Manheim Central Grads Adapt And Overcome BY CATHY MOLITORIS
anheim Central senior Troy Peters said a specific theme could sum up the past year for the Class of 2021: adapt and overcome. Peters, who was among the 211 graduates at the school’s ceremony on June 4, spoke at the ceremony about how the challenges of the past year only made the students stronger. “For some of us, this past year took away jobs, much-needed money, even family members, but even with all that loss in our recent memory, things have been getting better,” he said, giving examples of student accomplishments and club activities at the school, including raising more than $15,000 for Four Diamonds through Mini-THON. “We overcame and even thrived.” The graduation ceremony, held at Spooky Nook Sports, featured several student speakers, along with comments from faculty members and guest speaker Seth Obetz, a 1989 graduate of Manheim Central.

friends and teachers for their support, adding, “I would not have made it this far without them.” Eve Sheaffer was recognized as salutatorian. She plans to attend Franklin & Marshall College in the fall. At Manheim Central, she was named senior Student of the Month for April, was a recipient of a Women’s Club of Manheim award and was an AP Scholar with Honor award winner. She recalled her favorite moment of high school, noting that it happened after the final
curtain of “Mary Poppins,” her senioryear musical. “At the end of each show, the whole cast lets out a big scream to commemorate each production,” she said. “The final scream of my senior musical is something I will remember for a very long time.” Speaker Andrew Rajaratnam, who will attend Penn State University in the fall, talked about wishing he had the chance to go through high school again. “You will never experience anything like high school,” he noted. “Though our journey did
take a bump in the road the last year, it did not stop us from making memories we’ll take with us for the rest of our lives.” Principal Joshua Weitzel addressed the members of the Class of 2021 and reminded them of the significance of graduation. “Tonight serves as a turning point in the lives of those seated here tonight,” he said. Superintendent Peter Aiken agreed, adding that the graduates now have a new job to do: “Go and make your mark on the world.”

They’ll Be “Singin’ In The Rain” At Cavod Camp BY CATHY MOLITORIS
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
The biblical story of creation will come to life when Ruhl’s United Methodist Church hosts a drivethrough event on Saturday, June 26. The festivities will take place at the church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, from 10 a.m. to noon. Over the past year, the church has held several well-attended drive-through celebrations, said Kris Gray, one of the event organizers. “We did a drive to Bethlehem at See Creation pg 6
Cavod Academy will host a musical theater camp for children this summer.
Faith, fun and fellowship will take center stage when Cavod Academy hosts a theater camp at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. Campers will perform “Singin’ in the Rain Jr.” and will spend two weeks learning all about live theater while making friends, said Connie Dienner, executive director. “The camp is a chance for the campers to learn how to work together to create a show from start to finish,” she noted. “They really bond during camp. It’s a great time for friendship and relationship building.”

people to watch out for snakes and informing them about the reptiles. Rothacker stresses that snakes are not easy to see, often do not want to hurt people, and do not want to be stepped on.
To view the video, search for “Copperheads and Roller Skates” on www.youtube.com. The Forgotten Friend Reptile TV channel on YouTube has a number of other informational videos, as well.

Cavod is a faith-based program, and in addition to rehearsal, the camp will feature devotional time and time for sharing. Master classes will be taught by theater professionals as well. “It’s really impressive what the kids can pull off in two weeks,” said Julie Haney, artistic director of Cavod’s new Manheim location, which will open later this summer. “The camp gives them a chance to really develop their theater skills.”
This is the 10th year Cavod has offered a summer theater camp. It’s a natural extension of the New Holland-based nonprofit’s mission, Dienner said. “Our slogan is, ‘Create With Purpose,’” she stated. “The strength of Cavod is believing in the abilities of all people and pulling out their God-given talent.” Dienner stressed that the camp is open to anyone, regardless of theater background. “You don’t need any experience,” she said. “Everyone is very supportive, and our team is very friendly. If anyone is shy going into camp, it’s amazing to see how the kids come out of their shell during camp. The parents will be amazed when they see the show.” A discounted camp rate will be offered through Thursday, July 1. For more information on the camp, visit https://cavod.org or call 717354-3355.
