Putting Old Glory To Rest BY CATHY MOLITORIS

According to the United States Flag Code, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” When a flag becomes faded, tattered or torn, it may be ready for retirement, and the Boy Scouts can help. Troop 47 in Manheim held a flag retirement ceremony on June 17 at Scout Hall,

located between North Hazel and North Linden streets on Scout Alley. “Retirement of the American flag is important for honoring what the flag represents and means to everyone,” said Scoutmaster Corby Rhodes. The troop, which consists of 13 boys from the Manheim Central School District, has been retiring flags for years. The most recent ceremony marked the second year the troop held the event at Scout Hall during the week of Flag Day. See Old Glory pg 6

Leo was one of 17 girls who participated in All ’bout Construction Girls Camp, held at ABC Keystone in Manheim. The June camp, for girls ages 14 to 19, offered handson opportunities to learn about the construction industry. This is the second year for the camp, which provides individualized instruction as well as group field trips. “We’re always striving to increase diversity in our industry,” said Stephanie Larkin, vice president of education, safety and workforce development for ABC Keystone. “We wanted to give girls a chance to see what the construction industry is all about.” During the week, the campers created projects under the instruction of ABC’s director of plumbing as well as HVAC, electrical and carpentry instructors.

Lily Smith shows off her project at the construction camp.

They were assisted by volunteers from ABC Keystone’s apprenticeship program, all of whom were female. “It’s been really nice to help out with the camp and teach the girls a little bit of everything,” said Priscilla Milanes, who is entering her third year as a carpentry apprentice. “I’m even learning new things. I wish they had this camp when I was in high school.” The campers went on three field trips during the week, where they had the opportunity to see various stages of construction projects. They visited Manheim Central High School, where they saw the beginning of a project, a senior living center in York where work was well underway and a health care facility in Lancaster that was nearing completion. ABC Keystone worked with The Farfield Company, Wohlsen Construction and Warfel Construction in arranging the field trips.

tered for the fall session. Ice cream will also be available for purchase. Cavod open house events are known for the costumed characters from Cavod Theatre shows who greet visitors. Regular performances will include music, theater, and dance presentations every 30 minutes. Every half hour, attendees will have an opportunity to win door prizes, and a grand prize featuring a variety of experiences, including tickets to shows, will be given away. Cavod music director Amy Rau noted that a new vocal class will be included in the schedule. “We have added vocal technique and harmony classes for ages 8 to 12 and 13 to adult,” she noted, explaining that the class will be a group experience. “ We will spend an hour a week working on music theory,” Rau stated, adding that learning to read music, understanding music, ear training exercises, and learning how to apply all that to musical pieces will be the focus. “We will learn repertoire that allows us to sing in harmony together with a group of people,” she said. A junior program for dancers ages 5 to 8 will be expanding to introduce that age group to all the genres of dance Cavod offers. Dienner noted that a new teacher, Stephanie Brooks Martin, has arrived from New York City. Dienner said that Martin’s experience with off-Broadway shows will be valuable in her supervision of the tap dancing program. In addition, a new Friends in Motion Junior class will be available for those ages 7 to 12. Friends in Motion is designed for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Connie Dienner, director of Cavod, said that the organization has held similar classes for adults for some time and that classes for younger students had been requested. Dienner is looking forward to the events with enthusiasm. “Open houses are always a highlight,” she said, noting that meeting teachers is important to prospective students and their parents. In 1985, a 1929 Chevy truck was put together using original parts from Texas. A 1930 Chevrolet engine from Christiana was restored for the vehicle, and in 1996, the truck took a cross-country trip, starting with the back wheels in the Atlantic Ocean in Sandy Hook, N.J. Nearly 60 days later, the front wheels touched the waters of the Pacific Ocean near Hollywood, Calif. On Friday, July 8, from 5 to 8 p.m., that 1929 Chevy, which is operated by a group called the Pennsylvania Hillbillies, will visit the Lititz Historical Foundation, 145 E. Main St., Lititz. The free event will feature one-of-akind photo opportunities. Since the trip across the U.S., when the unusual truck was used to raise funds for Lions Clubs International, the

At the end of the week, campers were sent home with a camp T-shirt; personal protective equipment, including a hard hat, safety glasses and ear protection; and a toolkit full of tools to use on their own. They also left with a new

appreciation for the construction industry, said camper Naomi Showalter. “My CTC teacher suggested I try this camp,” she remarked. “It’s been really fun to try everything.” She noted that she came to the camp excited to do carpentry work but found that she also enjoyed other aspects of the program. “You get a chance to try new things you haven’t tried before,” she stated, “and you might find you really like it.”

