Manheim Central Seniors Earn Scholarships BY CATHY MOLITORIS
The Women’s Club of Manheim recently awarded scholarships to Manheim Central senior girls pursuing postsecondary education. While the club typically awards three scholarships annually, this year the members presented five.
“We just decided with everything going on with COVID, people are struggling more financially, and it was important to support as many people as we can,” explained Shayna Sharp, education chair of the club. Scholarship recipients are Emmalynn Varner, Rachel King, Emma Ulrich, Eve Sheaffer and Julia Wolfe. See Seniors pg 5

ou’ve heard of TGIF, but thanks to the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce, now you can say “TGIT” - thank goodness it’s Thursday. 1st Thursdays kicked off June 3 and will run from 5 to 8 p.m. through December; July’s event will take place on Thursday, July 1. “Manheim has seen a number of exciting new ventures join the downtown landscape, adding to the many strong established businesses,” said Jason Horst, owner of Horst Arts and a board member of the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce, who is organizing the effort. “The time was right to launch a monthly event that showcases what Manheim has to offer. 1st Thursdays provide a way for Manheim residents to experience, celebrate and support their local town, while also offering businesses a chance to interact with their community.” Horst noted that organizers also hope 1st Thursdays will draw in visitors beyond locals. “Many people outside of Manheim don’t realize the revitalization that has taken
Church parking lot on Hazel Street. “Lancaster County Magazine will be set up on Market Square to promote their July issue in which Manheim is the featured town, and the Manheim Historical Society will have the Fasig House and the Keath House open to visitors for the first time since the start of the pandemic,” Horst stated, adding that the evening will also feature other fun surprises. “Keep an eye out for the town crier, who will be directing crowds toward featured activities.” The event’s website, www.1stThursdays.com, will list participating businesses and special activities each month, along with participating vendors on Market Square, food trucks and entertainment. “It also provides detailed information and applications for businesses and volunteers wanting to get involved,” Horst said. “And while the hub of activity is happening downtown, 1stThursdays.com is also a resource to find other local businesses outside of the downtown area who will be offering food or other entertainment between 5 and 8 p.m. during 1st Thursday.”
Kelli Knerr (far left), president of the Women’s Club of Manheim, and Shayna Sharp (far right), club education chair, presented scholarships to (second from left) Emmalynn Varner, Rachel King, Emma Ulrich, Eve Sheaffer and Julia Wolfe.

Campers will perform “Singin’ in the Rain Jr.” and will spend two weeks learning all about live theater while making friends, said Connie Dienner, executive director.

place, so we’re also aiming to bring in visitors from out of town to broaden the client base of local businesses,” he explained. Before launching 1st Thursdays, Chamber members looked to other towns and what they were already doing. “Many towns are experiencing success with monthly downtown events,” Horst stated. “Fridays are used by Elizabethtown, Lititz, Mount Joy and Lancaster. Because of that, and because football Fridays are huge in Manheim in the fall, we decided to go with Thursdays.” Special events will vary each month, but every 1st Thursday will feature live music at the Mini Park, across Main Street from Market Square, as well as promotions and activities at downtown businesses. “The sidewalks of Market Square will be filled with outside vendors of all kinds,” Horst remarked. “A hub of food trucks will be a regular feature at each 1st Thursday.” July’s event will feature local singer-songwriter Nathan Landis Funk at the Mini Park, as well as Wich Way Sandwiches and other food trucks at the Zion Lutheran

It’s an essential school supply, but for some students, a new backpack isn’t in the budget. That’s where Rainbow’s End Youth Services (REYS) steps in. REYS offers Backpacks to School, providing free backpacks and school supplies to students in grades one through 12. “Any family in need is eligible for a backpack,” said Jeremy Freimark, REYS program director. “We serve primarily Lancaster County, but we also have served families in surrounding areas including York and Harrisburg.”

REYS, located at 105 Fairview St., Mount Joy, has been providing the service since 2012 and has given away thousands of backpacks. “We have been able to provide more than 600 backpacks each year, and the majority of them are not repeat families,” Freimark noted. Backpacks are stuffed with school supplies, including notebooks, pocket folders, markers and colored pencils. The registration deadline to receive a backpack is Saturday, July 31. Backpack distribution will be Monday, Aug. 9, through Friday, Aug. 13.

“After families register, they’ll be assigned a time to come in during that week in August to pick up their backpack,” Freimark explained. “We try to make it an individualized experience for the recipients, and the students get to pick out their backpack.” The backpack program helps REYS meet its mission of providing community service, he noted. “REYS is here to support students in three ways: spiritual guidance, academic assistance and social support,” he stated. The backpack program also serves another purpose, he added, as it brings families into the center and introduces them to what REYS offers. Programming at REYS is faith-based and is available for students in grades one through 12. It includes homework help, sports and music programs, meals and more. REYS is always looking for donations of backpacks and supplies, as well as volunteers to pack the backpacks. “For anyone who wants to volunteer, it’s an opportunity for them to walk beside the youth center and help support families in need in our community,” Freimark said. Volunteers can call the center at 717-653-9511 or email office@reys.org to sign up.

Summer Vibes At PA Beaches BY WENDY ROYAL
Sick of hours of traffic heading to Maryland or Jersey shores? Not to mention crowded beaches and boardwalk shops that make a big dent in your wallet. You don’t have to go down the shore to enjoy a beach vacation. Pennsylvania offers an entirely different beach experience. More than likely, if you live in PA, you’re within an hour or two of a beach. Most of the lakefront beaches in the commonwealth are in our pristine state parks, but you’ll find private and public beaches throughout the state. Thirty-five of Pennsylvania’s 121 state parks have beaches that are typically open and free to the public for swimming from late May to mid-September. Many of these beaches have a swim-at-your-own-risk policy. They are generally open from 8 a.m. to sunset, daily, but may have adjusted schedules, so check the website before hitting the road. You’ll find links to all the state park beaches on www.townlively.com/ summer-vibes-at-pa-beaches.

The group supports the Manheim community with projects including providing Christmas gifts for students in the district, offering grants and donating to local food pantries among other organizations. “Each year, the Women’s Club of Manheim gives more than $10,000 to the community,” Sharp said. “One hundred percent of our fundraising goes back into the community.” The Women’s Club of Manheim is open to women age 18 or older, and the club is always looking for new members, she noted. “The camp is a chance for the campers to learn how to work together to create a show from start to finish,” she noted. “They really bond during camp. It’s a great time for friendship and relationship building.” The camp is open to youths ages 10 to 18 and will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays from Monday, Aug. 2, through Thursday, Aug. 12. On Friday, Aug. 13, the camp will run from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. At the end of the camp, the campers will put on a full production, complete with costumes, lighting and music; performances will be held at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14, and Sunday, Aug. 15. Cavod is a faith-based program, and in addition to rehearsal, the camp will feature devotional time and time for sharing. Master classes will be taught by theater professionals as well. “It’s really impressive what the kids can pull off in two weeks,” said Julie Haney, artistic director of Cavod’s new Manheim location, which will open later this summer. “The camp gives them a chance to really develop their theater skills.” This is the 10th year Cavod has offered a summer theater camp.
