 2023, with the project possibly completed by the end of next year. At least two public meetings will be held to get input from the community on some of the streetscape options, he said. The revitalization project began as an offshoot of a larger connection study completed by the borough that looked at improving traffic flow on a broader scale such as construction of a bypass. Eventually, the focus was narrowed down to the square as a more economic and shorter-term project. The square serves many purposes in the town, Fisher said. “Historically, it’s been there since day one of the borough or actually preday one, and you can tell that by the houses and buildings that are built there,” he explained. “It’s also unique. Not too many towns have squares like this, and it tends to be a focal point for activities. W hen people think about Manheim, they think of the square, and we’re hoping people will think about it even more when they see how nice it is after everything is finished.” A rendering of the square project can be found on the borough’s website, https:// manheimboro.org.

Currently, people parking around the square have the option of using angle parking on the inside of the square or parallel parking around the outside. The project will flip those parking areas, with parallel parking moving inside and reverse angle parking on the outside. “Cars will back into the angled spaces,” Fisher stated. “The idea is that this will be safer, because people won’t have to back out blindly into traffic, and if they have things to load or unload into their trunk, they can do that on the sidewalk rather than in the street.”

Barons Fall in PIAA Quarterfinals
BY ERIC PYLES
The old saying goes that all good things must end and that proved to be true for the Manheim Central baseball team. Their stellar 2022 season saw the curtain close on June 9th when the Barons dropped their PIAA-5A quarterfinal tilt opposite Archbishop Wood by a 7-0 final. “ We just didn’t execute when we needed to early on at the plate to get a couple of runs across and change the feeling of that game,” said head coach Jason Thompson. “Their pitcher did a nice job.” The nice job Thompson referenced was a combined nohitter by two Vikings hurlers. Starter Justin MacCain covered the initial six innings to get the win while Connor Woodson covered the final inning to close things out. The
pair combined for 13 strikeouts and four walks in their nohit bid, leaving little room for Central to get anything going. Mason Weaver and Cayde Connelly split those four walks to cover the Baron offense. Connelly also saw time on the hill, tossing three innings of relief after taking over for Connor Rohrer who got the start. Rohrer was tagged for five of the seven runs, giving him the loss with the pair combining for four strikeouts and four walks. With the 2022 season officially in the books Thompson looked back on his squad’s 22-4 run to the PIAA-5A quarters, “Great season for these young men, super proud of all of them and they put their names in the history books at Manphoto by Mona Steinhauer heim Central as the 1st team to win a District 3-5A title, which Manheim Central first baseman Colin Thompson takes the pickoff throw as Archbishop Wood’s Michael Trommer dives back to the bag during the PIAA quarterfinals at Muhlenberg Junior High School June 9. is pretty darn special.”

Gretna Music has planned upcoming events, which will take place in the Mount Gretna Playhouse, 200 Pennsylvania Ave., Mount Gretna. Gospel singer Michelle Mayne-Graves’ Lifeline Quartet will present two programs on Saturday, July 2. At 11 a.m., during a Gretna Music for Kids performance, the Lifeline Quartet will share why some people believe spirituals included hidden messages to help slaves escape toward freedom in the North on the Underground Railroad. This familyfriendly show will have audience participation. The quartet give a concert of African American spirituals, such as “Wade in the Water” and “I’m on My Way to Canaan’s Land,” at 7:30 p.m. In honor of the Fourth of July weekend and Mayne-Graves’ work with homeless veterans in Los Angeles, this event is free to all active and retired military personnel; when purchasing tickets, they should use the code AMERICA. Mayne-Graves helped establish New Directions Choir, a choir for formerly homeless veterans that performed on American’s Got Talent in 2010. In addition to directing choirs, performing spirituals and helping to coordinate and lead veterans’ singing groups, Mayne-Graves supervises a team and works as the RN case manager for housing homeless veterans at the Veterans Affairs in Los Angeles. The Lifeline Quartet will return on Sunday, July 3, at 10 a.m. The group will team up with the Rev. John Overman to present a gospel worship service that is free and open to everyone. On July 3 at 7:30 p.m., the Emmy award-winning trio Time for Three will take the