Hannah Wheeler’s favorite Bible verse comes from 2 Corinthians, and she plans to put it into practice in her new role as program and communications coordinator at Rainbow ’s End Youth Services (REYS) in Mount Joy. “The verse talks about how God is a comfort to us, and that is my goal - to show people the comfort that God has given me and to help the youth who come to the center who maybe don’t have the influence of God in their lives,” she stated. Wheeler assumed the role on June 6. A graduate of Lancaster Bible College, she double majored in communication and biblical studies, with a minor in intercultural studies. She said her position at REYS is an ideal fit. “It’s a perfect mixture of what I studied in college and what I’m pas-

sionate about, which is discipleship and working with youth,” she stated. Her focus will be on the Girls Group at REYS, which consists of middle and high school girls, and the Kids Club, for students in grades one through five. Along with helping to teach and coordinate discipleship for both groups, Wheeler will work to increase the center’s outreach through social media and marketing. “I want to broaden our reach in the community,” she remarked. Cristina Paden, executive director of REYS, noted that Wheeler’s position is a new full-time job at the center. Previously the position had been for a part-time employee who only focused on the programming part. “As we grow as an organization, we wanted someone who can take on increasing communications responsibilities,” Paden said. “Hannah will bring a fresh

As she settles into her new role, Wheeler said she’s most looking forward to putting her skills to work. “I’m really excited to be able to use the tools in my toolbelt and strengthen what I already know while also learning a lot of new things from the team here,” she said. “I’m just really happy to be here.” For more information on REYS, visit https://reys.org.

Gov. Tom Wolf recently presented 12 members of the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) with Governor’s Awards for Excellence for their work to improve the lives of Pennsylvania’s nearly 800,000 veterans. The awards recognize commonwealth employees for exemplary job performance or service that reflects initiative, leadership, innovation, and increased efficiency. Ten of the award recipients are members of the Veteran Outreach Team. Local members of this team recognized

perspective, and she has expertise in communications since she trained in that. Having a full-time person focused especially on our outreach to young women in the community and helping that program flourish is really exciting.” Originally from Florida, Wheeler wanted to relocate to Lancaster County after graduating from college in December 2021. “I am familiar with the area, and I love it here,” she said. When she’s not working, she enjoys running and kayaking, although she admits she hasn’t had as many opportunities to kayak in Pennsylvania as she did in Florida. “I enjoy being outside and being with my friends and family,” she said. “I also like writing. I write poetry.”

tion to resources across the Commonwealth. The team has done this primarily through PA VETConnect, an outreach program allowing the DMVA to concentrate on delivering services from within the communities where veterans live. It also allows the DMVA to utilize community-based providers to fill gaps in services. Another local award recipient is Richard Hamp of Fostoria, special assistant to the DMVA’s deputy adjutant general for Veterans Affairs. He is the agency’s key advocate for reducing veteran suicide across the commonwealth. Hamp is Pennsylvania’s lead on the federal Veterans Administration - Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administra-

tion and the Governor’s Challenge to Prevent Suicide Among Service Members, Veterans and Their Families. He works diligently to build strong collaboration between government, nongovernment, and nonprofit partners to help veterans in their communities, including writing grant proposals resulting in over $7 million for programs that help veterans in crisis. Hamp has been instrumental in rolling out several veteran suicide awareness programs and most recently served as a subject-matter expert on the DMVA’s virtual town hall on preventing veteran suicide. Meals On Wheels Holds Celebration Meals on Wheels held a ribbon cutting event on May 18 in celebration of its new location at 1411 Columbia Ave., Lancaster. Operations moved to Columbia Avenue from the organization’s previous location on Manheim Pike in October 2021. The new location is a retrofit restaurant with a kitchen originally designed for food production. Nearly every piece of equipment was replaced with new equipment for higher efficiency of production and cost. The square footage of the Columbia Avenue location is more than double the space on Manheim Pike, from approximately 2,500 square feet to over 5,600 square feet. With increased storage, office, and kitchen prep spaces, Meals on Wheels has already been able to see more than a 10% increase in services provided. For more information, visit www.mealsonwheelsof lancaster.org.

The Fulton Forward Foundation, an independent, nonprofit private foundation funded by Fulton Bank, recently announced a $125,000 commitment to the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE), a global educational nonprofit focused on bringing the power of entrepreneurship to youths in low-income communities. The funds, which will be provided to the organization over a four-year period, will be used to support NFTE’s Aspiring Entrepreneurs Program. This initiative provides students from under-resourced communities throughout the Mid-Atlantic, which includes the Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and Virginia regions, with access to the courses of NFTE’s Entrepreneurship Pathway and several key activities and

components of the NFTE student experience. According to NFTE CEO J.D. LaRock, students in the program will learn how to develop an original business plan for companies that can be launched in their own communities. Fulton’s grant and partnership with NFTE were announced at the MidAtlantic: Philadelphia Metro Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge on June 9 in Philadel-

phia, where student finalists pitched their businesses to a panel of judges. Fulton Bank president and COO Curtis Myers served as a VIP Finals judge and presenter at the event, which was co-sponsored by Fulton Bank. Also participating were Scott Snyder, a member of the Fulton Financial Corporation board of directors, and Smokey Glover, senior vice-president/retail sales leader at Fulton Bank.

Provided as a community service by this civic minded publication and the Association of Community Publishers R081004

Participants in the presentation included (from left) Smokey Glover, J.D. LaRock, Curtis Myers and Scott Snyder.
